Could the author of "21" please explain the following statement "His family and ancestors weren't caught in the slave trade and shipped to North America, they hadn’t experienced the Civil War and the rest of black history to that point in the U.S."

His ancestors most likely, like a number of Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban ancestors were of African descent, brought to the New World in slave ships (and Puerto Rico is generally considered part of North America in the same way Aruba is considered part of South America and England is considered part of Europe).

Also, please explain the difference between a dark skin Puerto Rican and a black Puerto Rican or a black person for that matter
