I can honestly say that Ultimate Dazzler, for her first year or so, was the best Marvel character EVER. A foul mouthed, thrash rockin' Dazzler who has a clear substance abuse problem made her my instant favorite, even moreso than her inspiration.

I would, of course, take exception to "616 Dazzler sucks!" Heehee.

Of course, she WAS the perennial loser. Woman failed or quit at everything she ever tried!

That's why I love her. It's not her successes, but her perpetual determination that makes her awesome.

that's why she is one of my favorite characters of all time...do you remember that x-men annual right after the fall of the mutants or was it the mutant massacre??

Is that the one with the Alan Davis art, and she chose to become a vagrant as opposed to the attorney or rock star?

yes!!!...that story still sticks w/ me...you understand so much about her in those few panels...so by the time to get back to the regular book, and she starts to "man up" so to speak, it really resonates. just made me love her character even more.

I felt bad for her. I thought that was the worst choice she could make. I did find myself liking her more though, particularly since at the end of the story she questioned herself if she was such a loser to make that choice.

YES! I love that Annual. The art is so good (she's even in my favorite Dazz costume!), and the choice she made really got you into her character. (You know, pretty much everything you guys have said so far...hehe)
I just really think she's best when she's constantly questioning her talent and dealing with self-esteem issues despite having this MASSIVE talent. It really makes her an interesting character.

That issue broke my heart for her.

here's the thing...my dad once told that he wanted to be a bum...and i never understood why anyone would purposely choose a life like that for themselves...and then i read that story and it finally made sense...for the average person that would be the *worst* possible choice, but for someone lost, maybe it isn't...is it better to try and live life to fulfill someone else's expectations or to lose yourself following a dream that will ultimately lead to your undoing, or is it simply just easier to lose yourself amid the faceless souls that no one really pays attention to??...her segment in that book was far more deeper than it any right to be.

that's what i liked about seeing her in the ultimate universe...dazzler has the potential to be one of the most powerful mutants in the MU and no one really took the time to explore that fully and that's bordering on the criminal...but that's just my opinion...

Possibly deeper than CC intended. I see your point clearly. Fascinating.

It was Wolverine who saved the day in the annual but interestingly, he became a god in the story, and he usually is a god in most of the plots.

I think she was afraid of both success and failure. She could put herself out there and be a rockstar...but she clearly had been beaten into submission worry about if she really had what it takes. And if she failed at that, what really was left of herself? She had devoted her life to music and if she never got anywhere with it, that's like saying that her life was a waste.
She could be a huge lawyer, but that isn't where he heart is, so even if she succeeded, she would be killing her dreams and end up miserable and someone other than herself.
And in both scenarios, she ended up on the wrong end of a bullet, anyway.

That's why she chose to be an anonymous bum...if she never had to put herself out there, she never risked failure or success as someone she's not.

No kidding. I love disco Dazzler for how silly and campy she is (however unintended), but I've always been more interested in a Dazzler that has unlimited potential as a super-powerful being. I love in AOA how she was super-handy-dandy with her light powers...then, in the 10 year anniversay, she was back to just flashy lights. Let down.
Ultimate Dazzler finally got going in that direction, but I'm sad to say that I lost interest in the Ultimate X-Men once Kirkman took over. Vaughn's (by way of bendis) version of Dazz is one of the best, ever, in my opinion.

I can count the number of times I've posted in YABS on one hand, but I feel compelled to say that Dazzler rocks and should be celebrated. Also, I just wanted more people to see my fun Dazzler avatar. Don't you think I make an awesome Dazzler?

Also, Gail, I really like your Wonder Woman--a lot. I'm currently enthusiastic about two DC titles: All-Star Superman and Wonder Woman. Obviously, you're in good company!

That's all for now. More may be forthcoming.

YOU LIKE MOCKINGBIRD?!?!?!?!?! Aggie, you're the BOMB! She's my fave avenger. You should check out my mockingbird in the avengers thread: Draw Me an Avenger: Mockingbird.

This What If was WAAAAAY back in the early 80's. You would love it if you love the Galactus storyline. She stays the herald so long that when she returns to earth, it's nothing but a ball of dust. She's powered by her song, too, which is rad as shit.
