picked up the volume 4 trade: March of the Wooden Soldiers (based on another topics suggestions)
overall, a truely fascinating idea...i've read about it in the past, and always liked the concept, just never really took the time to pick it up...
the story itself was easy to get into and remain immersed in...
i would have liked some of the concepts fleshed out more a bit, like maybe an actual tension filled meeting between bigby and red riding hood, but that really is just nit-picking since i enjoyed most everything else so much...
i know i'm going to get some groans, but it just seems to me like bibgy is modeled kinda after wolverine, not saying this in a bad way, i like the way he came off...
i'm assuming they later follow up on the boy blue/real red riding hood story?
and i think i've had it spoiled that gepetto is actually the adversary and not just a slave of his?
why wasn't issue 22 included in this and what transpires in that book?
anyways, real fun ride that i think will continue into some of the other trades for me...so suggestions would be great...
any chance this concept finds its way to the big screen anytime soon?

Issue 22 was a standalone story not directly part of MoTWS, that is in the next trade so that Vertigo could package The Last Castle with MOTWS.
22 is a Cinderella story.
Hmmmm. If you want the volumes with the highest approvals the other main contender for best Fables trade is Homelands (Vol. 6) - I would start at the beginning though. My personal favourite trade is Storybook Love, but I would recommend to read Animal Farm before you read that.
You may also want to try "the Nearly Great Escape" or Jack of Fables Vol 1 - or as I call it "Fables on Crack" which is action packed, filled with witty commentary and just plain fun.
Oh, and Bill Willingham has said that one of his influences for Bigby Wolf was the character of Neil Burnside from Sandbaggers (http://www.opsroom.org/pages/faq/index.html).

Hey man, I just got on board with Fables also. I picked up the first trade and felt it was kind of slow but stuck with it anyways because I really, really liked the concept and I'm glad I did. I just got through this same arc and it is really the best so far.
My advice would be if you plan to stay with the book, you really should go back and read it in order. You will like this arc even more I'm sure. And if you like Bigby Wolf now, you will love his character after you read all the back issues, especialy Story Book Love. And yeah he did remind me a bit of wolverine at first, but you know...every book needs a bad ass right
Good thing I got another 50+ issues to go through before I gotta sit around and wait a month for a fix :D

i would have liked some of the concepts fleshed out more a bit, like maybe an actual tension filled meeting between bigby and red riding hood, but that really is just nit-picking since i enjoyed most everything else so much...There is a Bigby/Red encounter at one point, if I recall correctly. Keep in mind that you've only read one volume out of ten, so there's lots of stuff you haven't been exposed to.
i know i'm going to get some groans, but it just seems to me like bibgy is modeled kinda after wolverine, Not in the least. Bigby isn't a psychotic killer. I suppose there's some physical resemblance, but there only so many ways you can draw a human character who's supposed to look like a wolf (or wolverine). If anything, the original antecedent is probably Timber Wolf from the LSH.

Fables really pays off when read from the beginning . . .
Each trade is better than the next and you miss some of the tension and back stories that add to the plot if you hop in at the middle . . .
Even with some spoilers ruined, when you reach that point it still reads really well . . . The first trade reads kind of hokey but stick with it . . it's worth it . . . :)

Yeah, I thought the same thing right before I bought all the trades, read them rapidly and became a junkie.

Me and my girlfriend sat down and read the entire 70 issue run thus far including "The Last Castle" and "1001 Nights of Snow Fall".
All in all, Its been a fun ride (though I felt alot of things could be moved faster). Theres a bunch of memorable moments I can look back on to remind me whats so good about this series. I hope it reads good in monthlies because some of the issues just didnt seem to go anywhere but as a whole I didnt mind since Id get the nxt issue right away.
Anyways, really looking forward to this storyarc coming up in issue 71+
For the thread starter, I recommend starting at Book 1 and working up to complete it all. You may miss a good story here or there.
I have all of Jack of Fables now so Im going to take some time this week and enjoy all these issues to current. I hear its very fun.

yeah, i've pretty much decided after reading March, that i'll probably pick everything up in trade form...
again, just the idea they had using classic characters in this way is pretty awesome...

I heard it was a critically acclaimed (but not a heavily in-your-face advertised) series, which peaked my interest. Then, when I learned of the premise and what they were doing with the characters (living in modern day NYC as exiles) I figured it'd be a book to add to my pull list.
Good stuff.

Hehe Bigby is my favorit in Fables and i take an offense to Wolverine comparison :P
Since the fable of this wolf is way older than 1900's and marvel i think its the way around that Wolverine look is on based on a man wolf look which isnt something new ;)

I just tried Fables too. I was a little skeptical about trying a "Mature Readers" book, because I tend to shy away from those. However, as a folk and fairy tale geek, I felt I had to give it a shot. I ended up reading the first four volumes. Pretty good stuff.
