I thought this was a pretty good opening for the series. Lapham seems to have set up a nice interesting cast for us to follow.
I also liked the CADDYSHACK homage. Intentional or not, I thought it was rather amusing.

I liked it, perhaps more so because I was such a diehard fan of Stray Bullets, and I want this new series to truly be the new outlet for all of Lapham's ideas (as the Vertigo blurb inside states). However, the first issue relied too much on telling us about the characters instead of showing us about them, which is something I didn't like much about the recent Vinyl Underground series. But I guess that may be a necessity in this market as a way to present everything to a reader immediately since the cloud of premature cancellation looms over everything. In any event, I'll definitely give it at least the first 3 or 4 issues before I make up my mind, the same way I did with Vinyl Underground.

I'm not much on potty humor, but I will admit that the "FrOOOt!" bit made me giggle. :p

Alright, so I'm pretty new to comics, I've borrowed a few of my friends Marvel Civil War, have really enjoyed X-Factor and have picked up X-Force because I wanted to start a new series as it started. I've also started Immortal Iron Fist and Y the Last Man because people have been raving about them. My question is, should I look into picking up Young Liars as well? I like the fact that it's just coming out and I've heard good things about the writer, but my question is how is this book setting itself up? Just a continuing story about 2 kids one loser and one nutty girl? and what do you think it's chances are of lasting more then 20-30 issues considering vertigo's recent cancellation spree?

Your questions are kinda hard to answer after only one issue.
#1 was a set-up with the characters, but I think the story is going to go in some wild directions. I think it's going to be more than "2 kids one loser and one nutty girl".
As for continuing to 20-30 issues? Who knows. But, after only one outing, I hope it has a long life. I think it's a pretty good book.

I enjoyed the first issue. As a Lapham fan, its great seeing a monthly from him. Although, like others who would like to see the finale of Stray Bullets, I'm happy for any Lapham books.
Seeing that Sadie is an Amy Racecar type character brought to life, I'm in for the long run. I've bought 2 issues and gave one to my friends who ate it up.
Look forward to the next issue.

I agree. Lots of telling instead of showing in this issue.
He TOLD us that Sadie says a member of the cast shot her. Wouldn't that have been cool to hear straight from Sadie's mouth at the right moment?
Felt like he was setting it up way too much instead of letting it happen.
Still, just a first issue and I liked some the ideas here, having never read any of Lapham's other work. Might give issue 2 a go.

Wow, only 6 people with an opinion over this. I guess it'll last about 10 issues.

Nah. Think positive, pardner. We might have another BIG hit on our hands.
Time will tell...

It's ok, it's just an introductory issue.
Nothing to get too worked up over yet, but I like where it's going. Hope it stays the course.
And i'll be honest, the cool cover made me buy it. If it had anything else, I probably would have skipped right over it.

Was quite good and really it may not have made it a complete must have, but worth getting more to see where it goes. Really I trust Dave Lapham so he gets a story arc to really wow me. Though punk rock, a girl with no notion of inhibition, and the side characters introduced really has more then enough for a great story. This was just lots of intro work to establish things which all long form works have to do.
Plus the cover just kicks so much ass.

David Lapham literally rocked this issue. The book had me hook, line, and sinker the moment Sadie jumped fearless towards the bullet.

I haven't bought a book with the Vertigo imprint since I stopped buying American Virgin at around issue 4. But Young Liars, I enjoyed it. My only qualm;the girl gets shot in the head and is now super brawler supreme.

I didn't see it as super brawler supreme. More that she just couldn't give a damn. Which lends to unpredictability since she doesn't operate within the accepted norms of society. Common reaction is not to leap towards a bullet after all. This reckless behavior is going to be one heck of a ride, considering she won't always be lucky in her brawls. (or at least I hope she won't be. :D)

I'm a huge Lapham fan, Stray Bullets is one of my favourite titles ever so I've been gagging for this series and...............I liked it. Nothing more, nothing less.
On the plus side you get a lot of bang for your buck, especially for a first issue, and the art is, as ever, something else. Hopefully that's enough to keep people coming back for the next few issues instead of complaining 'nothing happened'.
Personally I would rather have had fewer characters introduced from the get go, just concentrated on the two main leads and introduced the rest over the course of the first story arc. I'm worried that a lack of sympathetic characters may put some people off.
Still, I have every faith in Lapham, give it a year it could be my favourite book!

I thought the book was an entertaining read. I'm looking foreward to the second issue and I loved the wide variety in characters that were introduced. I also loved seeing the music that inspired him to make the book. Twas quite fun.

Yeah, I liked it a lot, but it doesn't seem to take its time with characters and scenes the way Stray Bullets did. I'm guessing the fact that he's working under Vertigo has to do with it. He has to keep the book afloat to avoid cancellation, while with SB he could take his sweet-ass time and just put it out there.
Or, then again, the issue's title is a thousand miles an hour. Maybe it's just the pace he's chosen for this book--to just hot-streak it from the get-go.

The cover of the book is stand out. I bought the comic just for it.

Well I guess this comic isn't for me. But it still deserves some attention cause the artwork and the cover's absolutely great to look at! So I'm probably going to keep buying it just for the pretty art.
All in all, spoilers free opinion:
-Too many characters get introduced with one liners or off panel. I have no clue who they are, so who cares.
-Quoting kewl songs or using song lyrics to tell a comic doesn't work. It's just annoying.
-Maybe I should wait for the trade, but why put it out in monthlies first then? :(

I read it, thought it was OK, but can't remember anything outstanding about it. Needs more time to develop.

It can work, but only if you actually know and like said song, which in my case is rarely.
But it is not as bad as actually using the non-word 'kewl'.
MartinRedmond

I think it doesn't. Song lyrics are meant to go along a song, they epic FAIL outside of that context.

Amen to this.
And I assume the "kewl" reference was completely tongue-in-cheek.
