this is all so new to me, i cant wait to go buy a copy of issue #1 if i can find one...

The Fables are those of the childhood stories. After being forced to flee their homelands, they currently reside in the fictional land of New York.

"Once upon a time..." Those were the words that started out the stories of all the Fables. They lived for centuries until a being known as The Adversary came and forced them to flee through dimensional gates into the Mundane, or human, world. Most of the Fables lost their fortunes when they left their estates behind and so live as normal day to day people rather then Royalty. Most Fables are seemingly immortal, living forever. Their ability to survive seems to be based on the collective consciousness of the Mundane human population that grew up reading their stories. The more popular and well known the "character" is, the more likely they are to survive fatal injury. Snow White, for example, was shot though the head by a high powered sniper rifle and was able to make a full recovery whereas Weyland Smith and the members of the Mouse Police killed in battle with the Adversary's wooden soldiers remained dead. However, Frau Totenkinder has doubts about this theory... The Adversary is the being responsible for driving out the Fables from their homelands with his army. The Fables were forced to relocate to New York City.

Fable Town is a part of New York City located around the cross streets Bullfinch and Kipling. There are several shops, such as the Eggman Restaurant and Nodd's Books with Fables residing in apartments above. Spells of protection and deception keeps Mundane humans from even parking on the streets there. Many of the more well-known Fables reside in the Woodland Luxury Apartments which also houses the Fable Town City Hall. City Hall is a magically enchanted space which is vastly greater inside then it's small office door makes it appear on the outside. There are endless rooms, the Witching Well, a vast library, and all the enchanted weapons and artifacts, such as Excalibur and the Vorpal Blade, are stored there.

Keeping the nature of the Fables secret from the Mundane human world is the one of the highest laws of the Fable community.... In a "fictional land" called New York City, Jack speedily arrives at the Woodland Luxury Apartments. He rushes up to the security office of Bigby Wolf. Out of breath, he wants to report a terrible crime.

Nearby, in the Business office of Snow White, Beauty and the Beast have some problems of their own. Lord Beast has been having trouble maintaining his human form. He says it is based on Beauty's mood. The more she is mad at him, the more beastly he becomes. Snow, as the Director of Operations, basically tells them they need to deal with their marriage problems on their own. She coldly tells them that even if their operations could afford to give them marriage counseling, she still wouldn't allow it. They have no way to collect taxes for their operations. They have to rely on donations. She tells them that if Beast cannot maintain his human form, he has to either buy a glamour from one of the witches or he can relocate upstate to the Farm (where the other nonhuman Fables live). Beauty is upset. She says they had to escape from the Homelands and lost their fortune. Snow reminds them that most of the Fables lost everything when escaping from the Adversary. When they mention that Snow isn't the Mayor and can't make judgment over them, she reminds them that as the Deputy Mayor, she does have some control. What would happen is if they made an appointment with the mayor, King Cole, he'd go to her for her recommendation and she would tell him the same thing. Snow is the one that does all the real work... The next day, Snow prepares to meet with Bigby again to see if there's any new information on her sister, Rose Red. In Bigby's studio apartment, he is trying to wake up Colin, one of the Three Little Pigs, who crashed on his couch during the night. He tells Colin that he has to go back to the Farm and has to stop sneaking back into the city. Colin says that Bigby still owes him for destroying his house. Bigby tells him that's ancient history.

In the apartment of Molly the waitress, Prince Charming leaves as she still sleeps in bed. He leaves her a note asking her to pick up (and pay for) his dry cleaning, he's taken some money from her purse, and her spare key because he will be staying there for a few days.

When Snow meets with Bigby, she wants to know if Jack is the one responsible for Rose's disappearance. Bigby says probably not but needed an excuse to hold him in custody. He does tell her that all of the blood in the apartment was her sister's. Snow wonders if a Mundy could have been involved since she partied with the Mundanes from time to time. Bigby is pretty sure it was a Fable because of the message written on the wall in her blood. Snow insists on being present when he further questions Jack. Bigby tells her that she has a government to run and mentions the fact that she's been estranged from her sister for some time. This actually makes her a suspect too. He asks to get her questioning over with but she says she can't at the moment. She has to meet with her ex, Prince Charming, first.... The Cinderella of legend has become Fable Town's most active spy. She also Prince Charming's third ex-wife.

Cinderella is Prince Charming’s third ex-wife. She divorced him due to his infidelity, but how she came to the Mundane world and began working for Bigby Wolf as a spy is unknown. She has been instrumental in Fable Town’s survival. She has ferreted out people spying for the Adversary, helped organize the mission Bibgy undertook to the The Adversary’s Home, organized a treaty with the Kingdom of the Cloud Giants, and is currently continuing to assist in the interrogation of Baba Yaga.

Most of Fable Town is unaware of her role as a spy, believing her to be the flighty ex-owner of the Glass Slipper shoe shop.... Flycatcher now knows what he must do to save those he can from the coming war against the Empire. But the mission will require bravery, sacrifice, an iron will and perseverance against a host of dangers. Is meek and mild Fly up to the task? Also, Prince Charming delivers an ultimatum to the Imperial ambassador.

All things considered, maybe Flycatcher should have remained a janitor. In the end, the heroic life turned out to be just too deadly. But how will the new Kingdom of Haven get along without Fly? Will people fade back into ghosts without his magic to sustain them? Will the Emperor overrun the kingdom now that Fly isn't there to stop him?... Before his final battle, King Ambrose, also known as Flycatcher, invited all of the Animal Fables currently trapped on The Farm to move back to their lost Homelands by coming to live in his kingdom of Haven. Boy Blue, determined to fulfill Fly's last command, brings the news to the Farm — which starts a debate among the Farm Fables. Will they remain imprisoned at the Farm — keeping in mind that it's a very comfortable prison — or will they journey back to the Homelands to take up residence in Haven?

I don't think "The Good Prince" is a good jumping on point, like I said earlier it's a very uneven series (much like Preacher) its not contiunity heavy but it does have some semblance of a constant plot.

Animal Farm vol 2. is a pretty good start point, its the best of the series, though I feel its a very bad idea to only read the "best" story.

March of the Wooden Soldiers Vol 4. is where you should start, it outlines the War which has been the focus of the book for the last few volumes, its a middle of the road storyline and it has the OGN The Last Castle which is the book at its best.

If you love the series then you can try some of the earlier volumes but if you are just luke warm on it then you can just skip to Homelands Vol 6., Sons of the Empire Vol 9. and then the Good Prince vol 10..

So in conclusion your reading order should be

March of the Wooden Soldiers Vol 4.

If you love it

Legends in Exile vol 1
Animal Farm vol 2
Storybook Love vol 3

If you like it

Homelands vol 6
Sons of the Empire vol 9
The Good Prince vol 10

The other volumes

Vol 5 The Mean Seasons - Covers the aftermath of the war, ties in most of the subplots of the first 4 volumes but doesn't have anything that great in it.

Vol 7 Arabian Knights and Days - Which is a very bad sub-plot story that introduces a bunch of characters you don't need to know about. The worst of the series

Vol 8 Wolves - Is a throw-back story to cover the main characters from the earlier issues, its okay but Sons of the Empire cover the important plot points.

 I had no idea there was all these volumes. i like going in order...1,2,3,...
i cant find the other volumes on http://www.comicvine.com except for the "The Good Prince" and a few other isuess. can any one help?

what is this about a hard cover book???? can anyone shed more light on it for me?
i think this would all make a good movie seris too.

well, i cant find anything in the other thread that explanes any thing about what fables are, like i have done here in this thread. people are just saying if they like it or not and why, in that other thread, but no one is talking just about what it is the thread is about, "fables". that is why i put what i did in the very first post of this here thread.

this thread is more for talking about fables comics rather then talking about if you hate them or not.

 Who is the company behind the fabels? what charitores do you like or not like and why? If you have read the newest issue then what do you think will happen next? How do they compair to the grimm fairy tales (http://www.comicvine.com/comic/grimm-fairy-tales/19824/)comics? Where are the Dwarfs from snow white? How does the fables (http://www.comicvine.com/comic/fables/9723/&i=44959&f=y) series compair to the jack of fables (http://www.comicvine.com/comic/jack-of-fables/19141/&i=5955&f=y) series? Are they connected in any way?

I think For me this series has no flaws. Even the art from both Mark Buckingham and James Jean is top notch. Some of Mark Buckingham's work in Fables has even been compared to Jack Kirby. And I'm just dying for them to make James Jean's covers available in poster form. Which cover are you talking about? Are there any other posters for the Fables series? if Yes, where can one get them? I would love to see posters for the covers of Grimm Fairy Tales (http://www.comicvine.com/comic/grimm-fairy-tales/19824/)comics.

If you'd started the thread by asking a question, or actually tries to engage other posters instead of just posting a collection of other posts, then you'd probably have received a better response.
Instead you've just shown the irrelevance of this thread by showing that all the information you want is already on the board.
The search function will let you find it even easier.

That said, I hope you enjoy the book as it's quite good.

Actually, he was being rather polite.
I just thought you were a bad poster before (I checked your posting history) who seems to care little about interacting with others, and more focused on just posting for your self.
However, if you're the sort of person who takes offense at being asked if English is your second language, like that's some sort of insult, then not only are you a fool, but you won't find many friends here.
Oh, and your sentence structure is actually quite dreadful.

I hope you enjoy reading Fables, and I hope either you change your attitude, or you stop posting about it here.

You might be happy to know that my attitude is changing with every off-topic post I read. It started of that I was happy and excited to find out about fables and grim fairy tale comics, but now it is starting to change to me starting to get pissed of at people who ARE posting. I am not stupid. I know darn well that my sentince structure is not awful or wrong. now please can we get back on topic? ty.
