Heck yeah. I've read those issues so many times. I was thinking yesterday (or was it the day before? whatev) but Hine never got around to the other Hellholes that were opening up. Dammit, I have creator changes!

Ordered it today, along side a bunch of other back issues, so I should be good from #163 to 180. I'm looking forward to some good Spawn reading. (Wow, never thought I'd see myself type that)

That is exciting stuff. This is my all time favorite book (since I have been with it since day one) and right now my overall third favorite read.

Despite all of these massive crossovers, very little character development actually happens. The characters are pretty much the same as they were years and years ago, when I started reading comics.

I just cannot do them any more. I read Batman and they have the whole RIP thing going on but it is a self contained event. I can stomach that but these huge ones that in the end nothing changed. If something changed it will be reset in a year or so.
Wanda is going to die in the next issue of Spawn - she ain't coming back boys. I like that concept

Not meaning to de-rail the current discussion...BUT.....
A bit of backstory : i was a HUGE comic geek from about 89-96 or so, then fell out for awhile, and over the last 5 or 6 years, have been geeting back into comics (mostly older TPB's and graphic novels, not much in the way of new books). Anywho, at the time i was collecting rabidly, one of the books i loved was Spawn (as most people that collected at the time dug it, as well as a lot of the other Image material). I read every issue, as they came out, from 1-40 or so.
To point, when i started getting back into comics in general, I noticed that a lot of people are down on the Image books of the 90's. That said, i've been affriad to re-read them, simply for fear that they won't hold up. Well, the fear is gone, and I went routing through the long boxes in storage today and got out the first 20 issues of Spawn, and I'm gonna start re-reading them tomorrow.
I'm hoping that they still hold up, over 15 years later. We'll see. I'll post my review after i read'em. Hoping that they still rock my socks like they did back then

Welcome back - I hope you find that you still love the stories. I find it funny that somebody would say anything negative about Image right now. I read about 15 books per month and 2 are DC 1 is Marvel and 1 is Dark Horse...the other 11 are Image.
Let us know what you think and if you are looking for more great Image titles let us know.

I'm not sure what the general consensus is of Image books that are currently being released, I just noticed that most fanboys these days rag on the 1st gen Image books of the 90's (Spawn, WildC.A.T.S, Pitt, Youngblood, etc.) for being "all style and no substance".
The 2 exceptions generally are The Savage Dragon (people still give Larson a pile of credit, and deservedly so, for keeping the series going so long) and The Maxx (To be honest, I re-read the Maxx books I had (the first 25), end to end, about 2 years ago, and dug'em even more than i did as a kid. I'm going to have to track down the rest of the series one of these days).
At the TIME, Image was just SO far ahead of the curve artistically, that maybe it's tru the we, the readers, DIDN'T notice the shortcomings in the writing. I hope not though.
BrikHed21
07-20-2008, 01:57 PM
Oh trust me I understand that sentiment. I have read Spawn since day one, issue 180 released 2 weeks ago, and most people are in disbelief that anyone would read the book.
If you look at most books from the 90's not just Image, they were all the same. XMen was no better than most of the Image books.
I don't know if the current mood from readers is different towards Image. I challenge people to find books better the Proof, The Walking Dead, or Invincible.
I hope you enjoy your Spawn read and hope you pickup the current stuff too.

It is never too early to look ahead to the next issue especially you consider WANDA DIES. The preview clearly states that either Wanda dies or Spawn ends and we all know that Spawn is going to continue....

Yes, I am not sure Hine does the best job for the first time reader always but I consider it a lot like Grant Morrison's run on Batman. If you just picked up Batman for RIP you can catch on but if you were there since the start 25 issues ago you get so much more out of it.

Cent for cent the comics that Image are putting out deliver much, much more than the Big Two. It may not be that way for everyone, but I can't say there's anything Marvel and DC are putting out that can compete.
I may have to drop some more titles from other companies now, just to be able to pick up a couple more Image titles.

Quick update on my "Spawn re-read" :
Re-read the first 5 issues. Com pletely fell in love with them again. Todd's art was just spot-on and perfect for the feel of the books, and the slow build-up/set-up in the 1st 5 are great. Starting the 2nd 5...RIGHT NOW! lol.
I think I actually may enjoy them a bit more NOW then when i was a snot-nosed pre-teen/teeanger the first time around.
I know I'll caught flack for this, but, there's an obviously strong Miller influence in the writing in the first few issues and I, for one, think he actually beats Miller at his own game. Probably not a popular opinion, but that's how I feel about it.

It is a good read and I would recommend it. However if you are new to the book it can be hard to jump on 179 issues behind the current issue. If you are new to Spawn then The Armaggedon Collection is a great jumping on point.

I'm just glad you still stop by. I'm starting to think that BEN and I are the only Spawn fans left. You have been quiet (or hanging in the WarRoom) and STINGER has been hunting for Wendal to come back.
I don't feel the Spawn love from everyone.
My apologies. Lately work has been getting in my way of stuff like fun and been getting rather tired. If you've noticed, even in other forums I'm not talking as much. But I can't resist talking about Two-Face, tho.
Spawn love is still there. Still feel burnt out 'bout the news, though, I just try not to think about it.

LOL! Its true. We just sent the Marvel offices a care package consisting of denim shirts, Bring Back Wendell t-shirts, original artwork and copies of the petition (which they hung up on the wall and signed-sort of LOL). Rosemann mentioned it in his My Cup O' Rosemann (filling in for Joe Q.). Also, I was working on the BringBackWendell project fanboy wiki page - http://www.projectfanboy.com/wikifans/index.php?title=BringBackWendell.com
Oh yes back to Spawn. I wonder how much of a story Hine still had left to tell? It would be interesting hearing his thoughts where he was going to take Spawn. Then Spawn:One More Day hit and that was adiosed. :evilangry:

There were some people not into his run. You see some of them post in the discussion threads in the spawn forums. While a majority were enjoying it, a few didn't. Which is how it is with basically every book.
I, myself, was actually a Hine fan before he came on board the book. When he was announced to write Spawn, I was so darn excited, it wasn't funny. I do remember people thinking, "Huh? Who's that?" Heh. And when it was announced he was leaving, I felt really sad and was thinking of dropping the book but it's really not fair if I do. I'm going to give the new team the same chance I'd give anyone else coming into the look, especially since even before Hine came into the series I was a Spawn fan... which is quite ironic, in a way...

I'll get back to it eventually, but I'm catching up on other stuff.
I hope it goes into something else soon, 'cause beating the shit out of mercenaries and hanging out with hobos in dumpsters is getting a bit repetitive. =p

I haven't seen either of them in a while either. I think the "Hine-factor" took some steam out of people when the announcement came. So many people were so excited about the direction the book was heading and now find themselves scratching their heads now waiting to see what is next.
I do love that I can call you and STINGER out though and go to bed and you guys can have a great conversation

That is funny. The best comparison I can make to the above is saying why would I go see The Dark Knight? I have seen Adam West do Batman on TV... things have changed a little.

Spawn #185 is coming out in October and Todd McFarlane is involved again. He is not drawing or writing but coming up with storylines and layouts. There will be three covers (one by Greg Capullo, one by Whilce Portacio, and one by Todd McFarlane).
The event is being called SPAWN: ENDGAME

even though all those early issues were a blur, i liked the one where he was fighting some big guy (i think it was someone from youngblood, whatever that is), but he can't use his power 'cause of his meter, so he goes and finds/jacks his arsenal from some base.

I believe for his covers that he has done lately he does it all. I know a few of them we're digital painting which aren't as good as his brushes.
I can't figure him out. He is not the NAME of McFarlane or Lee but he has the same talent. Other than creating The Creech and working on Spawn he always stayed low key.

...I mean, I'm not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. People who have been around for 185 issues aren't going to say, "What the f___ is this?" For me, it's more of, the people who have gotten a little disenchanted over the 184 issues, what was I doing wrong? What did I do? The easiest answer is I took my eye off the ball. And shame on me. I don't have any excuses other than me. So I'm going, you know what? If you want a book that is what you think it could be, there's only one way to get that. You're going to have to get engaged, and now I'm engaged.
But of course, taking your eyes off the ball was what made Hine's run so great. Whatever. Seems weird with all the good reviews the recent run has been, there hasn't been one mention of it in any of Todd's interviews. Sure it didn't sell too well, but how many readers have actually been entertained and all agreed it's the best the book has been?
BrikHed21
08-09-2008, 08:12 AM
His eye was off the ball during most of Holguin's first run too and that did not make the book great. Hine could have been fabulous with out without Todd's input. I am eager to see what they have planned - but I am sad to see Hine leave. It is like the last day of school. You will miss your friends but summer vacations is worth looking forward to.

Spawn: Endgame Comic Book Art Contest (http://endgame.spawn.com/?p=190)
Posted by Endgame in Art (http://endgame.spawn.com/?cat=6) on August 08th, 2008
Draw Spawn - You Could Win Original Artwork by Whilce Portacio
To celebrate the new direction and creative team of Spawn #185, we’re launching an epic contest - and the stakes are high.
We want you to show us your vision of the Al Simmons Spawn character, in the media of your choice. We’ll narrow the entries down to the best, post them on our Spawn: Endgame Web site (endgame.spawn.com (http://endgame.spawn.com/)) and our myspace page (myspace.com/officialmcfarlane (http://www.myspace.com/officialmcfarlane/)), and let the public choose the winners.
http://endgame.spawn.com/wp-content/uploads/endgame_contest_photo_01_sm.jpg (http://www.spawn.com/news/images/endgame_contest_photo_01_dp.jpg) http://endgame.spawn.com/wp-content/uploads/endgame_contest_photo_02_sm.jpg (http://www.spawn.com/news/images/endgame_contest_photo_02_dp.jpg)
The first place winner will receive an original full-body drawing of Spawn by world-renown comic artist Whilce Portacio. Second prize is an original Whilce Portacio Spawn head sketch. Not prints. Not copies, the real deal. Needless to say, both of these pieces of one-of-a-kind original artwork by the new Spawn artist are as good as (maybe even better than) gold.
Here’s the nuts and bolts:
Entries must be received by midnight, EST, Friday, Sept. 12, 2008.
Limit of 1 entry per person
Your entry must be your final piece; no updates or revisions will be accepted.
Email your entry to contest@endgame.spawn.com (contest@endgame.spawn.com?subject=SPAWN%20ENDGAME %20ENTRY%20CONTEST). Title your email SPAWN ENDGAME ENTRY CONTEST
Ideally, we’d like entries to be 1,200 x 1,800 pixels, at least 150 dpi. Minimum size specifications: 600 x 900 pixels, 150 dpi. Entries larger than 1,200 x 1,800 pixels will be disqualified.
With your email submission, include your full name, title of your entry and, if you’d like, a brief description of your creative thought process.
All submissions become the sole property of TMP, Inc. We’ll post the best of the best on endgame.spawn.com (http://endgame.spawn.com/) and myspace.com/officialmcfarlane (http://www.myspace.com/officialmcfarlane/) the first week of October. Voting will be open to the public for three weeks, and the winners announced at the end of October, coinciding with the release of Spawn #185: Endgame.

Yeah, David's stuff are a lot of fun for me to read. I've re-read his stuff more than any other person's stuff. I really don't know why, but his stuff just stands out so much for me and always puts a smile to my face. I was a fan since his District X so imagine my excite when he was tapped for Spawn.
My thoughts for #181 (Contains some spoilers!!)
Very intense issue but it felt rather rushed. You can definitely see the H2 team trying to wrap up their run due to the change of pace recently compared to their first issues of their run. I also read through this rather quickly, but I still feel this issue said what it needed to say. The splash page with Spawn bursting through the house calling Wanda a whore was... wow! And all the Spawn shots were so damn monstrous and fantastic! Definitely a better issue than last although I feel the art last issue was superior.
And I guess we see the answer to who the female Spawn is! Damn, I fear what Dave'll do to her! :frown:

I would suggest you wait until October with Spawn issue #185 that starts the whole ENDGAME direction that Spawn is going. That is the time the new team of McFarlane/Holguin/Portacio take over the book.
Spawn has been amazing from #150 through current with David Hine writing the book and if you are looking for some great reading pick up Spawn: The Armaggedon Collection in trade.

Any guesses as to the new direction Spawn will take starting with issue 185? I believe someone has mentioned they think one of Al's brothers will take the Spawn suit. I think Portacio mentioned in an interview that he's interested in Hell's factions and exploring the universe of Spawn.
I enjoyed those issues in Hell when Nyx stole the Spawn symbiote. I also wish that they would continue with the Cogliostro thread after he turned on Al and started building the tower in Hell.
I'm also in the same camp as those that hate to see David Hine leave, but I think Spawn could be interesting if they delve further into the mythos of Hell. I'm also hoping they further this current thread with Wanda. I'm tired of Al pining over her. Its nice to see him angry with her for a change even if it isn't just.

That is the BIG question - where will Spawn go in the future. I cannot imagine Todd giving up on Al Simmons being Spawn. I do think there will be some fractions of Hell in the mix. Al's younger brother Richie is in Hell and his mom is a world class nut-job Satan worshiper so I think they could play against Spawn.
One to two pages before this one there are some sketches that Portacio did for the upcoming issues. He is going back to Todd's look with regards to Spawn.
David Hine will be missed immensely. I have told him 1000 times that I will miss his work.

It looks like the suit is asserting its own will against Al's wishes. I'm not sure if the suit will find a new host and Al will fight it or if the suit is being manipulated by Mammon. Mammon has been in the background quite a bit, but I'm sure he'll be making a major move before issue 185.
David Hine has progressed the story quite a bit in his tenure so I'm expecting there will be some kind of major plot progression before the new creative team begins. I'm hoping the old creative team leaves with a bang and things are shaken up before the switch.

And that Spawn Endgame ad is pretty cool. Is it in the comic pages, or just an online ad. That's so much better than the crappy looking Final Crisis ads in DC comics.

SPOILERS INCLUDED FOR #182
This was another great issue and to honest nothing less would be acceptable from Hine. I liked how this story referenced a lot of past issues to show you are tying a lot of the story together, but you have done that throughout your entire run. I think a lot of people saw Morana being the daughter of Al and Wanda but I also think each and everyone of those people is still shocked to see it come true. My only dislike is that to make this viable you have to break out with a "nobody remembers this" moment. I wish there would have been a way to tie things together better than that.
If Morana is their daughter is she not human? Is it just her blood line that makes her be this crazed monster? Also why do Nyx look different as She-Spawn this time versus the first time around? Each time Al has reconnected with the symbiot he has looked the same. Just a question.
That art continues to be above average but not great. There are some pages that just make me say "WOW" and others that make me think they were rushed to be done. It is up and down but I have felt that through most of Haberlin's run (and if I had to be the artist and the editor I might be rushing at times too).
All in all this was another great issue and I will be sad to see the H2OH (Hine | Haberlin OH **** THEY ARE AMAZING) team say good bye. I hope we get to see you guys down the road (I have said Curse of the Spawn a million times) in the world of Spawn.

That would be SUPER cool - but I doubt he will, it would be distracting to the new team. Hine is a class act and would never steal the spotlight.

After this issue, heck yeah! The one and only and last thing I remember being so great of a revelation in Holguin's run was the Cog betrayal. There wasn't been anything much else till Hine came in. Damn.
Also, Brik! Come to the Hine forum to discuss the new issue!

 Okay, so here's what would have happened...
Well, no, you're right, it wouldn't be appropriate. There are a lot of things that won't be tied up before we leave the book but I'm sure Brian Holguin will get around to dealing with some of them. And for the rest, if you ever bump into me at a Con, ask me then.

Man you have no idea....he was going to start bringing back Spawns of the past to fight it out for the right to make Morana their Queen. Spawn: Morana's Gauntlet was going to be a year long event, like Armageddon, for the right to marry Morana and give birth to the new ruler of Hell. Spawn: Hell's Son was going to be the next event and showed how Al, Mammon, and the new Child fight for the right to rule Hell. The final event book was Spawn: Heaven's Fire was going to involve the angels coming back and plotting to overthrow Hell and destroy evil once and for all.
David had 3 freaking years planned out. The Spawn Legacy Trilogy sounds so freaking amazing. Al's mom and brother were going to arrange for the whole Gauntlet while his Grandfather was going to try and end the Curse once and for all bringing the forces of Heaven together.
Unreal David Hine - you had an incredible vision of where to take this book. Thanks for sharing. ;)

On second thought, maybe you shouldn't. One day you might get a second chance to write about Spawn. A third chance, ten chances.
Brian Holguin is a good writer and might improve along the way, but one day he'll probably want to hand over the torch to someone. And one day you might end up having that torch agin. So, hopefully if and when that day comes you get to use those ideas. Don't let us spoil your plans.
Good luck with the next issue.
Does any one know what week of September the next issue is coming out?

Got an interesting info on my question here.
He really is technical with the art. It'll be interesting how it translates to the comic. It sounds great. :
this is what I think needs to happen more in the industry…open conversations between us “behind the camera” and you guys “out in the field”.
Well, we’ve got alot to cover…
Most of the new characters we are developing are support human characters. I can’t be specific right now but you are right that we take our experiences and understandings from observation to biuld characters. One character is a girl I knew that was obsessed with various things over the years. Trading one obsession for another and the odd thing was each new obsession seemed to be contrary to the prior one, total opposites. This character will help our main character learn about himself and gain confidence from her. Another character is based upon a guy I new who was many things. When I met him he was a simple almost geeky guy then months later when I met him again he was a rich and successful guy, then again later he was a totally different guy. This character will figure out alot of things we are setting up.
Our favorite new character once you hear his job description you’ll laugh and say of course, why haven’t we seen this guy before. Todd and Brian figured this guy out and desribed him as a weazle of a guy like Dustin Hoffman’character in “Midnight Cowboy” just trying to make a living in a superhero world.
Of the existing characters like Violator it was simply a case of who is he now and where do we want to take him and then okay how do we first get him into a situation where he goes in this new direction. Kinda like because we know this guy inside out we can set up things in his path that we know will make him go in the direction that we want. That’s actually alot of the fun…
The new art direction is a simple more realistic style. Less hatching and more just form lines and proper shadows. We are overall trying to direct the eye of the reader to the focus of the panel. We are using the usual tools of positive-negative space, directional black shapes, and contract between ares of heavy detail and texture and areas of minimum detail. We are doing it in a more forceful way. My actyal art style is still totally recognizable as mine but is a more refine version and therefore more graphic and iconic.
We are also experimenting with a new digital inking style that does not have a goal of making pencils appear to be inke but more of a style that takes scanned pencils and tries to make it look lke charcoal drawings. The reasoning for it is for me to be able to pencil in an area of shadow and/or black and then to digitally go in and add variations of grey and black to those black shadow areas and like in real life add form and shape into those typically flat black areas. This excites me as an artist because in a very simple way without myself drawing any differently I can get more form and shape out of the same drawing. Only bummer is I have to be extremely careful of getting my pages dirty with stray line and smudges…
Because of that it is dictating to Todd and I a simpler coloring style. A style that pays strict attention to the impact or non impact of saturated colors. Our primarly palleatte will be dull earth tones so using areas of saturated color in key areas will draw figures out. We are also playing with real scene coding. Like in most movies now where all scenes with the villian are red tinted and all the scenes with the hero is blue tinted. This helps out alot with storytelling and mood.
Whats also interesting is that because we are doing almost all of it digitally we can up to the momment of shipping to printer we can look and say hey the pacing works better if we move this panel here or there. Or what if we lengthen the panel horizontally we can really get the effect the plot calls for, etc. Even tho’ Todd and I are both working on the layouts we are also dogitally editing pages layout and storytelling digitally all the time. I kind of look at it as I am the director and shoo it the way my head things at the moment of shooting but then later on in the editing room I can rearrange things depending on what all the stuff looks like together on the page…its a real fun kinetic environment…something real different̷
