I Just subscribed to the Batman comic book series, and I was wondering how many back issues I should try to find to get what's going on in the story. I was also wondering if anyone knows what issue I will most likely start with if I ordered my subscription on Febuary 29.
Thanks for the help :)
If you're subscribing to 'Batman' (as opposed to 'Tec). Then you need to get 'Batman and Son' Hard cover. You should then get 'The Resurection of Ra's Al Ghul TPB- which I believe comes out this month. However you will still need to get #672- and onwards to bring you up to speed. I don't know where you live or if you have comic shop near you. But if not I'm sure you can get back issues online.

TalesofWonder.com is a great place to buy trades. Excellent prices. Happy hunting.

I was in the same boat as you 2 days ago. I'd start with the batman and son hardcover, the singles of issues 667-669, and 672-674(the current issue) Skip the resurrection of ras I asked about and it is utter rubbish and non essential to morrisions story. If you mean detective comics then most of those are self contained so start with Aprils' issue. Their are 3 tpbs of Dinis' run so far they are Batman Face the Face, Batman Detective, and Batman Death and the City. Tales of Wonder is a great site.

For the issues written by Grant Morrison (The current writer of the book):
You might want to get the "Batman and Son" tpb or hardcover (As Mia recommended), it collects issues #655-658.
Skip #663, which was a bit of an oddball issue.
Issues #664, 665, 667-669 are all required reading to be up-to-speed on the current storyline.
Skip the "Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul" issues (For the Batman title, itself, they were #670 & 671).
Definitely get issues #672 & 674......673 is a part of the storyline, of course, but to be honest, unless you're wanting to be a completist, that was kind of a throwaway issue, in my opinion. It mostly consisted of Batman hallucinating while he was out of it.
I didn't mention issue #666, as I haven't read the issue. It might be required reading for all I know, or maybe not.

I would start at a little known book called Detective Comics. You want to get the undervalued issue #27.
From there it should be easy.

Definitely read the start of Grant Morrisons run's in Batman 655-658. Also, the most recent storyline in Batman, was the reason why Grant Morrison was brought to Batman. So the status of Batman is going to be radically altered in the next coming monthes.
I'd also recommend all star Batman and the Boy Wonder. You'll either absolutely love it, or hate it. But i'm loving it.
Also, Paul Dini has done such a great job with Detective Comics. Most of his stories are self contained to one comic book, you'll really get alot of character development and action in just 22 pages. At most, you'll have 2 part storylines.

Dini had nothing to do with Face the Face, that was James Robinson.
