Call me new-fasioned, but I can't get enough of the Barron Von Blitzshlag. I was a Zemo II lover, but "Zemo: Born Better" was so bad it soured me on him for a good long time. BvB is all right by me.

Call me new-fasioned, but I can't get enough of the Barron Von Blitzshlag. I was a Zemo II lover, but "Zemo: Born Better" was so bad it soured me on him for a good long time. BvB is all right by me.

Zemo the Younger (Helmut), all the way. One of the most interesting, developed, and complex characters in the MU currently IMO.

You know, it seems like if you are a baron, you're pretty much screwed. I mean, you have CAPTAIN America & Barracuda, DOCTOR Strange & Doom, BROTHER Voodoo & Grimm, MADAME Web & Hydra. If you're a KNIGHT, you can be good (Black), bad (Dread), or somewhere in between (Moon).

But name one 'Baron' on the side of the angels! Nope, they're all bastards.

And what the hell is a 'Baron' anyway? Is he related to the king? Who gives him that title? Someone look it up for me on Wikipedia!

i think it's just a title that evil people give themselves because they aren't really royalty.

Zemo the younger for me. I've always liked him, but the work Busiek and Nicieza did in developing him in Thunderbolts gives him the edge of Baron Blood, my second favourite Baron.

Or is it just comics and I thinking way too much about it, which could very well be the case?

"Von" doesn't necessarily denote nobility, at least post-monarchical Europe.

Though not my favourite, Baron Brimstone gets points for alliteration.

As for Counts, they get a bit better deal than Barons. At least the female equivalent: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. And IIRC one of Strange's friends/fellow mages was a count as well.

Another vote for Helmut Zemo. I've been a fan of his ever since his first "official" appearance as Baron Zemo circa Cap #275 or so. He's had so many great moments: the "I wasn't wearing my mask!!" rant and melted-candle wax face reveal in Cap #277; his big win (w/ his Masters of Evil) over Cap & the Avengers in "Under Siege" along with cruelly tearing up Cap's last picture of his mom; the final pages of the first issue of Thunderbolts where he and the Masters v2 reveal their true IDs; even that neat bit in 'Death of Vermin' where he tries on Spider-Man's mask & waxes philosophic about the price he's made trying to follow in his father's footsteps. Zemo: Born Better was a little overwrought, but I liked it as an extension of his overall character arc. I'd love to see where he goes from there, but I think Fabian was the only Marvel writer with any interest in Zemo, so he's probably off to hang out in character limbo.

Runner up is Baron Wolfgang Strucker. He's such a great 'Bond villain' archetype, with his bald cranium, facial scar, and monocle. Plus the cool gadgets (love that Satan Claw), army of fanatical followers, and expensive world-takeover schemes. Like Zemo, I hope he resurfaces at some point, too, since Hydra is so omnipresent in the current MU and it would be easy to work him in. I think Fabian was the last guy to use Strucker, too, back in an issue of Thunderbolts.

Third is Baron Blood. A Nazi vampire? Man, you don't get much more compound-word evil than that.

Baron Zemo the one who's alive is the only Baron I like and that's because of his outstanding run in the Thunderbolts. He need's to make a come back but in what book I don't know. I don't think it should be the current TBolts. He needs to distance himself from them so he can be a bigger treat in the Marvel Universe. I guess the only leaves the Mighty Avergers or maybe the Fantastic Four.
