I may be wrong, but I think that Ultimate Spider Man launched... was it 2000? If that's the case, then as of 2008, the Ultimate universe is kind of... sort of... approaching a decade of publication. This seems a tad more than other 'fads' that Marvel have attempted over the years.
As a die-hard fan of the Ultimate universe, what it stands for, what it is, and what it still could be, I'm interested to know what people's thoughts are on what it would take for the line to continue for another ten years (yes, I know it's only 2008. But I'm drunk. And on crack). What storylines would you have, who would you have return, what new ultimisations would be cool, which writers and artists would keep the line relevant, brilliant and entertaining?
As you may be able to tell, I'm a big fan. I want to see this line continue for as long as it can, as the new century's version of Marvel. How can this be done?

I think just maintaining a consistently modern edge over 616 would be the key, so that it stays somewhat of a gimmick but not so much a gimmick that it gets tiring or overdone.
I think we should stay away from Loeb and Kirkman not just because they're terrible but because they risk turning the comics into more traditional stories and despite what 616 is turning into now I still think UU will be at risk if it does that. Regressing is not the answer.
USM and Ultimates will always be the big two, but I definately think that UXM and UFF need a shot in the heart. More modern takes on characters, more faithfulness to the original idea of the UU.

You tricked me! I clicked on this thread wondering how Futurama was related to the Ultimate Marvel universe!
That being said, I have only read Brian K. Vaughan and Robert Kirkman's runs of Ultimate X-Men (what...like issues 46 through whatever is the newest?). Initially I picked up Ultimate X-Men 46 - 49 solely for Brian K. Vaughan (I'm a BKV-fanboy). Even though he was writing, I was skeptical about how I would feel about the Ultimate Universe. But, that first story arc was good enough for me to pick up the next, then the next, up until the most recent issue. I was surprised to find out that I enjoyed what I was reading, and the universe these characters were existing in.
I think it was entirely on a Writer's Basis, though. Because I doubt I'll pick up Ultimate X-Men after Robert Kirkman is gone, and I've never ventured much out of the X-Men. I did read the Ultimate Galactus stuff. Aside from turning my favorite character into a swarm of ships, I enjoyed the universe it was set in.
I certainly wouldn't mind if the Ultimate Universe kept going for many years to come. It's kind of rare for Marvel to have alternate versions of the characters.

Seriously, one of the neat things about the Ultimate line is that it's a small group of titles being run by a relatively small group of (for the most part) above-average creators, with minimal turnover. The line hasn't over-expanded, in terms of both titles and writers. That's not the only key to continuing success, but . . . if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

1) keep the ultimate line small
2) ensure bendis never leaves the line
3) great creative teams
4) concepts have to remain REALISTIC. this cannot be overemphasized. some of kirkman's and most of carey's ideas are too far fetched
5) references should always be made to the super-soldier formula being the origin of most characters. brilliant idea. pure-genius
6) Limit jeph loeb's influence. he's writing is a little to over the top.
er... that's all i can think of for now.

A lot of people say how much Carey's one of the problems but I really just think he got his lead from Millar, he did the great Think Tank arc then Millar did time travel, interdimensional travel and other humanoid species and from there on it Carey's more ludicrous stories didn't seem so out of depth.

I honestly like Carey's stories. It wouldn't be the FF if the writers weren't shooting for the fences, big idea-wise. The way he's melded the regular MU cosmic landscape with Kirby's New Gods and given it an Ultimate twist has been darn impressive.
I question the selection of artists he's worked with (aside from Ferry, who was incredible), but the stories are right on.

-Ultimate infinity gauntlet/war/crusade
-Ultimate dark phoenix- involving the entire ultimate lineup not just the x-men
-My guess is that Ultimatum will be about the death of the zombieverse, Ult. Doom will return and the Ultimates will meet the avengers in some form or fashion. Supreme power will merge with the Ultimate Universe completely and the max titles will all take place in the ultimate universe.
-Everyone just assumes that the universe that dies is the ultimate one but that doesn't make any sense to me, especially considering the amount of money marvel makes off of it.

As long as the Ultimate titles remain distinct from 616 in terms of (most) characters and plot, it'll be fine.

1) Do not let Bendis anywhere near Deadpool. Bendis can suck a big one for what he did to him.
2) Do not give cookies to Loeb.

2) Do not give cookies to Loeb. Also, don't get water on him, don't expose him to bright lights, and don't feed him after midnight.
