View Full Version : Fegredo Commissions...

Hi everybody,

I've received quite a number of pm's and emails about commissions and thought I'd post a notice here rather than reply to them all individually as I have been doing.

I've been thinking about commissions but I can't get away from the fact I have a stack of pages for The Wild Hunt needing filling, I think that the book is far more important ... if I was as fast as the supremely talented Guy Davis, no problem but alas that's not the case.

Instead I've come up with an alternative... Mike has generously suggested I do my own con sketchbook, and rather than go straight pen and ink doodles I'm thinking of doing them all line and wash. I suggested to Mike I could revisit classic scenes from Hellboy, facing off with the Bog Roosh for example... anyway, I'll get the book together and then the paintings will be available for purchase after. This way I'm doing sketches that I actually want to do rather than being asked for stuff I'd rather not do... you wouldn't believe some of the daft stuff that has been asked of me in the past!

Meanwhile I'm happy to do quick $20 sketches at cons... gotta pay for my hotel and flight somehow!

So there you go, if you're in New york, snag me then.

And so you know the sort of sketchbook sketches I'm talking about, here are a couple of examples along with a non Hellboy piece illustrating Heinlein's Have Spacesuit- Will Travel.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the kind words- I should make it clear though that the sketches I posted are not the $20 ones, they are an example of what will be in the sketchbook!

It's really not about the money though, this is about spending my time on Hellboy... if i start doing commissions that just makes the book later...

Duncan, any chance these sketchbooks will be made available through your cafe press site or will they be con exclusives? Just want to start planning out who I need to bribe to pick me up one :D

Man that is some good stuff - love the detail in that spacesuit! Much more finished than your average sketchbook (the wash really adds a lot to the overall impression of each piece). I look forward to the sketchbook and I hope you'll possibly have them at San Diego this year. Thanks for giving us the straight dope on these.

Correct me if I am wrong-

After meeting Christine Mignola in person I would swear that Kate Corrigan was heavily based on her. To support my theory, Duncan's Kate looks a lot like Christine to me.

Looking forward to the sketchbook with much anticipation, together with the availability of the originals.

I like fish(es).:)

I understand. However, I admire you a lot. Here in Italy I still cannot see the job that you have done on Hellboy and I hope to do it soon! As usual we are always late with the publication..

Those wash pages are incredible, Duncan. Your group shot makes me want to see you illustrating BPRD adventures from a lighter time. Cloning you still not a possibility though so I'll just wait for The Wild Hunt. The two page spread with Baba Yaga is also amazing too. Sign me up for a sketchbook although you've ignited an original art hunger in me.

Thanks all, glad the line and wash is working for you... now I just have to find time to do the drawings... should be fun choosing the scenes to revisit though, perfect excuse to re-read all the books!

I'll drop in again when there's more to show/tell. Back to the drawing board for now...

Cheers,
Duncan

Research is always the fun part! :D

Key scene suggestion: Hellboy and Hecate confront one another in Wake the Devil. Wake is still my favorite of Mike's illustrated works (and probably always will be), so this scene is certainly a fav'.

Ooooh........I like! Very nice!
Should we all get in the line for sketchbooks now? :D

The spacesuit looks fantastic.

The sketchbook will be ready when it's ready simply, I'm not putting a time scale on it as it will be drawn/painted in whatever free time I salvage. The thing about being freelance of course is that you never have any real free time, always something else that needs drawing!

Whenever it is done I'll make it easily available, one way or another.

As for content, you're free to speculate but that'll be down to my whims so we'll see.

Gorgeous stuff!!

I would also love to chime in that I hope you make it to San Diego this year.
Michael

p.s. Is "The Wild Hunt" the 8 issue Hellboy series you are working on? Regardless of the name, any guess on when the next Hellboy series might be ready for print? Mid-2009?

I never get tired of your stuff!

I don't mean to open a can of worms, but I'd love to see you do a sketch for your sketchbook of Hellboy from "Bones of Giants." It's actually one of my favorite Hellboy stories, and as it was a book and not a comic we don't get too many visual takes from it. You'd knock that one out of the park, sir!

Yes, The Wild Hunt is 8 issues, couldn't say when exactly but I think the fourth quarter of 2008.

I'd love to do San Diego but as I'll be in New York it seems unlikely. It's a big expense from the UK and again, it's a matter of time.

I am otherwise scheduled to be at KOMIKS,DK Copenhagen International Comics Festival May31st-June 1st and JORNADAS DE CÓMIC DE AVILÉS, Avilés, Spain in September ... European cons are somewhat nearer for me!

I'm looking forward to the sketchbook Duncan. I have to say the pictures you posted are fantastic, and much more finished than i would have expected for a sketchbook. Good times.

Is there any chance you might be at BICS this year? I wanted to go last year but it didn't pan out. I'm planning insanely early this year tho. I reckon if at least yourself and D'Israeli attend it'll be well worth the expense.

'Sketchbook' is really a reference to so called convention sketchbooks, which mostly are full of finished art... makes no sense I know. My actual sketchbook work can be found in my STUFF book that I publish through Cafe Press.

I'll more than likely be at Bics but as with all cons attendance is subject to last minute changes due to unavoidable events such as life stuff or editorial panic!

I should also be at the Bristol show on at least the 10th of May.

Ah cool... if circumstances allow then i'll see you at BICS hopefully.

And yeah i suppose sketchbook is a bit of a misnomer. I have about half-a-dozen and now that i think about it only the Eric Powell one seems to have actual SKETCHES in it. Not that i'm complaining.

I think i'll look for the STUFF book too tho... the more the merrier.

Thanks for the reply Duncan.
