In the world of films CGI seems to have all but replaced traditional 2-D animation as the format of choice for animated movies. They're everywhere! And they are always family movies too, and most aren't very good.

But what about t.v., that magical box I play video games on :p. I've seen a CGI show or two, the ones that were made by Mainframe, and there was that show in Nickelodeon about the smart kid, and I know there are others out there. Being a relatively new format, there's always bound to be some duds out there, but also some good one. Which of those CGI shows stand out above the others? What would you recommend to a friend interested in the style? What you watch?

Of the genre, Reboot and Beast Wars are the two tops series for me.

Technically speaking, by today's standards they're fairly primitive looking, but the stories are what gave them their charm.

Reboot was a hoot. Great parodies, in-jokes, and performances vocally from Tony Jay. Great man, great persona as Megabyte.

Mainframe went from all-time classics like Reboot and Shadow Raiders to Barbie movies. Unfathomable.

I never saw all of them, but I really liked Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles.

I enjoyed 'Beast Wars' and 'Shadow Raiders', and I liked 'Reboot' too (though especially the final season), but those shows are already ten years old... Like MaxOfSteel said, they look primitive now... You can't look at the explosions, for instance, and be impressed anymore (mountains explode in a million square fragments!), also because of all the sophisticated CGI that appears in movies and stuff.

I wish I could recommend a current CGI show, but I haven't been watching much T.V. lately.

I loved ReBoot. It started out like Kid Video but turned into this crazy deep story driven show.

Good on you Canadians!

Gotta throw in my lot with Reboot. I loved the hell out that show.

Reboot. Where the men are manly, the women are smokin' hot, the villians are comprised of equal parts evil and awesome, and having sex for a whole minute makes you a god.

In ReBoot time, a minute is roughly a month.

reboot ftw, has it ever been released in complete seasons on dvd?

i have heard of the cgi starship troopers show, and would love to see it as the paul verhoeven movie was one of my favorite sci-fi movies of all time. (weird choice, but yeah)

Not really a fan of CGI shows, but one favorite of mine is Beast Wars.

As a kid, I'd force myself to wake up an hour early before school just so I could catch reruns. Kick ass show!

Reboot and Beast Wars, not because of the CGI really(although it would have hurt the shows not to be done in CGI) but really because of the quality of the plots and stories.

My favorite is easily "Beast Wars". It's just plain fantastic. After that, "Voltron: The Third Dimension". Then finally, "Reboot".

You might have seen all of them. I don't think that they ever finished the show. It's too bad, it was really good.

To echo about half the people, Beast Wars is awesome. My heart will always belong to Cheetor, all three forms of him.

I know my favorite is a bit controversal and there are not too many who admit to liking it (for some reason...) but I really, really, really liked Beast Machines. Sure, it kind of had some tree hugging going on (nothing wrong with that imo. House hugging is cool too. hehe), but the story was complex, ongoing, and there were some cool twists. Plus the CGI was a bit better then Beast Wars too imo. My comparison has always been: Beast Wars was the Next Generation of Transformers and Beast Machines was Deep Space 9 (or Babylon 5) of Transformers.

Now, my second favorite would be Beast Wars. I especially like the storyline with the orignal Transformers (the multi-part episode). Also the Starscream episode. :)

As for Reboot, it was kind of neat. I was never a regular viewer of that.

Reboot, especially the final season.

But like others have said before, not so much for the CG. Reboot had an amazing story behind it, and characters I could really care about. It wasn't just about selling action figures, though they did get into that towards the end.

I passingly recall they were planning a new Reboot show awhile back, did anything ever happen with that?

I was just disappointed with Beast Machines. Kinda sullies the memory of Beast Wars to some fans too. They won the Beast Wars!!!!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "War Planets". from the Mainframe (Reboot).
The also did a cartoon called "Action Man" which started cool and was then dumbed down after a few episodes. (probably one of those cases were they thought "the kids" couldn't follow it, when it was the execs who were to stupid to understand.)

ReBoot! The only problem I had as a kid was that YTV kept showing the same damned episodes OVER AND OVER again.

They did the same thing with the 90s Spider-Man show, especially season two. Episode one, then two, then seven, then four, then two, then nine, then two, then six, then seven, then two... Neogenic Nightmare never truly ended up in here... *taps skull*

Those two were genuine cult classics!
