I just got my first exposure to the marvel ultimate universe from that gah lak tus story. I thought it was a very solid story. The only thing that struck me as extremely amusing was the short banter between Thor and Carol Danvers, and the fantastic four. As kids, the FF4 seem WAY cooler than their earth-616 counterparts.

So...can anyone suggest some good reads while I'm riding this wave?

I'm kinda fishing for the humor edge of the stories. But any good titles will do.

Stay away from Ultimate Power, Ultimates 3, and basically anything with the name 'Jeph Loeb' on it. And mayb stay away from Kirkman's run on Ultimate X-Men.
All the rest is pretty much golden.

Ultimate X-men - vol 8 New Mutants is great, vol 17 Sentinels is actually really good (I like Kirkman's run). Pretty much everything from 1 - 13 is brilliant, after that it gets a little weird but it's still a good read.
Ultimate FF - vol 5 and 6 are the best, stay away from God War it's terrible but if you want to follow the book it introduces some of the more recent additions so it'd probably be best to pick it up.
Ultimate Spiderman - Pretty much everything =) I can't pick out any best bits as I haven't read it all (I'm collecting the TPB)

Ultimates 1 and 2
Ultimate Spider-Man

Can't go wrong with those.

As much as I despise the UU on principle, I did read quite a bit of UXM and enjoyed the earlier issues in trade/hardcover omnibus.

This is the right answer.
U1+2 are great.
With the exception of a few less than great (but still good) arcs, USM is top notch.

Ultimate Spiderman is my favorite from the the ultimate universe. I suggest that you pick up the first trade and see if you like it. In fact some spiderman fans prefer the ultimate spiderman now over the 616 one because of OMD.

After reading hte boards I have a feeling I am one of the few that likes UXM, so im not too sure if you would like that or not.

I enjoyed Ultimates 1 and 2, however i havent read 3.

Yes. Those things right there.

Also: The first eighteen issues (or three trades) of Ultimate Fantastic Four are solid comics, especially if you liked those characters in the Gah Lak Tus trilogy. (Since the writer of that story wrote issues 7 - 18 of UFF.)

Ultimates 1 and 2 are an absolute must, sheer brilliance and at times very, very funny. Likewise volumes 1-6 of Ultimate X Men.

But the king of kings for um... 'bringing the funny' is Ultimate Spider Man. I'd recommend... Volume 7, guesting the X Men... Um... Volume 2, with the Kingpin. Pretty much every volume has comedy gold in it though.

Enjoy!

Up to about issue 70 of UXM
All of USM
Ultimates 1&2
UFF 1-30(pretty much nothing beyond the zombie fantastic four and namor are worth really looking into)
Ultimate Human(current, worth noting)

Keep away from Ultimates 3 and Ultimate Power, you're just asking for sorrow there. Jeph Loeb Loebotomized everything he does.

Ultimate spiderman is one of the greatest books out there. Ultimate FF was fantastic for a long time, anything that greg land drew during FF was amazing. X-men was great until Kirkman totally screwed things up ( I love invincible, I'm no hater) but I think it has some real potential. Don't forget to check out ultimate iron man vol. 1. Ultimates vol 1-2 is truley a masterpiece. If you want something that most people don't know about you should check out ultimate adventure, it's like the ultimate version of batman and robin and i loved it. Another can't miss would be the "ultimate six" wich is basically the ultimate sinister six's attempt to take over the country. They battle spiderman and the ultimates and you get to see how powerfull spiderman really is compared to the ultimates, there is a great scene where parker goes toe to toe with rogers and you see captain america start to falter.

Wow, alot of people hating on Careys run on UFF. I personally recommend it, especially the Silver Surfer arc that has some incredible art. The God War arc is really a preference of taste. If you really like the Ultimate Galactus Saga then maybe you should try it out. Also try to keep an open mind when reading any of the Ultimate Universe.

I have a question I'd like to pose to all of you: Would you prefer original/new stories, revisions/re-imaginings of 616 stories or a mixture of both? I get the vibe that most people just want a rehash of 616 stuff lately. I want bold, new ideas to be expressed in the Ultimate Universe.

I would like some things to be reimagined that set the Ultimate Universe far apart from 616 and I'd like to see some original ideas too. I think that the UU needs to depart from looking like the 616 right now. Supposedly that's what Ultimatum is supposed to do; I just would like to see Ultimatum be done with respect to what has transpired within the Ultimate Universe and set a firm foundation for solid stories to be told in the future.

On a side note, I know most of you have heard that within Ultimatum, something is supposed happen with Magneto and Reed Richards. When I heard this, I don't know why I saw them switching bodies permanently due to some accident or phenomena. That would be interesting to me though, Magneto wouldn't be a mutant anymore (more a mutate) and Reed would be one of the most powerful mutants on Earth. How would they deal with each other's lives?

Yeah, hopefully Ultimatum will shake things up again. Loeb's bizarre hankering for turning Ultimates into their 616 counterparts might be some sort of... artistic red herring to prepare for some big changes.

Personally, I want Peter Parker: Head of SHIELD

Now that's a shake up. Wow, I'm going to start a new thread about this. (Skips off. Trips over. Goes for a drink. Starts thread.)
