View Full Version : The most recent DC megaevent to focus on 4th World was...GENESIS?

FINAL CRISIS is evidently going to center around the Fourth World, and Darkseid's role will be highly important, if not central.
DC mega events have come and gone through the years, but the last one to focus on the Fourth World and feature Darkseid as its main villain was...1997's GENESIS?
GENESIS is (rightfully) reviled by most as the worst mega event miniseries DC has ever put out.
That gives slight cause to worry. We're hoping that FINAL CRISIS will be in the tradition of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, but could the heavy Fourth World involvement make it more similar to GENESIS?
I sure hope not.

Genesis was by John Byrne.
Final Crisis is by Grant Morrison.
There are other factors at play here.

I don't think Genesis was bad because it had heavy 4th World influence, I think Genesis was bad because it suffered from poor plotting and poor characterization and was utterly nonsensical.
What about Cosmic Odyssey?

What about Cosmic Odyssey?
If only for the Mike Mignola art and lack of crossovers with other books, I really dug Cosmic Odyssey.
And, I agree, the fundamental difference between Genesis and Final Crisis has very little to do with the Fourth World and everything to do with John Byrne and Grant Morrison.
Whereas Morrison's brain is still hardwired into whatever Cosmic Cube Kirby's brain was born into, Byrne lost his way a couple decades ago.

Don't forget Legends (one of my favorite events) by John Ostrander and Byrne was Darkseid-dominant.

Morrison has already said that it's not going to be like COIE, so I wouldn't worry about that.
And so far it seems like it's touching on a bunch of stories in DC's past, mostly Armegeddon/Zero Hour, so I can't see it just being about that one storyline.

I hope not. Not even Grant Morrison can make Armageddon and Zero Hour come even remotely close to being good.

What about Cosmic Odyssey?
Not really a major DCU crossover event, just a miniseries (with DCU characters featured) that helped launch a New Gods series.

I'd have to agree with you there.

Ah but armageddon strong points aren't exactly the main storyline but the annuals set in the future which were mostly good. As a bunch of what-ifs , some of the annuals were a great read.
The rest of the armageddon minis are mostly captain atom based except for inferno and that one had a lot of potential but it was too compressed. I would have loved to see some of the different teams fighting expanded.
e.g A unique team of Starfire , Guy Gardner , Lobo , Orion & enemy ace in the same battle as drawn by Walt Simonsen. The battle should have been expanded as should be the rest of the battles from the other teams with art by Art adams & Tom Mandrake.

Likewise , Zero hour strongest point were in the weekly comics crossover , they had those alternate reality leaking into the main reality and it was fun - batman got to see his parents in a reality where he died instead of his parents , another batgirl that never suffered the same fate as barbara , superman meeting batman incarnations of the ages and of course , THE one effect of zero hour that still lingers strongly in DC today - lady blackhawk who got stranded in the present during zero hour but who's active in the birds of prey now.

GENESIS is (rightfully) reviled by most as the worst mega event miniseries DC has ever put out.
Buried Alien (The Fastest Post Alive!)
Worse than Millennium?
Think carefully about your answer.

MILLENIUM was tepid, and AMAZON ATTACKS was boring, but neither of them left me depressed like GENESIS did. To date, it's the only comics event that actually left me depressed for having read it. The others merely disappointed and bored me; GENESIS actually depressed me.

I dunno. At least back when GENESIS went down, then was a clear continuity. This was just a pretty bad story that tied into everything.
AMAZONS ATTACK was the product of a DCU which is just trying to do a LOT of stuff and there doesn't seem to be much evenness to it all. So its awfulness seemed a LOT worse.
Therefore, IMHO, GENESIS > AMAZONS ATTACK.
And really, AMAZONS ATTACK was a TERRIBLE story. Good lord, it was horrible. If you read that and thought GENESIS was worse........wow. I pray for you. :p

I actually re-read genesis last year. I still have a hard time making out what it was about (yes I know... source wall, genesis wave... blah blah blah). It just never mattered. of course, niether did Millenium or The Weird. ;)
Edit* Ok, at least in millenium we learn Wally's dad was a manhunter. STUPID.. HORRIBLE plot device but it is part of cannon. So there ya go. Nothing matters from Genesis.

The only saving grace to Genesis were the gorgeous Alan Davis covers!

I'd been a fan of Ron Wagner since GI JOE, so seeing his artwork in a major DCU event was a plus.

And i've never been a fan , not since his stint at Marvel drawing Morbius. He and another Ron , Ron Garney draws in similiar manner and i have never really liked both of their art. Big splash pages galore but really lack of content.
