which one would you rather see win an oscar... and why?
I guess I'd vote for "Persepolis" because Pixar has already won an oscar for best animated film with "the Incredibles", "Finding Nemo"--and this doesn't even include some of the other awards they've gotten for other Oscar nominations and awards.
I liked both of these movies a lot-- and it's actually difficult for me to pick out which one I think is the 'better' filim... so my reasoning behind picking one over the other is more about encouraging people to see the more obscure movie to give it more exposure. it's not about one film being intrinsically better than the other...
anybody else have thoughts on this matter?

Hard to say, since I went into both movies so differently. With "Persepolis" I had already read and loved the book, so while the movie was great, it still seemed like a lesser version of a story I already liked. With "Ratatouille" I didn't really know what to expect, but it won me over with a nice story and gorgeous, lush animation.
So "Ratatouille" was the better experience for me. Was it the better movie? I don't know.

I can't make a decision between the two films. The only thing I'm sure about is Surf's Up doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell, and I would rather Surf's Up had been replaced by Paprika (if possible). One of those Oscar nominated films is in a different and lower class of film-making.

In my opinion Ratatouille is lesser flawed than Persepolis, but the heart was apparent in both films. At this point I like them equally. Could change, but for now it's all even mainly because they are as dynamically opposite as can be.
I don't care which one wins. Don't care about Oscars.

Two brilliant films. The audience of these two films are the real winners!

Me neither, really, but I do hope the recognition gets a lot more people to check out the "Persepolis" graphic novel(s).

This is gonna sound stupid...but I liked Surf's Up better than the other two. It was kind of...I don't know, different in a weird sort of kids way.
I felt Ratatouille was the same old same old, and when the creator of Persepolis was in the city recently, I had a chance to catch one of her chats, and seeing this in person really turned me off to her and her creation (I know that sounds really petty, so sue me.) Otherwise, there has been better animated movies in the history of the cinema. There will be better in the future.

Oh well, the nomination was probably a good enough boost for Persepolis.

Your first five words are gold! :)
Ratatouille was brilliant in the food critics' big monolog. And the beauty of taste.
I wondered what kind of adult she grew into. She certainly made critical mistakes in her young adulthood. And she smokes (a personal turn off).
I really thought this was a very good year for animated films. I also thought Paprika should have been nominated, perhaps over Surf's Up.

I know I was able to see it in theater yesterday only because of the nod and critical acclaim.

I know, I'm stupid, but Ratatouille was just the same old, "see kids different is cool" sort of hokum that all kids movies are about. That is well and good, but it was nothing that hasn't been done better.
Surf's Up was, I don't know, the same I guess, but different enough that I enjoyed it. And my girls liked it better than Ratatouille, so there.:)
As for Persepolis, one of my brother in laws works at a movie theatre, so I get to go a lot for free when the girls are asleep, or the such, and I watched the movie, and read the source, and was intrigued. Then the creator was in the city on a day off, so got a chance to hear a chat she had. Let's just say the smoker part is the least of her uncharming qualities. Just for me. I could see were non stop pimping of one's product could make for a few off days.

I found Ratatouille's commentary on art and art criticism decidedly adult. So I completely disagree that it's more of the same-old kid stuff we've been seeing. I hate fucking computer animated films but this one won me over with its respect for art (and it was also cool that it didn't make a pun every other scene).
