Just got the first Jack of Fables trade from my local library. I'm not finished with it yet, but so far its really interesting. I like how warped the fables are, Jack seems like an interesting character, and his situation is interesting.

I've never read this or the regular Fables before. In fact, I've found Fables interesting before, but its just one of things where I was tempted to read it, yet I didn't. Then I saw Jack of Fables in the library and knew I had to try it. Glad I did!

So I'm not finished with this yet, but I am interested in thoughts about this series. What do you guys think of it? Also: should I go look for Fables next? It doesn't look like my library has any of the trades, so I'll prob have to buy a Fable trade eventually if I want to read it...

" Also needs to read Bone and Sin City, which are also at the library, but this is definitly the wrong thread to discuss that, so nevermind! lol."

You really REALLY should read Fables first. It kind of sets up the ground work of Jack of Fables.

I'm not as sure about that, Adventurer. Reading Fables would help, but I don't think it's necessary.

DF2506, you could ask your library to get the Fables books via inter-library loan.
I love Jack of Fables and Fables to pieces and you can read both series independently. Your reading experience will be enriched if you read both and both series can give away little bits of stuff (JoF gives more away about Fables so far....)

I don't think it's necessary, either. I've only read a handful of FABLES, and have no problem with JACK. As a matter of fact, I prefer it to the parent title.

Ya, I've only seen preview pages of Fables and I have no problem with Jack of Fables either. Although I am interested in Fables and I'll prob try to do what snarkbunny suggests & get Fables via inter-library loan if I can. If not, I'll pick up the first trade sooner or later.

Almost done with Jack of Fables. The escape part is especially cool!

Looking forward to reading the rest!

Sorry for the double post..

I finished Jack of Fables last night and I really liked it. Poor Humpty Dumpty. lol. And whatever happened to Sam??? What was the butter thing about? I think I'm missing something there..

Jack does come off as a bit of a jerk here and there. But otherwise a neat character and a good protangist (sp?) for the book.

My favorite issues were the Escape issues. Very cool.

I'm definitly thinking about getting my library to get a couple of the Fables books if it can...

I really think the only reason you would NEED to read up to a certain part of Fables before moving into Jack is if you already started reading Fables and don't want spoilers, the series is quite good at standing on it's own and explaining everything you need to know to understand the book and enjoy. The essential part of any spin off imo.

Oh, it's not giving anything away to say that Jack is DEFINITELY a jerk...
Jack of Hearts is the next trade for Jack of Fables :)

As for Sam - in Spoilers

Sam is Little Black Sambo, an old story that has become in disfavour due to the fact that Sambo is a racial slur and that many versions of the story are quite racist. In the tale, the tigers turn into butter.

The original tale from 1899 can be read here: Original Story (http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1330)

I also started reading Jack of Fables before Fables, and had no trouble at all. Now I love them both though. Even if you decide to skip Fables, or postpone it for a while, there are some great Jack stories you should read from before he got spun-off. The Civil War story from Vol.3 Storybook Love, and the two-part Jack story from Homelands (leads right into JoF#1 telling the story of Jack in Hollywood), are great and could be seen as prequels to JoF.
