When a fan mentioned that they loved Countdown to Mystery, DiDio said that Adam Beechen is writing from Steve Gerber's plot that was dictated from his hospital bed for #7. For issue #8, Gail Simone, Mark Waid, Mark Evanier and Adam Beechen will each write their own four page endings to the story as they thought Gerber – who passed away last week – would have written.
How perfect is that?

I mean, yay! Gail writing on Gerber's behalf? Fuckin' awesome! But it sucks that he hadn't gotten through the last script on the last thing he was writing. I've been lovin' his Dr. Fate stories. They're classic kind of surreal magic-metaphysic mind-trip stuff. Totally his bag. It's a shame he never got to finish it, but it looks like he's got a great group of writers ready to write on his behalf.

I was hoping that Gerber was closer to finishing the story, but this does sound like a best effort to finish it as close as possible to how he'd have intended. I know Gail was a big fan, so it's good to hear she's involved.
I know Mark Evanier was a friend of his and I gather from this message board that he liked Gail Simone's writing and had corresponded with her. How about Mark Waid and Adam Beecher - was there a connection of some kind there as well? I'm not very familiar with either guy's work.

Gail and Mark E. make sense. Too bad they didn't ask Steven Grant, or indeed De Matteis.

Mark Waid, however, recently said that Gerber was one of his biggest influences.

Very nice idea indeed.
