Take a peek at the preview pages!

Say what you will about Countdown, like it or dislike it, but if they bring back Ray in costume..... well, I'll be VERY happy then! :)

I went back to my shop this week because he was shorted a box of Marvel books, but when I heard Scott did the art for Countdown this week, I wanted to at least look at it (for the first time in months). Nice lookin' stuff. I'm so glad he's back at DC and I can't wait to see his and Geoff's next big Flash project.

But holy lord, is Countdown still awful. There's a myriad number of ways Ray could've come back as The Atom that didn't involve a crappy mega-event book. One point, though: Brother Eye + Apokalips = Solaris? Drawn by Scott Kollins? Several kinds of awesome.

Well, if Ray even survives this craptastic crapstravaganza, then I'd love to see him mentoring Ryan in Atom.

ALL RIGHT! Our Solaris is FINALLY appearing in her own DC comic!

I wonder what she'll be wearing THIS time!

Absolutely nothing. :o She's on fire, though, but I don't know if that's a fashion theme or what...

But the Justice League created Solaris back in DC1M, I thought...

Wasn't his origin that he manipulated the JLA and Justice Legion A into creating him?

I dunno... Seems kinda like most folks at DC really don't get Morrison or they have ADD and very selective memory when they read his stories.

Yes, Solaris already has an origin by Morrison. I'm guessing either nobody knew, cared, or all of Countdown is gonna amount to a "Dallas" ending with Tom Stillwell getting up from a bad dream and walking in on D Didi in the shower. :p

I thought that was St.Elsewhere  Oh wait, you said shower. Or maybe that's your fantasy?

Man, I have too much useless pop culture knowledge in my head. :o

As for the Atom, I like Ryan Choi. He was one of the few well written Asian American characters that did not adhere to all of the stereotypes, with the exception of being hella smart of course. (cos we are! =p)

It's sad that it took the whole Crisis thing to give him his own book. Not to mention the backlash against him was stomach churning. It's one thing to not like a character, but to go after his race is fucked up and symptomatic of a mongoloid. And yes, I do say this as an Asian American.

I don't think the way that Asians have been portrayed is the result of racism. It has more to do with ignorance. If Ray Palmer comes back, great. But I just hope they keep Ryan Choi around. Or produce characters of his calibur.

I was reading the wiki on Raymond Palmer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Palmer), the sf magazine editor the Atom was based on....so they created a character who can size change and took his name from a fellow whose spine was damaged as a result of a childhood accident and was unable to grow?

Classy stuff.

D Didi in my shower? Unless he's on the floor crying, trying to scrub all the filth off of him after I expressed my distaste for his stint at DC with a long night of passionate hate... it ain't my fantasy. ;)

I haven't seen too many Asian characters written horribly stereotypical. Not since the Seventies, at least. :p But c'mon, who doesn't love some ridiculous Shang-Chi action? But I especially like Ryan because, yeah, he's an Asian superhero, but that isn't what makes him the character he is. He'd be the exact same fun, cool character if he were black or white or Latino. Same with Jaime, the new Blue Beetle. And Jason, the new Firestorm. These kids were all ethnic, but that didn't matter much to their characters because they weren't written as "the new black Firestorm" or "the all-new Asian Atom," they were simply written as brand-new, inviting characters taking on old mantles, and doing it considerably well.

So yeah, if Ray comes back, awesome, but I hope he doesn't take over The All-New Atom, because that book isn't his, and the people reading it aren't reading it because they like Ryan's costume, they like Ryan and probably wouldn't appreciate seeing it on somebody else after a couple awesome years of great stories.

Hmmm, didn't think he was an asian american.

Well, he's probably a legalized citizen if he's teaching in America now.

Ryan is technically not a naturalized citizen, but he lives in the US. He's technically and ex-pat so you're right about that.

I just assumed he was American due to the fact that his main residence is Ivy Town.

But as for your second point, I guess it's a matter of perspective. It's true that the writers on the book would have written him well, regardless of race.

And yes, comic books have characters regardless of race, performing martial arts feats. And I do find Lady Shiva intriguing. But, to deny that Asians are still not being stereotyped is to not expatiate in any reality that I know of.

Look at the first season of Lost. Sun was submissive, while Jin, shocker, knew martial arts and was an emotional fuck wit.

The show has let the characters evolve, but still, it continued a precedence that has plagued us since we first came into contact wit the west.

It's getting better man, but it still bothers me.

And maybe someday Ryan will become a naturalized citizen so I can call him "Asian American". :p

I have several japanese people who work in my office. They work in the US and are living in the US, but they are still Japanese citizens. I was assuming Ryan Choi was the same.

I don't think it's as bad as it was back in the old chop-sockey days. And while the older Asian characters are still being used pretty... I guess stereotypically, the newer characters aren't being written so bluntly or poorly. Remember Striker Z from Power Company? (Probably not, but... :p)

You do have a point there. It's getting better, and sometimes, characters are just poorly written, regardless of race.

And I should have clarified the "to deny that Asians are being stereotyped is not to expatiate in reality" comment.

I'm not saying you were, it's just some people that I've read online actually have. The words were more cautionary than accusatory.

And besides, no matter what reality you dwell, in, I still think you're one of the coolest people here. :)
