I was thinking of getting into the authority, but do you think I should start with Stormwatch instead.

Starting with Stormwatch gives you some background to the organization and the characters.
And, frankly, they're better stories.
Well, assuming you mean starting with the Ellis run.

Damn. I read The Authority. Still need to find and read Stormwatch. I've heard friends rave about them. I just happened to nab Authority first for some reason.

Damn right. The only reason not to start with Stormwatch is that The Authority might be a bit disappointing in comparison.

Definitely read Stormwatch first. I'd suggest even reading the pre-Ellis issues, if you can find them.

I'd suggest starting with Stormwatch then go to Authority, I started with the Authority and then back tracked Ellis stormwatch, either way you can go wrong

All of Ellis' Stormwatch issues are collected in Trades. Read those. At the very Then go to the Authority.
You won't be disappointed.

yeah, I agree.You won't be disappointed.
oddly, while I was interested in Stormwatch, I didn't really like the Authority books all that much.

A little late to respond to this but STORMWATCH first. I actually am going through this process right now. Pulled out all 51 issues of volume one and I am reading them straight through. This title was highly underrated at times.
Bring back Stormwatch PHD - CHRISTOS are you listeinng?

I loved Ellis's Stormwatch and I thought his run on The Authority paled by comparison. Mark Millar's run on The Authority was a big improvement though.

I started with Authority and have not yet read Stormwatch. I really enjoyed the Authority trades and didn't feel like I was missing big chunks of the story. My point being that even if you don't start with Stormwatch, you shouldn't be left floundering and wondering what is going on.
I don't talk Wildstorm much so didn't really know Stormwatch was so highly regarded. Looks like I'll have to start in on those trades sometime soon.

In my opinion, Stormwatch has consistently been one of the better, solid titles around; from its Image days all the way to Stormwatch:PHD.
Authority, great with Ellis and Hitch; good with Millar and Quitely; that's about it. Tony Bedard had a good filler.

I think I have all the Stromwatch trades in my amazon wish list... anyone help me out?
StormWatch: Force of Nature (is this volume 1?)
StormWatch Vol. 2: Lighting Strikes
StormWatch Vol. 3: Change or Die
StormWatch Vol. 4: A Finer World
StormWatch Vol. 5: Final Orbit
Is that all? That's all I could find.

I'm more of an issues man:
Stormwatch, Vol. I #37-50
Stormwatch, Vol. II #1-12?
get them first, it completely sets up the later stories/characters for Authority.

Yeah, that's all of them. Final Orbit will be no easy task though. It's out of print, and goes for quite a bit of coin on eBay. I never did get my hands on one.

Fianl Orbit is an mazingly disappointing story. It is a silly crossover that somehow made cannon. You would think that stormwatch goes out valiantly against some cosmic level threat and that some of the died to give others more time to escape, or protecting a downed team member, or some kind of grandiose sacrifice in general. It wasn't the case. They were killed simply to kill them and move STORMWATCH Black into The Authority. I read that issue and just felt underwhelmed. Aliens, Wild C.A.T.S and senseless death........If you come across it for cover price, buy it, but don't go pay more than that.

I originally read it via interlibrary loan at the library. Especially if you're trying out a series, that's a good way to go.

I'm inclined to agree. As good a penciller as Chris Sprouse is, he's completely unsuited to an Aliens story and the whole trade is easily the weakest of Ellis's Stormwatch trades.
