View Full Version : CBR Artists United: The X-Men Street Clothes Project!
Hi-Fi
02-16-2008, 12:24 PM
You know when the characters are using the same civilian clothes in the cartoons over and over, just like Fred Flintstone does? We can see that in old TV shows like Spider-Man, Batman The Animated Series, X-Men and X-Men Evolution. Each character has his iconic and classic street look.
That’s our goal here. I invite the CBR fashionists (is that even a word?) to design and draw streets clothes to this first batch of mutants. Casual clothes. Every day clothes.
You can do how many characters you want to. And no one has dibs on any of the characters. If someone has posted a Storm design, for example, you can still post yours.

Here is just a quick design.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k303/cpsm1092/scan0042.jpg
A longer sweater, with alternating stripes of Dark Umber & Creme colors. As you can see, even though it is long, it doesn't engulf her body. It also sets off her hair very well, in my opinion. With tight Dark Umber pants to match. With ballet shoes, to tie it together. It is very casual, something that could be worn at home, or as "street clothes".

Bobby's sense of style has been all over the place since he first appeared. We saw him with hawaian shirts and these days he's wearing a more alternative style (he's jacket comes to mind).
This was my first design for him. I wanted something cool, and more of his age (mid-late twenties).
http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/586/bobbydrakewa6.jpg
Then I realized that the colors don't scream Iceman at all. He needs some blue. So I changed it to the blue jeans and stripped blouse.

Anyways here is Kitty Pryde.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k303/cpsm1092/scan0043.jpg
I have been a fan of Kitty since I first saw her. Even as a young girl, she dressed very sophisticated for her age, which is what I tried to imply with this dress. I originally was going to make her a jacket, but let's face it, Jackets & Dresses can easily come off as tacky. Anyways, I alluded to the jacket, with the large collar/liner. I put the cuff of the sleeve, higher, just makes it look classy. The dramatic red really sets off the black, without making it look like a fire truck. Even though it is meant to be sophisticated, I added the plaid to make it fun, something that could be worn to multiple places, easily.

I'm sorry, but I can't just see Alison walking down the street in a pair of jeans. She must be glamorous at all time! And what's more glamorous, than sparkles? Correct Answer, nothing. I designed a little cocktail dress, that can once again can be worn to a multitude of places, but preferably at night (she could blind someone during the day :( ). Another thing about Dazzler is, she is very "vintage", so I gave the dress a very mod feel, with the plunging neckline, and then loose-fitted. and the necklace was there just to tie it all together.

Here's another outfit for Storm I'm working on. I'm currently working on two different versions, and plan on creating more alternate versions later. Anyways these two versions only differ slightly. One is with panty hose, one is without. These are only in the beginning stages, and only have their base colors added. Enjoy...

Hmmm... that's way too fancy! I wanna see you drawing a more street level Dazzler. I think she can totally rock a pair of jeans!
Here's my Rogue
That's great, lockerogue. The colors and style are totally Rogue! She still looks sexy and feminine but totally badass. Nice work.
Ah, so here's the blond Ice Queen, Emma Frost: As per usual...walking on razor's edge between classy and debauchery.
That outfit is just like her!

That's absolutely GORGEOUS, Shade. You're a big Ororo fan, aren't you. I can tell because the two set of clothes you created scream Storm. They're completely in character. I'd love to see you having a crack on Rogue, Jean and the others.

Here's my try at Jubilee. I tried to keep most of her usual color scheme and keep her clothes almost obnoxiously bright and fun.
Also, the "Sparkle" on her shirt is supposed to be all glittery, but it's hard to see.

Yes, a piercing store near me sells/sold light up belly rings, otherwise I wouldn't have known, either. I'm glad you liked the rhinestones. I figured Jubilee's one of the few characters who would like sparklies as much as Dazzler.

Tadaaaa!! Here is the finished product of Storm' streetwear. It could probably function as something she could wear being a queen and all, but she could also wear it as civilian clothing too. I figured I'd give a little synopsis about it, and give some details and insight as to why I chose this look for her.
Firstly, my favorite color of all time is red. And since we barely see Ororo rocking anything red, I wanted to add a vibrant and dominating eye catching red color to really make her pop! I haven't decided what kind of material it could be made out of, but I've had ideas. Maybe satin, Egyptian cotton, or silk would be a nice and "breathable" fabric for a dress such as that.
I liked the stocking version better than the one without, because I just liked how it balanced everything out. Plus I didn't want anyone getting the idea that Ororo had nothing on underneath there, lol.
I wanted a bunch of gold trinkets and jewelry for her to wear. I figured it could be African gold jewelry that she either inherited or had as a sentimental gift she aquired from her mother. Her belt consists of mahogany wood beads, jade beads and trinkets, silver amulets and runes, and gold accents here and there.
I chose a braided ponytail just for the simple fact that I didn't want her hair flying all over the place, because then the hair and dress would fight for attention. And I already had the dress flying every which way, so I decided a braid would do.
I gave her a peep toe pump ( I think that's what it's called :D) with red and black leather. I made the back of the heel and the sole of the shoe red, while everything else was black. I thought it looked pretty nice, lol.
Anyways, the red mouth pretty much set it off, and wrapped it all together. Enjoy!

Sorry, MarvelGirlBoy. Let's keep the designs restricted to the characters selected for this first batch. The reason I didn't include Layla is because she already has a pretty iconic outfit. Ok here's Rogue! I'll also do a synopsis on her as well!
I chose a classic look for Rogue which I thought was the typical cowboy/girl look. At first I had a great amount of difficulty deciding on what she should wear, seeing as though Rogue is the flirty tom-boyish type, that is at times feminine. So I went for the cowgirl look, and I was originally going to put her in a skirt, but decided not to. To add the femininity I put her in tight fitting pants with a hint of cleavage to "tease" onlookers. I basically kept her all covered up except for a little bit of the forearms and the neck and chest area.
To add my own flair and personal style I added a little "urbanesque" look to it. I coordinated the entire outfit to have matching and coordinating colors to draw everything together and add a sense of balance. I then added little embroidered designs on the pants and boots to create a more "busy" and not so plain look. If you look closely there's little embroidered flowers on her boots to further add to the femininity. Everything else was basically cake. Hope you guys like!

I'm kinda over the hat, so I didn't include it. Finally, I thought that, for some reason, Logan would look very good wearing converse (I swear it's not a sickness, Pryde!!)
Hope you guys like it:

Finally, here's my Rogue.
Now this was VERY hard for me to create, because Rogue is my favorite character and I wanted to make something that was totally her style. I added a lot of layers to her upperbody: black and green shirt with long sleeves, green top and a dark blue coat with hood. Because it HAS to have a hood in my mind. It gives her a bit of an edge and that bad girl vibe we love.
I also tried to mix her favorite colors. Therefore, I used black, green and brown. The blue was really to add more style to my girl.
But we can't forget that Rogue is a SEXY girl, and I wanted to showcase her femininity, so I opted to show a little of her legs with the high boots and shorts.

Sorry, MarvelGirlBoy. Let's keep the designs restricted to the characters selected for this first batch. The reason I didn't include Layla is because she already has a pretty iconic outfit. And because I wanted to keep a few key characters out of this one to make the second batch more interesting. Don't worry. We'll eventually get to that. :)
By the way, Rachel IS on the list.
A'ight, fair dos. And I'm sorry, I'm totally blind! I was looking for "Marvel Girl" and I think my eyes just merged her with Da Costa. I hope someone gives her a kick-ass outfit soon!

OMGSH I LOOOOVE HOOODIES.
I don't think artists today really understand contemporary or street fashion. I saw Sook playing with it in X-Factor and Raimondi really plays with it a lot, but really I can't think of many instances (other than the superfab Skottie Young New X-Men or Alphona's Runaways) that really reflect REAL fashion.
I understand people want superhero costumes in their superhero comics, but I want to just run Psylocke's costume through her megathighs.

Ok, here's my Anole. After I finished it, I realized I wasn't happy with it AT ALL. The colors are all wrong. Starting with the green I chose. Anole looks like Hulk's son or something. :o
Anyway, I thought the vest would be cute for Anole. Then I thought he needed a little edge, so I decided to put those holes in his jeans.

The only thing that hints that Emma might have dressed him is the plunging neck line. Other than that, he isn't in cheek-exposed chaps or wearing some ridiculous codpiece, so I think its safe to assume that Warren dressed him.
And Jean has great taste in clothes - she was a fashion model after all. Its not her fault that in the early 90's she was slightly "off" after having her telepathy turned back on - she was channelling Bobby's beard Opal. And we all know what kind of a fashion faux pas she was.

I did something very similar to this (except for a red color scheme) for the Play Along At Home thread but I feel like this is so much better.
I couldn't get the effect I wanted. I was checking out a Forever21 dress, and it was a silver lame type fabric that was just so GLOWY. It was gorgeous, I really wish i could have translated it into the art, maybe I just need to play with setting some more. I feel like such a ROOKIE with this art work! ASDF I need to step up my GAME. Here's my main man Nightcrawler! To me, in the comics, he never dressed in outfits that complimented his personality. Some of the things he's worn has been nice, but some of the things he has worn don't seem very comfortable for a guy like him. So I wanted to dress him in something comfortable to the extreme!!! So what better than to put him in a track suit? I wanted the track suit to be comfortable and "loose" so it could accomadate Nightcrawlers anatomy. Seeing as though he has a tail, I opted for a baggier fitting pant to allow freedom of movement. Also since he's always in some akward squatting position I wanted the track suit to further emphasize the comfort of the tracksuit. I left his chest bare with the jacket open also. But anyways enough talkin', take a look!

I actually did this project 8 years ago, when I used to work in a commercial storyboarding studio and there would be times during the day when I'd have nothing to do, so I would draw the X-Men in street clothes as I practiced in marker techniques and stuff. I'll do a new one, but I just wanted to show these off for anyone that hasn't seen 'em yet.

I created this look tp portray the 2 different styles that Emma likes to go for, slutty & class. The jacket demonstrates her rank in soceity, with a navy & creme color ( to homage her love of White). The hot pants are to show off skin and to make it more street wear appropiate. It makes it fancy & slutty at the same time :D
Which seems to be Emma's motto when it comes to clothes.
