View Full Version : Artists conservative presidential candidates can use

Huckabee just got bitched out by Boston for playing their music on the campaign trail. McCain has already been admonished by Mellencamp for playing his music. The bit with Ronald Reagan and Springsteen is legendary.

So the question is: what rock groups, preferably with either some level of uplifting lyrics, or at least a chorus that sounds uplifting if you ignore the fact that it's supposed to be somewhat ironic when you compare it to the other lyrics, can a conservative presidential candidate use without risking the wrath of the band?

I'm having trouble thinking of non-ironic responses. Merle Haggard would write a song for McCain maybe. There are some very christian country and bluegrass artists that would maybe meet halfway with McCain, but there's a liberal side to Nashville, and a very liberal side to Texas that's gotten vocaler since Steve Earle.

I know this post isn't that great at answering the question, but I figured I'll start slow.

No way would an old ex-con badboy like Haggard write for McCain.

You kidding? Merle "The Fighting Side Of Me" Haggard? Seems like McCain's exactly the kind of guy he'd like: an apparent maverick, but hardline patriotic at the core.

Well I grant you I don't see him writing for the Obama or Clinton either if that helps.

He already wrote a song for Hillary voluntarily, though I think he's since retracted. I'm not sure of the whole story.

But he's the conservative friend of half the folky country liberals out there.

There's always Nugent, but somehow, Cat Scratch Fever just doesn't seem very presidential.

I know that Dave Grohl was pissed that George W. Bush was using his song 'My Hero' at campaign rallys, so he joined up with John Kerry.

Yeah, somehow I can't imagine a song written about Kurt Cobain being used for Bush.

Well, they were both drug users, I guess...

In a way it's like Regan using "Born In the USA" because it sounded patriotic, but the song really isn't.

That's what I brought up in the opening post. Same with Neil Young's Rockin in the Free World.

Neil Young was actually a staunch Reagan supporter.

Let's see...there's Ted Nugent...Toby Kieth...

Yeah, I think that about covers it.
