The 90's channel on XM radio? Best thing ever.

Anyway, what music does everyone recall from the time? I'm partial to Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy".

Marcy Playground got their name from a Minneapolis playground where the lead singer used to get his ass kicked all the time as a kid. Sex and Candy is a good song, though.

Some of those are actually from the late 80s.

We're older than we like to think we are, Shellhead!

Sex & Candy is a tedious, overplayed piece of crap, though.

That would be "Banditos" by The Refreshments. "But I got the pistol so I get the pesos... yeah that seems fair."

I am partial to some stuff from the 90's, considering I spent a lot of my formative years in that decade.

R.E.M. had four good albums.
Love The Gin Blossoms.
Dinosaur Jr. had some good stuff.
Stone Temple Pilots had some good songs.
Bad Religion had some good songs.
Foo Fighters had a lot of good work.
I'm also partial to Live. "Throwing Copper" is a great album.
Matthew Sweet.
Smashing Pumpkins.
Toad the Wet Sprocket.

Just as a few.

That's the one. Boppy lil' song, that.

Matthew Sweet.

Gah! How could I forget 'Girlfriend', one of my favourite albums EVAR?!?!

Also, Jellyfish's Bellybutton. That one stayed in my car for months. Still one of my favourite albums (EVAR).

... that Pistols and Pesos song by whoever. Like Val said, that's the Refreshments. That whole album (Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy) is really good, but the one they followed it up with is garbage.

Not sure if anyone on this board has seen the movie Juno, but there's a great debate in that movie about '93 vs. '77 as being the best year in modern music. I love a lot of music that came out in '77, but I will always choose stuff from '93 first.

In my opinion, that's a mark agaisnt 1993.

Besides, "Twice Removed" wasn't released until 1994.

I would put the 5 years from '92 -'97 with the best 5 years spans in musical history.

In that time we had the rise of Britpop and Punk/Ska as well as all of the great power-pop stuff.

Gotta agree on this. It still gets serious airplay on the local "alternative rock" station here.

Hey, I have no love for the Crash Test Dummies, but Descartes_Lives may or may not like them. He likes Marcy Playground - which I don't care for all that much either - so I was just trying to understand his cryptic post.

It was a good thing by itself, I enjoy their first two albums. However, their stuff from then on hasn't been good, so it's bad for the band that their high point was in the early 90's. It all came crashing down when Brad Roberts, the long-haired, deep-voiced lead singer, decided to move to Harlem.

I was hoping it would pop up on eMusic, but they only have his album he released in Japan only (which is awesome) and one other album.

Any suggestions for which reacks to get?

I still had a free download left from Pepsi (I'm saving the caps, since I drink Diet Pepsi Max on a regular basis anyway) so I went and got one of the tracks - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. Very well done. I'll need to download more of this album.

I had three total free downloads and had already gotten the new R.E.M. single, Supernatural Superserious; and a Santana track that had Chad Kroger singing - my wife wanted that one.

The R.E.M. track is really good. It doesn't have any of the boring electronica that their past three albums have, so I'm hoping the whole album will be that way. I was actually surprised at the Santana track - it was pretty good, even with the Nickelback singer.

The R.E.M. track is really good.

It sounds okay and it's catchy enough. Stipe can still sing and musicianship is still there but it doesn't sound all that exciting. I really would like R.E.M. to make another good record someday though. This is just decent (sort of like a few of the recent U2 singles).

I guess after three albums of stuff I can't even put into my CD player, the new single seems like awesome work to me. In the context of their best work, yeah, it's pretty decent enough, but certainly not "Begin the Begin" or anything.

I might consider buying it. But I feel like they peaked. Sometimes it's best to move on. There's other bands I'm more excited these days (like The National who are opening up for R.E.M. this year).

Buried Alien

I usually need for a decade to have ended for a few years before I can really appreciate its music. I grew up during the 1980s, but disliked its pop music until a few years after the 80s ended. Similarly, I disliked 1990s music while the 90s were going on, but I've since discovered a fondness for some of it.
