my sister keeps bringing me these cheap pieces of shit head phones that lasts for about a few months. but then one of the speakers go out, then you have to jiggle it and tilt your head till the speaker works again.... i'm also not very fond of ear buds, those things are excruciatingly painful. not only that the sound quality is horrible. why do people like those things???????

but in any event what are some really good quality head phones?

I use Sennheiser PX200s (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Collapsible-High-Performance-Closed-Headphones/dp/B000089GN4/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1202963412&sr=8-1). Really good price for the quality, I've ended up convincing so many people I know to replace their iPod earpbuds and other cheap headphones for these. The sound quality is great, it has especially nice bass compared to other headphones in the price range. They're also closed ear headphones, so they're great to listen to when you're out, without having to turn them up really loud in order to hear. They also fold over, making them easy to carry around (if you're wearing baggy jeans or other pants with large pockets you can easily just but them in your pocket when you're done). Really great portable headphones.

I do use earbuds, but not the piece of shit ones that come with the iPod: my Bose TriPorts (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PJF7RM/ref=pd_cp_e_1?pf_rd_p=250314601&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000HWP6SC&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0QF5Q79TV2EMT9Y48GRX) set me back a bit, but they're worth it, with a sound quality that beats most speaker systems and extremely comfortable in-ear mounts. I'm hearing sonic details I've never heard before in songs I've known for years.

Of course they aren't the top of the line, sonically or price-wise. They're not noise-cancelling (which is okay; I like to be able to respond to my environment), but they're really easy to carry around and stand up to a lot of physical stress.

And -- this is important -- they can go really, really loud without distortion or quality loss.

I've had mine over a year. Love the comfort and sound with my iPod. Also have used them for running. They're a little sweaty but have really held up. They fold up and have survived being jammed in my pocket with my sweaty hand for a year.
Only $45--

One tip: pull your skull cap down over your ears for better sound.

You pretty much can't go wrong with Sennheiser. I own ther CX 300 canal phones http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-CX300B-CX-300-Black/dp/B000VXI9WC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1203692279&sr=1-1

and I really love 'em.

I use the Creative EP360s (http://www.amazon.com/Creative-EP-630-Headphones-ear-ear-bud/dp/B000LVIC58/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1203848432&sr=1-1). I've heard rumours that they're supposedly an OEM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_equipment_manufacturer) of the Sennheiser CX300s (ie, that they're manufactured by another company and then rebranded under the Creative and Sennheiser names). I can't comment on the sound or build quality, but they certainly look similar and they're available at almost half the price. The sound quality isn't spectacular, but the bass is good, they keep out external noise and they hold up pretty well.

I suspect that you might be more impressed with higher end earbuds. I never liked earbuds until I tried the In Ear variety.

If you want pretty damn good ones that won't set you back much dough, it's hard to go wrong with Sony.

Are they really? I got a pair of 'em for free a while back and I thought they sounded sub-par. I didn't try them out for that long, since they were my back-up pair, but I'd love to see if this is true.

I dunno... I can't really afford to spend more than oh say $50 max on a pair of headphones. I'm sure one man's "quality for your money" could easily be another man's "sub-par". My experiences say Sony's are good compared to others in that price range. Now I'm sure someone like Bose (for example) probably makes a thousand dollar pair that blows Sony out of the water and makes you crap rainbows outta your ears, but I'd never be able to afford 'em.

I have these:

http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er6i.aspx

the white ones. They're exceptional. If you don't like buds, these actually go in the ear canal, which sounds more painful, but they are small and more comfortable than ones that seem like they are trying to stretch your ear canal out. Oh, and they come with different sized rubber ear fitters for different sized ears, they're not one size fits all.

I would pick Creative over Sony any day. There was a point in which I'd be going through headphones by the month 'cause they kept breaking. Then I noticed that they were all Sony's. I used to have a pair of these:

two, actually. That's because the wire coatings were shit and kept breaking.

If you want quality, I'd recommend the Sennheiser HD-555 (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD555-HD-555-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B0001FTVDQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1204173074&sr=1-1). I have a pair and I LOVE them. Very comfortable and they sound fantastic.

Hm. I've had a Sony pair that cost me about $30 that I have had about 2 years now. They got a pretty thick cord on 'em actually. They are the older more traditional ear covering types though, I don't dig the little thin ear-bud stuff in any variety. Does Creative make anything like that in the $50 and under range? And is there sound quality noticeably better? If so...I may try those out on my next go round.

These are the only earbuds I've used that don't hurt. They are also great quality. Get them.

I thought that many many years. Then over the last maybe decade I think Phillips surpassed them. It's all about the bass.
