I am completely new to the mainstream X-Men (though I do collect ultimate, followed animated series and watched films) and was randomly looking at X-Men comics today, there were so many I was wondering whether someone could develope some sort of list of which take place in the marvel universe and which don't, I know that Ultimate is the ultimate universe (obiously, lol) and Rise of Apocalypse is seperate too but what about others like New X-Men and Astonishing X-Men?
Also, do solo's like Wolverine take place in the marvel universe?
Sorry if this is basic stuff, I'm just curious.

All of them except for Exiles take place in the Mainstream (616) Marvel Universe.
X-Men: First Class and the upcoming Wolverine: First Class are stories set in the past.
Yes, there's a great deal of books out there for the X-Men. But there's also a lot of X-Characters.

Of the current x-books, they all take place in the main universe with the exceptions of New Exiles and Ultimate X-men.
You may be wondering, "Then how could Wolverine be in everything?" The answer: Nobody knows.

Oh okay, that's not as confusing as I expected it to be, lol.

Well, the answer is more that... not every story takes place at the same time.
Which is still stretching it when it comes to Wolverine at times. ;)

Urgh, this is putting me off picking up any of them now =(. I brought #495 for my mate today and he let me read it, I did actually really like it but the whole concept of all these different books is a bit intimidating... I need, like, a whole website laying it all out with dates haha.

It's pretty easy to follow. One of the whole points of Messiah Complex was to streamline the X-Books and give each one a seperate purpose and reason for existance. You don't have to follow them all if you don't want to. Uncanny X-Men is the so-called flagship book. Off the top of my head...
Uncanny X-Men - Flagship Book
Astonishing X-Men - The "Blockbuster" (Self-Contained) X-Men Book.
X-Men: Legacy - The "Legacy" Book.
X-Force - Black Ops X-Men Book.
Young X-Men - The Teen X-Men Book.
X-Factor - The "Noir" X-Men Book.

My Dad was talking about getting the masterworks (he followed it when he was younger) so I'll just steal them ^_^
I got X-Men First Class Vol 1 (TPB) as a gift and thought it was amazing, I'm waiting for the TPB for vol 2 though as I've missed 7 issues already :P

X-Men: First Class is one of the best books on the market at the moment. :)

Just try the New X-men Omnibus and wait for the Astonishing X-men Omnibus which is probably coming up, to read as a kind of sequel. That'll keep things fairly simple and linear while you digest how everything fits in together.
