View Full Version : X-Factor #28 Review and Spoilers
Siryn is in confession. She starts with the small stuff working up to from bad words to "oh and I'm knocked up."
Rahne has just told Madrox she's leaving. Madrox Prime is furious, the dupes he creates by slamming his fist on the table vary in reaction from being sympathetic to "what's here to eat?" After he calls her a hypocrite Rahne reacts in furry rage and then tells him the vision of murder she's seen. When Madrox points out Layla is gone Rahne simply says that she sees that Layla will return and Rahne can't be here when that happens. Madrox wants to simply hate Rahne but he understands, plus she's giving him hope for getting Layla back somehow.
Rictor is wandering the streets looking for trouble. He finds it when he chases after a girl he thinks is Layla who turns out just to be an underage prostitute. Her pimps and others unhappy with current events in Mutant Town rough Jamie up until Guido arrives to throw them out, literally.
Monet reacts to Rahne's plans to leave with the usual Monet snark. She doesn't believe Layla is coming back.
Guido drops Rictor off at the hospital and goes outside only to find Madrox storming past him on his way to beat down some Purifiers that he's gotten wind of. Madrox walks into the meeting and promptly shoots the leader (don't worry, it's only a tranq) and then expounds how he's lost his hope because X-Factor lost their little girl that knew stuff. Purifier reinforcements arrive to Madrox's relief because he thought it was going to be too easy. While he's kicking ass we find out where his new tattoo went - nowhere. He's been covering it with makeup.
Monet and Theresa are having a heart-to-heart in a bar. Yes, it appears Theresa is sticking with bottled water so calm down. Monet immediately assumes Theresa will have an abortion, to which Theresa reacts in horror. The baby is a life, and every last one of their kind is important now. Theresa also finds out for the first time that Rahne is leaving.
Rictor is back home talking to Madrox who is eating ice cream straight from the carton. He explains to Madrox that the town dynamics are breaking apart and splitting into two factions of ex-mutants, those that can pass as normal and those that can't due to remaining physical attributes such as horns, etc. Theres a lot of resentment and also some new contractor who has popped up that Rictor doesn't know anything about. The rest of the team is to preoccupied to listen to Rictor and neither is this particular Madrox, who turns out to be "stuff my face" dupe and heads out to the nearest pizza joint.
Rictor heads upstairs to talk to the one person who's always on the same wavelength as he, Rahne, but all that's left in her room is a letter with his name on it. Poor poor Rictor.
So, at the end of the issue we are left with one big question.
Who or what the hell is Saxon and why should we vote for this entity?
Review: I enjoyed this issue but I sure felt bad for everyone involved (well, except the Purifiers, naturally. The big theme that seems to reoccur throughout is how the absence of Layla has really shattered the core of the team. Even though they didn't particularly want or trust her at first she became their grounding member who they depended upon for faith and hope that things would turn out right. Right now all the members with perhaps the exception of Guido seem to have no idea what to do next.
Oh, and Guido says the things that Rockslide would if he only had a brain! :D
Who or what the hell is Saxon and why should we vote for this entity?
The answer to that question might be that PAD is a big doctor Who fan. In last season's Doctor Who the name Saxon was seen everywhere and eventually Saxon turned out to be the doctor's main opponent who grabbed the position of prime minister.

Dr Who fans rock!
I'm assuming that the contractor that Rictor refers to is Saxon.

If Rictor didn't kill himself before, he just might now :(
Glutton Jamie sounds hilarious. As for the pregnancy, poor Si. Madrox better do right by her.

Is this the issue where Mutant Town's population is supposed to be 'haemorrhaging'? =/

Yes. As Rictor is explaining to hungry dupe, the "pans" who pass as normal now are leaving and the "rems" who are the ones with visual remnants of their former mutancy are resentful.

Hooray for the consistency on the "M" tattoo. Seeing the preview had me scratching my head, and hoping it was an art error.
And Madrox kicking Purifier *ss is something I'm looking forward to. Jamie got more than he gave through Messiah CompleX.
Guido the sheriff. PAD, if you use any Blazing Saddles sheriff jokes, replacing black with mutant, you'll win bonus points.
How much you want to bet either Saxon hires Arcade, or Saxon IS Arcade?

I would have to dissagree with you on this one.
I hate the idea of the tattoo, it makes no sense whatsoever that Madrox should have it on him when a dupe got it.
It would be like if in the Multiple Choice mini when his dupe got stabbed and was dying Jamie would absorb the dupe and also end up with a knife wound/scar on his chest. Or when the monk-dupe came in and he absorbed it, his hair wasn't gone.
So I guess this means that from now on all of his dupes will have the "M" too?
I dunno, I just don't like it personaly. Just keep him in makeup so it can eventualy be forgotten.
But back on track,
Issue sounds great! I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow, and I can't believe I spoiled it for myself, oh well.
Don't know whats going to happen with Sy's baby, but if I had to guess, I'd say a misscarrage will occur probably from all her yelling and the strain it would put on a child. Plus I find it hard to read a book when young characters NEVER age, ex: Franklin Richards. So unless Cable comes back to steal her kid as well and it ages 17 years in 6 issues and has dupe and sonic powers, I dunno if I'd want to read a book where the baby never grows up.

Let me rephrase that... my opinion of the "M" tattoo is somewhat neutral. However, I would have been disappointed if it appeared, and then disappeared without ever gaining any explanation. So Hooray for continuity but "hmm... I dunno." for the tattoo.

It must be not forgotten that Madrox is not a mutant but some sort of... changeling? and he had his powers since birth... so what if the baby splits in two when the doctor (I wish "the doctor" would be Doctor Reyes... Cecilia Reyes, sigh) slaps him in the back?... and what if he could join himself with Madrox Prime... Weird!!! He could be his own son, thus ending his relationship with Syrin... and get married with Michael J. Fox, sorry, with Layla when she comes back from the future...

I really loved this issue.
I never realized how much of the core Layla is to this team and seeing all the different personalities react in their own way was interesting. Even Monet had this strong front but I felt like she really cared deep down inside. Maybe really subtle, may I'm making this up.
Its interesting that Madrox is already getting tangled up with the Purifiers. I wonder if the two X-Fs will bump into each other sooner rather than later.

Ok, well then, I'll rephrase mine as well, I agree with you :). I'm hoping that they'll retcon it and say that when Madrox absorbs dupes, he absorbs their memories (I mean that's what happens right?). Therefore if he doesn't like a certain memory he can just block it out or have a psych cut it out of his head. Then the "M" would go away.

Seems like Rahne leaving is more about it's impact on others than on her. I like PAD, but it's a damn shame that Rahne's entire time on X-Factor seems more like she was part of the supporting cast and not main cast. Why doesn't Marvel just call the book Madrox and get it over with?

The team seems to be tearing appart without Layla. Interesting how she became what kept them together even though nobody wanted her at first.
And with Rahne leaving as well, this are hard times for X-Factor. Monet crushing her ipod was so cruel but hilarious.
Madrox taking on the Purifiers by himself was neat, and I'm glad the tatto just didn't dissapear, the preview was making me nervous.
Poor Rictor, I can see his suicidal tendencies coming back after this...
I just can't wait to see Madrox' face when he learns of Syrin's pregnancy.

I loved this ish. The team really is falling apart without Layla. Everything has gone to hell. I felt so, so bad for Rictor when Rahne wasnt there for him... I really like those two together. I wonder if PAD was planning on writing Wolfsbane out, or if editorial mandated that C&C get her for X-Force.
And with Rahne leaving as well, this are hard times for X-Factor. Monet crushing her ipod was so cruel but hilarious.
When I saw the preview for that page with no text, I just thought Monet was being MEGA-bitch. I kind of hated her. But in some weird twisted way, that was Monet being nice. Its the only way she knows how to be nice. She really was trying to tell Rahne she cared about her. So now I like that scene. :)

Another awesome issue of X-Factor. I especially loved how Madrox just opened a can of whupass on those Purifiers. That's my man.
Speaking of Madrox, what will he do when he finds out Theresa's pregnant?? You KNOW she's not going to tell him. I'm going to make a bet that Monet lets it slip.
I still don't understand why Rahne can't tell the team where she's going. And I really don't want her to leave either.... I wonder if it was mandated that she be in X-Force? I wonder if PAD was pissed to lose her? It certainly mucks up this burgeoning Rictor/Rahne romance. Those two have had the WORST relationship history. They got together right before the X-Tinction Agenda, only to be seperated right after, not meeting again until the X-Cutioner's Song where it was painfully obvious the attraction and chemistry was gone. And now, years and years later they finally get back together.... only to get seperated once more.
Oh, and I hope the team finds Layla soon because I miss her majorally. She definitely adds a little something extra to the book.
As for Madrox's tattoo.... I'm glad he's covering it up with makeup because I don't want to see that on Jamie permantely for now on. Remember when Chuck Austen gave Havok that ridiculous scar from time travelling back to the 616 universe? Soooo beat. Thank goodness that scar disappeared as soon as Austen did. I don't know, I just don't like when characters undergo "permanent" body changes. Like remember when they made Mystique look like her movie counterpart? That was lame too (and didn't last). Same goes for Jamie's tattoo. I could definitely do without it. Thank God for coverup.
As for the art, it was good, not great. Some panels were a little bland and stiff. Raimondi's produced much better work in the past, hopefully this was just a rushed issue. He best be on his A-game for his next issue.
Overall, a quite enjoyable issue. Monet crushing that iPhone was bitchin'.

X-Factor needs to be involved in something big. Its the only non-"X-Men" title (whether fans will believe the YXM are an official X-Men team is yet to be seen) without Wolverine. I'm a big fan of all the character moments in this book, but I really hope they're more in the center of bigger things.

This was a really depressing issue, but in a good way. PAD's writing really made you feel for the characters.

And Jamie still has the M tattoo!! I wonder if he'll eventually lose it and Layla is still pimping it out in the future.
Even though Messiah Complex was a lot of fun it's great to see X-Factor get back to it's plotlines.

What a gut-wrenching issue... :( given how it was established that the team doesn't know how to get Layla back, I guess we should expect her to return by herself at some point.
LOL at the Hungry Dupe! and LOLOL at the horny guy who wanted to beat Rictor up!
Madrox and Rictor were so sexy in this issue, all angry and angsty! Imma get an avatar with Jamie right now! And the big-ass "M" on his face might be sexy for now, but I predict it will get old SOON. Unless Layla keeps hers too, in which case he'd like them to have matching tattoos or something.

Great issue. I really didn't expected to see Jamie vs The Purifiers, that was cool. But just proves how X-force is useful. He didn't kill their leader, and eventually he will wake up and kill dozens of people (and already did it on X-force #1). And without Layla, this book really loses a lot, I'm missing her a lot already.
I imagine Rahne can't tell because Cyclops doesn't want people to know about X-Force. Yet another secret from Madrox that's going to make him mad.
Actually, Rahne was the one that came looking for Scott, so I figured that she didn't tell not because Scott told her to keep a secret, but because she didn't wanted people knowing she was willing to go into that direction and for the reasons she went.

Like, I still don't even know why she a part of the team anyway. Did she have any connections to any of the characters pre-X-Factor #1?
Guido looked a bit too giant for most of the issue. And what was up with his Brokeback Mountain reference? The way he said "Yeah, I'm a million laughs," made it seem like he was actually trying to be serious.
WHY, oh, why is Raimondi not pencilling the next issue? I had presumed he had gotten a lot of lead-in time during MC to do another full arc. :(

I still think his pencils haven't been what they were in the Madrox mini. Even the background characters had this great, urban glamour that the main cast (save Madrox and Layla) have yet to be graced with.

They were all in Morrison's run as part of X-Corporation except Wolfsbane and Guido. Monet was weirdly emo in the issue. It was one of the few cases I didn't like Morrison's grasp on a character.

What I really liked about this issue was that not only were we back in the fold with the characters, but every member of the team (sans Layla) had their own important parts, all equally split between them. In past issues of the team, the book would mostly focus on Jaime while everyone else would be here and there or it'd focus on another with not much of others playing big parts. For example, usually Rahne and Guido would be the "background" characters. But in this issue, everyone was focused on equally and that was really good to see. It was like the premiere of Season 3 of X-Factor and we needed to be introduced to everyone once again. :)

i really loved this issue. Ric is such a fantastic character. I liked Guido more in this too. The "I can't quit you" line to the resident bisexual was kinda funny.
I loved the interaction between M and Siryn. Those two plus Ric, totally make me not miss Layla as much. Who are they gonna replace Rahne and Guido with? Are there going to be cast additions?
Was the narration done all by Ric? I thought it was Madrox until the last page made me think it was poor Rictor.

I think Madrox was responsible for all the narration.
Is Guido necessarily leaving just because he's the new sherriff?

wow! i love the issue, PAD is a genius, for being an issue after a crossover it has a lot of character development and not boring at all (unlike uncanny....)!
Siryn is pregnant! but would be great to see M pregnant too... but she still don't know anything about it? and she will realise in the next few issues while helping Siryn because of the symptoms...? (vomiting, etc).
i think Guido won't be part of the team but will still be a supportive character, specially with what's going on on mutant town. i think PAD make him sheriff not to take him out of teh book, but to give him some development.
Love Madrox as always and i really miss Layla moments in the issue, i hope she return soon.
i love Rictor, too, great moments for this character in this issue.
and i hope rahne will stay, but...well... i hate x-force! but in the new x-position it is said that these books will cross paths, maybe the team will found out about x-force sooner than what we expect

I'm loving the idea that both of them are preg.
I don't. All the women preggers and the other one hooking it up on the side?!
Seriously, it would just be a bit much IMO.

This issue felt solid as always. PAD and Raimondi really can do no wrong
The moment Madrox whipped out a gun and shot the purifier leader... My mouth was literally down on the floor. I was shocked. The fight sequence and the inner monologue reminded me of the Angel tv series. The loss and sorrow felt by all the characters came out pretty strong.
two thumbs up!

Dr Who fans rock!
I'm assuming that the contractor that Rictor refers to is Saxon.
If that's the case, I hope Raimondi can draw a good likeness of John Simm.:D
Nice to see the Purifiers becoming the X-Universe's own answer to Hydra or AIM goons. A gaggle of faceless cannon fodder good to have around for an impromptu fight scene here and there, as I gather they got shredded over in X-Force #1 this month, as well.
I wonder if Madrox, in his quest to rescue Layla, will now make the rounds to the various individuals in the MU possessed of time-travel capability, the way Hank did to the MU's top scientists in Endangered Species? Forge (obviously, as the one who got them into this mess), Mr. Fantastic, Dr. Doom, Dr. Strange, Cable, Kang...hmm, some of these guys might be kind of hard to get an appointment with.

He might as well, if Dr. Strane can be found at this point. Spidey did the same thing before the infamous deal- that sort of quest seems to be a Marvel theme of late.

What a way to open up the issue.
"And I got myself knocked up with Jamie's child". One of the best issues in recent times, I think.
Did anyone else get the vibe that Jamie was starting to feel alot more for Layla? I was just thinking about the future where Layla and Jamie were married...It'll be weird to see if Siryn still has Jamie's baby by then, if that ever occurs.

What about that evil company they were fighting the first 12 issues? 10 bucks says they offer Jamie a deal.

I'm sure Layla knew this beforehand (and we all saw she did nothing to prevent it):p
She didn't know. She was pretty weirded out when Robo-Bitch found the preggers test.

I'm loving the idea that both of them are preg.
That was my first thought when I saw the scene of the two of them in the bar- that M would be confessing her pregnancy, too. Turned out not to be the case, but I'm still wondering if that little nugget of info won't be coming down the line (after the "sick" sequence a couple of issues ago).
This really is one of the best titles out there, and may I just say how glad I am that the crossover is done with? I know that PAD does the best he can with those things, just like he did with the numerous X-Overs during his first X-Factor run back in the day, but I don't read the other X-Books and can't stand getting what feels like only part of the story, so the last couple of issues were less than stellar as a result.
Glad that PAD's got full control over the stories and direction again in his book. Yippee!
(And what an issue. Full of issues. Just the way we likes 'em. Oh- and did I mention that PAD's powerless Rictor is the only incarnation of the character I've ever liked? He's awesome.)

You can't say there isn't enough of Madrox to go around, though.
(And surely, at some point during his "finding himself phase" he must have sent one of his dupes to learn something about child rearing? Aside from the one that actually had kids that he didn't reabsorb, that is.)

Definitely, as his inner monologue in this issue reveals, though not in "that" way, I don't think. She's still very much a child, despite her maturity, and I don't think Madrox would harbor any romantic feelings towards her. He probably relates to her on levels the others don't since he's essentially an orphan himself.
