View Full Version : New X-men from the Beginning
Kid Icarus

Taking a page out of David R's book of tricks, and in lieu of the apparent cancellation of New X-men, I think it would be both fun and educational for us to reacquaint ourselves with the next generation of x-men.
Same rules apply here. Reading one issue a day, and posting a review here. Trying to read them like a new reader would, discovering each issue for the first time. Everyone at CBR is welcomed and encouraged to join in. I know this may be too ambitious to complete, but I want to give it a try!
The only rule I'd like to have is no mention be made of later events. As though those events haven't happened yet. Each review mentions the issue and ones published before it, and that is it.

We start out in Caracas, Venezuela. A riot has broken out and continues until the police arrive on horses shooting away at the citizens. I appears that only one life was lost in the conflict, that of Miranda Mantega the mother of a young mutant.
Not far away, her daughter is seen using her mutant ability of wind control to make her young cousin’s kite fly. Leaning on a near by fence, her Uncle Paolo and his friend watches them play. A man brings the news of Miranda's death to them. The wind carries their words to Sofia who wonders to herself where her new life will lead her.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/nm1_1.jpg
At the funeral for her mother, Sofia hears the words of everyone around her. Paolo doesn't have the patience to raise a mutant and already has three kids of his own to feed. They have contacted her father in America. If he hadn't known he had a daughter, he did now.
A plane arrives in Denver, Colorado. Sofia is greeted by Derek, her father's assistant and then gets into a limo. Here, she finally meets her father who tells her to shush until he finishes his game of solitaire. He eventually tells her that she is to behave, learn English, and above all never use her powers again.
Cut to January, Sofia attends a prep school full of not so nice peers. She is quickly isolated after asking for help to a class room and then immediately made fun of for her lack of English skillz.
May of the same year. It is Sofia's birthday today (which i never realized was in May) and Derek gave her a new charm for her bracelet. He offers to take her to a movie, but she declines stating that her father would not deal with any such shenanigans. She asks her pops if he would like to eat diner with her, to which he replies why? She tells him its her birthday, and he tells Derek to buy her a present.
Back at school, Sofia uses her eavesdropping powers to try to make birthday plans with strangers. When she finds some kids who have no plans, she invites them to party but is quickly shut down. She continues to walk across the lawn and after looking around to make sure she was alone, she uses her wind powers to propel herself (not very gracefully) over the wall surrounding the school and runs away.
Next. we see Barret's superimart (not quite sure what the i is for). It is the on of the stores in her father's chain. Sofia seems a little ticked off now. She walks to the middle of the store and waits for the customers to leave, looks directly into the camera, and let's out her powers in a WIND BLAST whoohing the store into oblivion
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/nm1_2.jpg
Some cops come in and arrest her taking her away.
A woman sees this on the news and quickly gets into her jeep speeding away from her mountain cabin.
In jail, Sofia's awesome dad tells her that he hopes she has an awesome time in prison. She says she only wanted him to notice her for once. He will drop all charges in 48 hours but will not post bail. Derek tries to convince him otherwise, but Sofia is to be sent back to South America. There is no place for her here.
SPLASH PAGE
It's Danielle Moonstar, and boy, does she know a place!
She tells him of Mutants School for Higher Learning (formerly the School for Gifted youngsters). He refuses to send his daughter there for the bad publicity he will receive. She tells him that if he tries the alternative, then he will see a whole new kind of bad publicity. burn. What are your powers, he asks.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/nm1_3.jpg
Dani meets Sofia and tells her the wonders of Xavier's. They will help her use her powers and she will be accepted for who she is. Dani tells her that it seems like there is not much holding her there. Sofia says there is one thing.
She tells Derek she is leaving and gives him a hug. They walk out together leaving Sofia's past life behind them and entering a new chapter in the life of the X-men.

We're introduced to Laurie Collins. She's a cute, shy girl that seems to keep to herself and hide inside a shell because whatever emotion she feels, others will feel them, too, through her pheromones.

Romantic!
Even when she moves to Xavier's, she still keeps to herself and is an outcast among outcasts.
Sofia Mantega and Danielle Moonstar arrive to Xavier's (ED: see last issue), where we get all the mandatory introductions to Professor Xavier, the school, and all its wonders.
The tour leads them to a game of Jenga where Sofia meets Julian Keller and the adults let the dark haired cutie continue the tour. But oh no! Julian's late for Northstar's flight class! Sofia watches as a guest while everyone has a quiz on lift offs. She uh...sucks.
http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7272/flybetchgn4.jpg
Sofia starts to get to know Julian's friends and more mandatory "what can you do" kind of stuff. It was the decompression age: we drank, we made love, we waited patiently for things to move along.
While in the cafeteria, Laurie catches the eye of Moonstar and learns about her story. Perfecto! Laurie can finally get a roommate and bunk with Sofia since Sofia's control over the wind shields her from Laurie's emotion altering abilities!

Review
I never realized how slow this issue was. It really reads a lot like a Miyazaki film where you can imagine scenes with akward silences and no soundtrack in the background while someone sighs. I don't know if its the anime inspiration of the now-defunct Tsunami line, the decompression 6-issue arc age, or a mixture of both, but it was a slow issue.
Love Sofia more and more, but the pacing could use a pat on the butt.
Art is still creepy and bland as last issue's, but some interesting new faces gives you something colorful and flashy to look at for a little while.

I liked these early covers a lot. In fact, I thought they were gorgeous.
Kid Icarus, what a great idea. I've not read this series yet, so I will be reading your summaries to see what it was like. I heard a lot of good things about it. :)

Again, a gorgeously stunning cover. Sofia's life sounds tragic. Her father sounds like a jerk, and of course, she is made fun of in her school. Because she is different. (If they only knew how DIFFERENT Sofia really is, eh?)
What exactly are all of Sofia's powers?
Danielle Moonstar is probably the best thing that could have happened for Sofia. Getting away from her father sounds like the best thing possible. Are these issues reprinted in a trade?

We're introduced to Laurie Collins. She's a cute, shy girl that seems to keep to herself and hide inside a shell because whatever emotion she feels, others will feel them, too, through her pheromones.
These 2 issues remind me of Giant-Size X-Men #1. Finding and locating new mutants, only with Danielle Moonstar taking the place of Professor Xavier.
While in the cafeteria, Laurie catches the eye of Moonstar and learns about her story. Perfecto! Laurie can finally get a roommate and bunk with Sofia since Sofia's control over the wind shields her from Laurie's emotion altering abilities!
Them rooming together sounds like when Kitty Pryde & Illyana Rasputin were bunking together in the old days.

Do you mean very little happened in #2? Slow like decompressed? I noticed this too when these issues 1st came out, and was a reason I did not get the series.

The art from these panels looks ok to me. It's too bad the cover art couldn't grace the insides too. (Another nice cover, I think!):p

What exactly are all of Sofia's powers?
She can control and manipulate the wind to fly, create tornados, make breezes, and gusts. She can also compact the air near people's heads to make them dizzy and lose their balance. She can use the wind to bring her sounds from far away, so she can use this power to listen to far away conversations, or even take away the voices of people. She can also use her wind gusts to create wind burn.
Sofia ROCKS!! C&C were way messed up to depower her.

Well there was so much established about her she is the easiest one to "mess up" even when she's not written that far to her true character.

What do you mean? "She had shown the ability" and "she can" are the same, right? She did it in New Mutants #6 when fighting the Reavers in NYC. I think it was 6, maybe it was 5... I guess we'll find out in this thread!

Its not an empty issue by any means, but I think my impatience got the best of me and I really wish there was more fire in these earlier issues. There aren't any splash pages or anything, but there were some very pedestrian strolls through the school that I wish were abbreviated.
I caught on to the series around issue 10 so I was able to read them in chunks so I never noticed it before.
The art from these panels looks ok to me. It's too bad the cover art couldn't grace the insides too. (Another nice cover, I think!):p

Its my understanding that Marvel depowered her (I wonder if they planned for her to be in a New Warriors-ish series all along), and she was supposed to keep her powers only to die a little later.
I think if Sofia stuck around I would've enjoyed those earlier issues a bit more (I became a fan of C&C's run during QFM). I felt as devastated as the Young X-Men non-fans.
Hopefully her return as Renascence is a fate much better than death.

Trust me, there were PLENTY of complaints during C&C's run.
Of course. And it didn't have the pleasure of a four-month cooling off period Young X-Men has.
Then again, the uncertainty could also be worst.
Just saying, I understand but...Greymalkin rocks.
Or he will rock.
And is made up of rock.
Maybe.
Oooooh, gotcha... :(
I really want her to get her wind powers back at some point. She's just not the same without them...
Me too, but get them enhanced or something. She did a lot of neat tricks with her powers, but her main powers seems to basically be telekinesis which her loverboy already has.
I would love to see Sofia do something like Riptide or steal homage Psylocke's psychic knife with a tempest punch (shut up) or something like that.
So I guess I'm saying I can see the logic in her getting depowered, but I still would love for her to run with the X-crowd again as a mutant proper.

I just remembered another power Sofia had the potential to use. In the Christmas issue of X-Men that Chris Claremont wrote, we saw Storm privately tutoring Sofia. She was teaching her how to use the winds to control air pressure and change the temperature.
I read an old interview by N&C the other day, and they were really happy with that scene. They always wanted to write in a scene with Storm and Sofia together, but it just never happened. They wanted to have Storm teaching Sofia, and then have Sofia try and teach Storm about how to use the winds to listen to sounds. Storm wouldnt have been able to do it.

New Mutants vol. 2 #3
Danielle Moonstar is ready to leave to recruit a kid from Atlanta. Professor X emphasizes to Dani that she must use discretion in outing the mutant even though the school is now public. Professor X looks at a photograph of the Old-New Mutants. The two old friends reflect over their losses in a close-up to Cypher and Illyana Rasputin.
Danielle Moonstar: "By the way, I heard Allison came back to the school, but I haven't seen her yet."
Professor X: "She's...away."
Danielle Moonstar: "If she gets back before I do, tell her I said hi. I've got to catch a flight."
The next page shows a comatose Magma and Professor X by her side relaying Danielle's message telepathically.
Cut to Beast teaching Algebra in his own special way.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/greymalkin_ln/beast.jpg
Sofia meets with Julian outside her class. Julian offers to be Sofia's guide around the place and Sofia asks if there's any place to dance. Laurie walks by and Sofia offers her to have lunch but Julian just isn't having that.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/greymalkin_ln/julianisajerk.jpg
...and Sofia isn't either.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/greymalkin_ln/compactedair.jpg
Meanwhile, Moonstar arrives at the Ford home in Atlanta. No one is home and everything seems normal except for a worn shirt and a pile of ash.
Elswhere in Atlanta, a young boy walks in a park draped in a green cloth. People stare as he goes to a junk yard to be alone. He watches the sunset, seemingly reflective, until a vicious dog attacks him. The dog bites his arm and drops dead on the ground.
Danielle visits the Ford boy's school. Kevin's teacher vouches that Kevin is a good kid raised by a single father, but records show he had missed the last couple of days of school. Turns out Kevin Ford is an artistic prodigy who can "bring life to scraps of metal".
Teacher: "While most kids his age are hanging out at the mall, Kevin's sneaking into that old junk yard to gather material."
Back at the junkyard, two workers discover their dead dog and begin to attack Kevin. Not willing to kill, he gets kicked in the stomach and beat with a pipe until Danielle arrives and throws them bows.

Kevin explains his mutant power to decay matter and Danielle pieces together what happened to Kevin's father. Kevin explains and its really tragic stuff.
They return to his home to get him some clothes (polyester as apparently he only decays organic matter). Kevin is afraid Danielle will take him to jail, but his worry turns into enthusiasm when he finds out she's taking him to the XAVIER INSTITUTE!
Back at the mansion, Nurse Annie checks on Kevin who is excited to one day become an X-Man. Professor Xavier reveals to Danielle that Magma was crucified on the lawn of the Institute by the Church of Humanity (--see Chuck Austen's Uncanny X-Men). The professor admits it was wrong of him to send her off recruiting children when he's not even sure its safe at the school.
Danielle: "Safe? When I found Kevin, they were beating him with a lead pipe! The world isn't safe."
Danielle encourages the Professor that the dream is still alive and that the school is a save haven for mutants.
Professor: You're right. I guess I was ashamed. You and your classmates...you looked up to me and I let you down".
Danielle: "You're not perfect, Charles. And I know that. I'm not a child anymore."
Professor: "So I'm learning".

Review: I really enjoyed this issue. Kevin's origin is pretty sick and tragic and Danielle switched gracefully between being her bad ass warrior self and a great mentor.
The school is presented in a more fun, less tour guide way with a brief cameo by Beast and the sassy stylings of Sofia Mantega.
While its still not an epic saga of x-treme proportions, I think this issue (especially in contrast to the previous one) would be a point where I'd get interested in these characters and this story a little more.
Even the art was a lot easier on the eyes. Go Keron!

LOL
Remember when Julian and Josh almost killed her? Good times.
Anyway, issue #3 was OK. I'm a Kevin fan, so I was pleased with his introduction. Sofia was a blast at the mansion.
But I wasn't feeling this book yet by this time. The pacing was not for my liking.

The pacing still left a lot to be desired. I know its really picky, but I also didn't like how some sentences felt fragmented (I also noticed it in C&C's run too). I probably do it. Occasionally, too. But it still bugs me.

That is bittersweet.
The next page shows a comatose Magma and Professor X by her side relaying Danielle's message telepathically.
That is quite touching. How did Magma become comatose?
Cut to Beast teaching Algebra in his own special way.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/greymalkin_ln/beast.jpg
I like the idea of the older X-Men teaching these new students. It seemed like a natural progression. Even "Professor Wolverine" I liked. :)
They return to his home to get him some clothes (polyester as apparently he only decays organic matter). Kevin is afraid Danielle will take him to jail, but his worry turns into enthusiasm when he finds out she's taking him to the XAVIER INSTITUTE!
Wait, Kevin killed his father?? (Inventive mutant power, though.)
Professor: You're right. I guess I was ashamed. You and your classmates...you looked up to me and I let you down".
Danielle: "You're not pefect, Charles. And I know that. I'm not a child anymore."
Professor: "So I'm learning".
I like this exchange between them. Danielle has really matured.
The school is presented in a more fun, less tour guide way with a brief cameo by Beast and the sassy stylings of Sofia Mantega.
I like it when we see the School in the eyes of a new student. It sounds like this series did that. It's fun seeing these well-established characters to someone young who's never heard of them before.

The Church of Humanity crucified a bunch of mutants on the X-Men's front lawn. It happened in Uncanny X-Men, but I'm not sure when... Among the mutants crucified were Jubilee, Magma, Skin, and three others. I dont know who the others were. I think the only ones to survive the attack were Jubilee and Magma.
Wait, Kevin killed his father?? (Inventive mutant power, though.)
Yup. His powers turned on, and his father tried to comfort him, and the next thing they know... Daddy's dead. Very sad. And Kevin didnt know what to do, so he just sat there hugging his dad's dead body sobbing, until his dad didnt even have a body anymore.
REALLY depressing...

Ooh, that is pretty traumatizing. How horrible. Kevin would be scarred for life. I'm not sure Xavier or any X-Men could save him from a lifetime of sorrow after that.

1st Appearance: David Alleyne, Kim Alleyne
In Chicago, we meet David Alleyne who is making breakfast for his family. He offers the Eggs Benedict to his father who responds with an
"Egadd, how do you know how to make these?"
David replies that his dad must have taught him how to at some point, because he obviously knows how to do it. He tells them that he is going to enrole in yet another college class over the summer (because really, what else is there to do in the summer  ). Kim, his 14 year old sister, is told that she needs some supervision, but that's ok because David knows a swell librarian at the school who she can stay with while he is in class. Outside the window, two voices confirm that even though he is normal looking, David is in fact a mutant.
Meanwhile back at the Institute, Professor Xavier and Dani are sitting behind a computer. It appears that Cerebra has been picking up mutant signals from Chicago for the past year at three distinct locations. It also appears that whoever the mutant is, has come into contact with someone very familiar to Cerebra.
Back in Chicago, Shan, and Leong Manh are trying to get to a graduation ceremony. Dr. Sean Garrison, a mutant sympathizer, is speaking at the ceremony according to a poster hung in the alley way. This poster, however, draws the attention of some mutant hating thugs who think that defacing the poster with red spray paint will really affect their futures and the outcome of the human race... Seeing this, Shan gets a tad bit peeved and goes karma! on them, possessing one of the kids and making him spray the other in the back of the head. Smirking, Shan and her siblings continue on.
At the ceremony Shan situates her brother and sister in the audience before she takes her place up front. There is an empty seat saved for Kitty, but Shan has little hope that she will show.(I'm not sure what the back story here is). Dr. Garrison takes the stage and tells the class that they have to suck it up and rub some dirt in it. Someone in the world will always be jealous of them no matter what they do, and it is out of jealousy that hate is derived.
Shan graduates college! and as she returns to her seat she sees a third person waiting for her.
Shan takes Dani back to her house where her and her siblings live. Dani askes who hooked her up with the place to which Shan replies in another cryptic manner something about Kitty that I am still behooved by. The twins ask Dani is she wants to play Monnaie Disponible (money available). Shan advises against it, since they make up the rules and are trying to con their good friend for drug money. Dani cuts right to the chase and tells Shan that there is a mutant somewhere in Chicago (which was like duh, half the country is mutants now you would probably find more than one in the Windy City...) and the Shan has come into contact with them at the university. She knows right away that it is David. But back to the small talk, Shan asks Dani if she has seen the rest of the old gang.
Dani: There's something I need to tell you...its about Magma.
Back at the Institute, Xavier asks Kevin if he likes his new threads.
"Well, they match the gloves."
The Prof surfaces some bad memories for Kevin and tells him not to kill anyone (aka be careful). Kevin walks alone down the hallway trying to avoid his classmates, but he is still spotted by Laurie and Sofia. Sofia tells Laurie she didn't realize that Laurie was "into" the goth crowd. Laurie says that Kevin is not goth, only lonely.
Back in Chicago, David leaves his sister with Shan so he can go learn about stuff. In class, the teacher tells the students that he is adding a new book to the syllabus and he asks what the importance of the book is. Some boy whines about the fact that they shouldn't yet know what the book is about since they haven't even read it. The teacher asks David what he thinks is the importance of the book, and he spiels out this drawn out answer about the author's theories of life. Out in the hallway, Dani is spying.
After class, David goes and asks Shan for the new book that they are supposed to read for class. She asks how to spell the author's last name and he responds that he has no idea. Dani jumps out and begins to ask shower him with question. She asks him how he knew all that stuff, was he a telepath or what? Kim, seeing her brother, gets up and they leave together leaving the book behind.
Back at the Alleyne residence there's a knock at the door. Someone left a picture on the door of David eating breakfast with the words Mutant wanted: dead or alive on it. David freaks out a lil bit and wonders if Shan and Dani had figured it out somehow. His dad asks if it is true, and David "comes out" to him getting a little fed up at the situation and storming out of the door. Little Kim tells her dad how awesome that just was, and storms out after him.
Kim meets up with him and they hug. She always knew he was a freak, but now she knew it was genetic. Dani and Shan appear and tell David that they need to talk. He gets defensive and asks why they put the picture on his door. It wasn't them of course, it had...to be...PURITY!
And speak of the devil, an anti mutant gang came just in time to beat up some muties. They tell Dani and Shan to step aside so they can deal with the mutant. Haha, but there's three mutants here! or even more.
The illsuion scares off most of the attackers, but not all of them. This is quickly taken care of when Shan possess one of them and has him beat up one of the others. That leaves only one mean man left, but he is a black belt he tells the world.
Using his power, David quickly takes care of him and the rest of them run off. He tells Shan that she seems to normal to be a mutant, to which she replies, I'm a lesbian immigrant (ok....). She tells him that he will fit in great at Xavier's school.
Back at David's house, he tells his parents about his gift. He knows everything that people around him know. If someone knows French and is standing by him, then he can speak French. However, once they leave, it gradually wears off. And that is the reason he studies so hard, he wants to learn it for realz. He says his good byes and then leaves with Dani and Shan
The twins ask him if he wants to play Monnaie Disponible. David is game, he knows all of the rules.

When N&C originally wrote this story, they wanted to make it a tie-in to the Mekanix story that was going on at the time. Kitty and Shan went to the same college, and for a bit, Kitty thought she might have been bisexual, and Shan was trying to go out with her. I never read Mekanix, but I'm assuming the apartment was Kitty's before she left for X-Treme X-Men.
Its kind of silly that Marvel refused to allow this issue to tie-in to Mekanix. Ya know? The way they found out that David was a mutant was with Alice's Sentinel. Which is something from Mekanix that I dont know about cus I never read it. But N&C werent allowed to make this issue "crossover" with Mekanix. Which is just silly to me, because it would get more people to buy both issues.
Marvel really amazes me sometimes.

One of the main things that I wish we could have gotten was the minis about each squad. We got the Hellions mini, but there was a Corsairs mini, a Paragons mini, and an Alpha Squadron mini planned as well. The Paragons mini would have had the squad go to Nova Roma with Magma and prove she was right all along, and the Alpha Squadron mini would have had the squad go to find Aurora, cus at that point she hadnt been located yet. I dont think they had planned anything for the Corsairs mini yet.

Here's who Nunzio and Christina planned to keep their powers:
Well, our initial plan was to depower as few as possible, but given the scope of decimation, we would have been asked to rethink that.
In that case, we has wanted our HOM arc to take the kids into Genosha briefly, allowing Scarlet Witch to see the Hellions and the New Mutants, thus creating a certain logic to most of those kids keeping their powers.
Still, we'd have depowered most of the undefined kids, and probably would have depowered a couple of high profile kids just to shock people.
Then we'd have had Josh repower the ones we needed/wanted before he'd go too far and have to be stopped (which would have stopped him from repowering the whole student body).
We likely would have depowered all the students except:
The New Mutants
The Hellions
Victor
the Vale sisters
Pixie
Quill
Dryad
D.J.
Jeffrey Garrett
Hisako and all other kids needed for other books
and there's no way we would have depowered X-23 as we had been planning to add her to the book anyway.
Everyone else would have lost their powers.
Then we likely would have depowered a couple of Hellions and NMs and had Josh repower them before his story went out of control.
The only one we know we would have done that for sure with was David. But as we said, Josh would be our way of bringing back the NMs and Hellions.
We would have lost Loa and Trance.

I think it's for the best that Nunzio/Christina's plans for Josh didn't go through as that basically meant that it was reversible. Rachel changes DNA (see Dino Rachel) and could have solved it right there and then. And then it would've been moot.
As for their choices I'd miss too many and only truly gain Preview :(
lol, out of everyone I wish would've been kept powered, the Vale sisters are the only ones who really really deserved to be there. Yes I would've loved to see Dryad & DJ there, but if that had happened, I would be losing Trance & Loa :(

I never liked the idea of DJ. He's so...Inky, power-wise.
I would've saved Dryad, but only because we never got to see her in action. For all I know, she could've been super-lames.

Nunzio and Christina would have depower Loa and Trance and that would be awful!

After seeing their list, I think I see why Marvel would've been unsure about letting N&C make the big decision of who to depower after M-Day. It sucks that they couldn't, but it seemed like they were definitely attached to their babies and wouldn't have wanted to let some go (which is understandable). BUUUT who am I to say that? I still think its a crime Sofia *was* depowered.
And I'm soooo glad someone got rid of Jeffrey Garrett. I was not feeling that concept at all. Maybe now that Pixie has dabbed in Limbo, she can do something cooky and revisit it though.

so far there is only one way known to man to actualy rewrite the human dna
and that is with a virus, even so this only replaces/rewrites only one tiny bit of the dna, and each virus body only rewrites one cel. so to do it you wil need lots of viruses.
but even if you have the amount of different viruses to rewrite every single specific part of dna, then the method will still have two major flaws.
one, you need to know what just must rewrite and what to rewrite it with
and two, viruses mutate, so the friendly virus can become a not so friendly virus
ofcourse these facts probably have now reall meaning in comic world :p

LOL. I agree! I'm unsure about Surge as well. Icarus was the death to me! DEATH! I don't know why editorial wanted him.
Elixir I would've kept only for his eventual breakdown and return as the Zen, Loa-kissing fiend he ended up many issues later.
I liked the New Mutants, but I'm sad that she befriended them first, preventing her from being Mafia Princess Sofia Mantega of the Hellions squad. She totally should've switched over.

See you got the right idea. Basically Josh can do that based on the scope of his full powers, but in order to do it he has to actually work it out mentally. It's a ton of work, and as we saw Josh barely has the stamina to reconstruct a heart.
He has a long way to go before he can repower the mutant race.
Also N&C's version of Josh obviously differs from this.
I'm mostly happy with the depowerings that C&C went with. I probably would have kept Quill and Icarus around though.

Well thank you, I enjoy it quite a bit. I was re-reading the old issues and this panel kinda jumped out at me. And through the power of Photoshop, I brought them as close as they should always be.
And regarding the people on the bus. I never understood why Callie was on it. Wasn't the bus for the kids whose families didn't want them back? If so, Callie's dad was a mutant, he was the school's gardener or something along those lines. I know he designed the hedge maze. So I never understood why he wouldn't have taken Callie back.

The bus was just for the kids who hadn't left yet. I'm pretty it was never said that they're parents wouldn't take them back, and this seems unlikely as only 8(?) were buried at the schools graveyard because their bodies wouldn't be taken back.

very true indeed, though it strikes me that we never really saw anything about parents beeing consurned about the students that are still alive.
i mean your son/daughter is at a school where they get blown up, shot, knived, possible disintergrated and get to fly jets without hardly any lessons if none at all
wouldnt you be concerned about that? i mean there still alive for now wouldnt you want to keep it that way?
but apperently the comic parents dont realy care:confused:

Yeah, that did always strike me as rather odd. In the case of characters like Surge and Elixir, it makes sense for the parents to not care. But for someone like Anole, I imagine there must have been some concern since they sent him to the university for his safety.

I always thought that Anole might have a bit of a crush on Hellion. I mean, I'm not a slash Hellion Anole shipper, and I know Anole knows that nothing would come of it, but I do think that Vic had a bit of a crush on his friend. They were very close, Hellion was popular, funny, good looking, powerful, and charismatic. Why wouldnt Vic have a little bit of a crush on him?

Did Callie's father live on the grounds?
Another possible explanation is that Callie (like Sarah Vale) choose to stay at the school as long as Emma and Scott were willing to let her. Reasons why could have been the hope that they'd find a way to reverse the power loss, not wanting to leave their friends, or the simple fact that the Institute is a fully functional school and there was no real reason for anyone to leave (though it's understandable why most would). Following the attack on Icarus Emma and Scott decided that it was best to remove the remaining depowered kids from the school, I'd think they were hoping to save them from being collateral damage in a potential attack on the many mutants living on the grounds at the time. They couldn't have known Stryker would target the depowered kids.

I've gotta agree with the people who said they would rather have Sofia than Nori. Nori would have been a much better fit on the NW than Sofia would have. Every New Mutant but Elixir and Sofia should have been depowered, as should Tag have, and though I like Santo, he should have gone too.
I'm really concerned that we won't find out what happened to Elixir and Kevin now that New X-Men is kaput.

Yeah, it is much more dangerous on their own.... Which is why Cyclops told them all to beat it as soon as MC ended. At least, that is what I assume he did since there hasn't been an explanation yet.

I think that other plans were made, but thats just a guess. I don't think that Emma would approve of endangering her students by sending them out solo.

Cyclops: Ok kids, X-Men are disbanded, school's destroyed. Time to go home.
Surge: But the Purifiers will come after us!
Cyclops: Not my problem.
Wolfcub: I don't have a home.
Cyclops: Here's a tent.
Hellion: This is totally nuts!
*Cyclops blasts a warning shot at the kids
Cyclops: Out!
Loa: Professor Summers is a jerk!

That is pretty much how I have been imagining it played out.
He seriously better have had a plan in mind for the kids. One that DIDN'T involve a bus.

I've actually thought out a unofficial New X-Men 47 that would have the kids disbanding and going home. I'm still debating if it's worth while to actually write it.
We're still waiting to see what happens to the kids. Annoyingly the books haven't addressed this issue at all, and I'm going to be annoyed if they just sent everyone home. It's illogical on so many levels. I half hope there's an X-Force issue where the Purifiers take out one of the kids at their house because of this and Logan smacks Scott around for being an idiot.

I should hope so. Doing a solo story for Anole and Gentle I'd hope they actually mention their status quo, but honestly they could avoid it there too.
I was hoping it would be mentioned in Uncanny. Just a quick line like "We sent the students home" or something. The only other book that logically should mention it is Young X-Men. There isn't much reason for X-Factor to mention it unless one of the kids ends up on the cast. Legacy seems to in a completely different place so such a mention would probably be illogical. It's possible a mention might show up eventually in X-Force considering X-23 is in it and it's written by Yost and Kyle. I kinda wonder if there's some secret plan for the New X-kids. Only 2 of them have a confirmed book, and those two, Dust and Rockslide are exactly the mainest kids.

3 w/X-23.
4 if you include Pixie (which although hasn't been confirmed has been highly suggested)
So with 4/9 we're almost half way there. Anole and Surge's status should be revealed in Divided we Stand putting us at 6 with Hellion, Mercury and Elixir not being accounted for. I could see Hellion going to the Initiative or New Warriors, and Mercury and Elixir getting Limboed.

Just thought I'd let y'all know: Whoever agrees with the decision to depower and kill Tag is wrong.
That was the worst move C&C ever made.

Nunzio said he always thought about making him come out to be gay eventually. Not as a boyfriend for Anole, just as another gay character.

He had a great design and he was a kid that everyone knew in high school, but his powers really killed his potential. Even Karma who has a more advanced version isn't even being used.
Its characters like Tag that make secondary mutations a useful, if not always good, plot device.

He had a very limited form of mind control. And regular mind control is pretty common, besides all the other Hellions had been developed more and had more interesting powers. And I doubt CC could get away with depowering atleast one member in every group, but the Hellions.

If Tag was not depowered. Then the Hellions would be the only squad that did not have a depowered member. Which they probably couldn't get away with.
I thought he was kind of boring, his powers weren't interesting. Story-Wise, he was just the best friend that was seen but not heard. His death was meant to develop Julian's character, and I would say it worked.

I don't remember Santo's reaction to his death, I will have to go reread that lol. But I do certainly remember his reaction to him being depowered :p

He froze during the attack and since then has been protective of his friends. He almost killed himself to save Cess or Julian (I think it was Hellion) and got pissed when Illyana was messin' around with the S'mores.

New Mutants Vol 2. #5
My TPB does not show the name of this issue so I shall call it Road trip to New York City! or The One where we meet Elixir
COVER.- A sexy karma taking a shower w/clothes and no water
ANYWAYS:
PREVIOUSLY IN NEW MUTANTS.- Sofia's mom died. Sad. Then Dani rescued her! She met Laurie. Dani took the job. She met up with Xian and found David. They came back to the mansion.
ISSUE SUMMARY.- We start out in good ol' NY. Donald Pierce, is talking to his new recruits. He tells them they are "being replaced by Homo Superior." He tell them he's faced them before and survived and proceeds to show how:his swiss army knife. Presto, a blade pops out of the wrist.
Josh now gets his first line ever. "Uh mr. Pierce. That's fug." well he doesn't exactly say that but he does say that he doesn't want that. He wants to be normal. Total burn for Pierce. Him thinking himself as part of the "normal group". So Pierce and Josh have their little back and forth which ends with Josh saying he needs to remain beautiful for the girls and Pierce cutting his hand. Crazy dude that Pierce. Anyways when Josh looks at his hand, he has no blood. He probably thinks Pierce is that good. After a little distraction, Pierce tells his Reavers that to lure those filthy muties out they need to go after their family and shows a picture of Sofia's dad (with her BFF Derek in the background)
Still in New York, Mr. I HATE MUTANTS aka Sofia's dad prohibits him of seeing Sofia. What a horrible bastard this dude.
At the institute, Xavier has a proposition for Shan. To be the sexy librarian all students dream of. And she says Yes. Oh Shan, if only you knew that you will be chained to that library :(. Then they go check up on David and Xavier informs him that there is a self defense class starting soon.
Self defense class taught by Logan. As Logan talks about stuff, Sofia informs Laurie that Derek called and wants to meet up! (We also get to see Anole's uglier and more deformed cousin Anolesque ) Then we get a cute little scene where we can clearly see how opposite Laurie and Sofia are. Sofia wants Laurie to sit next to Wither, but Laurie is to shy. David comes in and sits next to Wither but Hellion goes all *ss again and tells him to get away from the mutant w/the death touch. Logan then asks who wants to be an X-men. Only David doesn't raise his hand. So obviously Logan picks him. They spar, and David wins.
Lunch time! Wither, Prodigy, beautiful Sofia and Laurie are all eating together. Dani and Shan go to their table and decide to all go to New York City since Dani has to find a mutant and Sofia wants to meet up w/Derek. Awesomeness.
Then we see in parallel Derek getting ready to go meet Sofia while the Reavers get ready to kidnap the dad! Oh noes!
Sofia realizes Derek would never be late and something must be wrong, as Shan and Dani find out the mutant they're looking for is a reaver, and setting a trap for Sofia!
The New Mutants see the reavers and a fight ensues! Sofia uses the wind to cut one of the reavers, while Laurie tells her to chill. They go outside to the parking lot, and inside Josh sees his friend cut..and cures him. Thank god! But his reaver friend is disgusted and leaves. In the parking lot Wither wants Laurie to use her powers to make the reavers like them, but she's too scared... and now so is everyone else. The reavers run away but Wither is panicking too. He's taking his glove off. Lauria backs away slowly... right into Pierce's blade. Cliffhanger! OMG.
REVIEW.- I liked the issue. I think Sofia shines in this issue. We see how much she knows Derek, how secure in herself she is. And she uses her awesome powers. Hellion is a total ass. Sofia/Hellion -1 this issue.
Josh come across as a horribly shallow dude and the art helps. He is drawn like a total douche. Spiked hair, Ozzy shirt. I'd hate him.
Overall great issue. Some drama, some fun action!
