These are really good reviews. I only collected the first 6 issues of New X-Men, after that it got too much like High School. I shoulda stayed on Yost and Kyle's run.

"Field Day"
Written by: Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir
Breakdowns: by: Staz Johnson / Finishes: Scott Koblish
Edited by: Mike Marts
Continuing from last issue's beginning of the Field Day exercise, Sofia thinks she's got a leg up on the competition until she runs into one of Julian's telekinetic wall.
While bumping into a wall isn't glamorous, much worst is Julian's pedo face. EE. No scans because its NSFW.
The two flirt in the air while Icarus continues on with the exercise. The New Mutants are indecisive about what to do next and Joshua is totally fed up with Sofia and her "playing footsie with the enemy". Tag for the first time uses his powers and sends an electrically charged Nori running away from David. When the two are far enough for his power to lose its effect, Nori is surprised David still came looking for her despite it possibly costing them the game.
Meanwhile, the love triangle of Laurie/Kevin/Joshua wither through the hedgemaze to find...Lockheed! Kevin wants to decay the beast (and he should!) but Josh tackles him telling him that they were instructed to bring it in alive, not kill him (and probably some moral issues with the whole thing, too.)
BUT...the weirdest, and perhaps worst part of the issue and series happens: Icarus sings to Lockheed "Puff the Magic Dragon", and Lockheed becomes a complacent little pet. Yeah.
The Hellions win! BUT! they used their powers on the New Mutants! The three instructors (Dani, Emma, Scott) have to come to a ruling. After a quickie and a deliberation, Scott rules that the Hellions win because Tag's powers were inoffensive.
Josh is a sore loser and he's pretty upset at Sofia and she takes it hard. While in the air, Julian offered Sofia to join "his" Hellions, but we never hear her answer...
Laurie comforts an upset Sofia. They have a nice BFF moment. And elsewhere in the dorms, Nori continues to be a betjzchkovakov to Sooraya.
In the art room, Kevin is working on his metal sculpting when Cessily is all clingy and tries to move in on Kevin since she's one of the few people who can touch him since she is inorganic. Kevin sees Laurie from the window and Cessily realizes that she isn't what he wants anyway...
Victor and Josh are outside playing ball when Laurie approaches Josh to talk to him about how he treated Sofia. Before she gets close enough she also sees Rahne and Laurie sad. She's about to walk away when Josh notices her and invites her to dinner. Then Rahne pouts. Boohoo.
Squad tension increases when Kevin begins to sit with the Hellions and Sofia begins to feel alienated (which has been an unfamiliar feeling since arriving at Xavier's). David tells her she's too emotional, and Sofia believes that's exactly the reason why she's a terrible leader.
Victor alerts Scott that an FBI agent is here to see him and Justin Pierce (Donald Pierce's nephew) shows up revealing he's come to arrest Kevin for the murder of his father.

Review: This was perhaps my least favorite issues of the entire New Mutants/New X-Men run.
It heavily incorporated the things I didn't particularly like about the series.
The field day exercise was underwhelming, way too many angst love pentagons (Cessily-Kevin-Laurie-Josh-Rahne), uninspiring art, Jay singing to victory---it was a mess.
I'm a big fan of N&C's run, but I give this issue a big D.

I definitely agree this issue, and the previous were pretty bleh.
BUT!....
And elsewhere in the dorms, Nori continues to be a betjzchkovakov to Sooraya.
Complete hearsay to the point of slander. There is absolutely no evidence to support this outrageous claim! How dare you!
Unless by "betjzchkovakov" you mean "total sweetheart."

"Above the Law"
Written by: Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir

Edited by: Mike Marts
The issue starts off with a cute scene with Jay and Dust that I probably never appreciated before because of last issue's bizarre use of the red winged wedding singer. The two are alone for the night--Jay roams through the sky, discontent with the Hellions squad while his teammate Dust must eat alone because of her customs. Jay offers to take Dust for a flight, but she declines. Jay rushes back up into the air and notices several black cars parked in front of the Xavier school gates.
Cut to Kevin, who is being questioned by FBI Agent Justin Pierce, quite the hottie for having such a naughty uncle. Cyclops, Emma Frost, and Danielle Moonstar are in the room, but the three mutants cannot hold it together.
Cyclops: "Emma, we need to present a unified front on this one."
Emma Frost: "That would be impossible, Scott, given that we clearly don't agree."
Emma plays quite the mutant advocate here, fully supporting Kevin believing that if he had turned himself in a fair trial would never have occurred, especially not without Danielle bringing him to the Institute for protection and help. Danielle has little to say, but the two rivals seem to stand strong together on this issue.
Meanwhile, Laurie and Josh have their first date...at the arcade.
Yeah, really.
Laurie tries to make conversation while Josh plays Captain American until he realizes how rude he's been. Some jerks there bring on that mutie mess until Rahne shows up behind them, in half-wolf form. Josh thinks she's sabatoging, but Rahne is there to tell them that Kevin's in trouble.
At the Grind Stone (where Nori works), Dani and Justin Pierce have a conversation over a cup of joe about Kevin. Nori overhears and the New Mutants soon gather up to see what the FBI is up to.
Sofia uses her powers to eavesdrop on their conversations and David absorbs FBI procedures as they form their plan. David of course is weary of taking on the FBI, but Sofia is adamant they do this. Sofia tries to lift Kevin above the school gates while Surge provides a distraction, but the kids are caught. Danielle scolds them and David tries to calm down a very angry Sofia, but she's piiiiiissed.
The next day, the halls of the Institute are all talking about Kevin. At lunch time, the brooding guy in black decides to sit alone and ignores the New Mutants. Julian and Cessily feel bad for the kid, and Julian has a Magneto moment on top of the cafeteria table, proclaiming that everyone whose powers have gone wrong or caused trouble could "be next".
Julian Keller: "This is the place we go to be safe. They want to take one of us away and all you can do is gossip.
You're terrible mutants. You're not fit to be called Homo Superior."
The New Mutants all have mixed reactions to Julian's impassioned speech.
Prodigy: "Wow, who knew Julian had it in him?"
Elixir: "I think he makes a lot of sense."
Wind Dancer: "Does that spech remind anyone else of speeches made right before someone tried to wipe out humanity?"
However...I heard this scene had misplaced speech bubbles, so that might not be right (especially knowing what happens next).
Elsewhere, Danielle tells Kevin he needs to turn himself in so they can quickly resolve all of this. Kevin doesn't understand and says he hates Dani. The students watch as Agent Pierce takes Kevin away.
The Hellions plan to rescue Kevin, but Icarus doesn't want to have anything to do with it. The let him leave because...he just has wings and sings, and Julian knows where they can get some "extra firepower".
Julian knocks on Sofia's door with that charming "hey, beautiful" crap. LOL.
Hellion: "Me and the Hellions. We're going to take Kevin back from the F.B.I.
By force.
So how about it, Sofia...you in?"
Wind Dancer: "...yes...I am in."
LOL I miss her accent.
Anyway, to be concluded!!!

Review:
Big step up from last issue. Michael Ryan makes a decent debut to the series, but I am not at all crazy about his art, especially how he draws Dani's hair things. Not cute.
Particularly, I really enjoyed this because I like Sofia's rebel streak. I like seeing her go against her team for what she thinks is right and really being guided by her emotions. My girl with the Hellions was dreamy for me.
I also enjoyed how Kevin's situation was handled. I liked seeing Emma take a stand the way she did as well as Julian stand up for Kevin and put it into perspective for the other students. That was cool. I think this is the point where I really started to like Julian and started seeing a lot in his character that I didn't see before.

As much as I loved their writing, at the time, I would have to disagree.
Their New X-Men weren't going anywhere. They never would have.
It was too much of a soap opera for them to develop as what they really were. As X-Men.
Sure, as people -- as teenagers -- they were progressing, and it was interesting.
But, as X-Men, it was C&C that made them memorable.
It was C&C that defined them.
And, again, I say this as one of the many people who initially took the creative team change as a slap in the face. I loved DeFilippis and Weir.

Hmmm...I dunno if everyone would agree with that, I think a lot of their hardcore fans probably already migrated since their target audience was pretty specific and perhaps a bit different than what the book became.
For me, I would say they are the definitive writers for half the cast, while Chris Yost and Craig Kyle have it down for the other half.

"Battle Lines"
Written by: Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir
Pencils by: Michael Ryan
Edited by: Mike Marts
Surge walks in her room, happy to find that Sooraya isnt there, calling her "you big freak" under her breath. She begins to put her music on, but hears a tapping at her window. Its Icarus!
Cut to Laurie's favorite spot by Breakstone Lake. She's skipping stones. We see her here a few times in the series when she's upset. Icarus finds her, and tells the other New Mutants where she is. They're having a New Mutants meeting.
Laurie: "New Mutants...? But you're a Hellion"
Jay: "Don't remind me."
Jay explains the situation to everyone. That Hellion is leading his squad into a direct battle with the FBI. Surge offers to race down there and stop them, but David wants Sofia to be with them before they make any decision. Unfortunately, that wont happen. Sofia is with the Hellions now…
Sofia flies next to Julian as he carries the rest of the squad on a telekinetic disc. They chat. Sofia wants to lead one day, but she says because her squad didnt trust her, she didnt trust herself. She asks what Julian's plan is. If they cant sneak him away quietly, they'll take out the FBI.
At school, Elixir runs to Rahne for another team mate, much to Laurie's displeasure. She says she wont come, so Elixir just asks her to not tell the faculty what they're up to.
At the train station downtown, Agent Pierce tries to talk with Kevin. He tries to get Kevin to trust him. Its not working. He takes the cuffs off Kevin, who then goes to the bathroom to try and climb out a window. But at that moment, Mercury comes in through the window! Her powers allow her to cling to solid surfaces like Nightcrawlers, so she liquifies herself, and crawls down the wall through the window to talk with Kevin. When she comes out, Hellion is about to blow up the wall and snag Kevin. He tells everyone to get ready to take out any agents they see.
Prodigy: "See, now that's a really bad plan..."
Prodigy: "...You guys are making a huge mistake and we have to stop you."
Kevin watches from the bathroom window and is shocked to see that his squad isnt helping break him out. Sofia is a little confused as well. But Julian is just happy he gets to fight the New Mutants.
At that time, back at the school, Dani tells Emma and Cyke that she got Evangeline Whedon to be Kevin's lawyer. Emma says she should just telepathically control the judge into letting Kevin go. Just then, Rahne comes in to tell the staff something important...
Back at the station, Elixir pounces on Hellion and starts punching him before he can use his TK. Rockslide shoots his hand at Elixir, but misses. Because he lost his hand, he starts to cry...
Rockslide: "Aw..No...My hand... I missed. Now I have no hand... I dont -sniff- know why -sob- this is getting me so upset. -sob!-"
Its because of Laurie's pheromones. She's keeping Santo out of the fight.
Wind Dancer and Prodigy square off. Sofia also starts to cry cus she's just so confused. She wanted to help Kevin, but the only one who knew how was Julian, so she went along.
Prodigy: "You're not a bad leader for seeing that this situation is screwed up. Julian's a bad leader because he thinks its simple."
Tag tried to take David out of the fight, but Icarus zoomed by, picked him up, and deposited him high up in a tree.
Dust and Surge square off. Surge zaps Dust, but Dust changes into sand form and dodges.
Dust: "Noriko, please. I do not wish to fight you."
Surge: "But youre willing to fight the FBI Sooraya? "
Dust: "I do not want to, but Julian is out leader. "
Surge: "You wear the burqa because youre told to. You come down here because Julian told you to. You make me sick! Do you always do what you're told?!"
Then, for the first time, Mercury morphs one of her arms into a scythe. She threatens to hurt Josh if he doesnt get off Julian. That was enough of a distraction to let Julian catch his breath. Hellion sends Elixir flying, but Wind Dancer catches him. Then she tells David to lead the team and defeat the Hellions.
http://image.comicvine.com:8000/item/41000/40537/87492-renascence_400.jpg
David uses logic to beat the bad guys! He tells Wind Dancer and Surge to shift targets. Nori needs to back off Dust, this fight isnt personal. Wind Dancer takes out Dust. Sand has no chance against wind.
http://image.comicvine.com:8000/item/41000/40537/52636-renascence_400.jpg
Surge then switches to Mercury. Metal has no chance against electricity.
Julian then squares off against David. He wants to finish this leader to leader.
Prodigy: "Tempting. But a good leader knows how to delegate."
http://image.comicvine.com:8000/item/41000/40454/61461-hellion_400.jpg
The FBI hear the wind outside and go to check it out. Dani arrives just in time so that they dont see the teenage mutant fighting morons outside. Kevin realizes his friends arent going to save him, and gets depressed again.
The New Mutants won the fight, but everyone's in big trouble. At that moment, Cyke, Emma, and Rahne are standing there, and they do not look happy. Emma calls her squad idiots, and takes them back. Cyke commends the New Mutants for stoping the Hellions, but he still says they should have come to the faculty first.
Back at the school, Nori is running around looking for Sooraya. Sofia blew Sooraya all the back to the school from the train station, so she landed at school NAKED! So Nori gives her the burqa back. Sooray says thank you, and for a second thinks that they're bonding. But Nori shoots her down, saying she only did it because Jay told her to.
Nori: "I dont get you. You broke the law because Julian said so, but you wont make the run back to the dorm. "
Sooraya: "And you would have?"
Nori: "Absolutely. Even without my super speed. Its my body. All they can do is look. Let them. "
Dust: "And that is why I understand you as little as you understand me."
At Kevin's trial, all the charges are dismissed. Dani assumes Emma was messing with the minds of the judge and lawyers, but she swears she didnt. Kevin is free! But he still hates Dani and Agent Pierce, even though the whole reason he isnt in jail right now is because Agent Pierce saved his butt. Agent Pierce gets flirty with Dani, and then says good bye.
Back at school, Kevin and Jay switch squads. Then its time for the New Mutants' first Danger Room session after their detention. Sofia and David decide to lead the team together. After all, the old New Mutants had two co-leaders. Why shouldnt they? Sofia is the heart, and David is the brains. It works.
The issue ends with Elixir and Rahne fighting, because she told on them. Elixir's peeved, but Rahne cant seem to beat it into his head that she's faculty and he's a student. Then they make out.

Review:
Very good issue. I loved how the New Mutants won the fight. Not because I dislike the Hellions, but because its clear that the Hellions are better equiped to fight than the New Mutants are. They have lots of offensive powers, while the New Mutants dont. But the New Mutants won this battle fair and square.
And the fight scene was pretty good too. I liked it alot. Lots of fun power use.
I love Michael Ryan's art. The kids look like kids, and the adults look like adults. Alot of artists have problems with that, where one always looks like the other. The action sequences were great as well. We didnt get any Bachalo or Ramos "huh?" panels.
Elixir and Rahne still have their thing going, which is getting kinda boring.
All in all, I liked this ish alot. Its basically a fight scene, but its a really good fight scene.

That was so dumb. I think that I through up.

I thought it was a bit of a cop-out too... Sofia basically staying a leader, but David really taking over. "everyone listen to David!" When I look back at Academy X, I never think of Sofia as one of the squad leaders... even if she had the title, David led that squad.

I didn't dislike this issue but I wished there was more dramaz! For example, I dislike how quickly Sofia had a change of heart--I know its the nature of her character (and its a nature I relate to and love), but I would've liked to see her struggle with her decisions more than simply ride with the Hellions then David says a few words and she's changed her mind again.
Like I said, my main complaint is that I wish "Choosing Sides" was more drastic. They basically switched one squad's peripheral member (Icarus) with the other squad's outsider (Kevin) and in the end, it kinda worked out for everybody rather easily.
In Noriko versus Sooraya, I did move slightly into Nori's corner because I could feel that frustration with Sooraya not taking a stand for herself. But its a culture clash, and I like how its presented.
P.P.S. This is how Mercury's powers should work. I loved seeing her turn into a puddle and form a scythe and whatever. BOOOO to stretching her neck and torso lol.

But later down the line, Sofia did really become a leader. She would take over for strategic duties sometimes. After she learned how to do the job, she was pretty good at it.
But yeah, for all intents and purposes, David was squad leader.

But on some level, Sofia knew what the Hellions were doing was wrong. She just felt like she needed to do SOMETHING. So she did the wrong thing. Thats why as soon as David got there, yeah, she was blowing wind gusts all over him, but she was talking with him too. Them talking was more Sofia explaining herself than David lecturing her.

Yeah. Alot of it was set up for the new readers who jumped on. But I think alot of stuff was editorally mandated as well. Like the slow beginning, the lack of action, and I think thats why Icarus and Dust joined the cast as well.

I agree!! N&C were awesome with creative power use. I dont think many people know that Mercury can walk on walls like Nightcrawler and stuff. She did it here, and she did it when clinging to the bottom of the table in issue #3.

I believe the line-ups were supposed to be:
New Mutants: Sofia, David, Laurie, Nori, Josh, Kevin
Hellions: Julian, Cessily, Brian, Santo, Sooraya, Dallas
Therefore the swap would of been Kevin <> Sooraya. But editorial mandated that they include Jay Guthrie, so they took out Dallas. And that's why on the cover of issue #1 of NXM, Sooraya is there and not Jay or Kevin. Because the editorial change happened after the cover was done.

I thought that was the issue with the squads, but I wasn't sure, thanks! I was wondering why Sooraya was on the cover. I'm glad she stayed with the hellions, though. Stupid Guthrie kid. I wish Dallas would have been a main character.

No, he couldnt have been. Because he was intended to die, remember? He was supposed to die in issue #7 (I think) of New Mutants, but then the storyline was scrapped at the last minute. So he was alive, but they had no plots for him. He was just an extra familiar background character the whole time. Until C&C came in, that is.

Thanks for the info Mr. E!!!
Even before Sooraya, I believe there were supposed to be 5-person squads (which would've been more manageable IMO).
Anyway, if LeFeeFee had done the switcharoo it would have ended with:
New Mutants
Prodigy (leader)
Elixir / Wither (I swizaair the two could not coexist peacefully; the odd man out will just have to deal with being on Tantra's squad)
Dust
Surge
Wallflower
Hellions
Hellion
Rockslide
Wind Dancer
Tag
Mercury
I would tell editorial no!no!no! to Joshua Jay Abraham Guthrie.

Not true. By the time we wrote Academy X, the change to the story had already played out. We had plans for Victor. But we had to try to keep the focus on the two rival squads at the start.
Our original plan was to create 6 person squads. We'd been told we could add one of Morrison's students to the regular cast, so we asked for Dust.
The original idea was the New Mutants to be:
Prodigy
Elixir
Wind Dancer
Wallflower
Surge
Wither
And the Hellions to be:
Hellion
Rockslide
Tag
Mercury
Dust
Specter
And Wither and Dust would have swapped squads at the end of Choosing Sides
Then right before we started writing, we were asked to work Jay into the book, and to make him a New Mutant.
[this was when he was Josh Guthrie, and we had to fight to rename him Jay so we wouldn't have 2 Joshes on a 6 person squad. Then we had to quell the theories that he was a healer - like our Josh was. So we focused him on his flight and immortality, and chose Icarus as a codename to make sure the focus stayed on the wings]
We pointed out that with him and Dust joining, even with Wither leaving, it'd leave the New Mutants as a 7 person squad.
There was talk of making all squads 7 members, but they decided to stick with 6 and keep Dust a Hellion.
So, Jay was added to the Hellions and the story was reworked so he switched sides instead of Sooraya.
That meant cutting Specter.
Then, after House Of M, our original plan was to cut the number of mutant kids down to 3 (possibly 4) squads, each squad 7 people. X-23 would be added to the New Mutants, and Specter to the Hellions.
Only 7 other mutant teens would exist in the universe, most from the old roster at the mansion (we would have added any other mutant teens able and willing to seek out the school to the final squad). That extra squad was going to include Victor, who was, for us at that point, an untouchable character - we wanted to keep him alive.
So Specter was to be added to the Hellions mini, to set up his friendship with the characters. And he'd join post-HOM
But then we were asked not to include him in the mini, and later found out why - we'd been cut from the book, and the Hellions squad was going to cease to exist after HOM, so why set up changes like that?
That's the scoop on our intended rosters and how they changed over time.
Hope that helps.

Man I wish you guys had had more time. I loved the direction you were going. Now Surge, Prodigy, Wind Dancer, and Elixir are all delegated to obscurity. :frown: Well, WD is in New Mutants (hardly the same character) and Elixir might be showing up in X-Force. But you know what I mean.

Interesting info. I would have love to see Specter using his shadow powers in action. At least he didn't get killed in C&C's run of New X-Men. If he did still had his powers he would make an awesome New X-Men member.
And I thought Wither switching place with Icarus instead of Dust was much better since Wither and Dust didn't seem like the New Mutants type.
Though I wonder what would have happen to Wither if DeFilippis was still writing New X-Men instead of C&C? I know C&C say they have some type of plan with Wither & Selene(Though it'll be forever before I find what it is...), I'm curious on what would have DeFilippis done with Kevin.
Also quick question for Nunzio DeFilippis: Have you checked out both Chris & Craig's run on New X-Men and Guggenheim's Young X-Men?
So we focused him on his flight and immortality, and chose Icarus as a codename to make sure the focus stayed on the wings
Immortality? Did Icarus have that?

Immortality? Did Icarus have that?
As much as any healing factor allows its owners to be immortal. He has the same healing blood that Warren has. So all his wounds heal. He broke his neck in the "Haunted" arc, but healed after he landed on the floor.
So while "immortality" wasnt one of his powers, he was kinda immortal because of his healing blood.
And thanks for stopping by Nunzio!

It is a cold autumn day in Upstate New York (where I'm from! Thats my favorite time of year. Anyway...). A young Kim Alleyne arrives at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning to visit her older brother David. The scene has a definite "Harry Potter" feel to it. We see students flying above the school "dueling" with each other. Kim is in awe. David introduces her to everyone, and she LOVES mutants. Jay's wings are awesome, Josh's skin is sooo cool, and Surge has robot arms!
They start a brief tour of the place, and we see Gambit teaching a projectile class. Any student with projectile-esque powers should be there to practice hitting ranged targets. We see Rockslide, Quill and a few other students there. Surge runs to catch up, and we see the ghostly imprint of a small hand against a window on the second floor of the mansion. The ghost doesnt sound pleased with the New Mutants...
Kim goes to sit in on David's classes with him. We see Anole and Veiny Kid in the seats around David and Kim. Drama class? LAME. Kim alludes to the fact that David might be crushing on Dani, but she really only cares about going to cool classes, like Sofia's flying class. But just then, Nightcrawler BAMFs! into the room onto his potium. NOW Kim thinks drama class is cool!
Icarus is chilling in his room. He has his shirt off. He's soooo sexy. Anyhoo, we see the scar over his heart from when he tried to kill himself in "She Lies With Angels". He looks longingly at a picture of Julia Cabot next to his bed, and turns away to get dressed. When he turns back, the picture is somehow lying on his bed.. when he goes for a closer look... it cracks right in front of him!! WTF?!?!
Over to Chem Class, Josh and Laurie are sitting next to each other and whispering. ANOTHER Veiny Kid sits right behind them (I think the two Veiny Kids are twins. One of them has light skin and red hair, and the other has red skin and blueish black hair). Loa sits across the row from the red skinned Veiny Kid. She looks hot. Wither sits in front of Loa, and Julian sits in front of Laurie.
Rahne is assisting Dr. McCoy, and forming teams for the lab assignment. She puts Laurie with Kevin, and Josh with Phoebe Cuckoo. Wither and Elixir make eye contact, and Kevin looks smug. Elixir is pissed with Rahne for pairing Laurie with Kevin. She did so because Josh and Laurie talked all throughout Dr. McCoy's class. Then they make out.
Over at lunch, the New Mutants are sitting together. At the table behind them is Dryad, Preview, and some other students. Jay isnt with the group though. He's brooding on top of the backet ball hoop. Nori goes to see whats up, and he explains about what happened with Julia's photo, and its just kinda freaking him out. And bringing up bad memories... Nori asks what the scar on his chest is, and he explained that he tried to kill himself. Jay says he felt like he lost everything, and Nori wouldnt understand. Nori starts to cry, and runs off, reminding Jay that he still has "like twenty brothers and sisters and a mother who loves him". Yeah, he lost everything...
Next, we see Nori's home for the first time. She calls home and asks to speak with her younger brother, Keitaro. Her mother is just super relieved to hear that Nori is in a safe place, and learning to control her powers. But daddy just showed up... and he's pissed. He rips the phone out of her mother's hands and hangs up on Nori.
Later, Laurie is walking to work on her lab project with Kevin. In the hallway we see Laurie, Sofia, Kevin, Julian, Santo, and red Veiny Kid. Woah. Hold the phone. This Veiny Kid looks kinda feminine. Could it be a veiny girl? And her veins dont look so much like veins... more like the same time of lines that Indra used to have. WOAH! Could we have finally found Indra's long lost little sister?? Maybe? She even has the same red diamond on her forehead that Indra has. Anyhoo, back to the story.
The ghost is watching the students in the hallway. He follows Kevin into the lab. Laurie and Kevin have an awkward talk about Josh. Laurie says she likes Kevin, but Kevin just keeps bringing up her boyfriend, Josh. But Laurie says theyre not boyfriend and girlfriend... yet. Kevin's not sure if they can be friends if those two are going out.
They brush it aside for the moment, because they need to get to work. But wait, the beaker they just set up is now missing... but wait, what just SHATTERED across the room?? And who just wrote the words "LEAVE NOW" on the chalk board??? Cool note, the panels of Laurie and Kevin talking are shown from the ghost's point of view.

Outside, David explains to Kim what the Danger Room is all about. Kim wishes she was a mutant, that way she could go to a cool school and have powers and have friends with green skin too. David agrees that Xavier's is a really cool place, but he does NOT want his sister to be a mutant. As they walk inside, they run into Julian playing basket ball with... holy crap, the red veiny person. This character is everywhere! But now he's a guy again... I am just confused here. Michael Ryan? A little clarification please? Anyway, Julian teases David, asking if Kim is his girlfriend and calling him Brain Boy.
Kim: "My brother hates you."
David: "Kim..."
Julian: "Yeah, well, the feeling's mutual, kid."
The Alleynes walk to Dani and Shan's office (aww, they share). Kim tries to tell Dani that David has a crush on her, and they ask about letting Kim go to the New Mutants' danger room sesh later on.
Over in Surge's room, Nori is listening to Eminem and crying. She's looking at a picture of her family from before she ran away. In it, her father is quite stern, her mother is gently smiling, and Nori and Keitaro are really happy, hugging each other. Icarus comes in, already wearing his uniform, and asks how Nori's feeling. She's just sad cus Jay still has his family, and Nori doesnt anymore. But Jay assures her that he knows he has his family, and he is grateful. Then they notice that Nori's room is a disaster. Everything is a mess, and things have been torn up and destroyed. Something weird is going on here... Beeteedubz, Nori has a Totoro poster behind her bed, hahahaha.
In the Danger Room, the group discusses the possibility of Xavier's being haunted. Kim just thinks that it ups the cool-factor of this school. But the others are getting kinda nervous... David of course, doesnt believe in ghosts.
The Danger Room sesh is all about creative power use. Each team member is facing something they cant beat. Prodigy is surrounded by robotic fighters, but he cant absorb their skills cus theyre robots. Wallflower is trapped in a cage, being attacked by a robot with no olfactory senses, so her pheromones wont work on him. Wind Dancer is being attacked by a lime-green amorphous blob that is too sticky to be blown off. Surge is trapped in a circuit that is too powerful for her to break out of. Soon she'll overload. Icarus is being held down by gusts of wind that are too powerful for him to break out of. And Elixir... just kinda stands around.
Prodigy coordinates everything. He tells Elixir to heal the blob attacking Wind Dancer, because Dani mentioned that it was organic. It works! The blob must be a virus or bacteria or something. Wind Dancer then bends the winds holding down Icarus. Icarus in turn frees Wallflower by singing to her cage (kinda). Wallflower releases some calming pheromones to Surge who was losing control of herself. Now that Surge can control herself, she breaks free of the circuit and zaps all the guys attacking Prodigy.
Now that the exercise is over, Dani goes down to check on everyone, but tells Kim to stay on the observation deck, just to be safe. Kim is bummed, but then the ghost appears to her! Its a little boy who tells her to "Leave Now While You Can!" Kim then runs down to the Danger Room to announce to everyone, she's a mutant!!!

Review:
Overall, I was a fan. Lots of different stuff going on here. Josh and Rahne are still doing their thing (which I dont like). The ghost is attacking people (there's a pattern here... can you figure it out?). Kim is a typical obnoxious teenager, but its cute to see that she and David are close. I felt really bad for Nori during this whole issue. She misses her younger brother so much, but her father wont allow her to speak with him (or even call the house back again). And she's surrounded by David and his little sibling, and Jay who doesnt appreciate all the sibs that he's got.
Sofia takes a backseat during this issue, which is sad. So do most of the hellions. We really only see Kevin, and Julian for a little bit.
Anyhoo, I enjoyed it. It isnt "scary" persay, but this is just the set up ish. More ghost drama awaits us in the next ish!

Also quick question for Nunzio DeFilippis: Have you checked out both Chris & Craig's run on New X-Men and Guggenheim's Young X-Men?
Yes.
I liked C & C's run, even if I was a little sad that some of the kids died and others lost their powers.
It was a very different book, though, and could have benefited from a new #1, both to help them get higher sales and also to avoid them having to be compared to our run (both favorably from many fans and unfavorably from a handful of loyalists).
As for Young X-Men, I'm waiting to see how it shapes up. I'm a fan - I like Marc's writing. But I'm still not sure what I think about the stuff with Dani and Shan though.
Immortality? Did Icarus have that?
In Chuck Austen's storyline, when Julia died, Jay (then named Josh) tried to kill himself to be with her, and he kept impaling himself in the heart and it kept healing. He couldn't die.
In our book, we expanded on that. When the ghost overloaded the Danger Room, Jay's neck was snapped and that didn't kill him either.
He has the same healing blood that Warren has.
Not in our book. Warren's blood healed others. Jay's did not. All Jay could do was recover from any injury, fatal or otherwise. He could not heal anyone else.
This was a huge thing for us, because we had a healer named Josh (created before Austen created his take on Josh Guthrie) and when we were asked to take on this character, we had to make it clear - he may have once been named Josh, but he was never a healer.
Thank you, Nunzio! I really liked what we saw of Specter, I wish he was used. Did they ask you to cut him in particular, or did you make that dicision yourselves?
Our call. We knew we were gonna keep Julian and Cessily and that Kevin was going to join. So once Dust was supposed to stay, it was down to Santo, Brian or Dallas. We opted for Santo and Brian.
Thanks for stopping by, it's much appreciated. Sorry if this has been asked already but were there any plans for Mr.Morrison's other characters like the the Cuckoos, Martha or Ernest?
When we got the Hellions mini, our goal was to do a mini or maybe an arc for each of the other defined squads - the Corsairs, the Paragons and Alpha Squadron.
The Corsairs mini/arc was gonna be all about the origin of the Cuckoos.
But then we left the book, and since then, much has been done with them that makes our (very preliminary) ideas moot.
We had no plans for Ernst. At the time we were writing, we were operating under Grant's last issue, which suggested Ernst was Cassandra Nova. That has since been retconned by Joss Whedon.
But at the time, we had no Cassandra Nova plans, so we didn't use Ernst.
We had no definite Martha plans, but she likely would have turned up in some small capacity down the line. We were fans of Grant's run, and we both love to service continuity in small ways, to make the books feel connected.

I was pretty confused about that. I didnt entirely understand Austen's mutant blood-lines story. I thought Icarus and Angel had the same powers because they came from the same blood-line, or something like that.

Hey thanks Nunzio for answering our questions and Ricky for the summary!
Which kinda gives leeway to my question--it was REALLY nice to see some insight in what makes Nori so cranky. Did you guys have any further plans for Nori's family? I think that's been her most endearing moment ever and I really would've liked to meet her brother.
And this issue made me think...hey, Jay's not *that* bad. I think my bad first impression of him during Chuck's run and in Choosing Sides where he did the singing thing and the bad last impression where he so stupidly died kinda lingered; I do like the nice guys. He was just as much the heart of the team as Sofia was but did it on the down-low.
Also Nunzio, what do you think about Sofia and her "Renascence" persona? What do you think of her voice? There are times where I appreciate it, but sometimes it feels *so* off without her accent.
ALSO, Sofia as a Hellion--do you think it could have ever worked?

Jay's approval ratings are Goin' THRU DA ROOF!!
This is making me increibly happy.
He was one of my favourite NXM'ers.
And it made me sad.
What did Nunzio think about Icarus' character route?
And his resurrection as archangel. Lawl.

Haunted:2 of 3
Written by: Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir

Still in the Danger Room, Kim tries to convince the New Mutants and Dani that she is a mutant. She can talk to dead people! Surge doesnt believe it, but Dani's Valkyrie powers are working... she can sense it: there IS someone in the observation deck.... and he's definitely not among the living.
Suddenly, a ghostly hand switches off the safety protocols! Magneto attacks!!
He causes lots of metal schrapnel and beams to fall over the place. Elixir dives to push Laurie out of the way of a huge falling piece of metal, but he's knocked out as it lands on his head/neck (at least this time it was on panel! ). Next, Magneto controls Surge's metal gauntlets, and causes her to attack David. Sofia tries to distract Magneto, but he quickly disposes of her as well.
Jay flies above to get his helmet off, so that Dani can cause an illusion. Magneto sends his helmet up at Jay, and in the ensuing chaos, Jay breaks his neck and falls to the floor. Then, its back to Surge's gauntlets. He makes her pull in too much energy so that she overloads. Dani then begins to make an illusion of Xavier yelling at Magneto, but just in time, Karma shows up and turns the Danger Room off.
The kids all go to the Infirmary, and everyone is ok. Rahne runs in to check on Josh... oh, and the others too, yeah, the others too. David tells Cyke and Emma about what happened, and also mentions his sister. They said they'd check to see if she was a mutant or not.
The kids then go for a late dinner in the cafeteria. They talk about the hauntedness of the school, and how freaked out they are. Oh, and Sofia <3s Julian, that too. Laurie and Josh plan on a date. Tomorrow night they're going to go to Laurie's home so her mom can cook them dinner. Kim and Nori don't get along. Kim said that David calls Nori obnoxious at home. Awkward...
Kevin walks over to see if Laurie is alright. He's worried about her, because the ghost seems to be following her. Josh picks a fight with him, and Kevin threatens to kill Josh. Only Kim notices during the verbal exchange that their table has mysteriously vanished...
CRASH! The table falls on the group from above. Surge dives to save Kim. Everyone is ok. David stares at Julian from across the room who says "What? I didnt do it.".
Later in Cyke's office, Scott is interviewing Julian. He thinks this is all Julian messing with the New Mutants. Basically, Cyclops totally kicks Julian's butt in this talk, and tells them that if anything else happens to the New Mutants, Julian is getting in trouble for it.
Cyclops: "It's getting near curfew. Get some sleep."
Julian: "Right. Sleep in a haunted house. That's gonna happen."
All the kids are sleeping in their rooms and talking about the ghost. Josh keeps bugging David about it, who just wants to sleep. Laurie is super freaked, but Sofia and Kim are excited about finding out the ghost's secret. Nori is sad and looks at the picture of her family again. Jay refuses to sleep in his room now, and broods outside on the roof... Cute emo scene.
The next day, the kids all discuss the ghost, and do research on communicating with the dead. Nori is bugged that Kim doesnt like her. They realized that there was a reason the ghost chose Magneto to attack the group in the Danger Room: He must have died when Xorneto attacked the school. So David goes into the computer system, and looks at the student rosters from before and after the attack. They decide to go the cemetary to check the names on the headstones and try and match them with students who no longer go to the school.
They go to the cemetary (Laurie and Josh are not there, they're on their date) and the ghost appears again! Surge offers her coat to him (he looks cold) but he just teleports them away! Meanwhile, Dani figures out who the ghost is!

The Ghost!
Review:
The plot thickens! I liked this issue. The plot is moving along with the ghost plot as we eliminate suspects and close in on who the ghost is. Nice action sequence in the beginning. I loved the pacing of this ish: the different panels of all the kids in their rooms at night, or as they walk down the halls was very nice. Michael Ryan's art was very pretty. Everything was nice and creepy, and all the people looked great. Magneto in particular looked pretty badass.

Dang, I completely missed the first Haunted issue review. This was a great arc, lots of good Nori. She saves Kim even though Kim doesn't like her, take that Surge haters!
When I read this, I was expecting more consequences from the Magneto beat-down, glad everyone was OK though.
I was loving everyone blaming Hellion!

Haunted: 3 of 3

The kids pop up above a lake and are going to fall in! Jay saves Kim and Sofia quickly tries to save David. But David, being the smart gentleman he is, tells her to save Nori insted (since water and electricity don't mix). Right before David makes the big splash, he is frozen in mid air. Who is it? Julian, of course!
So after an exchange of words (some nicer than others), the kids continue to the graveyard.
Meanwhile, Laurie and Josh's date is going along smoothly. They've just finished eating a not-so-delicious home cooked meal made my Laurie's mom, Gail. Laurie starts to tell Josh about how she's never met her dad, and doesn't even know his name, but they are interrupted by desert.
Back at the graveyard, the kids are found by Dani and Shan. They've been worried sick, also they know who the mystery ghost is! It is Jeffrey Garrett, a student created by Chris Claremont in X-Treme X-Men. His power was to teleport himself or others. He was supposed to teleport out of the institute during Magneto's attack, but was not able to get out in time.
Back over to Josh and Laurie now. He walked her to the dorms and then HE KISSED HER!
http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/4226/137297-55627-wallflower.jpg
Josh then bumps into Rahne who is happy that his date went well. He tries to tell her that it wasn't a date, but she disagrees a reconfirms their breakup (even though he doesn't believe her).
Josh: "It doesn't affect us"
Rahne: "Josh, there is no "us". It's over"
Josh: "Yeah, I've heard this song before."
But guess who overheard this little exchange? No not Gossip Girl, it was Kevin, who has a major crush on Laurie. Looks like this love triangle has added a point!
The next morning.
David is getting ready for the his classes, but Josh has decided to skip the day. Outside, David runs into Nori who is sad that Kim doesn't like her. David reassures her that she's just a kid, but then comments that she was acting weird towards Jeffrey's ghost... offering her jacket and acting protective. She tells him about when she called her house. She wanted to talk to her little brother, but her father didn't let her and hung up. David feels sorry for her and promises that he'll make Kim like Nori.
That afternoon.
Dani comes into Josh's room and asks why he skipped all of the day's classes. She tells him that if anything is bothering him, that he can tell her. She is his legal guardian, after all.
New York city.
Emma Frost has taken Kevin to see a popular psychologist. DR. SEAN GARRISON!
That night.
In another attempt to contact Jeffrey Garrett, Sofia and the kids decide to hold a séance. They all agree except Jay, who is still angry about the photo incident. Since they are short 1 member, Julian shows up and takes Jay's spot. Cue: cute banter between Sofia and Julian.
http://i43.tinypic.com/fw0qwg.jpg
Well, the séance is effective and Jeffrey Garrett shows up. But since he being all whiny and emo, Nori puts him in his place.
Nori: Jeffrey, just shut up! Stop scaring her. Stop scaring all of us. We're just trying to talk to you. So stop acting like a baby. Grow up and...
Jeffrey: I can't grow up... I'm dead.
Jeffrey then proceeds to apologize to everyone. Jay shows up, feeling bad about what he said. All is right again.
The next day.
Kim is in the library when David shows up to talk to her. It turns out that she isn't really a mutant. David is happy because she's not in any kind of danger because of it. Then they go off to watch Sofia's flying class.
Jeffrey and Nori have made up and become friends. She acts like an older sister to him now, kinda replacing the brother that she "lost". Jeffrey is put into the junior class, mentored by Shan.
The End.

Review
I thought this issue was LONG. It really packs in a lot of story into a regular sized issue.
I liked the foreshadowing of Sean Garrison, when Laurie was talking about how she's never met him (or wants to meet him), then we see that he's around and even in the same city! I loved Noriko/Jeffrey's relationship, it was really fun to see her find a surrogate younger brother... because Kim didn't exactly like her. I'm glad that Josh/Rahne is officially over. His relationship with Laurie is much better and she's a lot happier with him.
The art in this issue is great. Carlo Pagulayan has a bit of Michael Ryan's style, but it looks more detailed. The colouring is also great, Jeffrey's power signature is really vibrant and Elixir's skin has a nice shine.

HMMM...I really didn't like the Haunted arc; I thought the concept was just really lame and Jeffrey Garrett was kinda WTF I don't care.
BUT
this issue was drawn fabulously by Carlo Pagulayan, who I really wish stayed on and replaced Michael Ryan whose pencils never impressed me (I've only ever liked his work on Mystique).
PLUS
there were some really cute moments. Laurie was a cutie patootie, Sofia and Julian's banter was fun as was Sofia...in general. And Surge was sweet! Awww, how nice.
SO
characters were fun
story was not.
GOOD JOB P. Fiddy!

I liked the Haunted arc, mostly because it had Karma, but I like it the least of Academy-X. Jeffrey Garret was a weird suprise, because I never thought I'd see him again. It was kind of nice to have him there. But really Jeffrey, we know you're a ghost. Suprises are always fun and great. Overall I liked it, especially Hellion's heroic moment with the lake. I liked Surge in this, too.
Wither has his moments. I like his doctor, he makes me laugh.

The issue opens with Scott Summers welcoming his new students to his new elective on Leadership and Tactics. Julian opens a class discussion with a dig at David:
http://i26.tinypic.com/2i1zj4j.jpg
Summers uses Julian's dislike of David to switch topics and chat about David's mutant power. According to Mr. Summers, David's sponge like attributes makes him the smartest man on the battlefield.
Julian counters with, "Yeah but it's borrowed smarts. As soon as they leave or they're shielded from telepathy, he's got nothing. Might as well be a paper-weight."
Despite protests from Sophia, Julian continues his assessment of David's uselessness, ending with: "What good's a part-time strategist who can't even defend himself?
As David mopes down the hallway, Sophia tries comforting him. Unfortunately Josh chooses this time to appear and mock David's glasses, sending him away from the group.
We next find David in Emma Frost’s room. David wants to understand why he can't keep his absorbed knowledge. After asking why he didn't choose his counselor for the job (he didn't her mental powers were enough), Frost agrees to assist him and discovers a "mental block" in David's head. She describes it as a sort of "defense mechanism." David wants to free himself of this "defense" but Frost worries how wise his choice will prove.
With that we jump into my very favorite Dr. Garrison's office. The good doctor and Kevin are discussing ways Kevin could use his powers to do good, settling on curing cancer. Once again, according to Dr. G, this brings us to Josh Foley. Josh and Laurie started dating last semester and naturally Kevin is jealous. But when he mentions her pheromone control Dr. Garrison gets interested. For his notes. Kevin reveals his knowledge of a glorious secret that could break up that pairing, and wonders if he should tell the world. If it makes him happy, Dr. is all for it.
Changing scenes, Danielle Moonstar is brushing her horse as none other than Emma Frost skips up. Frost and Moonstar agree to oversee David's decision making, but Moonstar demands the final say.
The strange bedfellows try to change his mind, but David won't hear it. He's tired of working backwards, and staying honest and useless. Moonstar's trust for David agrees with him, and Frost releases the block.
http://i31.tinypic.com/bhg6et.jpg
The Next Day: David tests out his powers, and now he knows everything the Beast kept securely in his head. He still won't skip class, though.
For the training session Wolverine has come to educate the youth on self-defense. David schools him with the newly mastered fighting styles of all of the X-men. After his display David makes a list of people he wants to brain leech and promises Josh he won't leave until Field Day.
David kicks ass, sacrifices the safety of his teammates, and wins the competition almost single handedly for the New Mutants. His teammates are shattered when he leaves forever, and even Moonstar takes a hit when David tells her about his crush and still says no.
The issue comes to a close with President David Alleyne's address to the nation: "I have found a working cure for Cancer, and another cure for AIDS."
But with that comes the heartbreaking news of Josh Foley's demise.

Golly, I miss this book.
This issue makes me sad. I want the Prodigy and Surge before New X-Men back. I like this issue a lot, I like Dr. Garrison a lot, too. But I can't wait until the next one. This arc might be my favorite, which is a little suprising for me, because now I almost can't stand Prodigy.

This riveting issue begins with a beautiful shot of the Whitehouse, and moves seamlessly from panel to panel as thirty-nine year old X-Man, Danielle Moonstar, enters the building eighteen years from now.
Moonstar has asked President Alleyne, whom she can still call David, for a meeting concerning troubling rumors about his actions. David is more concerned with the X-Men catching the terrorist group the Hellions however, and explains how he wants the X-Men to do it, and the X.S.E. to keep the peace. David asks Tessa, who can only be his smirking Vice President, to fetch the first lady, an apparent fan of Moonstar's.
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8637/yessssssssssssssssssg.jpg
David accesses his monitor and shows how his intense political skill has led to only a few countries remaining separate from the United States, "a percent employment, zero poverty, no disease, and no starvation. All accomplished without a single shot being fired."
Sadly, here comes the hard part. China has not been a good little country, and war is a no-win situation. With Jeffrey Garret David is going to eliminate China, scaring the other independent countries into joining the United States.
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/4282/ilikeyourcoat.jpg
Moonstar isn't too keen on the idea, but David's psi-shields block her powers with ease and his smart chair chains shackles her wrists. He hails Cyclops on a satellite, where the Hellions were said to be, and detonates a bomb, killing the entire team of X-Men. But David's tragic killings haven't stopped there; his chic stripped chair not only restrains traitors, but pumps them full of poisons.
President Alleyne: It really bothers me that you make me do this. That chair has been pumping you full of toxins. You maybe have five seconds left to live.
But this heart-wrenching scene isn't all about Moonstar's chair induced death; it's David's one chance to explain his feelings:
President Alleyne: I used to love you. You were my hero. I would have stayed at that school if you'd returned any of that feeling eighteen years ago.
A woman scorned indeed. But not all is well for Mr. President. Nori, the First Lady, did not respond well to Moonstar's corpse.

Issue 11 continued
A scene change to Los Angeles, California brightens up the mood with Jay Guthrie's concert. While the crowd chatters on about their love of mutants Nori sneaks in and abducts Jay. The duo makes it way to Colorado, becomes a trio with Barrett's new C. E. O. Sophia Mantega's addition and finally arrives early for Sophia's dinner with Laurie Collins.
The group's off panel discussion of David leaves Laurie in disbelief, but Nori casts away all doubt using her marriage as evidence of knowledge. Nori reveals her trust in David's no blood policy, but Laurie's mood swings to anger. Still furious over the death of Joshua Foley, she can't accept the good health of millions if it means the death of one, and desperate for revenge suggests they call in the Hellions.
We come upon the Hellions at their HQ, and the times have changed this squad. Kevin's got a sign wrecking temper and soul patch, Julian's gained some serious weight, Cessily and Santo are still pretty, but Tag has a new beard and hair style.
After a rough introduction,
Mercury: Oh, great. Here she is again. Stop pretending you agree with us, Laurie.
Wallflower: I do agree with you, Cessily. And I'm not alone.
Hellion: You know I usually cut you slack, Laurie, but you definitely shouldn't have brought your buddies.
turns into an argument about Sooraya's death:
Hellion: So now you want to work with us? Where were you ten years ago when Attorney General Alleyne got Sooraya executed?
Icarus: Hey, you're the one who lured her into the Hellions after Xavier's...
and Julian's failed marriage to Sophia, Noriko pulls the teams together for an attack on the Whitehouse.
Tag starts off the assault by running off security with his "tag." Before he can finish his transmission X.S.E. member Quill impales him with numerous spikes. Outside, the remaining Hellions are engaged by crazy Magma and Bishop's X.S.E. Kevin kills Magma with a touch to the head, and Julian mocks Bishop. The New Mutants use the distraction to slither unnoticed into the building. They don’t' get too far in before Sage attacks.
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/3519/shegoesfortheneck.jpg
But in this melee no one stays on top for long.
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/1110/shecheated.jpg
The remaining three rush into David's office. He's been prepared for Laurie's pheromones since Josh's death, and he swiftly improvises a defeat for Sophia by shooting her through his window. Defenseless and on the ground, Sophia is an easy target for Bishop, until Julian intercepts the bullets with his back. Storm electrocutes Cessily, who can only call desperately for Kevin, but Julian puts an end to the struggle with a destructive blast and we return to the Oval Office.
Nori shatters David's gun, a white light shines down upon Kevin, and David punches Laurie square in the face. Kevin attacks David only to be told of the power of the curing light. After releasing Kevin form his death grip, David moves on to Nori. Overloading her gauntlets she tells David she loves him and blows up the White House, killing them all.
This final chilling moment awakens David in Frost's office. David's confusion is remedied by Frost, as she explains what happened. Moonstar and Frost used their powers together to show David his greatest fear, the fear that was blocking his full abilities. David backs down and chooses not to release the mental block, a wise decision in the eyes of Frost and Moonstar.
David and Moonstar walk out, leading to an embarrassing conversation about his unrequited crush.
This monumental issue ends with David pouring his soul out to Josh, and Kevin knocking on the door for a talk. Kevin lets Josh in on his secret, and tells him to break up with Laurie.
Wither: Because if you don't, I'll tell the entire school what you and Miss Sinclair were doing last semester. And you'll both get kicked out!

Definitely wished N&C got to do more action stuff during their run. I liked the use of Sage, Prodigy was a crazy bad A, Sofia divorcing Julian, ANGEL SALVADORE...it was campy, actiony fun.

This issue begins with a shot of a destroyed city (a Danger Room hologram). Rahne is bragging to Dani about how the Paragons completed the mission excellently, but Dani is sure that the New Mutants can do it better. Dani gives them their instructions and the kids go into the Danger Room. BUT OH NO! It's the Hulk! Prodigy, having already seen this scene from his dream (issue 10), was shocked at first, but knew exactly what to do.
Surge attacked Hulk with her super-speed, using long range attacks (Prodigy made sure to give her the exact instructions). Icarus and Elixir were on evacuation and healing of civilians. Wind Dancer and Wallflower worked together to get calming pheromones to the Hulk, where he quieted down and turned human again. SUCCESS! The New Mutants were able to take down the Hulk simulation in 22 seconds, beating the Paragons score (which wasn't mentioned).
After the exercise, Rahne is talking with her squad in a classroom. This is the first costumed image of the Paragons: DJ, Preview, Pixie, Trance, Wolf Cub and Match. Preview says that she knew they were going to lose, she had seen it in a vision. Match, angered by this, calls her out for watching from the sidelines. Rahne then reminds Preview that her visions are not always set in stone, and that the future can be changed. Pixie still thinks it was very cool how they took down the Hulk and it was! (probably). Anyways, Rahne is still proud of her kids for saving so many (simulated) lives.
http://i32.tinypic.com/scc2l3.jpg
Outside, Josh is bragging about their successful exercise to Kevin. Nori tries to thank David for his advice in the Danger Room, but he blows her off... Jay and Nori think he's acting weird. Josh then asks Laurie out to celebrate, since she was the big ticket that brought down the Hulk. She's so happy with him! Kevin watches them leave, hand in hand, and goes to whine to Emma Frost (sniiiitch).
Salem Centre
Sofia is walking with Jay, thanking him for coming dancing with her.
Sofia: Thank you for coming with me, Jay. I miss dancing. I did it all the time back home in Venezuela.
Jay: No problem. I've always wanted to learn swing dancing. But why'd you pick me for your partner?
Sofia: Because neither David nor Josh is the dance-class kind of boy.
Jay: Yeah, good point. And I guess neither is Julian.
http://i31.tinypic.com/161l1lu.jpg
The Grind Stone
Meanwhile, David and Dani are talking at the Grind Stone cafe. He is telling her about how the Hulk simulation was the exact same one from his dream. Dani tells him that she already knew what the mission was and when his powers mixed with her's and Emma's, he recreated the mission inside his head. Rahne comes over to drop off coffees, but Dani excuses herself and leaves with Rahne back to the institute.
Scott and Emma are standing at the door, with angry looks on their faces (oooooh!). They ask Rahne and Dani to come into their office, they need to talk. Scott begins to scold Rahne for her relationship with Josh, but Dani comes to her defense saying that nothing happened. Rahne admits to having a relationship, which she ended last semester. Dani, feeling angry and betrayed, storms out and slams the door.
Meanwhile, Noriko is trying to talk to Josh at the pool, but she doesn't want to get close... electricity and water don't mix. Just as she's about to ask Josh what's wrong with David, Dani runs in to talk to Josh about what just happened. Dani is mad at Rahne, but not at Josh. She blames Rahne for the whole thing, even though Josh admits to pursuing Rahne.
New York City
Scott and Emma go to meet with Dr. Sean Garrison, Kevin's psychiatrist. They are asking him if he wants to become a full time employee of the Xavier Institute, as the school guidance counselor (GASP!). He politely declines the position, and the two leave his office.
Xavier's
The kids are just sitting around in like a common room. Noriko comes up to Laurie and David who are playing Monopoly or some other board game.
Nori: Hey David. How are you doing?
David: (leaving) I'm okay Nori. But, uh, I got some studying I need to do.
Laurie: Hey Josh. Over here!
Nori: David, what's going--
Julian: Congratulations, Josh. Who knew you were such a stud? Bagging a teacher when you already got a girlfriend. You're the man!
Josh: Why don't you just keep your mouth shut, Julian? I wish you and Kevin and everyone would just mind your own business!
Laurie: (shocked face)
Julian: Oops, guess your girlfriend hadn't heard the news yet.
Laurie: (runs away)
Outside, in the garage, Dani comes over to Rahne who is getting ready to leave on her motorcycle. Rahne is leaving to join Jamie with his detective agency (X-Factor Investigations). Dani is still angry and won't accept her apology, but she doesn't want her to leave. Rahne leaves anyways.
Meanwhile, Laurie is crying by a pond over what Josh did to her. He comes up to her, to apologize and explain, but she tells him to go away. When he refuses, she uses her fear pheromones to scare him off.
http://i25.tinypic.com/pq2rd.jpg
He runs into David and tells him what just happened. David is also angry at him for having a relationship with a teacher. (He was probably jealous because Josh got with Rahne and he couldn't get with Dani). He tells Josh to stop talking to him and walks off.
The Collins Home, Salem Centre
Laurie tells her mother what happened, and how she used her powers to scare away Josh. Her mother tells her that it was wrong to use her pheromones to control others, her father used to do it. Laurie then flips out at her mom and says that she won't hide from her emotions anymore.
"I won't be your little Wallflower anymore."
Laurie's mom, crying goes to look at a photo of Laurie's father and herself. The page changes, and Dr. Sean Garrison has the same photo. HE IS LAURIE'S FATHER! He calls up Emma Frost and tells her that he'd like to accept her offer to become a school employee.
"I'm looking forward to it. I wish I could have come sooner, but I have plans. Big plans."
The End.

Review:
This issue was really good. I loved the opening scenes with the Hulk fight (done properly!) and the small panel time for the Paragons squad, who all seem pretty interesting. Michael Ryan's art is pretty good, even though sometimes the faces are off. This was a big issue for Wallflower, and it helped her characterization continue. She is becoming much more assertive and less of a wallflower, which is major PLUS. Noriko still hasn't found out what's up with David yet, I really wish she'd just get angry and confront him already. Not much Sofia in this issue, but it was nice to see her bonding with Jay and having fun dancing with him. The end reveal was cool and I was hoping Sean Garrison would have become a teacher.
Also, nice to see Stevie Hunter's dance studio is still around!

This issue was so full of WIN!
Laurie was most defintiely the highlight. From using her pheromones on Josh to bitching out her mother. She was glorious. Nori annoyed me a bit but mainly because she was all "David! TALK TO ME!" UGH. This is the issue were my dislike of Kevin went up tenfold. He makes me sick. The scene between Rahne and Dani was a nice little touch as well. I nwonder what it would it have been like if Rahne had not left. DRAMA. Or more of it at least.
The Stevie Hunter dance studio was a nice little touch as well! I wish we could have seen her.

Laurie came off a lot better re-reading this issue this time around.
When I first read it, I was really disappointed Wallflower wasn't more sinister but she did good in this issue. I am slowly healing my feelings towards her.
Otherwise, I just liked the Sofia/Icarus and Paragons parts. Surge and David and Rahne and Dani annoyed me and it was too vanilla.

Our issue begins with Prodigy, Wallflower, and Wind Dancer in uniform surrounded by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, and standing outside of the X-Mansion. As the three contemplate Logan, the Wolverine’s, brainwashing and attack upon the X-Men Wallflower is approached by Wither. Wither tells our blooming Wallflower she’s unsafe, but she and her calming pheromones have another opinion. Wallflower stalks off, tired of being thought of as weak and helpless, leaving Wither dazed and curious about her transformation. Wind Dancer speculates that it has something to do with Josh’s recent betrayal when an X-Jet crashes into the area!
Northstar greets the kids, denies Wallflower the chance to stop Wolverine, and races off with Shadowcat in one sweep. Icarus flies by Prodigy, claiming that his healing factor will protect, but Prodigy isn’t so sure.
Icarus: My Healing Factor should keep me safe. I’m gonna help scout for Wolverine.
Prodigy: Jay, that ability may not be with you forever! You should be careful….
Elixir: Hey, look! It’s Captain America!
Surge: David, what are you talking about? Jay’s powers work fine.
Elixir leaves to check out the scene and Prodigy follows, calling him an idiot. Surge follows, distraught after being blown off by Prodigy yet again. When Prodigy and Surge finally catch up Captain America comes out from the bushes to send them home, but Elixir eyes a casualty around the Captain’s buff body. It’s Northstar. Elixir heals and heals his body, but he can’t restore Northstar’s life and he cries into Moonstar’s open arms.
The next morning Emma and her boyfriend hold an assembly announcing Northstar’s death and memorial service. No classes will be held until after the memorial and the year will finish. Xi’an Coy Mahn speaks to Alpha Squad, explaining that she will be the new Squad Advisor.
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/3038/alphasquad.jpg
Alpha Squad isn’t so sure. Andrea heard rumors that Mahn has to take care of the Lower School and the Paragons as well as Alpha Squad, and Victor is convinced it will never be the same. He races out of the room in tears and forces Mahn to hunt him down. They have a heart to heart about not trying to replace Jean-Paul Beaubier and we turn the page for an equally sentimental moment.
Sophia finds Julian in the yard and asks him what he’s doing. He explains that he elected to show for Flight Class, knowing it was cancelled. They fly together and reminisce about Sophia’s first day at Xavier’s and the day Julian switched advisors from Beaubier to Frost.
Hellion: He thought I was gonna become a villain. Flattering, huh? But he cared about his students. About me. A lot.
Wind Dancer: You miss him.
Hellion: I think I’m gonna just fly for a while.
Wind Dancer: I’ll fly with you.
Meanwhile, Moonstar, Polaris, and Iceman are viewing Northstar’s handsome corpse as an S.H.I.L.D. physician prepares to decapitate it. Moonstar asks for a minute and Iceman starts to cry, but before their sixty-seconds ends The Hand led by Electra steals the corpse. Furious, Moonstar takes it out on Mahn, Frost, and Scott Summers.

Bitter, Moonstar refuses to participate in Northstar’s memorial, but she takes Elixir with her as his friends all hate him and he has nowhere to sit. Laurie and Sophia pass by Julian, Santo and Brian on their way to the service, dressed in their most casual of clothes. The triad is sipping out on the funeral and Sophia doesn’t get Julian at all.
Alpha Squad sneaks a peak at the new Northstar statue with the aid of Mahn, and the service begins. Everyone from Frost to Mahn says some words. The words are nice enough that Julian listens in from a spot in the sky, and the issue ends stunningly with Moonstar delivering a speech, despite her earlier rages.

This issue was so mournful and fantastic. It was nice to see Northstar's squad and you could see they all really felt his death. I would have actually liked to see them interact with Sasquatch or get a little more screentime to show like their favorite memories of Northstar. Anole was tolerable and it was so obvious he was gay. And Karma's sweater...she's so butch. The bits with Julian and Sofia were great too. All in all fabulous issue.

Dance Hall Days

Issue number 14 begins in the Metahuman Crimes Division. Instead of completing her decorating duties, our very own Miss Moonstar has dialed the FBI with a complaint. Her intellectual boyfriend, Justin Pierce, hasn’t invited her out recently. Eventually getting to the point the two agree to attend the prom as chaperones.
It seems like everyone is talking about the dance, Noriko Ashida and Jeffrey Garret among them. As they walk past Josh Foley’s lonely table Nori reveals that she has no plans for dancing. Laurie is in the same boat, but where Sofia fails, David gets a date. Nori claims to be upset of the Josh abuse and storms off into none other than the royal Julian Keller’s path.
Hellion: Hey! Watch where you’re going, Ashida. I’m practically royalty around here.
Surge: In your dreams, Julian.
Hellion: Hey! Check out the standings, everyone. You’ll see whose squad is on top! And come Prizegiving, the Hellions will be getting the Field Day award!
Julian has love on his mind, but his love isn’t enough to win over Sofia. Kevin Ford has a similar heartbreak when Laurie and David explain their newly budding romance.
Once they’re alone again Julian and Sofia show their more genial sides.
http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/322/aloneisdifferent.jpg
And we move with Sofia’s final comment to New York City and Dr. Sean Garrison, Laurie’s father. Dr. Garrison’s walls are peppered with superheroes but his room is filled with the Blob. Freddy Dukes has been depressed since he heard about the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants going after the X-Men yet again. Somehow he feels as though he could have made a difference. As a psychiatrist, Garrison knows what he’s talking about when he tells Blob to be true to himself.
While she is as skillful as the doctor, Karma is having more trouble with her charges. Everyone, including her, would prefer Rahne as group leader.
Luckily a more cheerful page has appeared containing Nori, Joshua Guthrie and Sooraya Qadir. Instead of checking on Nori, like she assumed, Jay arrived to invite Sooraya to the Spring Dance. Our favorite Romeo substitute knew she’d say no, but he still wanted to ask. With that we return to Nori, who has wandered into Xi’an Coy Mahn’s domain: the library. Mahn is absent as Nori ambles up to Josh, hard at work on his homework. Josh has as little skill with the ladies as anyone else we’ve seen this issue, but he manages to keep Nori around with the promise of revelations about David’s recent behavior.
The cute décor can’t distract Moonstar from Mahn’s requests. The kids miss Rahne Sinclair, and Mahn can’t handle two squads and the Lower School. Moonstar is saved from explain those “calls” by her FBI date.
But Moonstar and Mahn aren’t the only chaperons. Emma Frost, Scott Summers, and Gail Collins share a moment together on the edge of the dance floor. Collins displays her paranoia, but is quelled by Frost.
White Queen: Your daughter is progressing very nicely on the social front. She’s really come out of her shell.
Gail Collins: That’s wonderful to hear…you don’t think she would ever use her pheromones to manipulate a social situation, do you, Miss Frost?
White Queen: The temptation is always there. But your daughter is a very responsible girl.
Collins is surprised to see David as Laurie’s date, but he assures her he won’t ruin the evening for Laurie.
Not too far away, Kevin and Julian converse about his love life. Kevin insists Cessily isn't good enough for him.
And a little closer, Josh and Nori sit silently on the bleachers, until they notice his ex and her husband together. Nori doesn’t find Josh amusing, and readily accepts Quill’s invite to dance. But Josh isn’t destined to be alone this night. Amara Aquilla reintroduces herself to golden skinned chap and pulls him to the dance floor, while Julian pulls Jay off of it.
Hellion: Uh, will you excuse me, ladies?
Three-in-One: Of course, Julian.
Hellion: Hey, Jay—You don’t mind if I cut in, do you?
Icarus: Not my decision, Julian.
Hellion: Just once dance, beautiful.
Wind Dancer: It’s not enough for you to date one Stepford Cuckoo? It had to be all three?
Julian and Sofia share a sweet moment, but David and Laurie share a sinister one. Laurie asks David to kiss her when she spots Josh with another of the original New Mutants. David is ridiculous and refuses, so Laurie resorts to some not so honest tactics.
Just because Justin Pierce is okay with dating a single mom, doesn’t mean Josh can deal with David and Laurie. Aquilla and Moonstar keep him from the pair, and he leaves with Moonstar for a walk. He won’t be the only leaving early, though. Sofia is furious and she uses her wind to blow away the pheromones, releasing David from Laurie’s spectacular spell. Upset, David runs out without his glasses, as Sofia confronts Laurie. Neither of notice Gail Collins as Laurie fights back. Upon seeing each other, Collins runs home crying and Laurie stands ashamed.
The next day after the dance, Moonstar listens in the Headmasters’ office to some soul crushing news. The Avengers have called the X-Men to a meeting, but Prizegiving is tomorrow. However, Frost and Summers have chosen not to cancel, but to leave Moonstar in charge of the event.
Bad news abruptly follows this good news. The Blob has been informed of the X-Men’s departure and hired a man to drive him to Salem Center for a fight.

School’s Out Forever
Written by: Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir
Pencils by: Pace Medina
Cover by: Michael Ryan
Edited by: Mike Marts
The Prizegiving Ceremony has finally arrived!! The air is full of the buzz of excited parents and ominous clouds. Sofia Mantega is the first New Mutant to show herself, as we see her strike up a conversation with Gail Collins. Neither understands Laurie Collin’s recent behavior, and their confusion isn’t remedied by Laurie’s cold greetings.
Amara Aquilla is interested in Danielle Moonstar’s love life, but that’ snot what Moonstar wants to discuss. Moonstar wants Aquilla to take a teaching position, but Aquilla isn’t as keen on the idea. Regardless, Moonstar is glad to have her pal back with the X-Men out of town.
And she certainly should be, as the Blob is now entering Salem Center.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2001/newxmen1503.jpg
Xi’an Coy Mahn demonstrates her kindness with a visit to Rahne Sinclair, whom you may remember as Wolfsbane and Josh Foley’s girlfriend. Mahn and Sinclair sit down for a coffee and Mahn gets right down to business. She wants Sinclair back, or to at least think about it.
Moonstar is having a better time with her ceremony. Before she can name the winning squad, Julian displays his arrogance unashamedly.
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/737/ofcourse.jpg
David Alleyne is in a bad mood, despite winning the Award for Academic Excellence. He verbally abuses his team and announces his plan to leave the school early next year. Gail Collins takes this opportunity to leave, but when she reaches the gate she’s crushed by the Blob’s fury!!
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/1312/diebitchq.jpg
Moonstar orders the students inside as Justin Pierce and Aquilla go after Freddy. But bullets and fire won’t work against the Blob! He can’t feel pain, but as he so sagely points outs: the students can. Thankfully, Hellion is able to create an impressive TK bubble to protect them. With her charges safe, Moonstar attacks. A poor move, as her illusions only enrage the stalwart Blob.
The students watch the dismal display from inside. Josh expresses a desire to help, but Julian reminds him of the Hellions skill. David interrupts this conversation and asserts that this problem goes beyond squads, which is why he demands that only his squad and the Hellions fight, while he uses the Cuckoos for communication.

The two teams go after the Blob, already in uniform from the ceremony.
Hellion and Wind Dancer put out the fire and stop the Blob in his tracks. Icarus, Jay Guthrie, swoops down and rescues Wind Dancer from an untimely death and Tag, Brian Cruz, forces Blob to run in fear from Hellion. Wither, Kevin Ford, is tempted to use his death touch, but Mercury, Cessily Kincaid, refuses to let him go. Dust, Sooraya Qadir, and Rockslide, Santo Vaccarro, need assistance, but Wallflower and Elixir are busy with an injured Gail Collins. Surge, Noriko Ashida, has a plan, but Prodigy’s flashback lashes out at her instead. Before the fight gets too out of control, Wallflower and the Three in One put Blob down.
http://i32.tinypic.com/o7t1t4.jpg
Meanwhile, Mahn and Sinclair are taking a stroll through Mutant Town. Sinclair tells Mahn that Mutant Town is her new home, and with that she runs off to save little mutant children with Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man.
Back at the school, the government has arrived in time for Julian do their heavy lifting and Moonstar and Aquilla feel good together. Laurie and her mother were reunited by the rotund super villain, and even though she turns Julian down, Sofia has given up on squad rivalry.
Nori takes the time to confront David and addresses him as a moron. Josh also wants to chat, but David is too busy moping over his finished squad.

LOL what I love about this issue was the pointless fight with the easiest outcome. The students went through all that recklessness just to have the Couscous finish him off with a quick mind blast. Lovely. It was nice to see them all work together though. And its wonderful how Laurie is obviously one of the most powerful students.

Laurie's mom really did suck. I loved the dance issue though, despite Gail and the weird chubby-faced art. Quill dancing with Surge was so cute, but not cute enough for me to actually like him. The danger room scene with the Paragons and Alpha Squadron was good too. It's obvious that Anole hates Karma... AND DJ SAID SOMETHING
School's Out Forever was really amazing too. I loved the fight scene, even though it just ended up with the Cuckoos and Laurie winning it for everyone. But it was great leadership by Prodigy. Again, Laurie's mom is a bitch and I really wish she hadn't made up with her. (Then Sofia and Julian would have spent the summer, and the Hellions mini could have been called Wind Dancer & Hellion)

New X-Men: Academy X Yearbook Special
Campfire

This one shot special takes place several weeks after the prizegiving ceremony, during the summer vacation.
The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning
Several weeks ago...
After the fight with the Blob, the New Mutants squad is in a mess. David is avoiding Nori, Nori is trying (unsuccessfully) to talk to David, David hates Josh, Josh hates David, etc. This leaves Sofia feeling disappointed and scared for the future of her friends and teammates. Julian assures her that everything will be alright, and then KISSES HER.
http://i28.tinypic.com/2ai0f9x.jpg
Sofia then goes to see Dani about the problem and it is worse than she had expected. Several of the New Mutants have requested squad transfers for next school year!
After coming up with an amazing new plan, she goes to see Noriko and Jay at the Grindstone Cafe. Nori is still angry that David is ignoring her, but Sofia tells her that it's how all great romances start... which doesn't really help the situation. But she changes subject, and asks Nori when she gets off work... Sofia has something cooking. And her amazing plan is? A CAMPFIRE for the New Mutants squad!
Later that night, Dani, Amara and Shan are watching the kids at their campfire. Dani is sad that they are so like family, yet they are ready to kill each other. Amara tells her that it really does sound like a family, and that Dani has done an excellent job teaching them. Also, Amara is going to take a vacation soon.
At the campfire, Sofia suggests that David, the co-leader, starts the discussion. But he doesn't feel up for it, and apparently nobody else does. Sofia gets angry and tells them that no matter what their problems are, they are still a team and they should get over it and talk. Josh jumps in, angrily, saying that he'd love to talk since nobody has been talking to him for weeks. Then Laurie jumps in, followed by David and finally Nori.
http://i31.tinypic.com/jkgidw.jpg
They continue to fight until Sofia gets angry.
I SAID STOP!
However, they still argue.
Fine. I'll use my wind to carry your voices away.
And in a stunning, new display of powers, Sofia mutes all of them with her powerful wind powers. Without being able to yell at David, Josh throws the first punch. But, David's powers allow him to see attacks coming and he easily dodges Josh's fists. Josh then tries to tackle him, but ends up with a face full of grass. After this, Laurie pleads to Sofia to give them all their voices back, and she agrees. Laurie needs to tell them something.
Sofia: The wind has brought you back your words. Do it.
Jay: ...Won't help.
Laurie: Guys. Stop. This is as much my fault as anyone's.
Josh: David's had a butt-kicking coming for a long time, Laurie.
David: Really? You cheat on her and I have this coming?
Laurie: David didn't do anything. I made him kiss me. With my pheromones.
Josh: You did what?

After this, Jay has had enough. He leaves the campfire, commending Sofia's attempts to get this group back together.
http://i28.tinypic.com/241t2yd.jpg
Meanwhile, Amara, Dani and Shan are in the cafeteria drinking coffee. Dani is afraid that they'll never forgive each other. Amara then says "like you'll never forgive Rahne?". Dani argues that it's a completely different situation. Shan understands that Dani feels betrayed, but she still believes that Dani should mend the old relationship. To which Dani says "Perhaps".
Back at the campfire, Josh goes up to Jay who is sitting alone and playing his guitar. They talk about how Jay is so likeable and how Josh used to be part of an anti-mutant group. Josh then explains why he liked Rahne. It's because she was the first person who was nice to him after he saved her. They both didn't fit in and they just connected. But now that he's met Laurie, he's grateful that Rahne broke it off. He really likes Laurie and they are good together. Laurie, Sofia, Nori and David then show up. Josh and Laurie apologize and their relationship is now just friends. Laurie and Josh then apologize to David and all is good. But Nori is still upset and she walks away.
Later
David wakes up Nori, they need to talk.
David: Noriko, can I talk to you for a sec?
Nori: Whatever.
David: I know you asked to be transferred off the squad.
Nori: So? You know. Big Deal.
David: Well, I asked to be transferred too.
Nori: But... you're the captain.
David: Look, I've been acting stupid. I know that. The dream I had was so... real.
Nori: But it wasn't real, David.
David: I know that, too.
Hey, I'm trying to say I'm sorry, okay?
Nori: Okay.
David: There is nobody as loud and as opinionated and as frustrating as you.
Nori: Heh, boys always say the sweetest.
David: It's just that I don't how to deal with you... but I want to. And that whole dream made it clear that I want to.
Nori: You think too much. And you talk too much.
David: I'm just trying to explain--
Nori: Oh, shut up already.

The Next Morning
The kids come back to the institute, looking as cheerful as ever. All went well and Dani has decided to go patch things up with Rahne in New York.

Review: This is one of the best issues of the series. Sofia is shown as the heart of the team, never giving up and doing what she needs to in order for the team to stay together. I love the way she uses her powers to mute their voices. Nori finally gets what she wanted, but I'm kinda sad that she wasn't the one to initiate the conversation... even though she did kiss him. Laurie was kinda sad this issue because everything she did was finally catching up to her, and she had to apologize to Josh and David (lame).
Reading this issue makes me sad that it's the last "New Mutants" story of the series, after this is the Hellions mini, then HoM, then M-Day... so in the end, keeping the team together wasn't really worth it lol. But nevertheless, it was a fantastic story and one of the most memorable of that squad. Yay Sofia!

So fast and you guys blasted through the best issues!
The Blob arc is my favorite arc of Academy X. It was innocent, simple fun.
I hated the Yearbook's art. It was very unspectacular for what was to be the closing of N&C's run. I was overall a little underwhelmed about the whole thing, other than the Sofia parts (her manipulation of sound is my favorite of her abilities behind cutting a bitch with the wind).

Its everybody's favorite Academy X antagonists in their own epic mini! Summer has arrived and the Hellions are enjoying the last days of school as champions. The squad defeated their rivals, the New Mutants, and finished with the most points in the Academy's Field Day contests. But not everyone will be there for the awards ceremony. Emma Frost, the Hellions mentor tells Julian that she's been called off on official X-Men business. Julian is less than thrilled and lets her know it.
Emma: Your team has alienated all the other squads as well as almost getting the school into legal trouble.
Hellion: Well, if you wanted all the squads to get along, you shouldn't have put us in a position to compete with one another.
Emma urges Hellion to seek out alternatives to outright hostility, and he agrees to try. After mocking the entire student body at the Awards Ceremony, Hellion and the rest of the squad head to the airport for a cross country trip to Julian's home in Los Angeles. They're greeted by airport security, who are pretty adamant about not allowing Cessily or Santo onto the airplane due to their physical mutations.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6000/image1t.jpg
The team protests, as they all have IDs and tickets. Sooraya is hesitant, but the decision is made to force their way through. Security fires on the squad, but Hellion sheilds the team while Mercury and Rockslide disarm them. When security retreats due to Tag using his powers on Kevin, Dust takes it upon herself to go negotiate a cease fire. Meeting with the head of security, Hellion makes a phone call to one of his parents contacts at the Department of Homeland Security and they soon find themselves on board and en route to the West Coast.
On the plane we learn about Cessily and her troubled relationship with her parents as she sits with Sooraya. Dust shares that she hasn't seen her mother since she was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Rockslide reminds Wither that he's still part of the team despite his death touch while Julian discusses his family with Brian. Hellion says that his parents are new money, self made, and that they'll be away during the summer so the team will have the LA Mansion to themselves.
The Hellion's arrive at Julian's home to find that his parents are still there and are not happy with their son. Julian's father scolds him for using their parents status so recklessly, obviously unhappy with his son's lack of restraint as well as his desire to master his mutant abilities instead of focusing on being normal. As punishment, Julian's parents have removed him from their will and will give everything to his brother, James.
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/6479/image2xfu.jpg
The team is outside enjoying the pool when they see the Keller's leave for their vacation. Soon after, there is a loud crash from inside the house. Julian has ransacked his father's office looking for dirt, adamant on fighting for his inheritence. The team arrives and helps him rifle through the family business records while he searches the room. Wither and Cessily note that his parents became overnight successes after a rapid expansion of their small business. Using his telekinesis, Hellion finds a secret safe inside the office wall and unlocks it. It reveals a document detailing a ritual for summoning The Kingmaker.

07-25-2009, 01:37 AM
The Hellions debate the authenticity of the parchment scroll Julian found in his parent's secret safe. He's determined to learn the truth, while Sooraya is wary of dealing with what could be dark magic. Cessily and Kevin round up the items needed to perform the ritual, Brian grabs some snacks. Dust still protests but does not wish for confrontation. Mercury calms her fears, stating that even if it doesn't work that at least Julian is less upset with his mind off the days previous events.
Wither: Cessily is right. Besides, have you ever heard of a spell that involves candles, spices, and a phone? How real could this thing be?
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/7554/image3g.jpg
After completing the ritual, it appears as if nothing resulted of it. The squad gathers for breakfast the next morning laughing about the events of the previous night. Hellion jokes that his parents aren't cool enough to be mixed up with magic. But then the doorbell rings... revealing the Kingmaker at the door.

Review:
I was happy with this issue, largely because it was the first real focus the Hellions squad had up to this point. Until this mini, The Hellions were almost purely antagonists, the New Mutants rival squad. This issue wasn't exactly action packed, but it gave characters like Cessily and Julian some much needed depth. One of the best juxtapositions N&C provided in their tenure was that when set against the New Mutants, who were often at each others throats, the Hellions appeared much more to be a group of good friends. They meshed together well and it helped with their successes in the squad program. The Hellion's mini also has some of the best art of the Academy X series up to this point.

Fortune & Glory: Part 2
Written by: Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir
Pencils by: Clayton Henry
Cover by: Clayton Henry
Edited by: Mike Marts
The issue opens with Diamondback and Paladin scoping out a remote lab for a company called Genetassist, who have been working on a new weapon of some kind. Security is low, but the word of this weapon has traveled far and wide. The two mercenaries have taken a job to steal it.
Where we had last left the Hellions, they had gathered for breakfast at Julian's home in Los Angeles after performing a ritual to summon the Kingmaker, the man responsible for the Keller Family's wealth. Believing it to be a hoax, they are surprised to find the Kingmaker himself knocking on their door... and he brings with him an offer they can't refuse. Each member of the Hellions gets a to make a wish, and the Kingmaker will do everything in his power to make it come true. Sooraya, still uneasy about the entire situation, reads through the lines to see that they won't be getting these wishes for free. The Kingmaker uses a network of clients with various skill sets, each receiving something they wish, but indebted to the Kingmaker should he need them in the future.

While certain members of the team are eager to take this offer, Dust is still hesitant and the Kingmaker wants the entire team or he won't deal with them at all. Hellion barters with him to establish a trial period, where each team member gets to see what the Kingmaker can do for them before they make a final decision. He agrees, and the team all makes their wishes.
First up is Rockslide, who wants to become a professional fighter in a superhuman league. The Kingmaker says that Santo's strength will be respected in the league, and he'll be among peers in that the appearance of a fighter made of rock won't be out of place. Rockslide quickly wins over the crowd by defeating a wrestler with bionic arms named Strongarm. As Santo shows off for the crowd, Tag is trying to decide on what to wish for.
Tag: Hey, Kingmaker. I think I know what I want... (whispers wish)
Kingmaker: Brian, my dear boy, I think you can do better.
Next is Mercury, who wanted her parents to accept her appearance. Cessily arrives at home and the Kincaid's come out to greet her, and are very excited, much to her surprise. Her father proudly reintroduces her to a neighbor who hasn't seen her since her powers manifested. Cessily's mom plans for them to spend an evening out to catch up.

continued from previous page...
Meanwhile, Kevin stands outside while Julian and Brian are lounging by the pool. Wither had wished for a cure to his mutant death touch, so he could touch living things again. Julian reassures him that Kingmaker will come through for him, just as a deliveryman arrives with a package. A new prescription for Kevin. The deliveryman isn't alone, however, as the neighbor's dog has followed him into the backyard and proceeds to bark incessantly. Kevin goes inside to apply this new miracle cure, and a half hour later he reemerges too scared to test it out, worried that he'll be devastated if it fails. The dog, still in the area, runs over to Kevin and makes skin contact. It survives, and Kevin is elated.
We next see Kingmaker and Sooraya in Afghanistan. Dust wished to see her mother again, as she had lost contact with her during the war. The two pull up to a refugee camp and are greeted by Sooraya's mother. Kingmaker says it was difficult to find her, but that he'd pull some strings to see if he could emigrate her to the United States.

Back on the other side of the world, Julian is walking with Brian in Hollywood wondering what's in this deal for him. When do they get their wishes?
Tag: What'd you wish for?
Hellion: Fortune and glory, man. The basics. And you? I heard the Kingmaker say your wish sucked.
Tag: Yeah... I changed mine. No big.
There is a nearby event at the Chinese Theatre, likely a movie opening. The stars have all turned up, even the Governator himself... and a sniper has him in his sights. Brian notices something is up and Julian springs into action, flying up with a TK shield and deflecting the bullet. He knocks the assassin off the rooftop and apprehends him for the police. The media swarms him, and Julian is more than happy to give him his story. The questions soon turn towards him being a mutant and Brian steps in to help, insisting that he take one question at a time and giving the floor to a reporter named Jennifer Matlin. Turns out, she's no ordinary reporter, but a client of the Kingmaker herself. As the crowd dies down, Julian takes some time to flirt with the reporter.

We next see Brian in a suit, working as Santo and Julian's manager. He's wished to become the Kingmaker's heir apparent, and appears to be doing a good job at with his resources. Everyone is happy with their wish, Sooraya is sharing time with her mother for the first time in years, Cessily is sitting down to family meals. Kevin is outside, enjoying nature, wearing shorts. Santo is working his way up the ladder to a championship bout and Julian is quickly becoming a Superhero media darling. But their trial period is over, and the Kingmaker has them called in to discuss where to go next. He has a job for them should they agree to his terms, and its from none other than Doctor Otto Octavius.

Review:
This was a character defining issue for the Hellions team, we learn each of their individual motivations and aspirations and for characters like Cessily and Sooraya, the heartbreak of their family lives. We also get an insight into Brian's insecurity, the only time Tag will every have any kind of character development as he'll meet a swift end after M-Day. I liked this issue, Hellion's being himself. Hamming it up for the cameras and hitting on older women. The art, as mentioned in the review for issue 1, is fantastic. Clayton Henry draws my favorite version of Cessily. The action turns up a bit in the next two issues, this one was mostly there to set the scene.

Wonderful Hakael!
Diamondback is great, and I like the reporter's hair as much Hellion's mom's. This art is excellent and I liked all of the kid's wishes. Even Santo's lame wish.

I didn't realize #2 went up! I like Dust on the cover, and Hellion needs to comb his hair.
I also like Ms. Matlin, she was cool.

If you like Dust or Hellion, this is a great mini. I mean, everyone else gets attention too, but I think this mini is really about Hellion mainly, but after him Dust has the best bits. I really enjoyed it. It was a fun little action mini about fun characters. And the art is beauuuuutiful! Clayton Henry yay!
