She can create an aura around her, that grants her flight.
Maybe if she would have mastered her power
she could have put the aura around other objects
making them levitate

Hydro is definitely pedo material. We have to keep him away from a certain octopus.
What are Aero's powers? I know she like...flies and glows and stuff, but does the glowy stuff do anything?
Well Hydro's dead now; so unless that pedophilic octopus is also a necrophiliac, I think Hydro's safe.

I always thought Aero's powers were just a watered-down version of Cannonball's.

Dallas is a good option. He didnt go for the physically mutated chicks. He wanted human looking girls. So Aero fits.

When Artery is doing his superstrength all of his veins should turn blue
And when he is doing whatever else he can do, they should turn red.
Just for some fun visuals

Maybe he's normally the orange and blue self depicted earlier, but when he uses his powers with all the blood rushing through his body, that's when he gets pale and the different veins pop out?

Hey I just read the first two issues. Really liking what I've seen! Especially issue 1. There'd be pages with no text, and yet you still feel this connection with Sophia. I loved New X-Men, it was one of my favorite books, but this one felt so personal. And I was never a big fan of Laurie, but issue 2 was sort of sad, especially when you know her eventual fate. Even when you don't like characters, you know someone out there can relate. And despite all the buildup and backstory -- BAM. None of it matters.
Hopefully I'll see some Surge, Elixir and Prodigy in the next issues. Which I've yet to order!!!

Summary for New Mutants #8:
We see Julian, Josh, Victor and the rock-kid, who is named Santo this issue, (you guys are doing the: we read this as new, not knowing of what's to come in future issues, right?) playing with a frisbee on the school grounds...
Josh and Julian are bitching about their detention (see last issue) and about their advisors Northstar and Moonstar and wanting someone cool, like Miss Frost...
After catching the frisbee with his prehensile tongue, Victor tells them them he plans to stick with Karma, cause he likes her :) Josh is grossed out by getting Vic's drool on the frisbee and Julian sticks up for Vic, which is kinda sweet and cute...
Santo throws the frisbee way too hard which causes it to go over the fence but Julian stops it on time with his telekinesis, and meets a homeless and apparently smelly girl in front of the gate. The girl talks really fast and asks to be let in in but Jules is being a preppy prick and sends her away... Josh wants to butt in but the girl is gone in a flash, leaving a trail of electricity behind...
Northstar shows up, reminding J&J about their assignments to be helping with the preparations for parents week and all 4 boys run inside...
Scene change to Salem center:
Dani takes Shan to the coffeeshop to which David introduced her the other day... (The Grindstone) She wants Shan to meet Luna, the girl who was hitting on Dani earlier... Shan is kinda offended by the idea and says she just wants coffee...
Xavier's again:
Some parents are walking about at the school and David takes his parents to his room and introduces them to Josh, his roommate... Since Josh his parents are not there (again, see previous issues), David's mom invites him to come along with them on the tour but David's being a bitch and lectural and says no...
Outside:
Laurie meets up with her mom, they hug... Bubblegum (yes I am more of a silent reader on these forums but know that you guys have named the pink guy/gal and love it!!!)hugs someone (surprise surprise) and Sofia meets Davids parents but keeps the conversation short because she sees Derek. The butler, who is also her BFF, LOL tells her he has a surprise and that her dad will arrive tomorrow too...
Julian tells a lie about his parents not wanting to see him so that Northstar feels sorry for him and lets him off the hook for registering duty...
Victor introduces his parents to Shan, his advisor and she tells them Vic is one of her favorite students and that she would like to discuss Vic's 'situation' with them later... And Julian meets up with Vic, and again a very cute and sweet scene between the 2...
The Grindstone again:
David and his parents are having drinks and his dad tells him that Harvard doesn't accept students from Xavier's, so maybe David needs to leave if he wants to attend college...
The next morning:
Sofia meets her dad and discovers he only agreed to meet her just to get Derek back working for him again... (He had left her dad after the Reavers thing). Sofia freaks out and chases her dad and Derek away with her fabulous windpowers. We see Dani watching from the window while Emma Frost walks towards Sofia...
Emma calms Sofia down and tries to lure her into trusting her instead of her current advisor. Dani to the rescue, with Laurie right behind her!
Dani and Emma bicker a little while Laurie comforts Sofia, that they are her family now, cause that's what BFF's do :)
Later, Northstar's office:
Julian tells Northstar he wants Emma Frost to be his advisor now, which Northstar thinks is a mistake, but he says that he will sign the transfer anyway. In the hallway, Miss Frost is waiting for Julian and he asks her if she can take Josh too. She tells him she'd like the challenge, with Josh being a former Reaver and all... Oops, Julian didn't know that... Julian doesn't like!!!
Outside:
David meets Sofia and Laurie who are sitting under a tree, K I S S I N G, oh no, they weren't, I just made that up hehehe...
Josh walks past them , straight towards Julian and Santo and asks him how it went with Frost. Julian spills the beans about Reavers and stuff and him and Santo start to pick on Josh. They are not his buddies anymore.
David and the girls to the rescue and things start to get out of hand...
Untill Vic comes running towards them, tagging along Shan. She stops the fight by taking over the boys' minds and sending them to their rooms...
Sofia and Laurie also walk to their room later where a surprise awaits Sofia. Laurie let derek in there and she leaves them alone to talk... Again, she is such a BFF :)
Later we see David with his parents again, in front of the school this time and he tells them he's staying at Xavier's, and if that means he can't go to Harvard because of that, then them's the beans... His friends are here and here is where he belongs...
Inside his room, Josh is laying on his (own) bed and when David shows him the detention notice, Josh asks him if David is going to lecture him again...
They reconcile, Josh thanks him for sticking up for him, earlier with the fight with Julian and Santo... And there is the start of their brother-brother relationship I guess...
One more time, the Grindstone:
Luna, (the uber cool lesbian chick) notices the lights are blown and mumbles to herself about letting her employers close up shop, and basically suck at it... When taking out the garbage she apparently sees someone in the alley/back or whatever who apparently doesn't look so well and offers her help and food...
We don't see anyone, but a bolt/jolt of lightning and then Luna zapped out on the ground, injured... So probably safe to assume the person she was talking to is the girl who Julian sent away earlier...
What I thought of the issue:
I believe this was the issue which had to be changed while it was already at the print... The famous never happened suicide issue in which we would have lost Anole if editorial hadn't changed their mind at the very last moment. Which explains the art change somewhere around half of the issue, and not for the better IMO. Ugly art which seems really rushed... That or it is just ugly, you pick...
Anyway, the friendships between the main characters is deepened further in this issue... A bit boring for my taste, but I did like the Anole appearances and Carlo Barberi really draws him supercute!!!
Beside Surge, wee also see Match for the first time here,(and he FLIES!!) although at this time he was just a creation Barberi liked to draw... I remember N&C saying that on a website at that time and that they had no plans for using him or fleshing him out or anything... (Which later apparently changed when they decided to put him in the Paragons squad)

Julian sticks up for Vic, which is kinda sweet and cute...
<snip>
And Julian meets up with Vic, and again a very cute and sweet scene between the 2...
I think Victor might have a bit of a crush on his good friend Julian. I mean, I dont want anything to come of it. But Julian is one of those guys who you kinda just HAVE to crush on. He's popular, powerful, attractive, and charismatic. Again, I'm NOT a Julian/Victor shipper. I just think its a bit of a one-sided thing from Vic's side. And I dont think Vic takes it seriously either, because he knows Julian is straight.
Since Josh his parents are not there (again, see previous issues), David's mom invites him to come along with them on the tour but David's being a bitch and lectural and says no...
Well, David's not being lectural. He doesnt lecture Josh about the situation. He makes fun of him and throws it in his face. But can you blame him? Two issues ago Josh had signed up to KILL David and his friends. Did he? No. But that was his original intention. At least, as far as David knows, that was his intention.
Emma calms Sofia down and tries to lure her into trusting her instead of her current advisor. Dani to the rescue, with Laurie right behind her!

Yaaa, this is that ish. I posted a few links a while ago where Nunzio and Christina explained the whole creative process of writing these stories, and specifically what they went through with this story. It was pretty interesting.
And yeah, Carlo Baberi draws Anole uber cute! I'm a big fan of the small Anole with baggy clothes, lol.
Nice summary. I really like this issue alot. I'm a big fan. We really see Laurie and Sofia's friendship strengthen here, and we see the beginning of Josh and David's relationship. And we saw how close Vic and Julian are. I'm a big fan of those two. I really liked the Josh, Julian, Victor friendship before Julian started hating Josh.

Well, ok, maybe he wasn't lectural in this issue, but he had been up until now... Maybe it's just me not liking David very much at this stage... I only started liking him after the arc TOO MUCH INFORMATION I think... And under C&C's pen he even became one of my faves... But in these early issues he was just annoying IMO...

Can't wait to get to Academy X either, those are going to be fun!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAnd will finally showcase my 3 favourites: Dust, Trance and Loa!!!!

I've heard that before, that people thought David was very annoying early on. I read Academy X first then read New Mutants later on. I wonder if I would have liked David as much if I'd started with New Mutants.

Could be... Maybe try reading the issues as solo books and try to see what you think of each character without knowing anything else besides what happens in that issue...
Or don't, and just like him hehe... I don't care... I like the fact that everyone can have a different favorite...

And that every character also has non-fans... Like christos showed, but then later changed his mind apparently ;)

And I'm trying to wean myself off CBR forums, cus during MC, there was a time where I was literally on CBR aaaalll day. Lol, I think podmark and Vic remember that time. Maybe it wasnt during MC, maybe it was before. I dont know. Its when spoilers were flying about, and I needed more info.
But there really isnt all that much to post about lately. I wish it werent so, but it is.... I love the New X-Men.
Although I was just talking to Chris Yost at the ComiX-fan forums. We were debating about the end of New X-Men. Chris Yost thinks that Messiah CompleX was the perfect ending to New X-Men, and I told him that I disagreed.

Really? Like who?
To start, one of my biggest surprises was Icarus. I liked him much more than I was expecting. For some reason, I remember him being whinier, but he was actually pretty mellow.
Mercury was certainly... Different. When she addressed Laurie in the Field Day issues, it kind of caught me off guard.
Hated Rockslide. I am reminded why everyone was so baffled as to why they spared him. Tag was pretty lame as well.
What the hell happened to Hellion? N&C's Hellion was great. Such an entertaining asshole.
I forgot just how annoying Prodigy was. Surge was also rather annoying.
I was very surprised to find that I rather liked Wither very early on (before he left after being scared by Moonstar). Then when he came back, I was firmly reminded why it is that I hate him.
Sofia.... No complaints.
My opinion on Elixir stands. He rocks.
Also, as an aside, Ryan was easily the best artist.

C&C kinda revamped her attitude a bit as well. Well, thats not true, cus she acted very similar in the Hellions mini. But at the Institute, Cessily would front being a bitch to prevent people from getting close so she doesnt get hurt when they leave her. But I guess after M-Day, she just didnt care anymore.

Mmmmmmmmmm. Hafta disagree here. I think Surge was a little annoying (with her whole "David! Talk to me!" thing) but overall, I liked Surge more before she was Angry/Emo after M-Day. She was sarcastic, snarky, and fun. And I just always loved David.

The Ties That Bind Part 2 of 6:
"Parents' Week"
Written by: Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir
Pencils by: Carlo Barberi & Khary Randolph
Edited by: Mike Marts
We see Julian, Josh, Victor and the rock-kid, who is named Santo this issue, (you guys are doing the: we read this as new, not knowing of what's to come in future issues, right?) playing with a frisbee on the school grounds...
Josh and Julian are bitching about their detention (see last issue) and about their advisors Northstar and Moonstar and wanting someone cool, like Miss Frost...
After catching the frisbee with his prehensile tongue, Victor tells them them he plans to stick with Karma, cause he likes her Josh is grossed out by getting Vic's drool on the frisbee and Julian sticks up for Vic, which is kinda sweet and cute...
Santo throws the frisbee way too hard which causes it to go over the fence but Julian stops it on time with his telekinesis, and meets a homeless and apparently smelly girl in front of the gate.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/nxm/nm8-3.jpg
Dani and Emma bicker a little while Laurie comforts Sofia, that they are her family now, cause that's what BFF's do
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/nxm/nm8-2.jpg
Again, she is such a BFF
And there is the start of their brother-brother relationship I guess...
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/nxm/nm8-1.jpg
One more time, the Grindstone:
Luna, (the uber cool lesbian chick) notices the lights are blown and mumbles to herself about letting her employers close up shop, and basically suck at it... When taking out the garbage she apparently sees someone in the alley/back or whatever who apparently doesn't look so well and offers her help and food...

Review

Well, I always thought Icarus was just a nice guy who could get along with everyone... If Sofia wasn't already labeled as the heart of the team, Icaruse could have gotten that tag as well... He had scenes/was friends with everyone... Sofia, Laurie, espacially Nori and even with kids from the 'other' squad, Dust... I loved his friendly relationship with Dust...
Elixir even asks him how he does the thing, being liked by everyone in the Yearbook special, I believe...
Oh and Kid Icarus, thanks for spicing up my summary with the pics! :)

I just went on an all-nighter and read through all of N&C's run. Fun times. Some of my character opinions changed a bit.
Out of comics boredom (the downtime following a big crossover), I was re-reading random issues but I didn't read them all. My opinions have changed a bit, too.
I particularly was caught off guard by the Northstar issue. I still think it was a bit of a random way to introduce Alpha Squadron (why should we care about these kids--except maybe Victor? I think we should've gotten to know them prior), there was a great scene that referenced the first second issue of New Mutants featuring Sofia and Julian that I never took great notice to before. It brings out the romantic in me a bit. Really cute stuff. :)
My Wither high from re-reading NM was also brought down after reading his return. Is it a consensus that he was annoying in Academy X?
I hate C&C's Hellion.
I loved him written by N&C. It's like all the kids went emo after M-day. Which I think was just C&C's excuse to add Anole and Pixie.
I loved him, too. I liked C&C's version before the bus hit. They did a pretty good shallow jerk who was sensitive but just didn't really think.

I liked this issue quite a bit. It was nice to see Sofia, whose been quite solid since she arrived at the school, snap again and let loose. I think it would've been amazing if Emma pursued Sofia to be on her squad (and makes me wish the upcoming Choosing Sides arc was a bit more risky).

As for Wither, not only was he annoying, he was also a blackmailer and an attempted dragon-killer.

I think he was a good plot device and it was a good way to divide the New Mutants squad while tying up his story, but I just wish he didn't have one single line.
He was already the dangerous, brooding goth becoming the Laurie obsessed creep pushed him past likability.
ALSO~~we're not there yet in this thread, but I also didn't notice that Nori and David had chemistry from the very beginning. I just saw them as rivals turned lovers, but there was definite igniting sparks in the beginning. I don't totally hate their relationship now, even if it, like so many good things from this series, turned a bit annoying (so he got his heart torn out...and?).

I liked Laurie more early on than I did later. Josh makes the most radical changes in look and personality throughout the series.
Early Wither was very cool.

Yeah, Josh definitely developed the most. Laurie was cool, sadly, she went into "crazy bitch" mode towards the end. And of course, Wither was cool early on, but later became the sniveling creep that annoys the hell out of me.

I reread the first 4 or 5 issues on the weekend. And yeah I loved David just as much as before. Julian comes off a bit more of a jerk.
I liked Laurie more early on than I did later. Josh makes the most radical changes in look and personality throughout the series.
Early Wither was very cool.
I dunno, I think Laurie developed the most. Well, thats for just New Mutants and Academy X. If you want the ENTIRE run, then I guess Elixir has developed the most. But right until C&C took over, Laurie changed in every single issue.
Oh, and I go home in about a week and a half. After that, I can get my comic books and start reviewing with everyone! :)

Did anything ever happen to Wither. He met Black Queen(?) and...I don't remember. It was awhile ago. Was it ever resolved or just never touched since then?

No nothing has happened with it, but there is speculation that young x-men will use it.

I've heard speculation that X-Force will use it. I've never heard anything about YXM. But C&C stated theyre taking one of their long running subplots with them. And Elixir was just confirmed to show up in X-Force, and he's an important player in Wither's history.

That is true, Laurie did change quite a bit throughout the series. I didn't like how she was acting towards the end of N&C's run, though. Still, it is a shame that she died.

Yupyup. That is indeed Donald Pierce. He's gona be an important villain, so we've been told.

Someone posted a theory that Pierce might actually be a hologram from the Danger Cave (they're in a cave in the preview pics with Pierce, and we know the kids use the Morlock tunnels as their base).
This goes against what we were told in interviews but that could be misdirection. Pierce was said to be the one that kills the Young X-Man.

NEW MUTANTS V2. #9 (cover (http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/7541/newmutants29mp0.jpg))
The Ties That Bind Part 3 of 6:

Synopsis
News channels are reporting a rumbling from Brotherhood of Evil Mutants member Avalanche. Havok and Nightcrawler are on their way to stop this nefarious fiend, but a mysterious female biker beat them to the kick. In the face.
OWNED, bitch.Havok: "Well, I'll be...long time, no see, kid."At the Institute, Laurie is having sex craving daydreams about Josh in class. Well, not exactly, but she's drifting off in class thinking about that dreamy blonde boy.
Following Josh's reconciliation with the New Mutants Dani's other students, Laurie gets the balls to invite him to sit with them at lunch. Julian has a homoerotic fit and humiliates Josh by TK-ing his butt to the floor.
Sofia has a Claremont moment to avenge her new friend.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/greymalkin_ln/nm9-haha_julian.jpg
She also does this cute blow-the-smoke-from-your-gun type thing, but it looks totally phallic I opted not to post it.
The kids have heard about one of the old New Mutants returning. With the only one unaccounted for being that handsome redhead Wolfsbane, Josh thinks nothing of it until her ripped jean ass shows up, much to the excitement of Dani and Shan.
She certainly changed and Laurie's enthusiasm turns sour (*psst I think she's jealous of her boots*).
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/greymalkin_ln/nm9-rahne_new.jpg
Rahne's taken a different outlook on life, but her eyes definitely indicate something deeper is happening here (probably much to do with losing her foster mother Dr. Moira MacTaggert and the loss of her powers from Forge's neutralizing gun thing). She's ditched the boyish locks, the timid nature, and even her accent.Rahne Sinclair: "...you "dinnae 'spect" me to talk like a "wee lass" my whole life, did you?"The kids take Josh for the first time to the Grind Stone. On their way there, while he's complaining, he recognizes the homeless girl from last issue that Julian turned away from the mansion. She looks hopeless and depressed sitting on the edge of the sidewalk.
The kids enter the Grind Stone and ask for Luna and the kids learn there had been an accident.
They run to Dani and Shan who are still catching up on old times with Rahne. Josh connects the dots and the kids really want to do something about it. Dani tells them they've been in enough trouble already and that they should let the adults handle it.
Josh fiddles around in his room while David studies when Rahne shows up at their door, ready for some adventure. To get more fire power, they decide to bring along the girls. Like they had a choice.
When Laurie sees Rahne is the orchestrator, she doesn't take it too well.
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/greymalkin_ln/nm-9_ohlaurie.jpg
Sofia whoooshes Laurie's pheromones away before they can do any harm.
The kids encounter a bum who tells them about the girl named Surge. He directs them to a drug dealer named Click who might know where she is.
All of a sudden, David picks up Japanese through his powers. They find their target and Josh tells them to take the pills away from her or she might "explode" again. Sofia knocks the pills out of her hand and the young Japanese girl emits a burst of electricity.

Review
The weirdest part of this issue was with Rahne Sinclair. Her transformation made full sense, but it was really quite drastic and the core of her character wasn't really there.
I already know all of these characters, but I'm starting to agree with early nay sayers that this book was overloaded with characters. I am lucky to be such a nerd to keep up with who is "Shan", "Dani", "David", "Sofia", "Scooby", and the rest of the gang, but I can see where this would be a problem for newer readers.
Otherwise, I enjoyed the story. It was nice to see the kids be a little rebellious and on their own, despite editorial's adamant opposition. The group dynamics were overshadowed by Rahne's return, which is a shame with so many bright new faces in a new title like this one.

The Ties That Bind Part 4 of 6:

Synopsis
The future Hellions have their first group meeting with Emma Frost who has decided to take them in and teach them how to be pornographic S&M models. Seriously, she's wearing thigh high boots, hot pants, a choker necklace, weirdly shaped nipple covers, and sleeves (but no shirt).
Anyhoo, the kids pick their codenames, and Julian expresses interest in being a super villain. Tag decideds that Emma Frost's french pastries are better than Iceman's pizza. Detective Paul Smecker says: What a fag.
Meanwhile, the future New Mutants and the former Wolfsbane are out in town, getting the crap knocked outa them by Surge. David saves the day, and Josh expresses his lack of undying love for Laurie. They all head back to the school.
In the Med Lab, Surge calls Beast "furball". She's so snarky! Turns out those pills were controlling Surge's powers. She just wants the drugs again, but Beast and David give her the afterschool special schpeal just as Dani shows up. BUSTED. The kids broke curfew, put themselves in danger, and explicitely disobeyed Dani's wishes. Detention for a week! She turns on Rahne, but new badass Rahne just walks away
Rahne: "You know what? You're not my advisor, you can't lecture me. I'm going to get some sleep."
What a bitch!
Anyhoo, Josh finds the whole ordeal pretty funny, cus he was on detention anyway. David however, does NOT. He's pissed that Josh put everyone in danger, and doesnt believe that Josh really changed since coming to Xavier's. He realized Josh just follows whoever is "cool" at the time. Whether its Duncan and his Reaver friends, or Julian and his clique. Josh will do whatever it takes to be cool. Bedridden Nori is shocked to see David so harsh on Josh, and doesnt like it so much...
Quick scene where Dani and Josh express their undying hatred for each other, and then its off to the hospital to visit everyone's favorite lesbian coffee grinder!
Afterwards, Rahne tries to get Cyclops to hire her as a teacher, but everyone knows thats a disatrous idea, so he says no, and she decides to check out. Dani tries to stop her, but Rahne is angsty and badass, so she zooms away on her cool motor bike anyway. Josh watches longingly...
...and then sneaks away to Harry's Hideaway to flirt with Rahne, who threatened to rip off Harry's genetilia.
Meanwhile, we get a page of everyone's favorite background muties! We see Karma, Anole, and Match in French class. Vic even gets a line this issue!
Karma: "Hey, does anyone know where Josh is?"
Victor: "Nope, haven't seen him all day."
And what a surprise, Bubblegum is hugging someone! She's so sweet. Also, Cloud 9?? Wow, didnt know she was in this book.
Anyhoo, things start heating up at Harry's Hideaway when Josh reveals his powers of mutant intutition, as he explains why Rahne is now acting the way she does. Hormones! She has "feelings" and "urges" and she cant blame the "wolf inside her" anymore. So she freaked. But Rahne still says she doesnt want her powers back...
Nori gets her first set of gauntlets, and they're pretty tiny. Its interesting to see how each artist draws their own set. Anyhoo, David tries to show Nori around the school, but she kind of hates him because she thinks he's judgemental. She also hates Julian for being a dickwad to her when she needed help. She kinda just hates everyone. Say, maybe C&C DIDNT turn her into an angst ridden teen-- she was always this way I guess.
So finally, Josh and Rahne ride home together, she admits she wants her powers back, they make out, Josh gives her the wolf back, and she thanks him by ripping his guts out on Xavier's front steps.
Review
So this is the beginning of the infamous Wolfsbane/Elixir romance. It seems weird to most people because the characters are so different, but this issue did a good job of showing that Rahne isnt the same as the other original New Mutants. She's much younger (only 19 in this ish. David and Nori are 17, and Josh is 16), and she is still going through all the problems that these kids are going through. Josh is the only one who "gets" her right now. So I think it works in this story, but I'm still happy with the two of them apart.
David is pretty "afterschool special" in this ish: He talks about how drugs are bad, and lectures Josh... again. But he was also pretty badass in the beginning. He moved faster than lightning (literally) and dove to knock Sofia out of the way of Surge's blast. He was then the only one who could get close to her while she was going crazy, and carried her all the way home himself. I think this ish does a really good job of showing how David acts the way he is because he views himself as "the responsible one". Every group has one, and David is the one here. He takes it upon himself to save everyone, teach Josh why he's an idiot, and try and help Nori fit in after she arrives.
The Luna scene wasnt realy necessary, but I think N&C still wanted her to get together with Shan at this point, so it could have been worth it, if we got a hot lesbian make out scene down the line. Too bad we didnt...
Overall, I liked this ish. But like the last ish, there are alot of characters. The arc is coming to a close, and if I didnt already know the ending, I would really want to know whats going to come next!

She was also seen in issue 8, but with black hair :) I think it was a creation of Carlo Barberi, trying to create his own recognizable backgrounders...
About the issue:
Seeing Victor absent from Emma's progenies, confirms Vic's distancing himself from their thight-knit group after they kicked out Josh...
After the fight during parents day, Vic was also absent at their table during lunch last issue and now in this one we learn he decided to stick with karma instead of switching to Emma with the rest...
(And in later issues, we see him still close with Josh, like shooting balls in either #3 or 4 after the title change and also giving Josh advice about using the Cuckoos for info during mercury Falling/Rising)

This is all very true, but in issue #13 of New Mutants, all the kids are at the local X-Corp building (I think) because Magneto destroyed the school. And Vic is shown staying with Julian, Cessily, and Santo. I think Vic is just keeping his ties with all his friends without sacrificing what he wants as a student. His friends are all switching to Frost? So what? He likes Karma, so he's sticking it out. Julian and the gang hate Josh? So what? Vic likes Josh, and he will play basket ball with him from time to time! But that doesnt mean he isnt friends with Julian and co.

Foreword: This issue compares Rahne Sinclair and Laurie Collins side by side. We go through all of Rahne's history (I think) and learn Laurie's origin. Every page or so it switches from Rahne's story to Laurie's story. Alot of the narration is similar in each story, which really makes this ish stronger, so it'll be difficult to convey all the strong aspects of this story, but I'll do the best I can.
Synopsis
Present: We start off in Laurie and Sofia's room. They hear Rahne come back with Josh, but its after curfew, AND they're on detention, AND Josh blew off his classes that day, so they know Josh'll get in even more trouble if he's caught. Laurie decides to help him sneak in.
Past: Laurie's father had the same powers that she has. He used his powers to gain status in the world, and rape women without them even knowing it was rape (cus they thought they wanted him at the time). Eventually he wanted Gail Collins. But after she became pregnant with Laurie, his powers stopped working on her, so she found out the truth and left.
Present: Laurie gets downstairs to find that Rahne has disemboweled Josh.
Past: Rahne's father also influenced people, but through the Church. But he was also an evil man, and participated in many sins himself... including lust. One day a "lady of the night" became pregnant with his child, so after the lady died, he took the baby in as a ward of the Church. Rahne basically became cinderella, and lived with Reverand Craig as he beat religion into her, and taught her to be ashamed of herself.
Gail raised Laurie by herself, but worked long hours and multiple jobs to make enough money to support them, so Laurie didnt see her very much. Laurie found ways to entertain herself, such as puzzles and crosswords. She never reached out to people because she could see that her mother had been hurt before (very powerful panel of Laurie listening at her mother's bedroom door as Gail sits up at night crying).
When Rahne turned 14, she transformed into a wolf for the first time... and she loved it.
When Laurie turned 13, her pheromone powers activiated for the first time. She was popular, all the kids at the beach loved her... and she loved it.
But the reverand saw her transform, and told her she was evil. He tried to kill her.
Laurie's mother immediately understood what happened, and taught Laurie never to use her powers, because its not fair to control other people's feelings and emotions. Laurie withdrew even more from those around her. Unfortunately, that didnt work (flashback to the scene at the beginning of issue #2, where we see a school freak out because of Laurie's fear pheromones).
"Salvation came to Rahne in the form of a mother."
Dr. Moira MacTaggert sent Rahne to a special school where she met other mutants, and made friends.
"The solution to Laurie's problem came from her mother."
Gail sent Laurie to a special school where she met other mutants... but she didnt make any friends.
Rahne grew up with the New Mutants, but was still a shy girl who feared her feelings. She still feared the wolf inside her, and suffered alot (shot of Doug's grave).
Laurie didnt make any friends at Xavier's, and none of her roommates worked out. Angel Salvatore was affected by Laurie's pheromone powers. Cessily Kincaid was immune to those powers, but still didnt bond with Laurie.
Then, Rahne's worst nightmare came true: she was transformed permanantly into a beast. She felt all her emotions stronger than ever, and couldnt control any of them. Her powers terrified her.
Then, Laurie's worst nightmare came true: she also saw how terrifying her powers could be. There was a riot at Xavier's, where students attacked human visitors. Laurie hid in her room, but felt many emotions such as fear, anger, and panic. She wondered, was SHE causing the riot outdoors? Was that how powerful she was? Her powers terrified her.
Eventualy, Rahne regained control of her powers, and even confronted her father once and for all. But then a villain took away her powers. She was free of the wolf inside her forever... but it left her powerless to save her mother as the villain killed her.
Eventually, Laurie made a friend who refused to walk away. Through Sofia, she met David and Kevin, and was happy for the first time. But then a villain attacked her new friends. Laurie used her powers willingly for the first time ever, and she scared away the villains. But she also scared her friends, who could not help her when the villain killed her.
After her mother died, Rahne wandered around, confused, upset, and hurt. She came back to visit her friends, but she was changed. She angered her friends, and felt urges that she couldnt blame on the wolf.
"She was all but lost. Until she met Josh."
He gave her the wolf back, and she attacked him for it.
Laurie was stabbed through the heart.
"She was all but dead. Until she met Josh."
Josh healed Laurie, and she fell in love. Unfortunately, Josh was interested in someone else. Someone who just attacked him...
Present: Laurie uses her powers correctly to scare away Rahne. She runs off, and Laurie kneels by Josh's side, who just passed out...
Review
Honestly, I did NOT do this ish justice with a summary. It needs to be read. It was beautifully written, and really powerful at some points. The narration was excellent, and the art was great too. There wasnt much dialogue, and most of the story is in flashbacks, but it was so interesting to learn Laurie's origins in comparison to Rahne's. This is also a great ish that sums up Rahne's history as well.
Even though my summary is probably a bit confusing, the issue itself is so organic in the way Rahne's story blends into Laurie's. Its really great at the end where both stories meet each other and blend straight into the present.
And the cover was badass! Too bad Surge didnt even appear in the story... But the covers were all decided upon before Marvel pulled the crazy story switch, so each cover is supposed to match up with a story from the previous issue.

Lol, yeah. There was a girl with blonde hair floating along down the hallway on a flying cloud.
LOL yeah, she appeared quite often. It'd be hilarious if its the same character. I don't know much about the Initiative recruits, but is it possible any of them are mutants?
Great back-to-back reviews, Ricky!
I really enjoyed issue 11. The new Rahne didn't really gel with me, but this story helped ease some of that discomfort. I really liked Laurie during this series so it was really nice to see some of her life and its parallels to her rival for Josh's affections.

I don't think they've ever said the source of Cloud9's powers. Most of the rest have though.

They said it was possibly alien in nature.
Great summaries of the issues so far guys! I can't imagine how long they must take you.
I found #11 cool but I'm glad I got the entire run as 13 was coming out, just before Academy X started as it was pretty annoying that at the end of #11 we were still in the same place story wise as the end of #10 and if it had been my only issue for a month I'd have been pretty annoyed!

See, I thought that too at one point, but I loved the story so much, I felt like it had to be told, and any less than a whole issue wouldnt do it justice. It was great enough that I think it works as a whole issue, and is worth sacrificing a bit of story progression for its sake.

Synopsis
Josh is being rushed on a gourney to the Med Lab, being pushed by Dani, Karma, Laurie, Beast, and Nurse Annie. Annie doesnt want to believe Laurie when she says that it was Rahne who did this, but Karma raises the question of whether Josh would even be able to give Rahne her powers back. Beast then reveals that Josh is an Omega Level mutant, who can manipulate the body's functions on a genetic level. So yes, he's powerful enough to do that.
Laurie is not allowed inside the Med Lab once they arrive. She is freaking out because they're calling for Warren, and any other mutant healer they can find: medicine wont work here...
Dani suddenly realizes that she knows where Rahne is. With the return of Rahne's powers, Dani's telepathic link with her returns as well! Dani rushes off to talk to Rahne.
After Dani leaves, David, Sofia, and Noriko arrive. David and Sofia do theyre best to comfort Laurie, and Karma invites everyone inside to sit by Josh's side. Nori refuses to go in though, because David is there. Sofia speaks with Nori about Josh's condition, and how she's a bitch for not caring, even though Josh was the one who led everyone to find Nori. Noriko says its not about Josh, but David. David pretended to be Nori's friend, even though he judged her for using pills to control her powers. And now he's pretending to care about Josh, even though he judges Josh for everything he does as well.
Sofia then shows us why we love her in this scene, where she gives Nori a stern talkin' to.
Sofia: "Maybe this school is not the place for you. You obviously prefer life on your own, with no one to care for you or prevent you from making mistakes. You won't get that here at Xavier's. Here, we are a family. We take care of one another. We protect one another. And yes, we criticize one another. It is your choice whether or not you wish to be a part of this family."
In the Med Room, Laurie runs away in tears, because she knows Josh will die. Sofia runs after her. With just David and an unconscious Josh in the room now, Nori walks in. She and David talk, and David explains his relationship with Josh. Nori realizes David is just being the responsible one again. He acts like an older brother should act. Nori explains about her family and how she ran away.
Dani goes to the Salem Center Slums, to the area where they found Noriko. Rahne is harassing a homeless man, and then takes his spot! Dani shows up, and Rahne attacks her as well. Dani then beats the crap outa Rahne, and they have a little chat. Rahne doesnt think she can control the wolf anymore, but Dani knows better, and she doesnt need a telepathic link to tell her that. Rahne finally transforms back to her human form, and the two walk home.
Back at school, Laurie explains how she finally chose to use her powers and had some control over it. Sofia is happy for her, but over hear some bad news... Warren cant come back for another hour, but by then Josh will be dead. David and Nori think up a plan. They realized they dont need Warren, Josh is a healer too! They just need to wake him up. David is picking up all of Annie's and Beast's medical knowledge, so he knows what meds Josh is on, and how to undo the IV and everything else. They plan on taking Josh off his meds, and having Surge shock him awake.
Beast tries to stop them, but as usual, David is right. Nori shocks Josh awake, and he moans in agony, cus he's got a huge hole in his body. Laurie grabs his hand and places it on his chest. David offers some encouraging words.
David: "Don't leave us now, buddy...we were just starting to like you."
There's a blinding flash of light, and Josh wakes up... golden! He doesnt know why everyone's staring at him. Or why he's crying... and feels all goofy and happy (but that's Laurie's fault). This is when Nori quietly slips away... she doesnt do "kodak moments". Josh will have to get used to this new look, but the group is just happy that he's alive right now. He and Laurie hold hands and share a tender moment as he thanks her for saving his life.
Just then, Dani and Rahne walk in, and Josh forgets all about Laurie for the moment. He tries to mack on Rahne again, and calls himself "the man" for bringing her powers back. Rahne storms out, Dani rolls her eyes, and Josh is just confused.
David: "We definitely need to work on your people skills."
Later that evening, Dani comes back to talk to Josh alone. He apologizes for being such a hassal, and suggests that she let him switch to another advisor. But Dani wont have that. She explains that now, she is officially Josh's legal guardian. So if she's tough on him, its because thats how parents are supposed to act.
The next day, Dani and Nori walk down to The Grindstone to apologize to Luna. Surge explains what happened, and then asked to pay of her debt to Luna by working at the Grindstone. Just then, the group walks in and orders some drinks. Luna prepares them, and Nori delivers them to the laughing group at a table by the window.
This looks like the beginning of a beauuuutiful friendship.
Review
Lovely ish. Lots of character development. We really get how David's mind works, and his relationship with Josh solidifies. Nori begins to join the group in this ish, and we really see how amazing Sofia is. Rahne and Dani strengthen their bonds again as well. In the end, its a "feel good" issue, and it completely works.
The art was alright. Randolph isnt as nice at Baberi, but it still works. The action scene was kinda generic, but he shows emotion well.
Everything is tied up nice and pretty. A very good ending to the arc.

Synopsis
Introducing... Agent Justin Pierce! Agent Pierce is an FBI agent who works in the Metahuman Crimes division. He has come to The Cage in France to talk to his uncle... Donald Pierce! He says the FBI is making a deal with Pierce: They WONT kill him, and in return he will testify against a mutant who they believe to have committed murder. That mutant's name... Kevin Ford! The cybernetic man is pleased to hear that the FBI is going after one of Xavier's children...
Donald Pierce: "...I hear the school is quite vulnerable right now."
Splash page of the Xavier Institute. Rahne, Shan, and Dani watch in horror at the smoldering hole that used to be their home. Magneto destroyed it, and there was nothing they could do to stop him. These three helped in the evacuation of all the students, so they didnt fight Magneto. Just then, some familiar friends walk up... Its Samuel Guthrie, Roberto DaCosta, and Amara Aquilla!
As most of the group enjoys each other's company, Amara is a bitch, and is pretending not to like anyone. They talk about where they are now in life, and Roberto is surprised that Dani is a teacher, and not a fighter. Then again, Karma is surprised that Roberto is head of X-Corp LA, and not leader of the Hellfire Club.
Meanwhile, Donald Pierce is being moved from JFK International Airport in NYC to a secure location. But of course, things go awry, and he takes control of one of the transport vans. He kills everyone inside, and threatened to kill Justin Pierce, but since they're family, he doesnt.
After the original New Mutants reconnect for a while, Amara pulls a bitch move again, and demands that they all get some food, so Shan and Dani take everyone to the Grindstone. Roberto tries to hit on Lesbian Luna, but it doesnt go quite as he planned. We see more allusions to Luna and Shan going out (but they still arent yet). Dani tries to confront Amara about the way she's behaving, but theyre interupted by Justin Pierce, who came to talk to Dani about Kevin Ford, and the fact that Donald Pierce is lose.
Quick scene of Donald Pierce and his Reavers getting their act together at a hotel outside of Salem Center. Duncan (from issue 5) is there, and he wants to be the one to kill Josh.
Back to the students for the first time this ish. They are all holed up in some dingy building in Salem Center because the school was destroyed. We see Julian, Cessily, Santo, and Victor with their sleeping bags together on one side of the room, and David, Sofia, Laurie, Josh, and Nori on the other side of the room. And Bubblegum is reading a book in the corner! The title is "XXL". Bubblegum is freaking adorable.
Dani informs the kids about Pierce's break out, but she and Josh think up a plan. Pierce wont attack them with all the students and all the teachers together. They need to lure him out. So Josh will go to the Institute alone as bait, and then the New Mutants can take Pierce when he makes his move there. The New Mutants escort Josh to the school, and Roberto reminds Josh that Cannonball used to work for Pierce too: "Anything's possible".
Magma explains to Karma why she's acting like such a bitch. She lost control of her powers, and was too embarassed to contact her friends for help. And after she gained control, she was too ashamed that she didnt contact her friends about it. She just thinks she's a sucky friend. Which she is, kinda.
Rahne and Sam share a tender moment, and aaaaaallmost lock lips, but Pierce is here!
Wolfsbane pounces on some of the Reavers while Sunspot takes out some of their telepathic blocking helmets. Karma then takes out those Reavers. Rahne almost kills Duncan, but gains control of herself, and lets him go. Cannonball smashes through some of Pierce's cybernetics, and Dani takes him down. He tries to make small talk, but Magma throws some lava at him and takes him out for good.
Pierce shows up to clean up, and Dani tells Josh how proud she is of him: He ACTUALLY did as he was told, and stayed safe during the fight. The New Mutants escort him back to the X-Corp building where the kids are waiting for him. Sam offers Dani to join the X-Men, but she declines. After all, someone has to teach the next generation!
Review
Eh, it was alright. It was well written, and it flows very nicely, but it wasnt too interesting, because it was completely about the original New Mutants, and not our kids. It was cool to see the New Mutants fight together again, but the fight scene was pretty lackluster. This ish was mostly filler, because they needed to move up the stories when they got rid of Vic's suicide. They needed something before Academy X came. The art was nice though. The action sequences were very cool. But in the end, not a great ish cus it just doesnt mesh well with the rest of the series.

I liked this issue a lot, actually! I'm glad Pierce came back and as much as I dislike Magma she had a cool moment at the end. It was really nice to see all of the New Mutants back in action, actually. It made me wish to see as they originally planned to have the book starring the oldies plus two or three of the newbs.
*sigh*
This issue warmed my heart. It makes me all the more excited about Young X-Men (!!!!) but makes me sad again about New Warriors (which I've started to like).
The abandoned X-Corp building should've been their new hideout! It had a nice homely feeling to it.

It all begins here!
Or more accurately
It all continues from a year’s worth of both plot and character development from here!
It is a new semester at Xavier’s school for gifted youngsters and Emma Frost and Cyclops (both unnecessarily in costume) are giving the new kids a tour of the School. We can see that even though Jay had originally been given a tour of the school a few issues back in X-men, he was due for a refresh as he is seen standing with Quill, Dryad, some kid in a containment suit, and Bubblegum’s little sister, Boneygum. Cyclops begins to take roll, but is quickly interrupted by Emma, who tells him that introductions are in order. She informs the students that the school was founded as a safe haven for Mutants across the world. They are there to learn how to control their powers and be like normal teenagers. She introduces herself and her loverboy, Cyclops, telling the students that she is a telepath. Quill asks what Cyclops’s visor does only to be amazed as he quickly shoots down some projectiles Quill fired into the air. Cyclops is glad he has a fan and tells the students to remember that people fear what is different and from this day on, they will learn how to defend themselves.
Meanwhile, at the Grind Stone…
Luna reminds Nori that she is late for orientation. Nori responds by reminding her that she has already been going there for a while and has no need for such orientation. She wonders if Luna can just tell the admins that she had to stay late at work. No way jose, Luna replies. Nori needs to get a going, it’s a 15 minute walk back to campus.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/academyx_01_1jpg.jpg
AS nori runs onto school ground, she clumsily rubs against a statue of the phoenix logo, knocking a piece of the gauntlets off. Cyclops, slightly peeved, tells Nori that here people have rules and regulations. “Sir, yes sir!”, she replies in an asinine tone, which deserved her a slap of some sort. Cyclops brushes it off and goes to prepare for an assembly. Emma will continue the tour, he retorts as he leaves.
As the new kids follow Emma through the school, she points out the first floor has classrooms, faculty offices, and the ballroom which will also serve as an assembly hall. They enter the cafeteria where a few students are just sitting down to eat. Wait, is that Frida and Nysanne sitting down for a nice meal together?!?
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/academyx_01_2.jpg
They continue the tour and eventually end up in the backyard which contains a pool and a basketball court. But watch out! Both of those are secret exits for secret Jets! Also, Ms. Frost’s office is back there and her doors are always open. This is fun and all, but the real fun is below the building. Here, we see Cerebra, which only cool people like Emma are allowed to use, and the Danger Room. The danger room apparently creates some sort of danger that students have to overcome. Nori’s gauntlet once again hits the wall causing it to break even more. Nori hears this and in turn says a snarky remark about the danger room being even more dangerous with such mechanical defects. Emma turns to Nori, losing her temper, and tells her that she is growing weary of her wit.
Meanwhile back in Cyclops’s office, Cyclops sits at his Mac, looking up character bios on Comicvine or some database of some sort. He looks up Prodigy and learns his basic state.
David sits outside of Nori’s dorm reading a book and creepily waiting for her. He asks how orientation was. She says it was a “big stinkin’ waste of time”, and then asks him what he’s doing there. He just wanted to check in on her, but she doenst need to be checked in on every 5 minutes. She is a big girl, she will deal.
Nori realizes, by a suitcase on the accompanying bed, that she is no longer a loner as she has been placed with a mystery roommate. As she is about to dig through this new girl’s stuff, David stops her and tells her to wait it out. Nori shrugs it off and says he’s no fun, then asks him if he wants to listen to some music, but as she grabs her CD player
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/academyx_01_4.jpg
Which brings us to two footnotes
1. Was she expecting David to bi-pod with her? (foreshadow!)
2. Shouldn’t she have an ipod or something, she is Japanese for goodness sake, even homeless Japanese people have an iPod and a Nintendo DS.
she finds that the batteries are dead. Her gauntlets are supposed to stop her from absorbing energy from appliances, so this is bizarre. She tries to jump start it but to no avail. David says screw the music, wanna go eat with my buddies Josh, Sofia, and Laurie? Nori comments that she isn’t sure if she really fits in with David’s little club, but he tells her that they aren’t a club( because Nori actually thought they were a school sanctioned group….)
Cyclops is now looking up info on Sofia who is 16. It seems she has wind powers!
In the cafeteria, Sofia compliments Noriko on speaking English so well, and asks how long she’s been in this country. Nori says she ran away from home at thirteen, came to the States then, and lived on the streets till she came to the Institute at age 17 (we’re the same age!). She then tells Sofia that her accent is barely noticeable, considering she’s only been here… what? Only a year? Sofia says that her father insisted she learn fast. He insisted on a lot of things. Nori says fathers always do. (aw bonding over controlling dads).
Cyclops’s computer screen now shows a picture of Laurie Collins who is only 15 (which I just realized) and can somewhat control emotion through the use of pheromones.
Laurie attempts to ask Josh to go to the lake with him, but is DENIED! Josh wants to play some hoops with his bff, David. Sofia blows on Laurie, commenting on the fact that she appeared “amorous” and that she didn’t want to win Josh’s heart with her powers. Josh tells Dave he can just leech off of his b-ball skillz but before he can trash talk much more, the lights begin to dim.
Back in Cyclops’s office…again..Scott’s computer now shows a picture of Josh Foley, who is 16 and an omega class healer.
While in the caferteria, The lights go back on and Sofia says it is normal again. Nori wonders if she could be the cause of the power surge (heh). She looks down at her gauntlet and realizes that she is missing a piece. Suddenly the room goes dark again, and she says that it had to be her. Across the cafeteria, a student announces a food fight, but they are interrupted by a telepathic message from Emma Frost asking that they please remain calm. There seems to have been a power outage in the cafeteria, but the emergency lighting should be on in a moment. As the lights turn on, the other students in the cafeteria look around the room, covered in food.
Nori realizes that the noise she heard in the danger room was actually her regulator knob falling off and is determined to go find it. She only needs a faculty keycard to get into. Josh says David can just use his telepathy to find out where one of them keeps it, but David reminds him that it doesn’t work that way. It would have to be someone who organizes their office meticulously. Obsessively, even. Someone anal retentive, and ding ding ding
Just then, Scott Sum Sum walks into the the cafeteria
“I think we have a winner”
Summers left his door unlocked. David points to the desk where the keycard was cleverly hidden (who would have thought of that). Just then, Sofia hears on the wind that Cyclops returning to his office, so they all start to leave. Meddling David notices something on the computer screen, but Josh tells him to get a movin.

Once the get into the Danger Room, Noria releases the charge she has been holding all day. This jump starts a program causing massive Sentinels and generic mutant hating soldiers to appear on all sides of the kids.
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g55/mrcassandranova/academyx_01_3.jpg
Josh announces that an X-Men training session has started, and tells the others not to panic. He then asks David if he is absorbing all the fighting techniques of the guys surrounding them, but David tells him they aren’t real. His power is telepathic and they don’t have minds. David then points out that they should be programmed to respond like real humans, so he tells Laurie to use her fear pheromones. She says it shouldn’t be too hard because she’s feeling pretty scared right now, but David tells her not to be. He tells her that if the controls are working, there should be safety protocols in place.
JUST KIDDING
As David tells Sofia to help move the pheromones with her wind powers, he gets kablamed through the shoulder by a soldier. Josh rushes over and tells Laurie and Sofia that he can heal David, so they should get the soldiers out of the fight. As Laurie and Sofia get to work blowing pheromones at the soldiers, Nori mentions that someone is gonna have to take care of the big guys, referring to the huge sentinels looming over their heads. As she gets close to one of them, it tries to blast her, but it suffers a power failure as Nori absorbs electricity from it, mentioning, first normally and progressively faster, that she just got rid of a full charge and now she’s getting it right back.
The soldiers all start freaking out as the pheromones get blown at them all, and Nori says she wasn’t planning on keeping this charge as she blasts the remaining sentinel. Off to the side of the action, Josh heals David, who thanks him, and Josh tells him to just remember he owes him one. Sofia then flies up to the control room and shuts off the program. David tells Nori he found her knob, and she groans that she is drained. As Sofia drops down, she tells Laurie that they make an excellent team, and Laurie agrees that their powers do work well together.
Nori says that this should fix it (since sticking pieces back together using force usually does the trick), but says she’ll get her gauntlets looked at in a few days, once the cafeteria incident has blown over. She thanks the group and tells them that they really didn’t have to help her out. Of course we did, says Sofia, we are your friends!
At the same time, In Cyclops’s office…again…for like the 6th time on the screen is a picture of Noriko Ashida, who is 17. She can do electric stuff, but only if she is wearing these big bulky gauntlets to help her contain and control.
David tells his friends what he actually saw on the computer screen. It appears that Cyclops is assigning students onto squads and it looks like he is going to break up the new mutants!
To be continued.

Review: This issue was nice as a continuation of New Mutants and as a beginning for new readers. It was crazy packed full and seemed longer than the standard 23 pages. And even though Nori looks asianless, I have decided that I really enjoy Green's cartoonish representation of the characters. There were some really pretty pictures. I also really enjoyed that Nori's jeans do not have a flap to cover the zipper on the cover. That is classy

This ish was defff editorially mandated. Half the issue was a tour and an introduction to what the school was all about. The art was pretty though. I like how we get to see how snarky Nori is, but its kind of silly that the kids would think they would get in trouble for Nori's gauntlets to break. The fight seemed kinda forced, but again, I think alot of this ish was editorially mandated. All the stuff that is part of the ongoing plot was in the background (Cyke preparing an assembly, and the files on his computer).
Either way, I really liked Nori in this ish. Yay for non emo and angsty Noriko! It seems like she's quite happy once she's clean and not homeless.

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm glad we have our own N&C expert to help clear things up and tell us what went on behind the scenes.
If you guys have questions, I am more than happy to answer, though Ricky's doing a fine job so far...
Love this thread. I haven't read any of our X-Men stuff since we left the book, so it's fun to read these back and then see what you guys thought.
Nice to see some affection for our stuff. After a couple of years and a pretty successful follow-up run by C & C, it gets easy to think our run was pretty much reviled.

Nunzio!! Its so good to see you here! Thanks for stopping by!! :) Glad I havent botched anything up so far, lol.
And no WAY!! People still love New Mutants and Academy X. Its just got to be thought of as different from C&C's run, which it was. Alot of people have made comments about how they loved both runs for different reasons.
Rest assured, you have BIG fans in this thread, and at this forum. :)

I think New X-Men will always have a polarizing effect, and part of that effect will always keep you guys having fans of the book and more importantly, the characters.
I freaking love Hellion and Sofia, even more than some of my "veteran" favorites now. Some may say I'm a little obsessed! LOL!
Anyway, thanks for the awesomeness!
I know you guys mentioned other plans you've had in the past, but do you think Sofia would've ever eventually joined up with the Hellions? I'd love to hear the answer to this. My impression was that it was a dropped plot point. Emma would have tried to steal Sofia away from Dani, but I dont think we ever saw it happen. I think it was adjusted to issue #6. We'll see what happens there when we review it!
I would have liked to see Specter join the Hellions, though Sofia would have been cool too.
Spectre would have joined the Hellions if N&C had stayed on the book post M-Day. All the squads would have gotten 7 members instead of 6, so there would have been a shake up. X-23 was joining the New Mutants, and Spectre was joining the Hellions. He actually almost made it into the Hellions mini.

Really? Wow. But if each squad would have 7 members, some squads would have had to disband, right? Do we know about any other squads 7th members?
I really can't see Laura on the New Mutants.

Emma Frost was a character that I did not really like in the first part of Academy X. Until the David arc, she seemed petty and annoying. I always hoped she would fade into obscurity in this book. It wasn't till the last pages of the David arc that I like her status as supporting character.

We start off in the danger room, after the gang's little unauthorized "training" session. Everyone is still in complete shock and no one can believe what David has told them because it just can't be true. Splitting them up? Who do they think they are- the faculty? While being split up is part of the issue, which has sent David into a tizzy, the fact that he feels they expect him to become an X-Man is extremely unsettling. He didn't come to the school for that. But really, silly, why did you think you were brought there? To learn? Bahaha. -ahem- Anyways, as Josh gives his friends a pat on the back for their victory against the sentinels and soldiers, saying that they worked so well together, it would be stupid to split them up. Some people don't agree with him, however. Enter: Julian Keller. Now, unlike the rest of you, I didn’t have the pleasure of reading New Mutants Vol 2; Academy X was my first comic ever. Not to be completely ignorant, I did do some research on it, but I could never find why Julian hated Josh so much, and vice versa. I do now, of course, but back then, I seriously thought he was just being an ass.
Not one to be the comforting type, at least not to Josh and his "loser friends", Julian confirms the gangs fears by telling them that they were going to be split up. How would he know? Oh yeah, because Miss. Frost is his advisor, and he is her favorite student. There isn’t anything about anything that she doesn’t tell him. Of course David and Company wouldn’t know, because Dani is lame. David and Josh aren’t into Jules dissing their advisor, however, and attempt to shut him up with words and a shove. Ew, gross! Josh touched him! A tele-blast is just what he needs, apparently, and Julian delivers. To prove that they are not pushovers, Sofia subdues the egotistical bully with the wonders of the wind. Hormones raging, Julian is coaxed into a more...willing to forget mood by Sofia- thank God for sexy accents, right? Their secret is safe! (And the sexual tension is high...)
Home free now, David seriously wants to talk to Danielle about this little rearrangement. Nori isn’t into it, since Miss. Moonstar is not her advisor. Not like it matters, of course. Walking into her office, the crew sees that she is a little preoccupied with trying to find something, or someone, in a junkyard. Her hair is blue...but that really has nothing to do with anything- it just kinda bugged me. The group says ‘kay, and leave Mirage to her call. Josh is upset still. He wanted to know what was happening, and now! “Oh sure. ‘Miss Moonstar will know! She’ll take care of everything!” Or not! Oh wait, it was already sarcastic...
Up next, we get to see Dust. I had no idea who she was aside from a Muslim girl, which I got from the burqa and various sites, and also a mutant with a sand-form, solely from the various sites. I instantly took a liking to her, from the first step she took in the room. And I loved, and still do love, her name! Sooraya! Just say it out loud. Sooraya! Sadly, this is where my dislike of Nori started. Her rude comments just bugged the crap outta me. For instance, Sooraya didn’t catch her name; well guess what, Nori didn’t throw it! Snaps! Then she instantly begins to, in what I view, bash the poor girl because she (Dust) doesn’t like her (Nori's) music nor did she (Nori) like the fact that she (Dust) covered herself from head to toe. I dunno if anyone else took it this way, but Surge was a total bully- her facial expressions didn’t let me think she was just teasing Soo playfully. Attacked, Dust tries to explain to Noriko about what the burqa is about- modesty. But Nori also sees it as an attack; how so, I don’t really know. But she feels like her new roomie is judging her, lecturing her, and setting her back fifty years. She walks out the door, slamming it behind her. Sooraya looks sad.
I definitely said, “Oh no she didn’t it,” out loud after that page, though. xD
This night just couldn't possibly get any worse for "poor" Nori, could it? Actually, I lied. It could! And does! Mr. Summers, walking around in uniform, just so happened to be looking for Miss Ashida, who should be heading to bed, it's almost curfew, girl! But, she just had to get some air because Summers gave her a religious nut for a roommate! PAUSE!
Okay, what? Where did that come from? I thought Sooraya was just a woman-setter-backer? Siiiiigh. Nori bugged me for quite a while after that.
ANYWAYS, Cyke doesn’t really care- what he really wants is his keycard back. SNAPS! Looks like the kids forgot to return it, since their minds were elsewhere at the time. And apparently they didn’t notice the cameras, either. Double SNAPS! Luckily they aren’t in trouble- Scott was impressed. The pair then turn their attention to Nori’s gauntlets- which are big, clunky, ugly, fragile, and unreliable. Cyke decides to bring up her druggie past, and then warns her that she may never learn to control her powers- just like he can’t- so she might have to wear those things forever. Comforting, right? But with a little convincing, Gazer Beam manages to get Nori to give the gloves another go- though fat chance on the roommate, she says.
“I still don’t like you, you know.”
“You don’t have to. I’m still in charge.”
Morning time now! And a quick switch to David and Josh, who are talking about the breakup. David says that if it is true, he is leaving. He says he’ll tell Dani tomorrow, though Josh will only believe it when he sees it. You see, David has a lil’ crush on Moonstar- awww. Actually, my first reaction was “ewww”- I wasn’t sure how old Danielle was, but I figured she had to be at least a little older than him to be a teacher. But Brain Boy isn’t budging on his decision- he says he will tell her tomorrow.
The next morning, that bully Jully decides to talk to new student Josh Guthrie. Actually, Jay Guthrie- not only is Josh a chump’s name, but also the name of an old life. Julian doesn’t seem particularly interested, and is only talking to him because they both have Miss Frost as an advisor. Oh, and knowing what codename he wanted would be a plus, too. Jay picks Icarus, which I got because of the wings. His more depressing reason was really, um, depressing. But the really real real reason Jules started talking to Jay was because they needed another guy for their four v four basketball game against the loser crew. Julian, Cessily, Santo, and Jay v Josh, David, Sofia, and Laurie. Actually, Jay isn’t going to play because 1- he doesn’t like basketball, and 2- he wasn’t even asked. Crap! 4 v 3- luckily Laurie isn’t athletic, so she’ll sit out, too. The game commences, powers are used, the J.S.D group loses. Kinda sad, but kinda pointless. A good way to meet Jay though, I suppose.
Today is the day that David, and the rest of the group too, are going to talk to Dani about the switcherooni the school is trying to play on them. And what luck- Moonstar, who’s hair is less blue this time around, just sent for them. She tells them that, yes, they are being split into different squads. But they are her kids and she wasn’t about to let them be split apart. Dave reiterates that he didn’t come to the school to become an X-Man, but his love for Dani doesn’t let him leave. In fact, the word leave doesn’t even come up! I agree with Josh, “Ha! You sure told her, David!” Before they leave, they are given the template for their costumes! Not super hero costumes, but training costumes. Nori is not wearing tights, David wants a monitor in his glasses, and Josh wants to show off his arms- interesting choices!
Finally, Monday has arrived and the assembly has started. Cyclops is making his grandiose speech, while Dani commends her group on looking great. Oh, and also that right now they are short a member, but she is working on it. The junkyard, perhaps? *shrug* Anyways, she tells them that now they should listen to Cyclops. Little does she seem to realize that she has been preventing the kids from listening to him, who’s been talking about who knows what- thanks a lot Moonstar! It could’ve seriously been important.
But I doubt it.

From what we’re told, not all of the students have been put into squads yet, but everyone will be by the end of the month. Because J.S.D.L.N are soo concerned about their codenames, which they have completely forgotten about, we are forced to ignore the codenames of Cyclops’s own team, the Corsairs.
Ugh. Now it’s Miss. Frost’s turn to introduce her squad.
Julian Keller - Hellion - I didn’t understand this one at the time.
Cessily Kincaid - Mercury - Oh wow. Original.
Santo Vaccarro - Rockslide - Again- such originality!
Jay Guthrie - Icarus - It fits nicely. And it isn’t something lame like Feather Back or Redwing.
Sooraya Qadir - Dust - Though I love her, this team doesn’t really seem to be filled with creative minds.
Brian Cruz - Tag - I could only just imagine what his power was.
And their squad’s name? THE HELLIONS! Oh. Wow. Hellion and the Hellions. AWESOME!
Next is Dani, who delivers a little speech about her days as a New Mutant. But let’s get onto the codenames- that’s what I was interested in!
David Alleyne - Prodigy - I liked it. Though his outfit is funny.
Sofia Mantega - Wind Dancer - I was totally reminded of those fairy princesses that flew around when you pulled the strings. I, of course, had the more manly Dragon Riders.
Noriko Ashida - Surge - (she doesn't comment, she doesn't get a comment)
Laurie Collins - Wallflower - Kinda seemed backhanded to me. But I loved it.
Josh Foley - Elixir - Good, good. And nice arms! “We’re super heroes!”
Squad name? The NEW MUTANTS! Yaaay. Huzzaaaah. Woooo! End of the issue.

Review: I liked the issue. Yeah, it was slow at times, but it was like, my second comic, so I have no room to question it. It was nice to meet more of the characters, like Sooraya and Jay and the like. There wasn’t a lot of action but I wasn’t expecting any. Dani being so close to her kids was nice to see. And even Cyclops minor bonding experience with Nori. All and all, good issue! 'Cept Nori's Sooraya hate. >_>

Great summery, Fro!!! I love this issue.
Ew, gross! Josh touched him! A tele-blast is just what he needs, apparently, and Julian delivers.
Oh yeah!!! Josh totally had that coming!!! Go Julian!!!

LMAO! Great review, FroFro!
I thought it was a cute issue, but Laurie started going downhill here. I hated how all she did was constantly rub one out for Josh in the background. It was rather annoying.
The art was pretty, but rather bland (David and Nori and Cessily looked great though) but my main issue was with how Dani looked younger than all her kids. :?
Favorite scene (of course) for me was:

I remember really liking Nori back then.
I think she was my favorite character/New X-Man at the time (I was like...Sofia who????). I didn't like her comments to Sooraya, but I did like the conflict that it brought and I could see Nori's point of view (and I can maybe see how it ties into her family, given later by her mom's passiveness to her father's aggressiveness).
Plus, she was getting an interesting relationship with Cyclops (which again, I'm seeing how its evolved to in Children of X-Men!).
I thought she was the steak's potato back in the day. *sigh*
Anyway, I'm just glad six-issue arcs are largely out the door.

OK. Discussion... I think this ish was still in the "introduction to new readers phase" because its kinda slow. We had the basketball game to show the rivalry between the to-be-Hellions and the to-be-New Mutants. I liked Jay's introdution alot though.
About Dust and Surge, yeah, Surge comes off as uber abraisive. Which she is. She has her own mind, and does rebel against the norm, so I think her seeing Dust dress that way, which from her perspective is just a sign of how weak Dust is, triggered all of her Nori-ness. Also, given her family history (which comes up in the next arc) it also makes alot of sense.
I also liked the secret musings about the last team member. Who could it be?? Hmmm...
So, I still dont like Wind Dancer as a codename. I'm just not really a fan. I LOVE her as a character, but I think she just needed something a little cooler, since she is so cool. Something like "Zephyr" would have been cool.

You know, going back and reading NM and Academy X, I got the sense that N&C were hitting their stride just as they were taken off the book. The Hellions mini is by far my favorite of their works on the characters, maybe because they had a stable artist for a full story (something rare in Academy X) or maybe because it focused and humanized the Hellions a bit more than we saw in the core book. Either way, I look back on the first arc "Choosing Sides" as being a bit too slow in pace for my tastes. It has some of my favorite character moments, but it doesn't really cut to the chase until issue 4, and in a six issue arc thats a lot of introduction and exposition.

Yeah, its a shame they couldn't have a more action-packed fresh start to the series. It sucks because we already got our stretched out debut in "New Mutants" and with a relaunch, we have one again but instead of learning about the characters there has to be a re-set-up for the school.
Although the retitling probably added sales, I really felt like the relaunch did more harm than good.

I agree. These first four issues drag on so much and to make matters worse it has a different artist every other issue (and the second artist, next issue's Staz Johnson, was extremely rushed).
The book started to really pick up IMO at around issue 9? (Haunted and Choosing Sides were absolutely my least favorite arcs along with Mercury Rising) with Too Much Information and then I definitely started to feel the New Mutants v.2 vibe again. Well except for the Rahne/Josh/Laurie love triangle which still bugs the hell out of me re-reading it (but I'm getting ahead of the thread here, lol!).
Its really weird that the book picks up and then the creative team changes not once but twice (with C&C) and also with a crossover!

I just reread the issue again
I like how we were always talking about wind powers
being a weak tk knockoff
and then Sofia specifically says the opossite.
Also I really enjoyed the budding Surge Cyclops relationship
which C&C carried on
And I really dont like Rocksildes proportions here

You think the New Mutants squad were dorks? I didnt see that at all.
Elixir was popular, attractive, athletic, and powerful. He was also the student that bonded with the cool, hot, badass, crazy awesome Wolfsbane from New Mutants.
Sofia was also attractive and poweful. She was rediculously outgoing and friendly. In the beginning of New Mutants, everyone latched on to her right away.
Surge was badass and HOT. She was independent and a rebel.
Icarus was dreamy. He was the cool musician loner kid. Every school has one. He wasnt a dork though. He was just too cool for most people.
Prodigy might come off as a dork to some people, cus he studied so much, but he really was pretty badass at times. The only ones who called him a dork were Josh and Julian. Josh was teasing, and Julian was trying to hurt him. His dialogue and mannerisms were never nerdy or dorky.
Wallflower is really the only "dorky" one I see in this group. She was an outcast for so long. She was the girl with no friends.
I dont think the New Mutants were outcasts though. We didnt see them interact with other squads so much, but thats just cus they were close friends (and the main characters). As we saw from their friendships with Anole and a few other select non-New Mutants, they definitely had friends outside of their squad.

Prodigy and Wallflower leading the way in that regard.
Josh, while I love the character, was just starving for attention.
Sofia had a nice grasp on her powers, but she had no faith in her ability to lead... that lead to a lot of issues with the squad.
Icarus was, is, and will forever be a lame emo kid. Worst. Guthrie. Ever.
Nori, at this time, was uber-hot and awesome. She still is, but she became a lot more neurotic after she was put in charge.
There's a reason the Hellions got their mini and made the cut after HoM, its because overall they were more interesting and had more appeal.
But don't listen to me, you might remember me cheering the deaths of Laurie and Jay over on comixfan when C&C iced them... so its not like I was a huge fan of their characters to begin with.

I don't mean 'dorks' in a derogatory way necessarily, but they weren't exactly the Hellions of the school either.
I mean...Sofia did knock down a couple of people on her first day in Flight class. People don't tend to forget those types of things!

This issue starts out with an Elixir/Hellion confrontation (and by extension a New Mutants/Hellions fight). I think it's important to note that Elixir now has a bit of a mullet. We also see Rockslide use his powers which I've always hated. I don't know what the consensus is, but the whole "body part throwing" always made me die a little inside. Anyways, a couple of things: Icarus leaves because he says he has no beef with the new mutants (which prompts Hellion to try and replace him with Sofia..also on the next page be prepared to see the biggest forehead ever on Sofia), we also see old bitchy Mercury, which I do not enjoy anymore..in retrospective I think the best thing she ever said was the whole "I love you Julian, but we need to grow up" because she comes across as extremely childish here, and finally Surge is a total bitch to Dust. STFU Surge.
Anyways, inside Dani is fighting with Emma about naming the Squad the Hellions when Julian's codename is already Hellion. Than she brings up that she doesn't buy the whole" reformed villain" and Emma suggest that she can leave the institute (OMG EMMA, IS THIS WHY YOU THREW HER OUT POST HoM?). Rhane then turns into a horrible monster thing and attacks Emma. Cyclops however stops her and stands up for Emma clarifying that they are headmasters of the school so the rest have to deal. During his speech he looks out the window and sees the fight going on outside.
He goes outside where we see that Mullet Elixir is sitting on Rockslide's hand. The fact that I have to type out things like " Mullet Elixir is sitting on Rockslide's hand" is another reason why I hated Rockslide's power. Anyways, Cyclops tells them that both squads are now part of the first field day exercise ... and then tells Mr. Vacarro to put his hand back on.
Emma notices that Dani's squad is short a member, and Dani says that she has someone in mind but needs Emma's help.
Cut to the garage, where Elixir and Rahne are making out until Rahne comes to terms with the fact that she is a teacher and it's wrong..and breaks up with Elixir (kinda)
Back at Cerebro, Emma and Dani are looking for the new member, Wither. They find him in New York working in a dump. Or living there. Whatever. Dani tries to convince him to come back but past mistakes come to bite her in the ass, as Wither doesn't think he will ever control his death touch...y'know since a certain someone scared him into thinking he was a danger to everyone. Emma takes charge and manages to convince him to come back. There's a cute little scene where we find out that Kevin has been practicing controling his powers on animals... wait did I say cute? I meant creepy.
Kevin reunites with his New Mutants friends and immediately the tension builds up between Kevin and Josh. Kevin chooses his codename Wither and Dani needs to choose a leader now. She inititaly goes for David but he doesn't want leadership..so she goes for J Lo..or rather Sofia.
Field Day! They have to find an object somewhere on campus! The Hellions run off as the New Mutants have trouble following their leader's orders since Sofia is pretty much the suck. David wants to give her some tips but Sofia isn't having it. He didn't want the leadership so he needs to shut his trap-o. Surge then follows orders and runs off to search all the school for something. Wow, even I could have come up with better than that.
Cessily turns into a metal drop and spies on the conversation between the Advisors and finds out that what they're looking for is in the middle of the hedge maze. Icarus leaves with this information.
At the same time Surge finds a memo that L.H. is in the middle of the maze and the New Mutants run towards the maze only to hit.... Rockslide AND HIS 2 ARMS RIGHT BESIDE HIM BUT NOT ATTACHED TO HIS BODY. I can NOT stress enough how much I hated his power.
What will happen now? Will they be able to go around his arms? Find out next issue!

Review: Ok so this issue. I guess overall I disliked it. But mostly for the art. The art was incredibly weak overall, even though the story was easy to follow through the art the characters were incredibly inconsistent and there were some panels which were the equivalent of my soul getting kick in it's privates. The writing was not bad, I wish Rockslide didn't use his powers like that. I think it's very unimaginative, or.. maybe it's imaginative but I just hated it. Another problem I had with the writing is the constant Emma/Dani bickering. It was much more entertaining with Kitty and written by Joss Whedon. I don't mind them being cold to each other at all..since to me that's the only thing that would make sense. But Dani is practically my age..I can be civil to people I don't like, especially when I need their help. Other than that, there are some very good moments like the whole Wither animal/lumber thing. And I also like how Rahne seemed to be a bit more mature at this point.
Anyways I give it a C+, mostly because of the art.

I overall did NOT like this issue. As big as a fan as I was of the characters, I was contemplating dropping the series.
CONS:
The art was a horrendous turn for the worst. The kids became long legged creatures that lept at you at night and overall the look just felt...raggedy.
I really did not like the whole field day exercise, either. It neither supported the fun dynamic N&C had going nor did it have any authentic action going on. Just two rival squads battling for the House Cup.
PROS:
I really liked how Emma and Dani worked together to recruit Kevin.
Emma: "Clearly, I am not the only one seeking redemption."
I wish they would've built their team together so that there would be more of a justified reason for conflict than just because there are lines pre-drawn in the sand (and it was soooo Josh's fault for starting that argument anyway! Go be a jerk, Jules!).
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
I wish Cessily would've brought out her inner bitch more, but I also wish we could've seen more of Cessily and Laurie's failed roomateship to justify Mercury's attittude.

Im pissy today
so I will try to only say positive things about this issue
1. Starting on the cover, I really enjoy how somehow surge's nipples
are unseen even though there is a freakin large chunk out of her
costume.
2. Cyclops likes cake
3. Sofia's pink outfit at least gave me some humor in that scene...
4. I know a lot of people really didn't like the art, and I didn't either, but I think this issue is one of the only times that Dani's teacher costume
looked really sexy
5. I think it was nice for David to give Wither his nice white jacket.
Its hard to brood without a trench coat

Yeah Dani and Emma didn't look bad. Its probably my favorite version of them from all of N&C's artists (minus Josh Middleton and Clay Henry).
This was a slightly cute, slightly creepy panel:

I didn't really like issue 4 so I don't think it would translate well if I did it.
