He is litterly frightened of X-23, and is no where to as cocky as before. I am not going to go scan the scenes, but he was definetly making the changes in that story arc, and it makes alot of sense with what all has gone on before.

But every student handled it in a very different way.

its not as prominent this season, but it was last year. Chicago overpowers the rest of the fashion captiols? Not really lol, Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles are bigger when it comes to fashion than Chicago.

lol you have some, but the majority of High Fashion Designers are based out of New York City. Los Angeles also does this (but they do a big deal of Ready to Wear as well). Dallas is for the High End Department Stores, such as Neiman Marcus, and we do have alot of different things. And then Atlanta is just like a big mixture lol, but no where close to NYC.

There wasn't anyone from either of those two squads I disliked. Prodigy and Hellion have been my 1-2 since the begining of the series. I was never big on Wallflower or Wind Dancer, or any of the other Hellions until the mini. I've always really liked Surge and Elixir and I grew to love Rockslide under C&C. The rest I like but wouldn't go out of my way to buy most books for.

I actually like the Hellions more than New Mutants though Wind Dancer and Wallflower were interesting characters. My most favorite character is Wither. He was the type of mutant who an awesome power but truly hated and feared it. He hated it because it hurt the people he loved(His dad and Wallflower) and he feared it because whenever he used his power, it felt good and he fears that he might enjoy using it. Plus he was an artist. Man, I really miss him...

My least favorites were David, Jay and Rockslide. Tag I only liked cuz he was Puerto Rican, but he was in the middle. My favorites were Kevin and Cessily, I always hoped they'd work it out; well more like Kevin would realize was he was missing out on all this time.

Elixir was always my favorite. I'd say that I liked the New Mutants more. I liked Sofia and Laurie. Prodigy fluctuated with me (sometimes I liked him, other times I didn't). Surge I was undecided on for a while, but she is currently in the "characters I dislike" category. I disliked Icarus.

Of the Hellions, I liked Hellion, whom I felt brought an interesting dynamic to the book. As for the rest, I either did not care (Mercury, Dust, Tag), or disliked (Wither, Rockslide). Eventually, Mercury was promoted to the "characters I like" category, and Rockslide was promoted to the "don't particularly care for, but is at least fairly entertaining" category.

Guggenheim did say the roster will be changing pretty quickly, so I would imagine the cast will be redone completely, or he will start to add more of everyone's favorites into the Roster, as he goes.

I really believe that Young X-Men is less a New X-Men continuation and more a New X-Men/New Mutants hybrid.

As it is the only kids who could be added for the next 6 months are prodigy, Elixir, Hellion, and Anole. I think Elixir and Anole are the most likely for Young X-men, Prodigy is probably going to Limbo for a while. I think Hellion will make an appearance in X-Force.

Actually I think Elixir is #2 on the "taking a trip to limbo list" behind Prodigy. His healing power is a problem for writers. My only hope is his connection to Dani might get him into Young X-Men.

As for Hellion my believe that he'll be in X-Force has developed from a few comments from Yost and Kyle and the simple belief that I'm sure he'll be showing up somewhere soon. But I have a worst case scenario for him that I hope doesn't end up being the case.

My favorites are Hellion and Wind Dancer, though once upon a time (circa New Mutants vol. 2) I also liked Wallflower a lot, too. I used to dislike Wither, but through this thread and re-reading my issues I totally love him now!

I absolutely hated Jay. I dreaded his editorially driven place onto the book and N&C sadly couldn't change my mind. I also really dislike Rockslide, but I liked him for a couple of issues under C&C.

Dust is either really boring or can carry a soft/intense aura that works when it works.

Surge I liked until she got with David.

Tag I liked ok but his power was the worst.

I love Elixir's origin as a Reaver and only got to liking him again during Quest for Magik.

They wanted to explore his healing powers and the fact that he tried to commit suicide. But Marvel wouldnt let them use the word "suicide" at all. They were going to do a story where Jay cuts himself, knowing he would always heal, and then one day realizing that his healing powers ran out.

Honestly, I'm glad they didn't go through with it. I think a suicide would be a very heavy story, but there was just so much angst on the sidelines I don't know if I would've been into it.

Actually the Skin appearance is the very problem with being stuck in limbo. You become potential cannon fodder when a writer wants to throw in a known character for shocking death and the like.

I actually have no problem with Sofia in New Warriors. Is her portrayal perfect? Nah, but it's not horrible either. And if she had spent too much more time in limbo chances were she'd lose any chance of being a major character.

And if Hellion or Prodigy were to join X-Force, it wouldn't be much different than most of C&C's run. At least you have two writers who know the characters and could hopefully shape an ideal way to have them in the series.

I actually really do agree with you. If you've read X-Force #1 I really couldn't see any of the kids other than X-23 being involved in the book in that way. But that doesn't mean there couldn't be other roles in the book for them. Interesting point. I had sort of written out X-force as a possibility for the kids, but when you put it that way, Prodigy and/or Hellion do not seem that farfetched.

This is the major one though. X-23 isn't a very emotional character and one of the few things she has gotten emotional about is Hellion.

There isn't any, but it is safe to assume he is alive. If he was dead, they would have done it during the crossover. This is C&C, when have they EVER beaten around the bush concerning death? If he was really dead, he would have died in a sudden and flashy manner.

C&C have stated in interviews and X-Positions and stuff that the cast will get larger, and not everyone will be a killing character just like the current four are.

I don't think so. Most of the original New Mutants are supposed to be in the Brotherhood.
The latest solit as good as stated that Dani and Magma are part of the new Brotherhood. And since the rest of the New Mutants are appearing as well, its most likely that they will also be part of the Brotherhood.

Well, Anole, Gentle, and Surge will show up in Divided We Stand. Pixie is in the Free Comic Book Day comic, and Hellion hasnt been stated to show up anywhere. Prodigy didnt want to be a hero at first, but he made it explicitly clear to Noriko in #43 that in light of recent events, he stands with the X-Men no matter what. He knows how useful he is, and he knows he has an obligation to use his powers to help others.

I doubt we'll see the background kids. I dont know whats up with Elixir, but I'd really like to see him somewhere. Problem is, he's problematic for writers.

Problematic for writers? He is not that overpowered. He has to be close in order to heal someone, and close in order to hurt someone. There have been way more overpowered characters regularly featured in other books, or still regularly featured.

Nightcrawler was not going to die. Just like I knew that Cyclops, Emma, and others were not going to die.

Hellion, ok, he is pretty much the reason they knocked out Elixir. They wanted to create "drama" by leaving his fate in doubt. Of course, his fate really was not in doubt, because if they were going to kill him, they could have just gone ahead and got it over with. Elixir can't revive people. They were not going to kill Hellion, but they wanted Surge and X-23 to feel like crap, so they did the next best thing. As long as writers do not obsessively use this plot device, Elixir is not that huge of a problem.

Its easy to create uncertainty, even with Elixir around. He cannot be next to everyone at all times, afterall.

Elixir is problematic.
Example: Uncanny, Bru wanted Kurt to have a can due to his injury. With Elixir around that a plothole. Elixir would have healed that up.

With Elixir aroung you can't logically have any long term injuries (such as Professor X's legs) so it knocks out a plot device.

So a writer has to gage his interest in the character against what he'll lose from having him around at his current power level.

The other side of his power is a problem too, his death touch. You have character who can logically kill any organic being without significant difficulty. That can be a problem, case in point X-MEN WWH.

But his real problem came from being at the mansion because then he affected every book based out there. So even though Craig and Chris knew how to use him, it also affected every story Bru, Mike, Joss, and Gage wanted to tell. Having him with a team that isn't based in the mansion would be ideal.

I didnt think about that. Yeah, they just need him away from the rest of the X-Teams, so that all the other writers can write their stories without needing to think up a reason for Elixir to not heal everyone.

Although I did like his use in Astonishing X-Men. I think Joss had a good handle on him.

The issue is narrated by the jerk soon to be known as Elixir, Joshua Foley. He's writing to his parents about his experiences and his new friends at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

David is pretty resistant to ever being friends with his roomate, but Sofia and especially Laurie want to give him a chance. Laurie also shows him some leg. No, just kidding, but she does start showing signs she's into him.

In his letter, Josh talks about his teaching lessons with Warren Worthington (THE THIRD!). He talks about Sofia, Laurie, and David and ignores the fact that they don't like his ass by writing, "I guess I get along with them fine." Instead he says he's got a new group of friends, the soon-to-be Hellions squad (plus Anole, minus Tag and Dust).

They're some swell kids.

Meanwhile, David and Danielle sit and talk over coffee at the local shop, The Grind Stone. He's complaining about rooming with Josh, but Danielle is depending on him to get over his past struggles. When Dani goes to pick up her Oreo Crunch ided latte, she has an interesting encounter with the server.

Back at the Institute, Anole runs into Karma and wants to change his advisor from Mr. Logan to Karma, because he's not all that compatible with the Big Hairy One. Karma then goes to visit the still comatose Magma.

Later that day, Josh finds out about Magma and he and Julian decide to finish the job and heal the bitch. They sneak past Nurse Annie because frankly, she's an idiot. Josh tries to jumpstart her brain and well...he sucks. Magma awakes, but she destroys the infirmary and flees. Julian is really hurt, but Josh heals him and they try to escape until they notice Nurse Annie underneath some rubble. Julian just wants to run away, but Josh refuses. Josh mentions they could be "heroes" and Julian's face lights up.

After the paramedics arrive, David lectures Josh...again. He's really annoying like that.

Professor X has a student body meeting to tell everoyne what happened and to warn them not to put the entire school as risk like that again. During his speech, he telepathically orders Julian and Josh to meet him in his office.

The Professor tells the kids that Amara is blocking off any telepathic contact and doesn't want to be found from wherever she has headed. The mental damage she endured was possibly permanent. Danielle is pissed. That girl was family and those two little heathens effed up.

Continued in his letter, Josh writes, "...so basically things here could'be better."

"I know you said you didn't want anything to do with me after my power developed. But I was kinda hoping you would want to know how I was doing." He concludes his letter and sends it off.

2 Weeks later, Josh notices his parents from his window. Josh wants Sofia's help to eavesdrop on Dani and his parents conversation.

"Are you certain this is what you want?"
"Yes. We're certain."

He is freaking ecstatic that he might get to go home and runs to his parents.

Mrs. Foley: "We did."
Josh: "Great. So I can start packing now?"
Mr. Foley: "Whatever for, Joshua?"

He finds out that the parents were overturning custody to the school. Danielle tries to comfort him by saying they're his family now, but he just tells them to "drop dead".

Review

I didn't enjoy this issue. Josh, Julian, and David were the main stars and between the three it was far too much angst, whining, and jerk-a-tude that I really couldn't stand all three of them. Joshua's letter throughout the issue was a nice touch, and I do feel really bad for him, but the characters were just not particularly enjoyable at this point. Julian of course develops as a jerk, but he really lacked any of the charm he has in Academy X.

New artist Carlo Barberi debuts this issue and he's a much more interesting artist than Grant had been and is much cleaner than Robinson from the last arc. However, I think complaints about early Paco Medina art might apply here and stylistically, it might not be for everyone. Its not perfect, but its a step up IMO.

I know N&C said online that Beast's squad was the Exemplars, and Iceman's squad was Excelsior. Or maybe it was the other way around. But I think Beast's was Exemplars. And we know Kitty had a squad because Wing was on hers. Somehow, I doubt Wolverine had time for squad. Then again, Victor originally picked him.

Now that I think of it, I think Beast would be interesting.

I use Adobe Illustrator. I basically just freehand everything and go with the flow.
