I've finally decided to give everyone a peak at some of my artwork. I broke into the comics field in 1989 and starting working on a creator owned project with write Tom Sniegoski for Caliber Press. After a few mini-series I inked a couple DeadWorlds and worked on some Anthology titles. Afterwards Tom and I worked for Dark Moon comics, that died a slow death, and then brought our Shar-Pei character to Crusade Comics. After great reviews, Tom continued writing and I went into advertising. During this time, I did some small projects and one of them is ODEN. I've drawn an entire issue, and have gone back and re-lettered it and colored it for the first time. Here are the first three pages. I hope you all like them and I will continue posting pages as I finish them. All opinions and comments will be welcomed.

So, how was THE FLOCK? Did you finish reading it?

The Flock was great. Very visual as you read it. I've started doing some sketches based on fossil remains and what other artists have speculated that the terror birds might have looked like.

I've finished reading The Flock by James Robert Smith and I've done a few pieces of art based on the book. Head on over and let me know how you like them!

Awesome terror birds. I like your Gamera too.

After seeing your artwork I called the library and put the book on hold. I'll be picking it up after work

Those terror birds are fantastic. Do you spend a lot of time drawing dinosaurs?

dogboy443

I've always drawn, monsters, super-heroes and dinosaurs. Ankylosaurus being one of my favorites. I co-created a comic that was published by CRusade a few years back. It was called Dogs-O-War and it met with great response. We introduced a semi-intelligent T-Rex named King who had robotic arms grafter to his spinal chord so he actually had useful limbs.

Here's KING!!! (http://www.masztal.com/dogs-o-war_3.jpg)

That's my ultimate Smackdown...HellBoy vs Etrigan the Demon with the whole cast of characters, Abe, Liz, And Randhu.
But let me be specific, it's not the latest Demon, but the Moore/Bissette/Totleben Demon.
You got to know the ryhming will drive HB nutty.

Loving your stuff. All of it. I'm jealous of how your inking is so 'finished up' feeling, (don't know how to say it better...).

I Like how LoJo with the gun seems to go:

Finally finished up my Etrigan piece and I'm moving onto a new THINGS piece featuring Swamp Thing, Man Thing and The Heap. I've got partial pencils posted in 2 stages and I'll be posting the finished pencils tomorrow. I've also started coloring the Lobster Johnson pice you'll find on the site, but I pushed it off once I got a THINGS sketch I liked.
The inks on this piece are going to be murder!

Man they both look really good. I think the dogs stand out more on the green cover...
The green looks spookier I think, and the red is scarier.

I remember the death of Dark Moon as being pretty quick. Have you ever heard from or run into Gary or Andy since then?

Mister Him,

I ran into Gary one afternoon in some Mall in CT. We saw each other and I walked right by him. Didn't give the time of day nor the chance to BS me. They treated us like idiots and kept us in the dark (no pun intended). We worked very hard for them, meeting every 2 weeks for a staff meeting, turning in artwork, looking at colored proofs, receiving payment for art and hanging out with each other. When Gary and Andy weren't at a meeting, then we knew we weren't getting paid for artwork we turned in. Zoe (editor-in-chief) would receive the art and then we would have a small meeting and go home disgruntled. After months of no checks I finally called Zoe and told him I wasn't turning in any art unless there was a check waiting for me. When he told me there was no money, I quit. I then proceeded to get the word out to all of the other artists and writers involved. After that, I was done. They owed me over $4,000.00 and some of my nicest work disappeared, never to be seen again and probably in someone's collection or thrown out. After Dark Moon and then after the Crusade debacle, people ask me why I left comics. I tell them my brief story and finish it by saying, I don't work for free. I don't screw people over and I don't deserve, nor will I take, a screwing.

After the DM doors closed I had a conversation with Gary. He assured me they would be opening new offices in W. Hartford and I told him I wanted no part of it. They owed me over $2,000 and I lost a lot of art. (Fortunately I had managed to save a lot.) I do wonder where all that art is today. Steven Kendrick told me he had gone by and looked in the windows and saw papers all over the floor. It could have been art. For all the lies they told, at the very least they could have been responsible enough to return our art.

Months later I saw Gary at Stop & Shop one night. We acknowledged each other as we passed, but I didn't stop. We ended up in the same check-out line and he was a couple of people ahead of me. We weren't that far apart and he knew I was there, but he wouldn't look at me.

So...who is Mister Him? Were you doing anything with DM when I was there? I remember Steve K and an artist named Jonathan who was young talent needing a break and his book had a great look. I did color guides for his book and if the digital color people in Springfield didn't completely over render it, then it would have looked amazing. Tom Sniegoski was working with a young artist named Caesar on a team book and it looked great. I often look at some of the art that I do have of The Thespian and it was a lot of fun to draw. A mix between super-hero and the fantasy of Sandman with hopefully a little horror further down the road.

Silent Scream is getting closer to completion and then the next step will be to present it to a few publishers. Dennis Webster is writing the book, I'm pencilling it, Bill Anderson is co-plotting, inking and lettering the book and Craig Rippon is coloring it. Check us out at the link and let me know what you think.
