WARNING: This contains lots of SPOILERS!
I think the casting for the show is awesome. Everyone is *perfect* for their part, from Angela to Maya, Sylar to Hiro.
I'd have to say my favorites are:
Mohinder
Hiro
Noah
(and a nod to Sylar as being very realistic as a serial killer, and Bob as a "Company Man")
Noah: The Spy with a Family
Noah Bennett is an interesting character. He's tough, a cold-blooded killer... but first and foremost he's a family man. His prinicples are questionable, other than the loyalty he has to his family. He's fascinating.
Also, he had one of my FAVORITE scenes:
He's working at "Copy World." His boss is obviously younger, and is a real prick on a power trip, taking all of his own shortcomings and frustrations on Noah. That moment in the break room, when Noah has had enough, grabs the guy by the finger, and puts him on the table---impressing jerk boss with just how dangerous he is---make me want to stand up and cheer. In a movie theatre, it would bring the entire audience to their feet. EVERYONE has had a boss like that; seeing Noah in that moment, with what he did, was every person's dream. :D
Hiro: The Adorable Boyish Geek
Geeky, nerdy, filled with honor and kindness---Hiro is utterly adorable. And he showed how even the kindest of people can, in their darker side, act out some of the nastiest ideas known to man: like, when he finally catches Adam... and puts him, alive, in a coffin buried in the ground. Beautiful.
People often erroneously assume that nice people are pansies at being mean... but often, it's more that the nice person has *chosen* to be nice, and good---and it's often true that those who feel so much passion about being good, who are so committed to reaching for that "higher plane" of behavior... are capable of an equal depth of cruelty, even if it's simply cruel justice. Hiro could have simply beheaded Adam and been done with it. Instead, he buried Adam alive, giving the rotten cobber ample time to think over his own misdeeds and god complex. (However, I think Hero erred---because the writers are sure to have someone dig Adam up. If it were me, I would've beheaded him, cremated the body, and been SURE he wouldn't come back to harm anyone; then again, I'm practical that way, at least in "fantasy" worlds.)
Anyway, Adam stuff aside, Hiro is utterly adorable. He starts out as an innocent, does a lot of growing, and you end up mostly proud at how he chooses to grow. And he still has a boyish air to him at times, even now.
Mohinder: The Adult Moral Compass
My very favorite character (and yes, I think he's a very hot guy).
What I truly love about his character is that Mohinder represents the dilemma we all face: how to *be* good.
Being able to tell right from wrong is fairly easy, in concept. However, in real life, often we are faced with grey situations. Mohinder is a caring, nurturing person who reveres life. He *is* good, and wants to *do* good. But, he is surrounded by unknowns. He has to determine who is the best person to trust. He revises that daily, as he sees that those who he trusted don’t deserve it, or that they themselves were ignorant of something, that made walking that path with them a negative thing to do. Sometimes, there *is* no right thing for him to do, other than just doing the best he can determine at the moment.
Mohinder represents the best in us all… but also, the difficulty normal people face in complicated situations, in trying to determine just what *is* the right thing to do.
He also shows how normal people have to live with their mistakes (even honest mistakes), to deal with the guilt they engender, and not let it parylize future choices and actions. Peter is the other character with truly high morals, but Peter is naive, lacks confidence, and tends to see things in too much black and white.
In contrast, Mohinder is very confident in, and comfortable with, who and what he is—his dilemma isn’t in having the courage to do the right thing, it’s in figuring out what the right thing is, as best he can, while knowing that his knowledge is imperfect and that in placing trust with others, he’s risking harm to others as well as his own morals. He’s the much more mature character (than Peter).
As to the second question in the thread title... given that I identify most with Mohinder, I'd have to say that if I was one of the current characters, that's who I'd be.
So... what are YOUR answers?

Sylar.
Why? He gets to wreck shit with mind powers.

Actually, my favorite character is probably Matt Parkman.
He wants DESPERATELY to be a hero, and tries so hard to be one of the good guys, but his moral compass isn't quite up to the job. He often tries to take a short cut or the easy out, which then trips him up.
Most people watching Heroes, I think, have often thought that it would be cool to have powers of some sort and - presumably - imagine that they would be good guys, or at least more good than bad. I see Parkman as the Everyman who gives the writers the platform to remind us of the simple, every-day hazards of power without wisdom, and of how those hazards can, in their own way, be more dangerous than a "super-villain".

The second and third times I took it, I altered a couple of answers and got Hiro, then Peter. Basically, it just shifted me around in the top three from the first test. And yes, Sylar was at the bottom on all three.
Bummer that Mohinder isn't on there... :(

Given that Peter can have anyone's power so long as he's gotten close to them, I'd have to agree with you. :D Peter's is the most awesome (and who *wouldn't* want his power?).
Which brings up a scary thought: what if Sylar managed to kill Peter and take HIS power?
*shivers*
They did a really good job of Sylar being the serial killer: he has his own quirky little motivation, etc.

Elle was awesome(mostly cause Bell rocks)
Peter and Nathan are awesome
and I trying to remember the name of Ali Later's character(Nikki?)
those IMHO are the only reason I watch the show as otherwise I not really that into it.

Hiro's been my favorite from the beginning. As a longtime comic book nerd, I could easily identify with him.
But once they introduced hardcore future Hiro, I was really hooked. Masi Oka does a great job of shifting personalities from lovable geek to serious badass.
Favorite line (after Ando suggests present-day Hiro go over and talk to his future self), "No! I scare me!"
Incidentally, I just finished reading a novel, Saving Charlie, by Aury Wallington. It fills in the six-month gap in which Hiro goes back in time to save the waitress murdered by Sylar.
Second favorite character, by the way, is Sylar. Not sure what that says about MY personality.

Sylar doesn't see himself as a serial killer. He sees himself as a natural predator. He's an interesting character. Almost completely id. He wants what he wants and rationalizes it as it's just part of his nature.
That and he flips trucks with his mind.

Having only seen season 1, my favorite characters are Ando, followed by Matt Parkman, then Claude. I could have done without Sylar in the show at all, but I guess that's a minority opinion. As for powers, I kind of like flight and invisibility, especially the way they portray them on the show. Just seem like cool powers to have.

Well, you have to have bad guys for the good guys to fight. ;)
And, if you're gonna do the show with a real world feel... it makes sense that, of everyone who inherits the genetics for powers, at least *some* of them are going be less than stellar people... and a few are going to be genuinely bad people.
In a way, it's a bit of creative writing on their part: they could have done actual ratios of good to bad people, and had a handful of bad guys; instead, they went with one really bad guy being able to acquire anyone else's power. That also works because it makes him a danger to *all* the good guys. And, it also gives him that "hook" as a serial killer: in his own mind, he's justified in committing murder to gain a new power.
Yes, there are other bad guys (Bob, Adam, Linderman)... but still, by creating Sylar as a really really nasty guy with the power he has, they were able to avoid having, say, 14 heroes and 9 bad guys---which would get really unwieldy for writing, filming, etc.
I also like how they handle having so many "good guys": they usually have three separate stories running in an episode, and each one features 1-3 of the good guys; no more than that. I'm sure that makes the filming easier... but it also makes the watching easier on us fans. And the flashback part helps bring you up to speed on where that week's episode is going from that point onward.
They spend at least half again shooting time as an average show, and their cast numbers a LOT more "stars" than most shows. The way they manage the production aspect is amazing.

HRG/Noah Bennet is my favorite. Because he's smarter than everyone else, usually. :) I really like the complex relationship between Noah and Claire, though I think they made a mistake by going backwards with it at the beginning of this season. It should have shown some progression.
As for powers, well, Claire! Nothing can kill you--well, almost nothing. Always liked the idea of immortality. Not flashy but it works. Though, Peter's got that power and then some, so there's a thought. I don't like the character of Peter but I think he's well-developed as someone who just doesn't understand how to use all these powers, though he tries hard. So, clearly, Peter's got the best bunch of powers, even better than Sylar because he doesn't have to kill people to get them.

My favorite is Man #2 from Season one Episode 4.
That guy was badass! I hope he returns in Volume 3.
My favorite is Hiro, for obvious reasons.
I'd want to be either: Claire, and never be hurt or sick again; or Au Co (from the comic book), the Vietnamese girl who could control plants.

I like Matt Parkman a lot.
But the best characters are Peter and Niki/Jessica, although I didn't like how they took out Jessica for season 2 and just had her be an alternate personality.
Peter is wonderful since he tries very hard to do the right thing and fails so very often. He's confused most of the time. He has too much power and not enough of a grasp on how to use it. Just an all around wonderful character.
Niki/Jessica was wonderful for the positively glorious acting Ali Larter did in the role. You could even tell when Jessica was pretending to be Niki. And I liked that Jessica was not some horrible evil character. She took care of Niki when Niki couldn't take care of herself, and ultimately felt rejected when Niki chose D.L. over her.

Yeah, I understand that, and I definitely understand the necessity of the villain being more powerful than the hero, which a character with powers like Sylar accomplishes very well. And like you say, it makes managing the show and cast a little bit easier.
My problem with Sylar is that I don't particularly care for his character to begin with. Then they killed off a bunch of minor characters, who I thought had a lot of potential, in order to build him into their all-powerful super-serial killer. Very annoying. On the other hand, though, they have successfully created a bad guy that I hate and loathe, and want the heroes to kill. :evilsmile

Sylar's real name is Gabriel Gray. He was "Case Zero" for Dr. Chandra Suresh: basically, he was the first person Dr. Suresh Sr. found who had powers (who proved his theories). Gabriel was a watch repair person. Very repressed guy, forced into the profession by his watchmaker father. He always wanted to be special, and felt utterly non-special.
I have no idea what the complicated formula was that Chandra used to find "specials." Anyway, he found Gabriel, told him of his theories, etc. and took Gabriel to his apartment for testing. Big clue which Chandra missed: when he walked in, Gabriel immediately knew Chandra's watch was 2 seconds off. His power is to know how things work. Anyway, Chandra didn't find anything with his testing, and told Gabriel "Sorry, guess you don't have powers after all." Gabriel was NOT happy about this. He noticed a sticky note Chandra had with this other guy's name on it, and palmed it. Tracked the guy down, called him up and invited him to the watch shop. Once the guy was there, he was telling Gabriel that he hadn't figured out how to use his power much yet---then demonstrated his telekinesis by moving a cup. (BTW, he asks Gabriel's name; Gabriel looks down at a watch he's repairing---the brand name on the face says "Sylar"---so that's what he says). Gabriel looks at his forehead and says, "Yes, you don't know how to work it," and when the guy turns his back, Gabriel bashes him with a crystal cluster.
Next thing, Gabriel shows up to Chandra's apartment and demonstrates telekinesis. Chandra is astonished; Gabriel is "very helpful," etc. After a while, Chandra starts getting leary of Gabriel... but too late to prevent the subsequent murders; and finally, Gabriel murders Suresh Sr. in his cab (he was working as a cabby to make money).
Sylar's mother always wanted him to be special; father made him be forgettable. Big conflict. Sylar was likely already close to psychopathic; I think that pushed him over the edge... but it never came out until he realized that he *could* possess special powers... so long as he was willing to murder to get them. He's a coldhearted bastard. And yeah, I can't stand him either, and will be glad when they finally off him for good.

Isaac wasn't just the one who paints the future (really cool effect: his eyes go cataract blind when he's in seer mode)---he is also the one who created the 9th Wonders comic book... which unknown to him, ALSO tells the future. When Hiro first teleports to NYC, he finds a 9th Wonders comic on the stand---and he himself is on the cover with his arms raised in victory, just as he had been not five minutes before.
Peter and Sylar both now have Isaac's power: Peter got it after meeting him, Sylar got it when he murdered Isaac.
