I like installing all kinds of facebook apps although I'm probably behind the curve. (I do have a flash layout for my myspace though.)

Anyway, the last one I installed was Chainn by Spark, the dating website.

They have a rapid "would you date person X" thing.

YES 1 vote 6%
NO 14 votes 93%
Total 15 votes

You are more desirable
than 58.22% of people
Another 19,774 people is at your level
Your global desirability ranking is 6,895 out of 15,994,865 people

I felt a bit put down by the results. But then I noticed that I beat 58% of people with that score and that I'm around 7,000 out of 15 million.

With numbers like those, I'm gonna assume that the "most desirable" people are like one in a million and that most people are even pickier than me. Wow!

Also:

I'm a fan of Project Playlist and the wall graphitti add-on.

I just went on a mass purging of my apps.

All that's left is funwall, some shows I like and Jack Handy. Vampires will probably be on the chopping block soon enough too.

pro poke is better, you invent your own pokes....I threw an old, incontinent blind mutt at a dog lover friend of mine.

He claims he's still working on a proper retort.

Pro Poke? I have to investigate this.

I am addicted to Pet Dragons, because it's all of two minutes out of my day.

And Mindjolt Games, because I get ridiculously bored very quickly. Pretty flashing colours!

Are there any apps at Facebook that are actually useful?

I mean, there's only so many quizzes one can take, and only so many variations on pretending to be a zombie or other such creature. As far as I can see, everything on Facebook is intended to facilitate a simulation of a personal relationship, rather than actually relating to anyone. It seems awfully contrived, facile, superficial and pointless.

I used Facebook more than I ever did MySpace, mostly because (a) it's a lot less ugly and (b) it doesn't inflict those annoying dating service ads on me, but it's losing its charm real fast. I don't need to "poke" people or pretend to send them gifts; if I want to stay in touch with them I'll send an actual message, not one that somebody else thought up for me as a faux-friendship component.

Maybe it's me. Maybe I'm old and cranky. Could be.

By the way, if you're on my friends list, please don't send me anything that requires me to annoy other people before I can use it. If an app or quiz or game requires me to send it to 10 or 20 people (or even one) before I can see my results or use the app, it gets deleted and a nasty note gets posted on the app author's comment board. I hate that sort of thing. I'm about to start deleting friends who send that shit.

Well there's this Green Patch one where if you pester enough of your friends with it you supposedly save a square foot or so of rainforest.

But otherwise...no...except for the ones that allow me to narcissitcally rant on about my personal interests.

Well I pretty much share your views and I'm 26, which I guess passes for "old and cranky" in our youth obsessed culture.

(Even though we regularly have thirty-year olds playing twenty-somethings on television.)

The app things have started popping up on Bebo as well. I don't have a clue what they're meant to do, so I've left well alone so far. The one Patrick's talking about sounds like a Hot or Not? thing which actively hunts you down; why would anyone want that?

Sometimes the Facebook apps get a little out of hand. When I first had facebook, the only real app there was, was the video application and I remember that being a big deal. We have matured so much with these "WHAT KIND OF DRUG ARE YOU?" or "WHAT SEX POSITION WOULD YOU DO?" I recently figured out how to block certain ones. But I did finally cave and accept one which is the "Grey's Anatomy Fans" one. Are there any good ones out there that I should invest in trying out?
