Inspired by Brian Cronin being unimpressed by the latest Dylan compilation.
Are you happy with the greatest hits albums that have been put forward as representations of your favourite artists work?
Could you devise a better one?
Try and design it with a complete newcomer in mind,so it's probably better to keep it to a collection that could fit on a single disk(two if you really need it).
Go nuts.

Yes, i've missed out the live album, tracks, a couple of album title tracks and some of the newer stuff, but this should fit on a CD and covers a lot of ground.

Springsteen's hard for me, because the hits aren't usually my favourite songs. I'll rework The Essential instead:
disc 1
Growin' Up
Lost In The Flood
Incident On 57th Street
Rosalita
Thunder Road
Born To Run
Jungleland
Badlands
Racing In The Street
The Promised Land
The River
Nebraska
Reason To Believe*
disc 2
Born In The USA
No Surrender
Spare Parts
Lucky Town**
The Ghost Of Tom Joad
Youngstown (live version from Live In New York City)
The Rising
You're Missing
My City Of Ruins
The Promise (full band version)***
If I Was The Priest***
something from the 'Electric Nebraska' sessions***
* writing this one stopped him from killing himself. If that ain't essential, I don't know what is!
** If we must have something from The Era That Should Remain Forgotten...
*** obligatory unreleased material so the hardcore fans will have to buy it

I'll probably suck at this, but I'll give it a shot for the Smiths.
1. The Queen is Dead
2. Panic
3. This Charming Man
4. Girlfriend in a Coma
5. The Boy With the Thorn in His Side
6. That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore
7. Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want
8. How Soon is Now?
9. Bigmouth Strikes Again
10. Ask
11. Hand in Glove
12. Cemetry Gates
13. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
14. Shoplifters of the World Unite
15. I Know It's Over
16. There is a Light that Will Never Go Out

I suppose I should do an R.E.M. compilation of actual hits, since that's what's being asked. Though like Spike-X there, a lot of my favorite songs by them aren't considered hits.
So this is a "Hits Only" List.
1. Radio Free Europe
2. Gardening at Night
3. So. Central Rain
4. Driver 8
5. Fall on Me
6. The One I Love
7. It's the End of the World As We Know It
8. Orange Crush
9. Stand
10. Pop Song '89
11. Losing My Religion
12. Shiny Happy People
13. Drive
14. Everybody Hurts
15. Man on the Moon
16. What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
17. Bang and Blame
18. Star 69
19. Strange Currencies
20. E-Bow the Letter
21. Bittersweet Me
22. Daysleeper
23. Imitation of Life
24. Leaving New York

Doesn't have to be the hits though. From what I understood from the original post, this is basically making the best comp to serve both as an introduction and a collection of the band's best stuff.

Inspired by Brian Cronin being unimpressed by the latest Dylan compilation.
Was it on this forum? Or the Comm board? I was considering getting the box set (I'm unlikely to buy all Dylan's albums so I thought a compilation would be a nice compromise) but was holding off because it was really kind of pricey.
Cronin, where are you?

I actually think the best thing to do would be to buy Dylan's more essential albums and a decent greatest hits with it. I think the boxset is too pricey and too comprehensive for this purpose. I recommend getting the Essential Bob Dylan instead to get a nice overview of Dylan's career and then beefing it up with his best albums.

I was thinking of putting on my favourite songs, but decided that it would be better to wander about a bit, was going to do a 2nd disc of things, that poeple wouldn't really know stuff like
This Hard Land
Frankie
Zero and Blind Terry

Oh, okay. Then I'll do an "Essential" R.E.M. list when I get home tonight.

Frankie is a great song. It's a shame it never 'fit' on any of Brice's albums.
This Hard Land's another good one. If Born In The USA had been put together by the Bruce Springsteen who wrote Nebraska rather than the Bruce Springsteen who wrote Hungry Heart, it would have been a far superior album.

The box has the advantage of having material from his two 2000s albums, although I guess the Essential is pretty good on its own (and I can get it for half price).
Okay, no more derailing of this thread.

I guess System of a Down. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd chose them.
So here goes:
1. Sugar
2. Spiders
3. Chop Suey!
4. Shimmy
5. Aerials
6. F**k the System
7. Chic N Stu
8. Radio/Video
9. This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song
10. Attack
11. Soldier Side
12. Vicinity of Obscenity
I tried to stay away from big hits like BYOB and Hypnotize, but I wanted to put Chop Suey and Aerials in, since I feel that they are deeper songs, with more effort and emotion put into the making.
