That's literally all I have so far John. I only got a start on the costume a few days ago, and the tail alone is taking longer than I thought it would. I'm hoping to get the tail, mask and gloves done so I can wear it with a t-shirt and jeans, but even that might not be possible to get done in time for the college's Halloween Bash on the 27th.

looks really cool Laura! perhaps it took a long time because you cut all those yourself by hand. perhaps you can bribe animation students to sit and cut cans for you!

looking forward to seeing more of it!

Cutting and preparing the cans doesn't take up that much time, as I've got about seventy of them that I had already cut the tops and bottoms off of over the summer. Cutting them into smaller bits isn't really that time consuming - it's the sewing. I've sewn about 400 bits of metal to that tail as of my writing this.

However, I have figured out a way to cheat a bit so if I run out of time I can still put together a decent partial. I'm putting a fabric wrap on the base of the tail (kind of like what they sometimes do with show horses) and upper arms to cover up where I won't have time to sew the bits of metal.

It looks VERY kool so far!

I've started on the understructure for the mask. I'll take some photos as I work tomorrow and post 'em when I need a break from working. I've never done a beaked critter before, so it's proving to be a bit of a challange to get the mask base to look right.

will the beak be moveable? will the beak be a different material?

did you post design sketches of this critter yet?

Ose
10-24-2005, 10:39 AM
The beak will be moveable. I'm trying a different setup to accomplish that, and it looks like it'll work far better than what I used to do with plastic canvas-based masks. The beak's covered in gold-coloured cloth to help break up all the silver on the rest of the body.

And I'm afraid there aren't any critter design sketches - I'm doing this one entirely on the fly because I'm running out of time. Thursday's the campus Halloween Bash, and I want to be there.

How the mask looks currently (http://www.dragonfyredawn.com/costuming/gryphonmaskwip.jpg)

I'm getting there...slowly, but I'm getting there. I'm going to see if I can get most of the mask done tomorrow. I'd do more tonight, but my hands need a break.

But it looks pretty cool so far!

does the rest of the head get covered in something? more metal? fur?

what is the eye made of? where do you see out of?

Ose
10-25-2005, 11:12 AM
The rest of off-white fabric you see there is going to be covered with metal. I'm going to try to finish up the longer "hairs" today so I can move on to the shorter ones around the eyes.

The eyes are plastic half-globes (you see 'em around this time of year - they're usually used to make Christmas ornaments) with a backing of kid's fun foam painted the appropriate colours. The pupil is two layers of chiffon. I can see out the eyes a bit, but more vision will be out the front through tear ducts attached to the eyes (also to be covered with chiffon).

I finished the costume not twenty minutes ago, and I'm out the door for the college Halloween Bash here in about ten minutes. The gloves are about the crappiest thing I've ever made, but they'll do for tonight. Hopefully I'll have pictures to show off tomorrow.

As promised, pictures! Sorry they aren't all that great. The lighting wasn't very good and then it started raining, so we didn't get many good pictures.

I finally got around to getting this one web-ready. My take on the Jersey Devil of the Pine Barrens...and that's all I'll say because I'm tempting fate by leaving my computer on while there's a lovely lightning storm outside.

Great drawing, Ose!. I like the composition with it swooping into the frame. It's nice that it has wings for arms rather than wings and arms. I just did a little Googleing on the Jersey Devil - I hadn't heard of it before. Cool lengend, cool creature and cool drawing.

It was going to have the stubby arms that the Jersey Devil is often described as having, but after much frustration from trying to get them to look right, I decided they weren't all that asthetically pleasing anyway. This way, the drawing at least makes the critter's anatomy at least somewhat plausible.

I'm trying to get some small commissions lined up to make a few extra bucks. No takers yet, but I decided to give convention badges a try again. The furry fandom crowd likes 'em and they don't take a whole lot of time to do. But first I needed to whip up a couple samples...

More animal people stuff. I really need to do more detailed art again. Not that these look bad, but I feel like what skill I do have is at least partially going to waste.

I got bored, so I decided to add some colour to one of my t-shirt designs. The others will probably follow, when I have the time. My animated short is sucking up all my time right now...

I've been trying to do a rendition of the Jersey Devil for quite a while now and keep trashing designs. Can't get a hold on 'im. Yours is great.

No new "art", but a sewing project. I have way too much fake fur sitting around, so I designed a critter backpack meant for holding a sketchbook and art supplies. He's not quite done here - he's missing his claws. His back paws hook up to his front paws to create the shoulder straps. With a bit of luck, I might be able to get a few commissions for these.

Glad you like the bag zefo. And thank you for the compliment Lilitu. I still have a ways to go before I'm a good animator though ;)

And just a general annoucement - I now have an online store set up, shopping cart and everything. There were a couple of you who has asked about my sketchbooks and comic back in October but I never heard anything else from you. Now you won't have to talk to me to get 'em ;) The store's only set up for check/money order and Paypal. I did some testing myself and to my knowlege everything's working right. The weights are weird because Canada Post's default values screw things up, but I've got it tweaked so that the shipping costs are about right even if the weights are far more than they should be.

My store is here (http://www.dragonfyredawn.com/catalog/)

Still a bit early, but I couldn't resist getting in on Cafepress's anti-Valentine's contest. I don't like or hate Valentine's day, but any excuse to draw a peeved looking cat is a good one ;) The shirts have a slogan to go with the image, but I left it out here.

I'm not dead!

Just thought I'd let you nice folks know I'm still around, but I've been hellishly busy with my student film. Once it's finished and my wrist gets a sorely needed break, I plan on getting some art done that isn't cutesy. It's been too long since I've done anything detailed or creepy, so I'll have to fix that.

I'm gearing up for a convention too. I can't make it to MCCC in May, but I'm going to a smaller, more artist-centric convention in Ottawa called C-ACE. If all goes well I'll have a new costume to strut around in at it too.

kool ose, keep us posted!

Ose

The 2D film is now finished. There's plenty I don't like about it, but since I'm back next year to do my 3rd year 3D stuff, I'll be able to fix what I don't like. I had a lot of outside stress factors this semester that took a toll on my productivity, so some of the animation could be far better. But ah well. The current version isn't too bad despite the improvements that could be made.

I don't have it up online yet - I'm going to have to do some playing around to see how small I can shrink it down to so it's a manageable size and still looks decent, and even then I might be sending links to interested folks via PM so my host doesn't get mad for my using too much bandwidth.

I seriously doubt this will apply to anyone, but if anybody happens to be in the Windsor area on May 11th and would like to see an hour or two worth of student films, let me know. The showing's free, but you need one of our tickets to get into the theatre. I can snag as many as needed.

And now that all this is over with, I should be back to browsing the board on a regular basis. I missed you guys!

I've played around with the master file and re-rendered it at a more manageable size. It's about 55 megs. So if anybody wants to see the film, let me know and I'll message you the URL. I'd post the link publicly, but I don't want my host getting upset about the jump in bandwidth use.

I'm back from C-ACE, and I (along with Uniform Grey and her fiance) had a blast. It's a great little convention, and finances allowing, I'll be going back next year.

And since I'm done with the working on big things for a little while, I should be able to go back to doing art that I can post here for everybody to see. It'll be nice to be able to do things that aren't related to school or conventions for a little while.

My motivation's gone out the window, but this week I managed to get the first bit for my next costume done.

Simple bodice (http://www.dragonfyredawn.com/costuming/faun/faunbodice.jpg)

Nothing really original here. I just modified a McCalls pattern a bit. The really fun part is the part I need to tackle next: hoof boots!

I'm afraid I haven't been doing much drawing the last few months. Screwy work hours killed my will power to do much of anything on my time off. I have some in-progess pieces, a few finished ones that aren't much to the taste of folks here (so I'm not bothering to link), but I figured I'd post this one because it's my first experiment with my mis-matched collection of bargain shelf prisma markers. Quicky ink sketch with marker overlay (though I did a second set of inks because I liked how the inks looked alone).

Inks only version (http://www.dragonfyredawn.com/sketchbook/sb0906_1.jpg)
Coloured version (http://www.silverfang.dragoncity.net/images/weretigermarker.jpg)

If all goes well I'll have some new costuming stuff to show soon (hoof boots!). And if my film idea gets approved, I'll have some nice werewolfy looking monster stuff to post as I get the preliminary work for the character done.

sounds like you are jumping back into the school schedule.

Halloween is only 41 days away!!!!!

Ose

Jumping back into the school schedule, already hitting conflicts with the teacher, unfortunately. I'm going to be a ball of stress, but I've managed to convince him I'm willing to put in the hard work and hours my film concept requires. I'd rather work like mad to do something I can actually be proud of than do something "simple" and know I could do better.

So expect some WIP's of the character as I get it designed, modelled and rigged. Werewolfish critter, anyone? ;)
