I took a long vacation from comics, 1988-2000, so I have a gap in my Marvel "memory" if you will. Since Annihilation I've been going back and collecting the various "Infinity" series, the various "Warlock" books, and picking up stuff like "Galactic Storm" when it hits the trades.
I've just read Galactic Storm. First thought: WOW, did crossovers REALLY cross over back there! From Iron Man to Cap to Quasar to WonderMan to Thor to Avengers... did collecting this series drive anyone nuts back in the day? Must have been crossovers like this that led to Joe Q's initial ban on crossovers.
Second Thought: Whatever happened to the Shi'ar's takeover of the Kree Empire? Did Giffen just blow all that off to start up Annihilation, or is there some explanation for how the Kree got their Empire back?
Third thought: Don't be in such a hurry to have the cosmic intermingle with the Earth-based heroes! Galactic Storm is not as strong a story as Annihilation. It's much more basic, far fewer plot elements, and here's the thing that got me... there was a hell of a lot of sniping, bickering and infighting, to a fault!! Maybe it was the nature of things back then in the Marvel Uni, but it made me thankful for the SHRA. At least now the super heroes have something worth arguing over, instead of the whiny posturing that seems to have dominated the Avenger of Galactic Storm.
How was this received when it first came out? I'm curious...

At first, I was thrilled. I had been hoping for a big battle between the Avengers and the Imperial Guard for years.
But the quality of this crossover varied wildly from title to title, in writing and in artwork. Quasar looked especially girly at the time with that long mullet and the artist who made him look so androgynous. And this is the exact storyline where those stupid bomber jackets first appeared. I still can't get over the foolishness of either Cap or Dane wearing leather bomber jackets over chainmail. There was a Wonder Man issue that was incredibly annoying, too. Before Galactic Storm was half over, I was picking and choosing which issues to skip and which to buy.
I didn't mind the in-fighting, because there had been comparable tension amongst Avengers at times in the past, going all the way back to issue #1. The conclusion was kind of shocking, and the epilogue in Cap's own title was well-written, bringing Steve and Tony to an understanding despite their differences.

Galactic Storm was great but I wouldn't call it a true MU-wide crossover. It only crossed over with Avengers titles, but had a Shi'ar presence...but was still primarily an Avengers event. I doubt collecting it drove anyone nuts back then, cause there was a defined reading order, (Cap>AvenWC>Quas>WM>Aven>IM>Thor), plus each issue was numbered, (Galactic Storm Part #).
Second Thought: Whatever happened to the Shi'ar's takeover of the Kree Empire? Did Giffen just blow all that off to start up Annihilation, or is there some explanation for how the Kree got their Empire back?
I think Genis-Vell 'reset' the universe or something...I'm not sure, but that part of continuity was wiped out, and the Kree came back.

I'd beg to differ with you...I thought Galactic Storm was a very strong story. Like Annihilation, it was very self-contained, easy to follow, and had a strong climax. The best part of Galactic Storm is that every character plays a strong part, especially in his own book...which is the advantage of using individual titles to tie the event together rather than its own series, with separate tie-ins.

I thought the Wonder Man issues were the highlight...Cap was good too. Not the best period for Iron Man however. Overall it was pretty solid, especially the last couple of issues.

Well not the second part. Is that where Genis died? Issue #s?

Well not the second part. Is that where Genis died? Issue #s?The first storyline of his final series (v6) was where the universe was destroyed and recreated. I don't recall specifically when we found out that the Kree were back to normal, though.

Operation Galactic Storm was originally supposed to take place only in Quasar. But with it taking place when it did someone made the decision to make it an Avengers crossover in order to rake in the big bucks :)
