They're basically passive aggressive digs: when they're( the first post sets the tone) keen and accurately skewering of the original thread's flaws they're hilarious; when they're not, they tend to the petulant and banal.

Messageboards in general. Wherever you find the dangerous combination of a desire for attention with a drastically underdeveloped sense of comedic timing, you'll find parody threads.

While there have been a couple of parody threads, most of them have been a complete waste of time. Out of respect for the posters I won't mention which threads were gold and which were crap.

It's okay les, I know most of mine were crap. Though I thought our sparring in the things that sex me thread was great. and the things that hex me one turned out some fun responces. I'll admit I go over board but most of the time it's just cause everyones either posting in the brand new spankin thread or the passed out in yabs thread and I don't want to post there. So when I see a new thread that is great to pun on I leap at the chance. I was gonna do a thread titled Does anyone find quail attractive, and have the first sentence be on a bed of rice covered in lemon sauce but I restrained myself.

Naming no names, of course, I have noticed that the success or failure of the parody thread seems to rest pretty heavily with the author of the thread. That, and the successful ones seem to parody only the title of the original thread and then go on to become their own discussions.
Current example: Since I haven't read the threads (except the original) yet, I can use the titles:
The Pure Sex/Sox/Sax threads - three threads, two with parody titles, but all with completely different subject directions they can go in. This, to me, is not a problem - the reader gets a little chuckle at the title, then goes on to a discussion of baseball or jazz music. Those kind of parody threads are quite alright.
Others, though, are just there for the sake of parodying the original thread title. THOSE are getting old.

I don't see how, unless the original thread is something worth scorning with parody. 99% of the time, they're not making fun of another thread, they're making fun out of another thread, and almost always only their title. They're codependent in parody only superficially, and independent in humor.

I don't think they're passive aggressive. Sure, they probably can be. More often than anything, they're just lazy. It's the concept of a joke, but without the follow through. It's very Family Guy in its essence. "Hey, I'm going to show you something. There, isn't that funny?" Well, no it isn't. You didn't make a joke, you just made a thread about potatoes.
AaronJ
01-30-2008, 09:03 AM
It's really only a problem when you end up with threads which parody other parody threads. ;)
There was a string of those on the 'Rama for a while. You'd end up three levels deep, with parody-parody-parody threads. It was totally ludicrous.

Yeah, but it is annoying once so many of them crop up that they fill up the front page. Having to dig through all of them to find a real discussion because people had a "hilarious" idea for a thread title is quite annoying.

Yes, they're very non-sequitur, but if you don't find mindless, indirect humor funny, you don't have to laugh or feel bad for not laughing or feel left out when everyone else does or feel a sense of duty to point out things everyone already knows.

This I agree with. They're funny every once in a while, and they're less annoying and invasive when they're done infrequently, but when somebody parodies at least one thread a day, usually more, and they're almost always trite or barely chuckle-worthy, it gets old. And it cheapens an already cheap joke.

Okay, I've been too clinical in my description. But a lot of parody threads I see are created for the express purpose of mocking the intent or content of the original post in the original thread. So instead of telling you in your thread that I think your thread is full of it or after I get tired of doing it over and over again; or instead of telling you I'm a little annoyed of the many seemingly trivial threads you've started, I start a parody thread. To mock you. I'm not confronting you directly or actively, but tangentially...passively.
Yes, sometimes there's a genuine desire to have a little harmless fun because a thread sparked a humourous association. My assertion is that it's largely not the case.

Well, here at YABS, I can't think of more than a handful of threads I've seen parodying another that seemed like they were done simply to mock someone, and that's not just in my recent memory, but in my total memory of posting here. And I can't recall the last time I've ever even seen one on Comm. Now, over at the Bendis Board, back when I bothered to go there for a while, I saw it all the time. And it happens on plenty of other boards. But here, unless I'm missing something, not as much.
Which isn't to say it doesn't happen, I just don't notice it or it doesn't seem to happen as often as the typically mindless, cheap humor threads... of which I have posted many.

to the point where they have staying power on page 1 then they have proven their value in the marketplace of ideas. If that means some other thread that received less response gets pushed to page 2, too bad. That's how message boards work.
If there is some thread that you absolutely feel MUST be on page 1 there's this thing you can do called BUMP.

If that means some other thread that received less response gets pushed to page 2, too bad. That's how message boards work. As far as their relative worth, sometimes they're fun little in-jokes. Other times they're nasty digs at somebody else without having the sack to actually make the nasty digs. The problem is that sometimes the "staying power" lies in being meanspirited and the mob getting one in before an authority figure steps in.
If there is some thread that you absolutely feel MUST be on page 1 there's this thing you can do called BUMP.
Excessive bumping tends to be frowned upon. That's not how message boards work, at least not the good ones.

If someone doesn't care for it, I'm pretty sure there are other boards where people who don't like it as well would feel more welcome. But the assumption that one board MUST support the general culture of people from other boards would be an incorrect one.
It would be just as pointless to go to Rumbles or the X-Boards (as a couple examples) and suggest they're doing something wrong when people there seem generally happy about it ... otherwise, they'd go elsewhere. Or going to Comm and asking what the point is of having so many Rita's threads. To someone from elsewhere, it could well seem bizarre ... but it works for them. Going to Comm and putting down Rita's may not be the best move. I think the same holds true elsewhere.

If you do not like them,do not read them. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to read the thread. It takes all of two seconds to go "It is another parody thread." and move on to one you wish to read.

They were cute for a minute, but after a bit.... it gets seriously old. Any joke that is repeated again and again and again gets old.... and in effect all the parody threads are the same joke over and over....
It's the YABS equivalent of "Where's the beef?"
And yeah, when you have a thread where you're being very serious, and someone parodies it, it can come off as a passive-aggressive 'fuck you'.

Tell people they can't parody your threads(and yours DO seem to get the treatment)?
Best thing to do is to ignore them if they bother you. The more you empower them to upset you,the more you create your own problem.
Instead,do the best thing you can do: HAVE FUN.
IF,hypothetically, someone IS out to say "F-U" to you in a passive/aggressive manner, the best way to "win" is to ENJOY life, and have a good time. Create more threads! Talk to your friends! Enjoy offline activities. Spray paint rubber halloween bats pink and toss them at family pets! :D

So, just to be clear, the fact that Helix also posts elsewhere means he can't make a critical comment about something here (which I'm pretty sure he made clear upthread isn't a YABS-specific phenomena)? Would you have had the same objection if he'd made a thread to declare his undying love to parody threads?

Well, it's not a YABS-specific phenomena, but he posted it in YABS, while we're going through a parody phase for some unknown reason, so what else can you conclude about the post ...?
Of course he can make a critical comment about something here. And, of course, people can choose to take it how they will, and respond accordingly. And yes, if someone isn't that well known on the board, of course it will affect how the message is taken to a certain extent.
Again, I'm perfectly free to go on the Rumbles board and start a thread about how it sucks because too many of the rumbles involve manga characters and not mainstream Marvel/DC ones. I would also be told, in no uncertain terms a) you're wrong, the culture here more than allows that whatever your personal opinion, and b) who the heck are YOU to tell US what to do? Now, maybe Gladiaria could get away with it there, she's well known on Rumbles ... but I couldn't. I've made so few posts there, my opinion would be meaningless, and possibly even taken as some outsider elitist who wants things run her way when I have in now way earned the right to tell them what to do.
The same thing might occur if I posted a "the X-Franchise is a dying, useless breed" thread on the X-Boards. Although, say, RoguishGurl might be able to get away with it because she's well known in that community. The people she posts with respect her and know her, she's a part of a unique and special group. I'm not a part of it. Now, could I post it? Sure ... but there's no way I would get the same response that she would if she posted that thread, and you know it. The X-Posters are a fairly tight-knit group of friends, much like the YABSers, and most people recognize that. And no, I don't think it's dying ... I love X-Men: First Class ... but, moving on along ...
Or, if I went to Comm and posted a "Geez, how many 'Hypothetical Election' threads do you guys need?'" thread, oh yes ... you can be sure I'd get flamed, and for good reason. Because AGAIN, the culture there allows for it, and I'm not a part of that culture. Again, if Howyadoin posted that thread, there would be a far different reaction than if I did, becauase he's a part of that culture, and I barely visit the place. The few times I DO post there, I try to avoid making posts that could be construed as sweeping negatives about the board, since coming from me, they would be considered unwelcome meddling ... and rightly so. But ... there's nothing stopping me from doing so.
And if he made a thread proclaiming his undying love for parody threads ... I'd probably just post "Well, start making some!"

It had to happen sooner or later. I can make intelligent posts when I actually sleep for eight hours. So, that explains the OTHER ten thousand posts I've made.

But I generally stay out of the political threads, because they're so Americentric, and I'm quite happy to be living in Canada instead.
And of course, because in all the time I've been at CBR, political threads have accomplished exactly nothing.
And if he made a thread proclaiming his undying love for parody threads ... I'd probably just post "Well, start making some!"Eh. I've participated in a few, but it gets old incredibly fast if we're not making fun of iwarrior.

While there have been a couple of parody threads, most of them have been a complete waste of time. Out of respect for the posters I won't mention which threads were gold and which were crap.
Sadly, most of my threads are viewed as bizarre self-parody when I'm serious. And when I'm not.
Fortunately, most people don't read them, so (almost) no one notices.
The others are too kind to say anything.

Then again, I've often felt like complaining that Gail doesn't get some kind of royalties for the Rick Olney thread, which obviously generates at least half of CBR's advertising revenues. =)
Do I have any standing in that thread? No, but then who cares? It's still worth pointing out, regardless of whether I'm serious or not. =)

That's true enough ... and hey, I'm not saying you can't post it, what I *AM* saying is that you should expect some responses, several of which you might not enjoy, from people who have invested a lot of emotions into "their" thread.
Also ... IIRC, Rick did exactly that too ... with the expected result. I could be misremembering that, though.
