View Full Version : Do you think the FOX Cartoon had the best Marraige Retcon?

I went insane when the infamous Clone Saga slowly worked it's way into the final storylines of the FOX Spider-Man cartoon. Having been following it non-stop for years without a conclusion, and the days of it's capable heights replaced by Ben as Spidey and enough contradictions and second-guessing than Lefty Donvon subsituting for Roderic on his driving exam, I didnt want the series being dragged to that level (they already overstretched Peter not getting over MJ's loss in season two), but thankfully "Spider-Wars", was a great finale and a highlight of the series, so it put fears to rest.

The FOX Clone Saga begun with the MJ that resurfaced in season four to be a clone. For all the heat it got back then, I look at it now as a very sound peice of psychological drama. MJ is written rather capable, trying to solve mysteries about her dissaperance by herself with Peter more a helpless string-along whose ultimatley left with nothing by the storyline's conclusion as MJ and Hydro-Man exhausted their powers and died.

I hadnt liked this version of MJ much prior to the storylines leading to the wedding and afterwards, her overly theatrical voice naussiated me. I did like that they had the balls to marry the two off (as a matter of fact "The Wedding" was aired not as the season premiere of the final season in the UK, but the season finale, hell of a lot better than "The Prowler"), but the writers finally woke the character up at this point and "got" her

So...as far as marraige retcons go, was this the best idea? The series ended on an upbeat cliffhanger, but there's countless rumours and even confirmations from the head writer that MJ would have been found in the 1920s, she'd reveal she always knew who Peter was (the clone had to be told, maybe that's why they wanted to "fix" that), and the two would return to the present day still married by law. The series ended it's 65 episode run, so it didnt get renewed.

When you only have five episodes left, that's one narrow jump.

No, that (plus lois and clark) is the reason I hate most clones. And hate clone stories, and partly dread Secret Invasion. It's not a clone story, but it's a "The person who did this and that isn't really the real person" story. Ugh.

Was that frog-eating thing supposed to be some sort of V tribute? If not it was one of the most inane things I have seen given permission to air.

But Mary Jane being Hydro clone girl made it un-watchable. I remember cringing after she "found" her powers.

seriously it like they took the worst lobe script they could find and had 4 kids reworked it.

Sort of. The comic based on the series (as breif as it was) was better written, but you're right, Unlimited was a sequel series of sorts (it was originally going to be Spidey 2099, but they thought people would call it a Batman Beyond rip-off, when BB itself owes a lot to 2099)

I was 11 when it was on TV. I loved it, and missed it a bunch.

I'd buy it on DVD.

It's complicated.

Region 2 has the Iron Man and FF box sets, but no Spidey or X-Men yet.

... I really didn't mind it that much. I thought it actually fit into how the series worked. I wouldn't exactly call it a retcon either, as the writers planned that stuff out in advance.

I have to agree with ZT4 with regards to the wedding episode. That would have been a much better series finale than the parallel universe two-parter. I'd say that the wedding episode could have been easily a two-parter in and of itself instead of the cramming it in all one episode like they did. And bet the part where they revealed that Mary Jane was actually a clone must have made Marvel execs at the time go "Damn! Why didn't WE think of that!" (Oddly enough, there was such a proposal for ending the clone saga in a similar fashion, in that BOTH Ben and Mary Jane were revealed to be clones, and that the real MJ was kept in status and would have to try and catch-up with everything she had missed.)

...And now we got Skrull invasions with characters in possible status. Yeesh.

Spider-Man was actually going to be extended for one or two more seasons with one season all about having Peter travel through time looking for Mary Jane. One episode planned was Spidey travelling to the Victorian times and encountering Carnage who the people there thought he was Jack The Ripper.

But the animation studio closed and Marvel didn't want to make the same mistake like they did with the last 6 episodes of X-Men by having a different animation team and the final episode was in it's final stages so they couldn't alter the ending hence why it was left open ended.

It worked for what it was anyway, so they didnt need to change it

Hearing there were two extra seasons intended is interesting, I knew about the Carnage plot, but nothing beyond that. I wouldnt have trusted the Jack The Ripper Carnage plot to translate to screen after how they handled Carnage last time.

I never understood why they retconned the marriage in the cartoon; it's not like the show lasted much longer after the wedding.

Well the original intention was to do two more seasons as explained.

I'm glad they didn't as well. I thought the animation was brilliant and I'd rather have it end the way it did than to have a different animation style that would probably be unrecognisable. They've seriously got to release the whole series of this on DVD. Pretty much everything else has come out on DVD except this.

Well, all except X-Men and the first season of The Incredible Hulk (let us not speak of the second season)

It truly was awesome. It was the thing that intruduced me to Superheroes. I remember when they showed it in Mexico, and then they showed the unlimited one and I was all like"What the hell is this waht happened to the other spiderman?
