Exactly! And a cover by John Romita Jr., too!

And it's based on the original Spidey and Wolverine story. So I'm definitely going to pick this one up. Loved the cold war angle and how the deaths in the original story weighed heavily on Peter's conciseness.

I never read the original story, so I'll probably skip it.

Am I the only one who thinks that Marvel should reprint the story they're referencing in the What If? issues they produce?

This link goes to a very detailed review of the original story. It give a run down of the events that transpired:

Won't be getting it until Thursday because England always gets the latest titles the day after America does.

Just finished reading it.
Truly a sequel that was 100% true to the spirit of the original.
Gets two thumbs from me.

Can I have a summary if you don't mind? I don't think I have enough cash to get this one--today at least--and I'd really like to know. :)

Spider-man is so upset over Charlies death that Mephisto appears and offers to fix it if he can make sure he and MJ never get married. Peter agrees.

It starts several years later. The story opens up with Nick Fury and Natasha interrogating the agent that trained Charlie. Nebo tells them the events that followed after Charlie's death. Instead of heading home, Peter had agreed to help Logan locate Alex who was Charlemagne's younger sister. She had been taken prisoner by the KGB during a deep cover mission. Under the guidance of Nebo, Logan and Peter fought their way into the Russian compound and freed her. This was the first step towards Peter deviating from his strict code of morals.

The story comes back to the interrogation room where Fury asks Nebo why Peter never returned home. The Russian says that Peter stayed behind because the kid felt a need to protect Alex. To make up for the death of Charlie.
During this time Peter trained under Nebo, so that he could become prepared for what the world of black ops would throw at them. He even started to fall for Alex who had a certain resemblance to Gwen. Peter gained a better grasp of his spider-sense, to the point of being a precog, and after a while he started going out on field ops missions. The four of them started making a living as soldiers of fortune, with the occasional persecution from the Russian government. Logan encouraged Peter towards this direction, neither being heroes any longer.

The story finally comes to the present. Logan, Peter and Alex wants the Russians to leave them alone so they devise a plan.
During some downtime in a safehouse out in the wilderness, the trio gets surrounded. Turns out Peter had through his precognition manipulated events to fall into place. He had ratted out Nebo to SHIELD. Nebo in turn led them to the safehouse cabin. SHIELD intervenes the Russians from capturing Alex. Fury trades Nebo for the lives of Logan, Peter and Alex. Peter gives Natasha a farewell letter addressed to MJ.

The trio is let go from SHIELD custody free to vanish once more.
Fury mentions that his intel provided informs that they went on to cut the black ops world down to size.

They weren't that deeply committed to each other at that point in history.
They were good friends that supported each other, but MJ wasn't ready for a commitment yet.
Since Peter never returned from the cold...
Following the logic of the story, there was no possible way for the two to patch up again.

The What If issue has nice summary at the start, so you don't need to read the original. The original though on the other hand packs an emotional punch.

If you have access to both issues then I would recommend reading it in chronological order.

Great story

Not sure why it was called Spider-Man VS Wolverine though, I was expecting a battle.

So, I ended up buying it. I was going to buy SPIDER-MAN: SWING SHIFT DIRECTOR'S CUT # 1, but my store didn't have it.

I've yet to read it, but it looks good.

Good shtuff. Its a comic where Peter grows up, doesn't live with his aunt, has a full-time job that pays well so he can support his aunt, and he expands on his skills and abilities. But this would never have worked in 616. No wheatcakes.

Because it's a continuation of the story had Peter not traveled back home.
The battle between Peter and Logan happened in the original.

I read it about half an hour ago. Pretty good stuff...not *as* good as I thought--and hoped-- it'd be, but still pretty good. I really love that cover, too. :p

Spidey had a pretty cool new costume, and I thought it was a fun read.

A Black Ops bad @$$ Spidey sounds really appealing. Not that I would want the regular 616 Spidey to go down this path or anything... but it would be good to see him maybe showing up on Exiles or something

Wash your mouth! We already have a messed up Spidey without needing to throw this one at Chris Claremont's feet. :D

I never read the original and I enjoyed this issue very much. Everything pertinent is explained in the beginning. I didn't know this was a sequel until I came online. Therefore I don't think its important for them to reprint the original story.

i wonder if that is a realistic application of spider-man's spidersense
to be able to go to the extent of it being a fully blown precog ability......
would be interesting to explore
but would make him too good?

He'd be too good, and too powerful. Therefore, it'd start to get boring.

Didn't really enjoy this.

Peter hanging around logan whilst he kills? No chance.

Make a mild exception give the circumstances but not to form a trio like that. As for the training of the spider-sense that was a nice touch but other than that i wasn't really intersted in the story.

Peter killing?of course this is a what if? but nevertheless he didnīt start a killing spree when Uncle Ben/Cap Stacy/Gwen died so a complete stranger will make him do it.

I really liked it. It was like a dream come true. A mature spiderman that had a past and who had grew and changed over time. He wasn't swinging around ny worrying about harry osborn. He was like a real person instead of a cartoon sitcom.

I thought the art was really good too. I like the costume. I like the way his precoqnition worked. I thought the story was a little rough, but it was great to see Pete without Aunt May.

The What If? was riffing off the psychological messy outcome of the 1987 one shot issue of Spidey vs Wolverine.

The story was set in the world of black ops and espionage. Peter was in close to a breakdown in the end of those 48 pages.

Is it hard to see this events unfolding in this direction if he hadn't returned to MJ's open arms? In this story he ADAPTS the harsh rules of the covert world.

Really some people...
