It isn't told through photos. It was originally but that was abandoned.

I THINK it's set in the real world. But I think you're right about it being about Secret Wars.

1985 will tie into upcoming Wolverine and FF story arcs, however not much info on it except it will be a Stephen King-inspired title Millar calls “Marvel’s Chronicles of Narnia.” :S

I think the idea is various Marvel characters enter "the real world." Guess sort of like unfinished Grant Morrison's Authority story.
