How goes it, all? I'm new to the board and did a quick search on "The Goon", only to realize that, other than being mentioned here and there through various threads, there hasn't been a thread specifically for displaying affection for this series (well, since September '07, anyway).

Anywho, who out there reads and dig Eric Powell's "The Goon"? I personally love it. It single-handedly got me back into comics after a 6 year hiatus and got me back into the local comic shops every month.

The writing is great (The perfect balance of comedy, horror, and the ocassional serious dramatic moment, as well as the occasional 1940's throwback dialogue) and the artwork is top-notch (Will Eisner meets Bruce Timm meets with some Jack Davis thrown in for good meassure). It's, IMO, one of the most refreshing comics that I've ever read.

Any other fans out there?

I was finally able to pick up the Chinatown book and am looking forward to The Goon coming out on a monthly basis this year. Been too long between issues, so this should help get this book the attention it deserves!

Just read the Chinatown gn and was profoundly moved by the story and the way that Powell laid it all out. I'm really happy that he's decided to go with a monthly format for the book, because it really is a treasure in today's market.

Is no one else reading this book? I think it's been fantastic since it returned, and Powell seems to be laying out the framework for another great arc. The new priest is creepy as $%@*!

I've never read The Goon but I have been intrigued by it for a couple of years at least. I was really coming close to picking up Vol. 1 of the TPBs when my LCS guy told me that it was a spin-off from Hellboy. Is that right? To be honest, Hellboy has never piqued my interest and that nugget of info from my LCS guy has put me off of trying The Goon somewhat.

So, do you need to be familiar with the Hellboy comics in order to get the most out of reading The Goon? Or could someone who's never read a Hellboy comic in their life (like me) enjoy it just as much as a hardcore Hellboy fan?

Also, what do people like so much about this book? Is it similar in concept to Hellboy at all? Is it a humorous read or quite gritty?

Any thoughts you may have on these questions would be appreciated.

...........wow . they'll let any one run a comicbook shop - the goon and hellboy "teamed up" for one issue - ask your LCS guy if luke cage is related to nick cage - then shop somewhears else

He's probably thinking of Satan's Sodomy Baby, which is a spin off from Hellboy. Mignola called up Powell and said, hey, could you do Hellboy for me and add some anal births and li'l hellspawn with giant schlongs? The rest is comic book history.

Man...my LCS guy's so full of s**t! I mean, this isn't really news to me after shopping from him for a number of years now but somehow I just trusted him on this. More fool me.

OK, so is there anywhere on-line that I can get a free taste of what The Goon is like? You know, to try before I buy.

EDIT: No worries, I found previews on the Dark horse website.

Coincidence that I should see this thread today because I only just noticed an ad for it in Buffy: Season 8 #11.

Looks good, will be interested in reading people's thoughts on it (The Goon, that is).

Absolutely love it, and one of the most entertainingly scripted books out there. The conversations between the Goon & Frankie are creative, bizarre and usually hysterical.

I find the book loses something when someone other than Powell is doing the art, though. Probably just me.

I'm a big fan. The Goon and All Star Superman are the two remaining monthly-or-so titles I pick up.

I've been reading it in trade. Up to volume 5 and haven't read Chinatown yet. Next to Hellboy, The Walking Dead, and a few select others, The Goon is on my "must read" list.

The Goon is awesome. I visited with you guys at your booth at Comic Con. All of them are very nice and the direction of the comic looks really good.

Without a doubt the Goon is one of the best titles out there... look at my avatar for Satan's sake!

If they put this movie out they better remain true to this perfect comic or I'll deposit fecal matter into David Fincher's mouth.

Eric Powell is an awesome talent. It's rare you find a great artist and a great writer.

Stay black.

I love the Goon. It's probably one of the best books out there. I haven't read Chinatown yet.

Eric Powell has brought so much to this industry. If somebody with his originality can gain such a level of mainstream recognition, I have high hopes for the future of comics.
