View Full Version : If you could only buy 10 ongoing Marvel titles for the next few years...

If you could only buy 10 monthly ongoing titles from Marvel for the next few years what would you choose and why? Is it the writing, artwork, creative teams, single character or team appeal, event tie-in, etc.

- For the purposes of the thread assume none of the titles without a current cutoff date will not be canceled.

- Anything solicited up until today counts such as....Cable, etc.

Captain America and Iron Fist because they are two of the three best titles in comics.

New and Mighty Avengers because I enjoy them (especially NA) and I am a huge Bendis fan.

Black Panther because I enjoy it and with a bit of tweaking could be great not just pretty good. I love Storm and the Panther together.

Throw in a couple X books and that gives me a few to play with.

well played, princesa. i'm right there with you:

-immortal iron fist (what else is there to say?)
-captain america (ditto)
-new avengers (only cause i cant imagine MA sticking around for the long haul)
-thunderbolts
-something cosmic... maybe nova or the guardians of the galaxy that's coming in march... DnA have been doing so well so far i want them to keep it coming.
-ultimate spider-man ('nuff said)
-the order (loves me some fraction)
-daredevil, cause that book has delivered solidly for the past 2-3 years and shows no signs of slowing down
-criminal (marvel: icon counts, right?)
-maybe thor? maybe punisher: MAX? i guess it'd be a toss up between those two.

i'd say an x book, but since i havent been following messiah complex i dont have the remotest idea what the new x-status-quo will be when all's said and done. and frankly i don't care about the x-men anymore.

I am greatly saddened that I will be sans Deadpool for the first time in 10 years, but I'd have to go with...

Amazing Spider-Man - BND is taking Spidey from angst and back to Silver Age stories. I like it.
Fantastic Four - With Doom having his hands in everything from symbiotes to Asgardians, I can't wait to see what he'll have in for the Four down the road.
New Avengers - Secret Invasion.
Mighty Avengers - Secret Invasion. Artwork.
Avengers: The Initiative - Taskmaster / Ant-Man dynamic.
Immortal Iron Fist - This book is perfect.
Thunderbolts - Awesome, and has obscure D-listers every other issue.
Thor - This item of literature tis verily flawless.
X-Men: First Class - My comedy sidekick to and in place of Cable & Deadpool.
X-Men Legacy - Mike Carey writes quite the X-book.

It's got a little bit of everything.

Criminal -- Art & writing is amazing. The articles are wonderful. I feel like I get my money's worth every issue!
Nova -- Cosmo! Need I say more? Rich is a fun guy, too. It's also out in space. OOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooo!
Moon Knight -- Crazy vigilante with a cool cast. Count me in!
Runaways -- I really enjoy the team dynamic and the concept.
Fantastic Four -- I love the team and am looking forawrd to the Millar/Hitch run. I hope they're a team again. Plus there is DOOM!
Ultimate Spider-Man -- A fun modern romp in the Spidey mythos.
Amazing Spider-Girl -- Another fun romp in the Spidey mythos but in the future.
Guardians of the Galaxy -- Because it's out in space and I love me some Cosmic MU.
I can't come up with 10 Marvel titles I'd buy for the next couple years.

I don't think I buy 10 now.

Musts:
X-men (whatever its going to be called post Messiah)
Uncanny X-men
Deadpool (in whatever incarnation he exists)
Captain America

Maybes:
Amazing Spiderman: I'm giving One More Day a few more issues to get interesting or its gone.
New Avengers: losing steam with its Mighty Avengers crossovers
New X-men: I'm not sure what form it will take post Messiah
Nova: We'll see how it goes after Conquest
Other X-Titles: I'll give each of the new post Messiah titles a try but who knows.

Drops:
Punisher: No Ennis, no me
Mighty Avengers: Redefines Meh with each issue.

Now here is what I would buy if it existed:

Taskmaster series by Udon

Guardians Of The Galaxy (the real Guardians Of The Galaxy)

Defenders series by Giffen, de Matteis and Maguire.

Avengers by Jim Shooter and John Byrne

Punisher by Steven Grant and Mike Zeck

Daredevil by Frank Miller and David Mazuchelli

Writing first, art second. I find there is something childish in having a slavish devotion to a character. SoI would drop any of these titles if the team changed with an inferior one which is nearly a given when a title is of a high quality. The replacement of Bendis and Maleev on DD by Brubaker and Lark is the only example of a great.

Captain America (Brubaker best writer of Marvel)
Daredevil (ditto)
Thunderbolts (Ellis best writer of Marvel, him too)
Immortal Iron Fist (see above)
Dark Tower (Jae Lee's art is to die for)
The Twelve (incredible start by JMS)

That's all. Can't make it ten. Punisher Max would have been one but Ennis is leaving. Titles I'm not sure about are Amazing Spider-Man (very excited by the bronze age setup), Thor (JMS and great art) and She-Hulk (Peter David always worth following)

I would add Marvel Masterworks though it's not really a title because it's always worthy.

Astonishing X-Men: The last arc was a little lacking, but it's still the best X-Men book since Grant Morrison did his thing.

Captain America: Prior to Brubaker's run, I hadn't read an issue of Cap since Diamondback still had pink hair. Since he took over, it's become a believable mix of espionage, politics, and a present-day Cold War flavor that provides a depth to Steve Rogers that was always lacking.

Criminal - For being better than everything else that Brubaker's writing right now, which is saying quite a lot.

Daredevil - I keep waiting for Marvel to mess this up, but they keep putting people like Bendis, Mack, and Brubaker on it. I tend to think this, like the Punisher, would work better as a MAX title, but as it stands, it's a consistently great read that feels like one giant crime epic.

Kabuki - For being consistently awesome since the Caliber Press days and utterly captivating every time.

New Avengers - The earlier issues were more engaging, but I'm still digging it, mostly thanks to the witty conversation bits.

Punisher - Until Garth Ennis got on board, you couldn't pay me to pick up a Punisher comic. Someone at Marvel apparently got smart and realized that a comic about a homicidal war veteran with a bunch of guns and a chip on his shoulder would probably work better when written for adults. That someone was right and with someone like Ennis writing it, it's become one of the best things they've ever released. Dunno who will follow-up the Ennis run, but if they're even half as good, I'll stick around.

Runaways - By keeping things relatively self-contained, both BKV and Joss Whedon have been able to successfully deliver an all-around fun read that's interesting and relatable to both younger readers and adults. To both writers credit, it's also never fallen into the trap of passing off disposable, idiotic stories as being funny or charming, something that typically kills most teen superhero books.

Thunderbolts: With someone like Warren Ellis writing it, this goes from being a fairly corny book about reformed villains to a multifaceted book about characters who walk the line between good and evil. Make this yet another one that I think would work better as a MAX title.

X-Factor: As far as I'm concerned, Peter David's writing the best x-related book of the bunch. It's not bogged down in continuity, the dialog is naturalistic and pithy, and the artwork is expressive, but not overly flashy.

I'm reading a few other things off and on, but most of it's so unremarkably average or completely redundant that I just don't care.

Avengers: The Initiative
Cable & Deadpool
The Defenders
Guardians of the Galaxy

Spider-man Loves Mary Jane
Thor
Thunderbolts
X-men

Immortal Iron Fist
Captain America
Thunderbolts
Daredevil
Criminal
X-Factor
Iron Man
Astonishing X-Men by Ellis/Bianchi
X-Men: Legacy by Mike Carey
Fantastic Four by Millar/Hitch

Those are the only current Marvel titles I see myself picking up regularly for the future. I'm currently following Punisher: MAX (but I'm out once Garth Ennis leaves) & Annihilation: Conquest (but that's an event mini as opposed to an ongoing book) and I can't think of anything else that's current or upcoming, other than the ten I already listed, that I'm too excited about. Maybe if Nicieza or BKV were to get a new Marvel project.

That's tough. I'd have to say

1) Amazing Spider-Man
2) Hulk
3) Mighty Avengers
4) New Avengers
5) Avengers: The Initiative
6) Ghost Rider ( I don't know why more people don't read this )
7) Captain America
8) Amazing Spider-Girl (sister reads it.)
9) Thor
10) Fantastic Four

This is kinda hard for me since a lot of the books I'm reading/interested in are either minis (ie- Twelve, Conquest, etc.), only temporary pick-ups (ie- ongoing tie-ins to an "event"), are going in a new direction that'll influence whether or not I'll actually get it (the X-books), or are being cancelled (The Order). Anywho, my list would include (numbering is just for convenience and not denoting any sort of "rank"):

1. Captain America
2. Immortal Iron Fist
3. Uncanny X-Men
4. X-Factor
5. X-Men First Class
6. Avengers: The Initiative
7. New Avengers
8. Incredible Hercules
9. Thor
10. Young X-Men or X-Force

1) Astonishing X-Men (current arc is the BEST to date - will cry when Whedon & Casady leave)
2) Captain America
3) Daredevil
4) Immortal Iron Fist
5) Uncanny X-Men
6) Criminal (2-6 all have the hand of Brubaker on them, nuff said)
7) Incredible Hulk/Herc/Pak (which ever one that Greg Pak is on)
8) New Avengers (best banter in all of comics)
9) Fantastic Four (personally, I like where McDuffie went and where Millar might)
10) Kick-Ass (Romita and Millar - are you kidding me?!?! - must have material)

Like others here, I don't currently read 10 Marvel titles. I had to count two Icon titles just to bring the count to seven.

1. Kabuki
2. Criminal
3. Immortal Iron Fist
4. Thunderbolts
5. Avengers: The Initiative
6. Captain America
7. Daredevil

If I had to read 3 more, I guess I'd consider Incredible Herc, Black Panther, and Ghost Rider (is Jason Aaron writing that now or is that coming?).

Max Punisher - cause Frank Castle when he is understood by the writer like Ennis he is very interesting to read.

Deadpool - im a fanboy i would read him just cause he is beyond awesome :)

Criminal - Best comic on the stands right now. Best writer, artist combo.

Daredevil - i like him enough to read him as much as i can.

Captain America - Brubaker nuff said !

Immortal Iron Fist - the same as above

X- Factor or a Madrox ongoing - Madrox is like Deadpool for me.

Nova - is the best young hero and the best cosmic character by far.

Annihilation type comic - Nova and co are very interesting to read.

Runaways - if written as well as by BKV

WoW. Only?
I'll be damned glad if I can actually afford 10 Marvel titles a month a few years from now. $40 a month on nothing but Marvel when there's so many other comics would be a big chunk of any nice comic budget. But I digress...

Anyways, I think I'd go with characters I find fascinating and at least somewhat reliably interesting regardless of creative team, because when it comes down to it, a big company like Marvel is pretty character-centric. That said:

Uncanny X-Men (when it comes to Marvel it doesn't get much better than the X-Men)
Captain America (for pure military style heroism)
Iron Man (for pure cocky techno)
Wolverine (regardless of how tired people claim to be of him I almost always get a kick out of Logan)
Daredevil (Matt can be fascinating when done right)
Avengers (whichever incarnation is still around)
Punisher (gotta love the force of nature that Frank is)
Fantastic Four (the "first family" of comics)

WoW. I just realized it's hard as hell to come up with ten Marvel titles I'd wanna commit to. I could go into spin-off X-Men or Avengers books or books that I think have seen their best days and just don't care for at the moment (Thor, Spider-Man, Hulk), but none of that quite seems right.

1. Daredevil - most consistent book at Marvel
2. Captain America - Bru's run has made this character for me
3. Iron Fist - if you read it you know why
4. New Avengers - The Avenger Team
5. Mighty Avengers - Close second
6. THOR - IT'S FRICKIN THOR!!
7. Moon Knight - great low key crazy main character book
8. Wolverine - the current arc, and the upcoming, is going to be amazing.
9. Uncanny X-Men - Best Mutant book out, and its BRU
10. Thunderbolts - Villians....

that's all I would take if I could with a close second by

11. New Warriors - really starting to pick up
12. Incredible Hercules - ....can't stop reading it, no matter how much I try
13. Young Avngers - if this restarted, Thunderbolts would be down here, and this would be in it's place.
