They have the first Essential: Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man at B&N and I have a 25% off coupon, so I was gonna get it. Thing is, I've never read any Spider-Man before, so I want to know if it shares continuity with the other Essentials or if I can start here.
They all share the same canon. The height of the early "Peter Parker" run, the Carrion saga, ties into the original Clone Saga in ASM, so you may want to avoid that story until you read the Amazing Essentials

I'd second that, but for a different reason.
It isn't necessary to have read any Amazing Spider-Mans to understand what's going on in Spectacular Spider-Man.
However, the early Spectacular Spider-Mans were, by and large, really pretty bad.
So based on that, the Amazing Essentials are definitely the way to go.

Bah.
Big Wheel was immortalised as a FOX episode.
Just to spite you.:evilangry :p

Hey, I love Razorback, so it's not like there was nothing to like about them. But by and large, we're talking unmemorable villains and terrible dialogue.

Even Belladonna is ten times more memorable than any villain since 1999.

i've got volumes 2 and 3 of essential ppsm. The second volume is decent, if a little ho-hum, but the third one is excellent.
There are some seriously kick arse short stories in the third volume and I'd definitely recommend it. You don't need any sort of encylopaedic knowledge of spidey-continuity to enjoy it either. There are some real dark stories in that volume, like the first appearance of Cloak and Dagger and there are some very funny, lighter stories too. I have a strange fondspot for The Ringer and I thought it was gold when Spidey falls over laughing when he's told what the Ringer's name is.
Speaking of Essentials, when can we expect new volumes to come out? I'm dying to get my hands on Amazing from the 80s.
