Did DC have the chance years ago to beat Marvel to the punch (pun intended) and do with Dragon what Marvel's done with Iron Fist? Rather than that oh-so-crappy ret-con that Chuck Dixon did?

Don't think so. Iron Fist has a lot of history in K'un L'un that Brubaker's been exploring and Dragon didn't have that. Overall, I think Marvel's kung fu heroes are much better than DC's.

Y'know, I liked the Dixon series. Of course, I had no idea who Richard Dragon was before that series.

I never read that last version of Richard Dragon. I'd wipe that thing and just go with the Richard Dragon that has been seen since the original series, as his use in The Question for Denny O'Neil and with Oracle are much more interesting.

"Iron Fist has a lot of history in K'un L'un that Brubaker's been exploring and Dragon didn't have that."

I never read the first time they brought back Iron Fist, but it didn't do very well or at least not as well as the new Immortal Iron Fist series, in which you have a couple of writers in Brubaker and Matt Faction that have saw the potential and made it work. The whole past history of Iron Fists and the development of K'un L'un history is more in the new series. It isn't even really mentioned in the original Iron Fist series much.

For the right writer, I think there is plenty in the DC universe tied to kung fu like the League of Assassins, Lady Shiva, Bronze Tiger, Batman, Ra's etc for someone to build a background for a title. You also have this new version of The Question which could be used in such a title. It is just going to have to take someone with some good ideas to make it work.

If I was DC, I might try to get an older writer to work with a newer writer to develop a series. There are a couple of older writers like maybe Denny O'Neil, who created Richard Dragon or Doug Moench, who did all of those Master of Kung Fu books and who might be good to help develop the background for such a title. Another veteran comic writer that studied martial arts is Mike Baron who co-created Nexus and Badger. I don't think that guy has written much for DC or Marvel in years, but he did some good stuff and probably has the background to maybe make something of these characters.

The characters have potential they just need someone with imagination to tackle writing them. They also need to lay off the "no one can beat Batman" b.s.
