View Full Version : I Miss Oakland
I miss Oakland
I was watching a 2Pac video on YouTube and it got me amazingly “homesick” for Oakland.
Now I only lived in Oakland for a little less then three years, but I so completely fell in love with the place.
I miss eating breakfast over at Lois the Pie Queen’s, shopping for books at Dark Carnival, waiting for it to rain and then go soaking at the Japanese Baths over on Peidmont. Just riding around sightseeing on the BART.
I miss the parties over at the Hell’s Angels house on McArthur and the opening party for the Sex Packets album over off of 21st.
I miss the 5 story library.
Hell, sometimes I miss the whores, thugs, hustlers, junkies and winos too.
And the food.
God I miss the food.
I miss Flint’s Bar-B-Q, the best I’ve ever eaten.
I remember this amazing little Central American restaurant right off of the top of Fruitvale that was run by a retired communist revolutionary who had given up the fight and gone into cooking. The place was covered with murals of various glorious moments in the revolution and the burritos were to kill for.
Ahhhhh!!!!!
I know I love Colorado, and this is really where I want to be.
But sometimes I really am sorry to be this far from civilization.

All I know is that as long as I didn't bitch if some guys sat on my stoop, everyone was nice enough to me.
Honestly, I think that I amused them.

I travel to Oakland on business sometimes. I'll have to ask you for places to eat because the Denny's by the airport makes me cry a little inside.

I don't miss any place that I've lived before. Including the town I grew up in.
Sometimes I wonder if there's something wrong with me. I don't have any roots anywhere . . .

Me,either. Growing up as an Army Brat, there are few places that I could call home, though I've lived here in Kansas for almost 20 years now; I still don't feel like this is "home".

I don't miss the particular place I grew up but I miss the entire State.

My trip to Oakland
I fly into Oakland / Go to the Quality in by the airport / Sleep / Wake up and drive to Berkley for my meeting / Go back to Oakland airport and fly home.
The Denny's is disgusting but it's Fuel.

I saw Kurtis Blow at the Ogden back in '81 and I've been listening ever since.

That is so sad when you figure that with-in a mile of the airport there are some of the best places to eat in all of California.
Next time you're there, just cruise a little bit South of the Airport and you'll see what I mean.

Sometimes I wonder if there's something wrong with me. I don't have any roots anywhere . . .I don't necessarily miss places, either. But specific time-and-place combinations? Definitely.
The thing is, for most of my life till I'd been in Vancouver for a few years, I was almost always poor. I'm not at all nostalgic about that.

I grew up in Dublin and remembered Oakland primarily for the aura of insanity it generated in its residents.

I get that feeling about the tourist trap I came from in SouthernNew Jersey. I've adjusted to Tallahassee the past few years and have even grown to like it. But I still miss Cape May.
Sometimes I even miss Lebanon, New Hampshire. Then I remember shoveling my car out of the snow in November.

one of the best Mexican restaurants I ever experienced was in Oakland. Open air mostly... handmade tortillas happening right there... this incredible pork... stuff I can't remember the name of it right now. mmmmmmm!
And an awesome Thai place called the Pnom Penh. OMg that was delicious.

I miss San Francisco, and not just because of friends and stuff. There's just so much I liked about the city that Santa Barbara is lacking.
That said, I'm going to miss the hell out of Santa Barbara too when I finally move away. Because it's bloody pleasant here.

I've been living in Oakland for a few years and I can't lie - I love it. When I first moved here I thought I would get annoyed at the 24/7 Tupac loop that is constantly playing in my neighborhood but I know that as soon as I move away I will miss it. Although it does get a little bothersome when my walls rattle.

Opposite coast, similar experience. Born and raised in New York and from about middle school to high school it was 24/7 Biggie. Even now I hear his stuff blasting from someone's place.

True.
On a bright and sunny fall afternoon, I really miss Spartan stadium.
But I have no desire to back to Lansing, Michigan

hmmm... don't think so, maybe - it was pulled into shreds and quite simple if I remember correctly - man it was good. Mexican cuisine can be very sophisticated or very prosaic but always awesome as long as it's authentic. as far as my experience goes at least.

Yup . . I often get nostalgic about certain places at certain times of the year.
But I've never had a connection that was so strong that made me want to return.
Well, except maybe Japan . . . but that was more of a visit than a place I lived, so it's not the same.

Vancouver's really the only place I lived that I felt a strong connection to. Dunno if that's because we were so nomadic when I was a kid or not.

Having lived in Northern California for 20+ years, I'd have to agree. The drive I took there in 2001 made a pretty huge impression on me - the redwoods, Mendocino, the twisty roads. I'd love to do it again someday in a better car.
And with a camera, obviously.

we don't really have crips and bloods....more like different hoods....funk town, ghost town, 69 village(well not so much any more) etc.....and having lived both places, i'm gonna have to disagree.

I miss eating breakfast over at Lois the Pie Queen’s,
It ain't like it used to be....I had some friends in a few weeks ago, and I took them there....The food was bad, and they had a bug problem :(

Really? The only one left is the one on shattuck, and they have a very strange schedule....
People have fell under the spell of E & J's in the Jack London, for some strange reason....

If you're a Hitchcock fan, visit Bodega (where they filmed 'The Birds')
but do NOT go diving in those waters during sea-lion season.
It's still too bad the A's suck.

I used to miss the town I grew up in, but then I had to move back there for a year, and realised it was my friends, not the place I missed.
Thankfully most have moved out of there now - maybe harder to see them, as they've moved far and wide, but that makes it mroe of an occasion when you do get to see them.

Yes, there's something to be said about a city where a politician can get carjacked in broad daylight.
But maybe that's the only way things will get done I suppose.
Of course SF isn't much better these days.
I do, however, love how BART stops right at the Coliseum. Never was much of a Giants fan myself.

I am really sorry to hear that.
Back in the 80's it was really tasty food, plus it was only about two blocks from the house.

The one I used to go to was on San Pablo and only ever seemed to be open late at night. But I was used to staying up much later then.

I lived in Seattle for a year; I sometimes miss it a lot. Mainly in winter, when I'm remembering the remarkably-temperate climate over there.
But also the laid-back culture, where people would casually bring their dogs into the Barnes & Noble where I worked, and no one made a fuss about it.

But then I remember the perpetual cloud cover!

Yeah, Seattle is still my favorite city in the world. I lived above a Starbucks in downtown for a year and loved it. Big enough to have stuff going on, but small enough that the rest of the country usually forgets about it.
Living in San Francisco now; while I certainly enjoy it, it's still not as clean and classy as the Emerald City.
