I think he was last seen during Rann-Thanagar War and Infinite Crisis. Nothing since then, as far as I know.

This is the version of Starman I am most fond of Will Payton is one of my all-time favorite comic book characters. I really felt he was a unique character that really showed a humanistic aspect that we don't always get to see with super-heroes. I am probably in the minority in terms of him being the best Starman, I believe most people would say it was the Starman of the most recent series by James Robinson. Although I was not a fan of what happened to Will Payton and the idea of him and Prince Gayvn being one in the same. I was happy to see the character brought back and not left being killed off by Eclipso.
The very early part of the Starman series by Roger Stern and Tom Lyle are one of my all time favorite series. Will was the everyman the Peter Parker of the DC Universe that is why sometimes it is hard to see him as a ruler on some distant planet. I would love for some writer to come along and separate the two. I feel both characters have their merit and both deserve their place among the DCU.

I liked the Will Payton Starman and would love to see in a series or guest in another book. Maybe even join a team like Outsiders or JLA.

I second that Will Payton is the best Starman, and Stern and Lyle's run told the greatest stories about this character. I love his Invasion tie-ins, where he first meets all heroes. His reaction to people like Green Lantern and Atom was great.
Alas, I never read Eclipso: The Darkness Within, but I'm glad that wasn't the end of him. I doubt we'll ever see him in a solo book again, but he should definitely be a bigger part of the DCU again. A guy who's basically a living, walking star should at least belong with the Big Guns in JLA.

I agree Will is my favorite Starman. I would really like to see him come back with maybe a new identity. I know other people suggested Super-Nova as a name which would fit his power set. But really anything would make me happy. Although I would like to seem him separated from Prince Gavyn.
Actually like both of these versions of Starman. But would really like for them to exist on their own separate from one another. I liked Will original origin.

Will Payton Starman series was one of the earliest comic books I ever bought and read. I collected about 30 issues with some gaps between them.
I found Will Payton to be very interesting everyman character for his dynamic characterization

Yeah I had the first year or so of the Payton Starman series. I liked how Robinson tried to tie all the other Starmen into his Jack Knight series but I agree with those who said the merged Prince Gavyn/Payton thing wasn't the best solution.
Maybe some writer will "unmerge" them one day and bring him back to Earth...

The Gavyn/Will Payton thing was pretty convoluted, but seeing as how it looked like Robinson wanted Courtney to be the next to take the rod, I think the solution wasn't that bad. If DC ever starts using it's cosmos more, then Payton will be a major player. The man is a living star who rules a universe, he's a major cosmic player. And at least this way, he's still Starman.
If Stargirl hadn't shown, Payton would be a great fit in the JSA.
Oh, and Jack Knight >>> Payton. :P

Thanks for the updates but that only kind of answers half the question.
I guess what im trying to findout is where he now? what name he goes under or is still starman? And with all the space stuff going on the past 2-3 years with crisis etc where has he been?

It is safe to assume he is still merged with Gavyn until we are shown otherwise. Prince Gavyn made a brief appearance in the Rann/Thanagar War mini.

He usally is in his Prince Gavyn look when ever he appears now since that is his true form. The only time he used the Will Payton look since he found out who he really is was when he went to see Will Paytons sister.

It's amazing that Prince Gavyn, who only showed up a couple of times before he was killed off in CoIE and practically forgotten, is now in control of Will Payton, a character who was popular enough to have his own series and who was wonderfully by one of the industries great writers, Roger Stern.

Much as I liked Robinson's series, as a reader of the Payton series by Stern as well it's hard not to notice how much of that series was bollixed up by the Gavyn retcon. How do you explain Doctor Melrose and the Power Elite if Payton's powers were "really" the result of his merging with Gavyn?

Or how do you explain what Eclipso told Will, that he was responsible for Will getting hid by Melrose's power ray in a plot to use the young hero's power to take over the world in Eclipso: The Darkness Within. So we get two retcons from Prince Gavyn merging with Will Payton, but we haven't yet gotten an actual good story from this concept. Seems unfair :D

Is it true could the comic legend himself have actually read my post. Well all I could say is that Mr. Stern you provided my childhood and my adulthood with many fond memories and stories. I enjoyed every bit of your work. You made me a comic book fan.

Well, even though this thread is out of date from over 2 years ago I wanted to add my 2 cents.
I am currently waiting for the video game DC Universe Online to go live in a few days and being able to pick up my copy.
Since the beta ended a couple of days ago it got me to reminiscing about differnt stories I had read in the DC Universe over my lifetime.
Suddenly I wondered, "What ever happened to" and started searching the net. I was happy to see that I did remember correctly that Starman's secret i.d. was Will Payton
I collected this comic in my late teens/early twenties and still remember the character, even though all my issues were taken in the divorce from my first wife, and I haven't read a single word about him until tonight since at least 1993 or 1994. I am going to have to see if I can find back issues of this title so I can fill in the gaps in my memory about the character that unfortunately time has played havoc with.
During this titles run I missed the end of the series while I was serving in the military and did not have access to comics for a long time. So I always wondered what happened to the character.
During my research tonight I have learned some of the answers to that question. I am now going to try to run down the retcon into the Prince Gavyn story from Starman vol. 2 to fill in the details as well.
I just wanted to add to this thread, my thanks for this wonderful character. I also hope that he can reemerge from the dust bin of history and bring back some of the fun and enjoyment to others that he brought to me as a young man.

Will Payton was definitely one of the better new characters out there from that time. His title had a healthy run and there was no reason why he couldn't have become a major supporting character or cornerstone member of a team book. His death was rather unceremonious. I didn't like the merging of him with the cosmic Starman as it turned him into a secondary character/personality to the Prince Gavyn character and is pretty much played that way since. Which is a shame as I really liked the Gavyn Starman as well (about the only Starmen I don't like is the blue-skinned one and the adult brain-addled version of Starboy).
