I'll buy the TPB. So many things happen in these issues such as the new team comes together--with then new members such as Magik & Magma--to fight the Demon Bear along with the original 4 New Mutants (without Karma); Doug Ramsey at last joins the team via with the introduction of Warlock; Selene joins the Hellfire Club (bad for Sebastian Shaw & Emma Frost as well as the X-Men & New Mutants); Lila Cheney is introduced, & we learn what happens with the weird link between Wolfsbane & Sunspot with the powers of Dagger & Cloak respectively...

The Demon Bear is where I want you to touch.

If I had enough money, I would buy a copy of this for every X-fan who started reading the books when I did (1993) or later, and then make them read it. Claremont's New Mutants was even better than his X-Men.

Yes, you do. I'm too young to have read the book when it first came out, but I bought a huge run off of eBay in college and found out just how many great stories I missed out on. Awesome book... anything from #17-54, annuals 1-3, and the special edition is money.

Uh... I've never heard the latter parts. I doubt Wolverine would survive a tussle with the Demon Bear, its primary weakness is magic. As far as I know it's only shown up in the initial New Mutants story and a later X-Force story, neither of which featured Wolverine, though I could be wrong. Didn't think it had any ties to the Wendigo either.

It's sad cause it's true. I loved his stuff with JR Jr. but his New Mutants were just a cut above what he was doing with the regular team.

I always felt Claremont's "spin off" Xbooks (New Mutants, Excalibur) were generally better than what he was doing in Uncanny at the time. His Wolverine stuff was solid too actually.

Totally agree. Especially his NM. There's just something that resonated to me when I started reading these books. Although, his Excalibur wasn't as funny as he was trying to make it out to be, it was far better than the Outback era of the team, imo. Re-reading his stuff is making me appreciate how good of a writer he used to be yet pi$$es me off at how far he's fallen.

It was a meh period of time for me. I didn't care for the characters the same way I did from say UXM 166-213. Sure, I liked the new additions, but I was missing Kitty and Kurt and Rachel. Dazzler, Longshot and Psylocke just never seemed to have the same chemistry the previous line-up did.

Isn't this the story that introduces Rachel Summers to this time-line?

Yes, however, Rachel Summers appears simultaneously in The New Mutants #18 & Uncanny X-Men #184 released in the same month. Chronologically, The New Mutants #18 happens first & the next day she is hunted by Selene in Uncanny X-Men #184. Rachel returns "home" back at Xavier's school after the X-Men rescue Rachel from Selene.

No. Rachel is just reintroduced with a flashback of the military killing Xavier & blowing up the mansion. Rachel runs away from Illyana when she eventually realizes she may be in the wrong timeline. The story picks up in Uncanny X-Men #184.

No. The Demon Bear is related to Cheyenne Native American folklore. The Wendigo is also from Indian folklore, but a separate legend from the Demon Bear.

The Great Beasts have nothing in common with either the Demon Bear or the Wendigo.

I loved it too (along with the Claremont/Millar solo and Simonson/Mignola Jungle Adventure) but my fave Wolvie story is still probably the BWS Weapon X. It's a real tradgedy that it's been so mangled recently by hacks like Loeb and Way. :(

That was a good one. Yeah, it's too bad it's getting mangled so badly. I blame Paul Jenkins for writing that awful Wolverine: Origins mini a few years ago that got the ball rolling.

Yeah... but we all know the real mastermind behind it all is fatty Q. Just part and parcel of his overarching plan to dismatle the mutants piece by piece... man, who knew he'd be so bitter getting X-Factor after being passed over for Uncanny. :P

Claremont, PAD and Hama's excellent work on Wolvie's solo shouldn't go overlooked, especially Hama who was on the book for years of solid stories. I really liked Meltdown too, though that's largely because it has (sexy) Alex and Scarlett. <3 <3

At this point, I'm not sure how to "fix" Wolverine. Maybe give him to Gaiman and Bachalo exclusively (no X-Men, no Avengers, no X-Force, NO ORIGINS)and throw in Dani as his new young(ish) protoge on some sort of personal discovery/vision quest? It could work...

I don't remember where, but I am pretty sure it was the Demon Bear saga, that was available on some site. Where it was the original individual pages in black & white, each going for over a $1000.00

I need to start finding old new mutants backissues *writes on checklist*

Bill Sienkiewicz's entire art run is only The New Mutants #18-31 w/The New Mutants Annual #1 (cover only); however, he is the inker on The New Mutants #35-39 before leaving the series completely. Bill Sienkiewicz's contribution added another layer for Chris Claremont's scripts. Magik looks more demonic or evil by his inks (to contrast her bright silver armor & Soulsword). The same applies to Selene when she is dressed as a normal citizen except for the heavy shadows around her. Magma really appears to be made of lava. Warlock looks like he's made of wires...

However, I would seek out Chris Claremont's stories in The New Mutants #1-54, The New Mutants Special Edition #1, The New Mutants Annual #1-3, Marvel Graphic Novel #4: The New Mutants (1st New Mutants), & Marvel Team-Up #100 (1st Karma)

God yes. Bill Sienkiewicz was the first artist I actively sought out. His covers were beyond cool - and so different than anything else at the time.

I'm not sure if Bill Sienkiewicz designed Warlock, but I'm sure Claremont gave him a head's up about Warlock when he got assigned the book. This also means he designed Warlock's father, the Magus.

Alan Davis does Warlock justice as does Jackson Guice, Rick Leonardi, & Arthur Adams. They seemed to have fun drawing Warlock because he's so freaky looking in appearance...

Do you think the names Warlock & Magus are a nod to Jim Starlin's Adam Warlock stories?

I think they are not going to be recolored, but the colors will be improved as the other The New Mutants Classics TPB have been.

Well, Chris added "demon" to the bear because in the original legend he's just called the Great Bear or Bear. Demon Bear sounds more ominous.
