Newsarama updated on the Countdown to Final Crisis #16's (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=142864&highlight=Countdown) ongoing story with the writer and editor as well as putting up a preview for next week's Countdown #15.

There are a few quotes that I found interesting. Regarding the Monitors here's the quote that seems to clear up the whole ordeal between "Bob" and "Solomon's intentions" as well as explaining Earth 51's own plan which was pretty apparent and interesting:

NRAMA: You went into it this week, but since Monarch spells it out – Solomon wanted all the power for himself, and to achieve this, he needed Ray Palmer stopped, right?

TB: Well..."Solomon" (the bearded Monitor) thought that the separate Monitors needed to become one again. You might see that as a personal power-grab, but I think he really believes the multiverse would be better off with one united Monitor. So he tried to "absorb" his brothers and sisters, but they're already too different and individual to reintegrate. As for why they want Ray Palmer, it's because he's the key to averting the Great Disaster. Why would they want the Great Disaster to happen? Keep reading.

MC: Umm... Yep.

NRAMA: And why did he kill Duela Dent again?

TB: Cuz she was really annoying.

MC: Ye-- hey! Wait a minnit!!! Tony... How can I sit back and take this easy if you don't give the real answer?

TB: Okay. Okay. Duela strayed outside her universe, and Monitors don't like that. Plus, he needed to get the other Monitors to stop being Watchers and start being Doers. So he shocked them from their ennui by taking action himself. er...right, Mike?

MC: Yep.

NRAMA: And the whole "antagonism" between Bob and Solomon was a ruse from
the very start?

TB: Yep.

MC: Damn, yer good at this, Tony!

NRAMA: The Monitor of Universe 51-- as you said last week-- hid Palmer here, or at least kept his presence a secret, even to his fellows when Palmer's importance was made known. Is it safe to assume that Monitor-51 was sheltering Palmer to allow him to complete his work?

TB: Yep. Monitor 51, a.k.a. The Littlest Monitor, clearly wasn't in on the Bob and Solomon's secret plans.

MC: And had been one of the first Monitors to exercise his individuality by operating on his own-- without even a teammate-- like Solomon and Bob did!Pete Woods covers and interior art have been TERRIFIC. I wished he did more and the coloring/art over the course of the last couple of issues have been much better. I'm increasingly curious as to why Monarch is so hell bent on ruling the multi verse especially all so suddenly after he came back from the Wildstorm universe and the Bludhaven stuff.

Superman Prime looks like he's going to have Solomon on a leash but we'll see what happens. Forager gives Jimmy Olson some interesting news, he's a soul catcher and perhaps is the one who is containing the dead New God souls. Queen Belthera continues to show up in her awful costume and non-interesting appearances.

With regards to the next issue preview, it's looking VERY good on the Jason Todd/Earth-51 Batman. There's a really interesting conversation between the two that I think makes Jason see how much better off the Batman of his earth was. So far I'm really loving Earth 51. Also the cover to the next issue is a nice homage to the Iwo Jima flag raising but the heights on Donna, Kyle, and Jason are off.

Lastly apparently those who've been following Countdown Arena will be getting a pay-off of sorts by having the selected winners of those fights show up in the next issue. Personally I found Arena to be irrelevant to the story outside of finding out who's going to joining Monarch's army and getting some cool power displays from him. Really just stick to Countdown and don't waste your money since you'll be seeing who won anyway.

This issue's backup origin: Sinestro

Man i'd love for Prme to show up next issue to take Monarch down a peg or two.

By the way could you give me a list of the heroes who won during arena. Never got around to buying it

Via Wikipedia (and some of these make my head hurt):

Monarch's battles go underway, as Eve of Shadows (Earth-13), Vampire Batman (Earth-43), Ray "the Ray" Palmer (Earth-6), Scarab (Earth-26), Hal Jordan Jr. (Earth-12), Starwoman (Earth-7), Johnny Quick (Earth-3) and Wonder Woman (Earth-34) are selected as Monarch's champions, with whom he will compose his army.

Others, such as the Batman of Earth-19 and Apollo of Earth-50 become Monarch's "backups" held in stasis. In some instances, characters die, although the Bat of Earth-40, returns having been sired as a vampire.

Throughout the series, tensions fester between the all-American Superman of Earth-31 and his Russian Earth-30 counterpart. Superman-31 and vampire Bat are able to conclude that a transporter miraculously designed by Earth-33's Ted Kord can travel the multiverse. After the group deduce the connection between Monarch and Captain Atom, Breach volunteers to collect his other counterparts from across the 52 in an attempt to overpower Monarch.

In the arc's conclusion, the Supermen fight is interrupted by a barrage of alternate Captain Atoms, who Monarch is able to overpower and absorb into himself, revealing Ted Kord-33 and Breach (actually the brainwashed Breach of New Earth, not of Earth-8) to be his accomplices, false hope of escape used as a distraction. Breach betrays Monarch, giving Superman-31 the transporter to save everyone onboard the ship. The last man standing after Superman-31's departure and Superman-15's sacrifice, the Red Son Superman of Earth-30 becomes Monarch's final team member.
