Now I know it was designed to bring in new, more true to 21st century life, origins of older characters. I personally think with all the changes they have made, Marvel is not the same it was before. This is not a bad thing, the older Marvel series were applicable in their day but I think now, in the 21st century, the Ultimate series would be the perfect springboard to launch new characters. I think its high time the old norm was shaken up and new heros and villans are thrown into the mix to create new stories we dont expect, that are treated with the 21st century mindset that is expected of tje Ultimate universe series.

this is true,

the ultimate universe also changes the characteristics that make their 616 counterparts either boring or unfavourable.

take Ultimate Captain America for instance. In the 616 universe, he was too much of a nice guy. A great iconic character, but today's comics demand more complex characters.

the ultimate universe makes him more contriversal with his willness to always use violence as a primary solution and making him more morally and politically conservative. he's more of a soldier than a hero.

or Ultimate Giant Man, whose actions speak for themselves with the hole drugs, and treason and wife beating thing.

ultimate wolverine is more violent, professor x is quite manipulative, collosus is gay (not a bad thing, i'm not homophobic or anything), nightcrawler is a killer and homophobe and possibly a rapist (God, I hope not)

In ultimate fantastic four, i find it funny that most of their adventures take place because of ultiamte mr. fantastic's screwups. i mean, look at all the crap that he makes, getting the zombie fantastic four into the ultimate universe, screwing with his peers to get alone time to make the cosmic cube, bring the silver surfer to earth and causing catastrophe. i wouldn't be suprised if it really was his screwup and not doom's that caused the accident that gave them their powers.

all in all, the ultiamte universe revolutionizes everything (I hope Namor comes back)
