Uh..... What the HELL is up with Countdown?

Ages ago, all we see is the Monitors arguing over "hey this one guy's gone rogue, killing, and this other guy's gone rogue PROTECTING them instead of doing nothing but MONITORING..."

Now "Bob" wants to kill Ray Palmer on Earth-51?

What the steaming poo?

Apparently, Bob was deep undercover.

"Mongo only pawn... in game of life."

The "bad" Monitor and Bob were teaming up to kill Ray Palmer and all the anomalous people in the Multiverse. But, oops, the bad Monitor dude killed Bob 'cause he was secretly in league with Monarch.

Wrong!

The 'bad' Monitor killed Bob because he thought Bob's power and essence would flow into him (making him more powerful and one step closer to being the 'Prime' Monitor, or something like that). He indicated that somebody else had convinced him that this was the case, but in no way implied that it was Monarch.

It was an interesting turn of events although I'm wondering if "Bob" was actually under the influence of Darkseid's little chess game to get to Ray Palmer such as the other pawns like Monarch and Pied Piper are tied to the chess game.

This turn made no sense to me...

Why did he need to bring along superheroes to help him, just to turn on them? He transported them to different universes. He was the one who knew if Palmer had been there. And in the end he was the one who knew if he'd left.

Really all Jason Todd and Donna Troy did was make the search time on the planet smaller by helping to look. But Bob had 51 over friends he could use to do that himself... so really it makes zero sense.

Why take along superheros and take the risk they'll kick your ass?

It was the second time Countdown had actually made me excited for the next issue (which in a 52 issue series, is bad) but it makes no sense.

I thought he needed them to find Ray? Although he was always the one who seemed to be able to determine whether or not he was in a certain universe so that doesn't make sense. Maybe DC decided at the last minute to have him turn and didn't consider logic.

He said he needed them... but if you look back, they did nothing of value. Nothing him and 51 of his other Monitor buddies could of done just as easily.

Well, they themselves were anomalies and would have needed to be killed off eventually. That's the only thing I can think of.

I think it has less to do with Bob and more with Darkseid's plan for them since they also occupy the same chessboard so it seems like they're being manipulated to tag alongside Bob.

I'm thinking (And this is just an 'excuse' as I to agree that this all seems fairly illogical) that maybe he needed them because they were more 'personable'. If you noticed, there weren't any times where Bob actually went anywhere alone, even when they split up. And when they came into contact with Heroes from all of the worlds, it was Donna/Jason/Kyle who talked, and got information (such as who Palmer tagged).

Can you imagine if bob had just shown up, asking, 'Where's Ray Palmer'? Considering his appearance, surely some hero, from some world would have tried to take him out. But they were all familiar with the others, and thus more likely to talk to them. Then factor into that, that they were all anomalies, and that when he finally did reach Palmer, he could kill two birds with one stone, and take them out as well, and all would be right with the world.

At least that's the only thing I can really think of.

That's a good point. Additionally, you could argue that Bob wanted Donna, etc. around as extra firepower in case he ran into problems (which he did).

I think these are reasonable rationalizations, but in all honesty, I don't think the writers really put much thought into it.
