Here. buy the trades Nothin' But Misery, My Murderous Childhood and other grieveous yarns and rough stuff. all put out by dark horse, all easily available. I highly suggest the goon. as far as what its about, i think you'd be better off finding out on your own, because its just pure greatness. if you like good story telling and great art then pick it up. i think just about everyone on this board digs the goon. so yeah its highly suggested.

I can't say more than Zombie did except I back him up by FULLY recommending this series.
You get Zombie's, Horror, Humor, Peaches and DAMN good writing and art. Eric Powell is the man!!!!

All that plus orangutans spontaneously combusting. Yeah, I def recommend. TFAW.com should still have all the issues of the Dark Horse series at cover price.

The GOON is an acquired taste, I like to say. It's not for everyone. The humor is very specific and not many folks get into it. He goes more for the weird-out-of-nowhere-gags, like the issue 8 retard throwing feces joke. Or the aforementioned flaming orangs.
Where he really shines for me is the subtle, but touching storylines that he manages to throw in there once in a while. The Buzzard, and the issue 8 Vampiress stories. Really unexpected stuff, but it makes it worth my picking up each issue of this guys books.

Yesterday a friend of mine bought Goon #1 through 8. He thinks that since he bought comics rather than TPBs he gets "street cred" but I don't think it counts if you weren't buying them as they were released. Anyway, he inspired me to buy the first TPB today and I was surprised to see that it is number 0. When I showed it to my friend he said non of the stories in #0 TPB show up in comics 1-8. Street cred, ha!

u know i wouldnt have thought like that until u brought it up.. i guess growing up around that kinda humor makes it "normal." so im gonna agree, some upper crust folks may not enjoy the nature of the goon.
but i love it! i gotta say goon is a great pick me up after a crappy day. hell its a great pick me up any day!

I only have a couple Goon comics, but it's one of my favorites after reading those few issues. I plan on buying a couple TPBs, but I haven't gotten around to it.

To each his own...
but how can you resist the heavy zombie content?

Do I laugh or do I sigh, shaking my head?
Street cred from comics?
And the stories in #0 were the issues published before Dark Horse picked up the property.

Well - naturally I appreciate a good story AND zombies, but if the artwork doesnīt appeal to me I tend to be slightly put off.
But I WILL keep following the adventures of the B.P.R.D. even though I donīt like Guy Davisīs art either.

Laugh. My friend was kidding. And I thought it was a funny thing to bring up because us newbies sometimes feel discounted for not "being there". We're all just here because of a fantastic comic called Hellboy.

I like Goon more then Hellboy...
This of course might be cause I'm still seeing new Goon comics every two months, where as I haven't seen a new Hellboy comic in quite some time.
don't hurt me.

In a scientific analysis of the back-issues (I used a lab notebook), I have determined that The Goon contains an average of one mind-bendingly wrong image or concept per page. Not included in this average is Franky's "Knife to the eye!!" bit, which recurs a surprisingly restrained once-in-three-issues. Some pages include two or more instances of mind-bending wrongness, while others lack anything that completely demented. Most of these pages are full-page fight scene panels; perhaps a more accurate analysis would calculate wrongness-per-panel.
In short, it's a great book.

I have been meanin to pick up The Goon but I think I'm readin too many comics as it is....my budget might not allow it....and I know that this question has been asked so, with an emphasis on "so", many times, when's the next Hellboy comic comin out....please put those sticks down.... :o :D

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I've been thinking about getting into goon for a while now. I decided to have a look on the DH website for some samples and it looks pretty good. I'll have to pick up the first trade tommorow.

Be warned, the first trade is called "Rough Stuff" because Powell was still working out art and story in the early days of Goon and the material is pretty hit-and-miss. However, I got a big kick out of the DVD-style "commentary" he does in the margins criticizing his own work (by way of Editor Dwight T. Albatross).
Also, it's often not for the squeamish or easily offended! (Peaches Valentine) (shudder) ;)

In which case, maybe I should get the first two. ;) From what I've seen, it's a pretty interesting title. I just can't believe I haven't picked it up sooner.

All I can say is that sometimes it's laugh out loud funny (much to Athena's embarrassment) and others it's quite affecting and sad. Love it. Buy the trades and lose yourself.
And the covers are the best on the stands.

I picked up trade 1 and issue #7 of The Goon today. :) I saw the Hellboy/Goon crossover, realised I didn't have it and scooped it up. I haven't had the time to read the trade as of yet but ARG!!!! I had a peak inside and it looks fantastic.

The Goon Rocks! It's one of my top three favorite comics. I love the more non-traditional comics (ie, non-super heroes) and the Goon is a perfect fit.
Well written, funny, and everything everyone else says.
I also like the art alot.
I would say, if you like comics with a wierd twist, buy it without hesitation.

Due to school/finances, I've had to narrow my comics habit down to three: Hellboy, BPRD, and the Goon. Needless to say, that makes for some pretty skimpy reading with the irregular release schedule.
I do feel like the Goon has gone a little downhill as of late. Issue 4 (I think) has been my fave so far.
