Happy New Year all you heavy metal maniacs!

I took an informal poll in the 2007 Update thread and people seemed to want a continuation of this thread for 2008 so here it is in all its morning glory.

There isn't a lot of news to report so far so this first post will be a short one, but given that last year's thread went 1024 posts on 69 pages, I'd guess we'll have a lot to say again this year.

By the way, what music did you welcome the new year in with?

I went with the superbly awesome SAVATAGE (http://www.savatage.com) concept album Dead Winter Dead this year.

What little information I have in the first post was saved for a week. Obviously with everyone pretty much off for the Xmas holidays (oh how that must piss off the death metal people), there hasn't been a whole hell of a lot of quality news, interviews, or audio and video samples.

And I plan it this way to post right at midnight on January 1st, get the new year started right.

And I think the less bands/More stage time thing was a good idea. Will probably give us more time to actually rock out than just sit around in between bands setting up.

Have they anounced U.S. Tour-dates yet?

Children Of Bodom, a Finnish band. Their sound has evolved over the yrs. I saw them live once, they were really good live.

A Job For A Cowboy. A thrash band. 1 of their big drawing points is that all of their members are under like 20 yrs old or something. Never saw em live. Im not a big fan, but they aint terrible.

High On Fire. Adopted by stoners. Not my style.

That was the Tim Owens interview I wanted to see. You could tell from past interviews that he wanted to slam Schaffer and this time he did it, albeit nicely. I mean, dude fires me two weeks before Christmas in an email, I'd slam him much worse than Owens did Schaffer. I think the worst Owens said was Iced Earth was never a big league kind of band. Which is true.

Slightly unrelated, but big props to Judas Priest for setting Owens up with some extra cash when they reunited with Rob Halford.

I heard on the radio yesterday that Stone Temple Pilots might have a reunion. Scott Weiland allegedly told some blogger to be on the lookout for an announcement in a couple months. Given this is from a blogger, though, I wouldn't get in line for tickets just yet. However Weiland did skip a recent Velvet Revolver show at the Sundance Film Festival. The band invited fans on stage to sing in his place.

Mickey Dee. What else does one need to know. The man rules. He rocked on the Don Dokken solo album and of course every Motorhead album he's been on.

And the last two or three Dokken albums should have just been called those, Don Dokken solo albums. No George Lynch but you got Reb Beach, okay. Reb Beach split, Jeff Pilson split, just go solo. The only people listening to Dokken albums today are those that are aware of Don Dokken's solo album anyway, I think.

Kiss front man Gene Simmons says the band will never make another record because music is a dying industry. Having not released an album since 1998, Simmons says there is no sense of urgency to record again, as there is no money in selling records anymore.

"There's no new Kiss material because there is no record industry. Any band who tries to do new material is trying to climb a slippery mountain,"

"Every day record companies are folding. It'd be nice to have new Kiss songs, but what's the business model? Do you just put songs on the Internet for free? Then what?"

If you're counting, that's two concerts filmed for upcoming DVDs. Last year's Download Festival show and this show. Maybe they'll take pity on their fans' wallets and release the two of them as a set.

Reported by an eye witness: "The last band of the night was well worth the wait. Exodus caused a uge stir in the Pearl Room. All was fine until about three songs into their set when a fan jumped up on stage and stage-dived. This was fine with the band, they even headbanged next to him. But security felt otherwise and kicked the kid out. Exodus stopped playing 'Children of a Worthless God' immediately. They shouted at security to let the kid back in and even told the security guard who kicked the kid out to get the fuck out. When they didn't, Exodus' singer Rob Dukes shouted, 'Hey, I'm stage-diving. Kick me the fuck out, big boy.' He jumped into the crowd. When he got back on stage, he commanded the audience all stage-dive. This is when the place turned into total chaos. Audience members were running on stage by the dozen and we were all enjoying the fuck out of ourselves. Then, Pearl Room's management shut off their mics and amps. The singer was arguing with the manager for a few minutes. Luckily, Exodus was allowed to continue their set, although no one else could stage dive. They were awesome live and played all the fan favorites."

Try "Metal vs. Insurance Companies." Most music venues that have metal shows have signs saying that stage diving and slam dancing are against the rules. What the band wants is irrelevant. The venue's insurance most likely doesn't cover them if some dude cracks his skull jumping off the stage.
